Not sure what to say?

It's Memorial Day weekend so of course u are on my mind. As u know, Memaw died last week so I'm praying that y'all have seen each other. It gives me comfort to know that y'all are together in heaven. I also know that u were with me when I had my car wreck and helped save me. I miss u so much. Thank u for everything u did for me, my family, and our country.

Hi! You probably wouldn't remember me, but I remember you. It has been 30 years ago that we graduated high school. I can't believe that it has been that long. We didn't meet until our senior year. There was a picture and article of you. The article was about war games, how prophetic? After high school, you went on to become the best of the best. I know your family is so proud of you but at the same time, miss you deeply. I wish we could have gotten to know each other better. I know God is happy to have you on His side. Hopefully sooner than later, whenever God decides, we'll meet up in heaven/paradise.

Many Blessings to the Horrigan Family!

Hey, I just wanted to wish u a happy birthday! I'm not sure what birthday celebrations are like in heaven but I'm sure you're having an amazing day! We think about u and talk about u daily. Actually, Timmy and other guys are going spear fishing tonight in memory of u. Tim thought it would be a great way to celebrate your bday since you're the one who taught them how to spear fish! Know your ears will be burning with all the stories that'll be told during the hot tub recap after fishing :) We all still love u so much and miss u more every day!

All day long Mon. I ached to feel you near, then that night we went out to eat at a restaurant on a river. And we watched an eagle about 40 feet away, catching fish. And I knew you were with me. Love, mom

I'm sorry I didn't send u a message yesterday, but I was having a hard day thinking of u and missing you! I can't believe we lost you 8 years ago! Honestly, it feels like we just had your funeral yesterday. Every year I keep thinking it will get easier, but I actually miss you more and more as the years go by. I also wish you were here to guide Daniel and Timmy as they always benefited by your words of wisdom and encouragement when they shared their problems with you. At least we can be grateful and confident in the fact that you are still with us in spirit and watch over us. Thank you for being the wonderful man my sister was smart enough to marry so that we could all embrace you in our lives and in our hearts. Even now, you provide peace and encouragement to us when we remember your stories and the laughter and insight they provide. Thanks Robert!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I just wanted you to know that I thought about you a lot over the holidays and imagine Christmas is amazing in Heaven! As we were looking thru old photo albums we were reminiscing about you and how blessed we all were to have you in our family. Many funny stories were told, and of course lots of hunting stories! Thank you for all the special time you shared with Daniel and Timmy. You will never be forgotten Robert and are truly loved and missed!

I haven't seen Bob, since we were in Basic Tng together at Ft Benning. I remember him well, a great guy, always upbeat (even in basic tng). I was recently told by another Harmony Church alumni of his passing. Few people can make such an impression that you remember them so well after so much time. My belated sympathies to his family and loved ones, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Thank you for leaving me with the words, "Don't worry about me, Sis. I'm in God's hands and that's a good place to be". But still You are missed so much. Every day I wake up and my first thought is to count my blessings. After 7 years, I still count your loss first and wish otherwise. You were right. You said if anything happened to you, that you would be fine, but we would have to deal with the rest. That has been very hard. I love you and miss you, especially your stories. I'm so glad that God left me your twin. John carries you with him as no one else can ever do. Looking at him is good for my soul. He's got my back too. Because he's golden, like you. Your sister, Lisa Michelle

It's Veterans Day today so of course I'm thinking about you! I'm so proud of you for serving our country. I just wish you didn't have to pay the ultimate price for us with your life. I know you're in heaven but we just miss you! I'm thanking a lot of military friends today for their service but you're the main person I'm thinking about. Anyway, we all miss you so much Robert. Thanks again for being our #1 veteran!

Hey was just thinking about you since it was your anniversary 2 days ago. I have happy memories of special things we did for your anniversary (while Daniel and Timmy patiently waited for you to go dove hunting with them since Sept. 1st was opening day to hunt). Timmy and daniel have also started duck hunting now and they love it. I miss hearing all the wonderful stories you told after y'all got back from hunting but mostly I just miss you!! You're still my favorite brother-in-law!! I love you and miss you more and more every day!!

I guess I got to see this world for seven minutes before you. Now you've seen the other side for seven years. Seems like yesterday that Mark and Lisa came to the house. I guess I'm the one that's the hung jumper now. I sometimes tell people that we where born together, for some dumb reason I thought we would die together. I guess it doesn't work that way. Time doesn't heal all wounds, time helps is all. I love seeing you in my dreams. I sense your presence in the shop or when I'm hunting with the boys in New Mexico. I sometimes even see you in the bathroom mirror looking back at me. It's kinda of a bitter sweet thing. I love seeing you, but at the same time it hurts so much. You where the first person I ever knew. Your my best friend, always will be. I'm glad you got to die the way you would have choosen if you got to chose,(bringing it to e'm, zipping them up) surrounded by guys that loved you, and would have traded places with you if you had just asked. Your passing was the greatest thing that ever happened to me! you brought me back to God. It's thru his grace, and his love that I have been able to continue in this race. I know you'll be one of the first I see when I pass over, your waiting on me now. I'll finally feel whole then. Damn how I miss you.

I think about you every day Robert and seem to miss you more and more as the years go by. I can't believe tomorrow is your 7 year anniversary as I feel like we just lost you yesterday. Daniel, Timmy, and I tell hunting and fishing stories about you constantly. Anyway, I just thought if I wrote you a note that I might feel better and I kinda do. I love you and miss you! You were an awesome brother-in-law!

May 30, 2012

Well here it is Memorial Day 5/28/2012 and I get this sad news about you. Since we moved away in 1984 to North Carolina my brother and I will talk about you and wished we knew you were here at Bragg I would have visited, only hour and half away. Now I look back over time when we first meet at St.Ignatius school, goodness I can't even remember the year but this is where my brother Jim and I first meet the Horiggan boy's :) I will always have found memories of the wonder years with you, John and Danny. Times like when I first learned how to shoot that curved bow in the woods next to your house, going hunting and fishing down at Barton Creek. Then there was the time we thought Danny got bitten by a snake at Barton Creek it was either you or John who carried Danny up that big hill and the other one of you ran ahead for help. Then of course Danny was picked on afterwards.
Robert I have to say that when I talk about my childhood the Horriggan boy's always comes up. The one thing that always comes out of my mouth is how you and John would catch snakes, how much you loved the outdoors and of course I said if those Horriggan boy's ever go in the Army they will be Special Forces it's in their blood. Then I read about some of your training and laugh because you already had it and that was just a refresher course. I'm not surprised at all to see you became an instructor it's a quality of leadership something you always had. I read a posting from your Mom that they were going to rename your street in your honor and she said that you would most likely laugh. That's because it nothing at all to you but it is everything to those around you. That is key to leadership it is not about you it is about others. Well if I ever make it back to Austin I'll stop by the house to try and catch up with John or Danny. I'll keep you in my prayers.
Before leaving I'm going to leave a few things.
First a poem for the family
In the Next Room
Death is nothing at all:
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you;
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone:
Wear no forced air or solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the
little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near,
Just around the corner. All is well.
-Canon Henry Scott Holland
Second to Robert some words that go with Taps.
Day is done,
Gone the sun,
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky,
All is well,
Safely rest,
God is nigh.

Fading light,
Dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright,
From afar,
Drawing nigh,
Falls the night.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, as we go,
This we know,
God is nigh,
God is nigh.

Then good night,
Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright.
God is near,
Do not fear,
Friend, good night.

Goodnight Robert,

Sitting at a beach cafe watching the waves cast away, I think of your smile and how it made me feel, so alive, so surreal. I just watch and wait, longing for a heart beat to renegotiate. But nothing happens the waves just keep slipping away, your gone, and I have to stay.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Robert, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Robert took me under his wing in 1987 when I first arrived to alpha co. in 3rd Bn, 1st plt. He made sure I got up to speed and looked out for me, sharing his knowledge , experience and friendship, Not because he had to but because that was him. He made a life long impact on me and news of his death saddens me deeply. He was a true patriot and an honorable man. May god bless the Horrigan family , Bobs wife and daughter. Prayer for the living and those that have passed………

Oh Great Usen he walks with you now
Oh Great Spirit be with us always and give us strength
Let our prayers be heard, felt and shared
Heal our pain but do not let us forget
The smiles, the laughter, the good times
Let my Family be our strength and
Let those who have gone before us hear our prayers
That they remain by our side always and
That we remember them always
When we feel the wind and see the sun rise
And on the moonlit night when you hear
The silence or the Night Eagle (Owl) calling
And there among the stars and beyond
Let us one day see them and you Great Spirit
Let our faith in you be our strength
Oh Great Spirit be with us always

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

PS Here's a poem that reminds me of you and your love of nature.

From Walt Whitman, Song of Myself

I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.

You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood.

Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged.
Missing me one place search another,
I stop some where waiting for you.

I rode into combat with Bob, he was a fine man. I have a picture of him behind my desk, along with other men who are gone now, and look at them often. He will be remembered always.

Like alot of people I knew bob, better than some and less than others. We hunted together, cooked out together at his home on bragg and he made me several knives that I will always cherrish. I got to know his wife Denise and daughter Courtney to a lesser extent but none the less our kids played together. Bob was truely a kind, outgoing, intelligent man who seeed to be loved by anyone who had the honnor of meeting him. I dont think I ever heard of anyone that didnt like bob. The ones that didn't like him I suppose didn't hang around long. Anyway, I found out just this week that bob had been killed a year ago this past june when I sent him an e-mail and Denise responded with the bad news and I took it hard. I'll end with simply this, he was my friend and I shall deeply miss him.

It's been one year.

Please allow me to thank all of you who have been so kind to share your memories of my son. They have given me much consolation.

My husband wrote a poem years ago, I paraphrase it here.

"Off to war the blue star said.

Five tours of Iraq, and now he's dead.

We always thought that he'd be back,

We just didn't count on the enemy flak.

Hunting, fishing, and knifemaking.....sigh.

Far too young to go out and die!

Now a gold star hangs in our window,

My God, how I miss you, son. Love, Mom and family.

I don't have to tell you Horrigan was an excellent soldier and superior professional in all that I observed early in his career and all that I have heard. I knew he was special when he won the leadership award in Ranger School. I also know very well he loved his family, comrades and growing up in Austin, TX-his time in the woods. We talked about many things sharing the tent a FT Benning during our formative years. I've enclosed a Ranger Class photo for a bona fides to let you know I'm for real in a separate email. This was not written for anything other to let you know he made an impression on my life, a very positive enduring impression. I also let Steven Dengate in Australia know about Robert as Dengate was his weapons squad leader in 3/75, Dengate passed, "we lost a good one there" and said he mentioned a hello to John. I have Dengate's telephone number if John would like it. Denise I'm very sorry for your loss, words can’t express it. If there's anything the Horrigan family needs or believes I can assist, please don't hesitate to ask-Phillip Wyllie "Wyllie".

Celebrating the Life of Bob Horrigan, the true embodiment of a leader, spirit of a warrior, and magnified essence of the 'Quiet Professional.'

Like the hundreds who served and continue to serve in the small 'high risk' special operations communities of our U.S. military, it is difficult to this day describing the effect of Bob's example of service has had on me, and the extreme sorrow of loss that I still feel. I’ve been thinking of Bob, his family, and the men of his same conviction, loyalty and 'strength-in-charater' quite a bit lately. How inadequate are words to express my feelings of sadness over his death! I’d like Bob's family to know how sorry I am, and how deeply I sympathize with them in their bereavement. As a leader who too served on the undeniable edge of danger, uncertain risk, and dutiful self sacrifice while in uniform, and with a family, Bob has made me reflect more vividly of what life and living is all about. For Bob's parents, I myself am a father of two boys, and I know how much your son held a special place in the hearts of you and your family. I ask that you take comfort from knowing this, and how much love and happiness you offered Bob during his lifetime. I ask that you then embrace your most cherished memories and never let them go.

For Bob's wife and childen I feel as if I am simply without adequate words of comfort. However, I will give you my best. Emily Dickinson once wrote: “Unto a broken heart No other one may go without the high prerogative itself hath suffered too.” It has been my experience in life and the quarter century spent as a leader in the U.S. Marine Corps that friends discover where another is hurting and are brave enough to try to heal. Bob was this very type soul-he would never let you quite on yourself-always there! However, I would discourage any person to tell a friend that they know exactly how he or she feels in moments like this when they haven’t. I would like you to know that I have, and more times than I care to recall. I know that in moments like this it is important to grieve. It is important to think about the past and remember life’s precious moments. It is important to capture your emotions at those particular times-even the painful ones. Then, comes a time to simply put them behind you until they call on you again. They will. You will know when-Understand this. Perhaps there will be an appropriate time to revisit your bereavement in order to be there for a friend.

Please know that I’m thinking of Bob, his 'never quit' spirit & dignity, and his entire family, and hope you’ll find a small measure of comfort, in knowing there are many people who loved and respected your son, husband, father, friend and who love his family.

He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds. –PSALM 147:3 rsv

Robert, I will never forget you. Everyday that goes by I remember the fun we had as children on our farm rolling down the back hill, picking berries as part of our "survival" games, playing in the fort on the old stone wall where I played house while you, Johnny and Danny would go out and "hunt". It was all pretend then, but I think now it was early training for your future career in the Army. You were a natural at being a warrior and a hero. Thank you for those memories and so many more. Thank you for your laughter and dry humor. I loved your stories.

You always treated me with such respect. I loved being your big sister. I'll look out for John for you and I'm thankful that you were a twin, it helps me feel better knowing part of you is still here that has so many of your shared memories. I miss you but I will see you again. Thank you for your sacrifice for our country. Lisa Michelle

For me Robert's passing was one of life's unexpected events, almost to the point of being impossible. Although his chosen profession put him in constant danger, I always knew that he would make it back from each mission. I always knew that one day he would come up to Colorado and we would go fishing or hunting together. He and John have that air of invincibility to them with the luck of the Irish seemingly on their side. Everyone who has had the privilege to know the Horrigans knows this to be true. Robert died a hero and his funeral was a testament to how great a warrior he was. Even more impressive was how many people came to pay respects to a man that they hadn’t seen since high school some twenty years ago. Other comrades came from all over the United States and even half way across the world to say good-bye. Robert was more than just a heroic solider, he is a mentor. His strong karma and the way he treated people made him unique. His strength resonated though his core values just as strong as it did though his body. I consider myself fortunate for having been a friend of Robert and cursing myself for waiting for one day to come. Robert has become a daily reminder to me that we are not here forever, that even a Horrigan eventually runs out of luck. Robert, rest in peace knowing that you are not forgotten.

This is just a little note to express my sincerest sympathy to Bob's family for the loss of a truly unique and special person. My thoughts have been withyou frequently since I heard the news and there are many reasons I have not been able to get you off my mind. I only met Bob a few times. I actually went to a little get-together at his and Denise's home in Ft. Bragg and since I am a vegetarian I got to listen to a million reasons why deer for dinner was a good thing! It seems that Bob was fond of saying that 'vegetarian' was the Indian word for 'bad hunter'. I did not personally know Bob very well but one of my very best friends considered Bob as a brother and I was lucky enough to hear frequent stories about their antics and realize how much Bob meant to him. Countless stories of hunting trips, and the poor turkeys dreading the word that the two of them had left North Carolina and were heading to Kentucky ready to chase them all over the woods, talk of retirement plans and the possibility of working together again in the future as they did in the past. My thoughts will continue to be with you often. Bob was a wonderful man and many will feel his absence. You were lucky to be the ones that mattered most to him. :)

My condolances to the Horrigan Family. I wrestled with Robert at Crockett and always looked up to him like an older brother. After high school it seemed that we all went our seperate ways. Most of us in the "group" went into the military and we all seemed to know that there was a very real possibility of one or all of us not coming back. We understood and embraced that fact as our duty called us. Robert loved what he did and lived & died a warrior, something that todays men and those that call themselves men, may never know experience. May we all die as honorable a death as Bob. God Bless.

Robert, I did not know you, but I surely knew of you. You were always one of legendary status among us younger folks that were in the Manchacan brotherhood. I will always hold your name in high esteem as I am sure will many others you touched directly and as in my case, indirectly. A story related to me by my good friend Greg comes to mind. It was during a boy scout outing and Greg was in your troop. The theme that weekend was shelter building, and Greg always reflects in awe the amazing capabilities you had at that time. Your lean-too shelter you built was textbook effective sheltering. Well beyond your years at the time, as was your focus I was told. A snapshot of your future capabilities as one of the best that walked among our soldiers. Thank you for your honorable service to this great country. I pray I will see you at the Jubilee brother.

A very sincere condolance to your family.

I was greatly saddened when I by chance read of Roberts death however; it didn't surprise me that he had become a tremendous soldier and patriot of the United States of America. Our family also suffered a tragic loss in the recent past and know the overwhelming pain you feel. Robert is truly an american hero and his accomplishments and sacrifice will be respected and remembered in our hearts forever. Your family will be in all our prayers.

Last fall, many of us gathered at Ft. Benning for the 3rd Ranger Battalions 20th anniversary. On the actual day we gathered at the Ranger Memorial and we Rangers, young and old, active and retired, stood together and recited our Creed. Afterward, some of the active Rangers were telling us that we were the heroes that they looked up to, and that they assumed that we looked back to the Rangers before us. While that is true, what is truer is what Marc Little said. He said we don't look back at those guys, we look at you guys, you’re the guys going out and doing the deal. A man like Robert who dedicated himself to excellence for these 20 years is a rare and remarkable example, and we are all poorer for his passing. Twenty years ago I knew you and we were young together. I will remember you as a true hero. Thank you for your service and example.

To all, my deepest condolences to your family. John, I wish I had been able to make it to the funeral. I am sorry for your loss.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.--John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873)

"My sword I give to him that shall succeed me in my pilgrimage, and my courage and skill to him that can get it. My works and scars I carry with me, to be a witness for me that I have fought his battles who now will be my rewarder."

John, Danny, and family,

It was such a shock to hear this terrible news. I am certain that Robert was the excellent soldier he seemed destined to become, and though you must be grieving, I'm sure y'all are quite proud. Just hearing his name brought back great memories of running around the Manchaca woods under those tressel tracks shooting each other with b-b guns.
