Harold Stahly Obituary

Stahly, Dr. Harold "Hal" LeRoy 5/14/1926 - 1/9/2015 Grand Ledge, Michigan Dr. Harold L. "Hal" Stahly The eldest of John and Helen Stahly's four children, Hal was born in Milford, NE and died in Grand Ledge, MI on January 9 at age 88. He grew up on a farm and had a lifelong love of nature and plants. He is survived by his brother, Richard Stahly (Mim), of Milford, NE; sister, Lois Slaight (Harold), of Lincoln, NE; and sister in law, Jo Stahly, of Lincoln, NE as well as many nieces and nephews. His brother, Wayne Stahly, preceded him in death by a month. Hal served in the Navy during WWII and met his wife, Dorothy, at Greenville College after the war. He completed his PHD at Indiana University. After having taught at UM Flint for many years and being director of student teaching, Hal retired as a Professor of Education. A renaissance man, Hal was a voracious reader, a worldwide traveler, an excellent cook, an expert photographer, a talented wood worker, and an award-winning iris hybridizer. He was a longtime member of several iris and daylily organizations, and served in various capacities including as president of the American Iris Society. Hal is survived by his children, Cindy Wills (Ben) of Indianapolis, IN; Susan Stahly of Lansing; Kris Stahly (Stephen Selbst) of Greenwich, CT; John Stahly (Marifran Brown) of Manchester; and Sarah Hegerfeld (Chris) of Dewitt as well as eleven grandchildren and one great grandson. Dorothy, his wife of 67 years, survived him by five days. He will be dearly missed, but his caring, integrity, intelligence and many passions live on in his family and those he influenced. A memorial service for both Hal and Dorothy will be held at Court Street UMC in Flint, MI on February 9 at 2:00 with family visitation at 1:00. Burial will be at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI. In Hal's memory, please consider donations to either Red Rover Ventures 3181 E. Grand Blanc Road, Grand Blanc Michigan, 48439 or Formar Nature Preserve and Arboretum, 2142 N. Genesee Rd., Burton, MI 48309. Checks to Genesee County Parks and Rec. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.tiffanyfuneralhome.com.
