Dick was born in Detroit, MI on November 9, 1934, the son of Willard and Aline (Samulski) Daly and was a resident of Grand Blanc and Flint. He graduated from St. Michael Catholic School in 1953. He earned his Bachelor Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1957, going on to do his post-graduate work and earn a Master's Degree from both Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University. On June 9, 1956 he married Margaret McGovern in St. Michael Catholic Church, Flint, Michigan. Dick's dedication to the Flint community was vast. He worked for the Flint Community Schools for 35 years as a teacher, a Community School Director and retired as Director of the Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation department. He was one of the pioneers of the Flint Olympian and CANUSA Games as well as a President of the Greater Flint Olympian and CANUSA Association. He was a member of the Vice President's Council on Physical Fitness under Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey. He was a President of the National Community School Education Association and served on their Board of Directors. Dick was a Co-founder and Past Grand Marshal of the Flint St. Patrick's Day parade and celebration. He also served as a President of the Flint Breakfast Optimist Club. He was highly instrumental in bringing blooperball and volleyball to the Flint area and founded the Michigan Women's Volleyball Association with past Olympic coach, Mick Haley. Dick was a president of the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame where he was later inducted in 2006 for his outstanding service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #695, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Michigan Sport Sages, the Flint Elks Club, the Knights of the AuSable and the Bombay Social Club. Dick had many personal accomplishments and adventures in athletics and recreation throughout his life. It all started when he won the 5th grade Marble Championship at Durant School... He proceeded to star at St. Mike's in football, basketball and baseball under the legendary Coach Tom Smith- as well as a member of their inaugural golf team. Dick moved on to Eastern Michigan University playing football for Fred Trosko, and was a member of EMU's golf team. He was named TKE All American his senior year as defensive end. Dick is also a Three Time Champion of the Gertrude A. McGovern "Nanamal Open" golf tournament. Passionate about sports and recreation in every sense, he epitomized the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." Whether it was downhill skiing Mt. Holly or the Rockies, sailing Portage Lake or the Chesapeake Bay, he and Margaret embraced life to the fullest. Dick was a patriotic American, a devout Catholic, and took pride in his Irish and Polish heritage. Above all else he was unwavering in his commitment to his family. Not sure what to say?

I am glad to be reminded about Dick's passing, but more importantly of my high regard for Dick as a person and for my good fortune to have known him back in the 1980s when I was involved in promoting youth recreational tennis in the city. He was great to work with. All my best to his family.

I've known Dick since I came to Flint as a greenhorn physical education teacher at the then, Bryant Junior High. That was 45 yrs. ago. He was always there to support people and once helped me have a Volleyball demonstration with my team. He also gave me a ride home one time, when my car would not run. He was a great guy and always had the most awesome tan. He will be greatly missed by anyone involved in Flint sports.

I was privileged to work with Dick as a volunteer trying to promote recreational youth tennis in the 1980s. As always, he was open to work with a volunteer to try to instill some new energy in a program to serve young people. He always was receptive, focused and professional.

Daly Family....
SORRY for your loss! Dick was a real "go-to-guy" on the Flint education and sports scene.
I first became aware of him as I was an 8th grader(60's) making the Can-USA team that year and more to come.Through the years he and his counter-parts were the reason Flint gained National attention educationally and sports-wise! Dick was a real"Flintsone"/cornerstone/foundation annnnd building block in the Flint area, HE WILL BE MISSED!!

More than 20 years ago I became friends with Dick when he and I joined another close friend of ours on a Great Lakes sailing adventure. Both he and Margaret became good friends from then on and while we only saw them several times a year we feel they are close to us. Your learn about the character of a person when you are up on the fore deck of a sail boat in a 35 mile blow hanging one for dear life and both of you depend on each other for courage. Dick was a person of character and I loved him a great deal. Our friendship will never go away and we feel honored to have been a short part of his life. Sail on good friend to a better place. Our love. Rich and Kay

Daly family - I was running with our dog Ruby this morning, saying prayers and reflecting on Mr. Daly joining our dad ("Goose") and so many other greats. When I said "may perpetual light shine upon him," right at that moment I approached dad's tree dedicated to him on our campus and there was an amazing sunrise. Perpetual light shining indeed on your dad and so many greats he joins. Loved the obituary - a great tribute to a great man. Please take good care. Your dad was full of grace and beauty. Keep carrying it on and please give my best to your mom. John Jasinski
