Bartley Brown Obituary

Bartley Frank Brown

Melbourne, FL

Dr. B. Frank Brown died at home following a brief illness on Saturday, November 1, 2014.  He was born in Dublin, GA and until his death at 97, remained active and deeply involved with his family and his many friends.  After service in the Navy in WWII, Dr. Brown moved with his family to Florida to complete his advanced degrees.  He became principal of Melbourne High School in 1953 and then served as Superintendent of Brevard County Schools and an educational consultant to the Kettering Foundation, the US Department of Defense Dependent Schools, and multiple Florida governors.

Dr. Brown was also a Fulbright Scholar and a life-long avid gardener.

During his 15 years at Melbourne High School, Dr. Brown replaced the traditional 'lock-step' curriculum with a non-graded program, and was interviewed by Walter Cronkite and featured in Time Magazine for his innovative and visionary educational concepts which benefited students of all abilities. While Mel-Hi was proudly known as a school whose library was larger than its gymnasium and as the first high school to offer Chinese as part of the curriculum. Dr. Brown was equally supportive of the non-traditional student.  A former graduate once wrote Dr. Brown that he would never have graduated if Dr. Brown had not allowed him to earn his diploma by learning the names of all the plants on the campus.

Deeply passionate and irrepressibly curious about learning, Dr. Brown wrote six books on education, and in 2007, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, Melbourne High School named its Science and Research Center in his honor.

Upon his retirement from the school system, Dr. Brown traveled extensively to the jungles of SE Asia collecting exotic plants.  Dr. Brown hybridized and patented over 20 aglaonemas and shared his knowledge in lectures and in authoring three books, including the first book ever written on crotons.  With the assistance of Cleo Milare, his dear friend and nursery manager, Dr. Brown opened his Valkaria Gardens to the public and in 2012, he received a life award from The International Aroid Society.

Dr. Brown is survived by his daughters, B.J. Freeman and Cassandra (Al) Evans, six grandchildren, Kate, Robin, Louis, Stuart, Sterling, and Catherine, and one great-grandchild, Annie Ruth.  He loved to sing to his daughters and never missed a chance to burst enthusiastically into song.  The exuberant refrain he always sang upon heading out the door - "We're off to see the Wizard" - seems a fitting epitaph for the final journey of this most remarkable and unforgettable man.

Private services will be held in Dublin and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Foundation for Brevard, 1361 Bedford Dr #102, Melbourne, FL 32940, designated for the B. Frank Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund. This Fund will sustain Dr. Brown's lifelong commitment to education by benefiting Melbourne High School students seeking a college education and by providing cutting edge equipment and technology for the Science and Research Center.

My Dad was in the Air Force and we were stationed at Patrick in the late 50s, early 60s. I went to Mel Hi from the middle of my junior year to the end of my senior year, graduating in 1961. Dr. Brown was the principal then, and I really liked him. I loved that I had the opportunity to take Russian while I was at Mel Hi. Many blessings to Dr. Brown's famiy and loved ones.

Dr. Brown's educational leadership was one of the main reasons my family moved from Texas to Melbourne in 1962. My parents wanted my sister and I to have a good education and they had read about how highly regarded the educational system was at Mel-Hi thanks to the leadership of Dr. Brown. He was not only a great educator but also a wonderful person!

I am so sorry for your loss of this very special man.

Sending my sympathy and condolences to Dr. B. Frank Brown's family. This man was an incredible leader and motivator. He was every child/students friend. He gave every student a chance and what an inspiration he was. We were so fortunate to be able to have gone to school in an era led by such a giant of an educator. And many many years after, it was a joy to follow him in retirement. We enjoyed our visits at class reunions with the Class of 1963. This was one great man. Rest in peace.

Dr Brown on every level is a legend. the first time I saw him this dear man strolled through the cemented paths leading to each of the grouped class rooms and buildings of Mel-Hi with dignity yet an approachable ease and manner that I got the impression my principal was like Robert Youngfrom the TV show "Father Know's Best". Soft spoken with a smile that made you feel just plain good. His intellect, lighthearted humor with that sparkle in his eyes inspired and made the students happy. A scholar, gentleman, horticulturist, good listener, mentor, kind soul has left a legacy to everyone who had the pleasure of talking with him. I am so glad we had a few minutes together at a recent reunion. We shared adventures and his discoveries of plants and cultures. I shook his hand, but decided to hug and thank him for his encouragement and sheer joy he brought to me when I was in school.I am glad I did. God Bless your spirit Dr. Brown I'm sure you are in the garden of heaven's veil. My condolences to your family and I am so sorry for the grief and loss you feel. With the impact he made on myself and others, I can't imagine the pain and loss you feel for this wonderful man.

B.J and Cassandra:
I am so sorry for your loss. Your father was a wonderful man and had such wonderful accomplishments. I admired your father very much, as do so many. Back in the early 50's, your father hired my mother, Nell Holmes Mussler, as a young teacher in Melbourne, Fl. He picked her up from the train station, and your family welcomed her into her home when she did not know a soul. When Hollis and I were little girls, we used to love to visit him and roam through his yard with him and he would tell us all about his exotic plants. He always had a smile on his face and welcomed everyone into his home. Cousin Frank will be missed by all. He left a great legacy to Brevard County and the world and was admired and respected by all. I admired a dwarf Bamboo he had and he was so generous and gave me a cutting and every time I look at it in my garden, I think go him, his generosity and his love of plants and educating others about them! November 5, 2014

Dr. Brown was such an innovator in education. His ideas about what the high school experience should be like shaped the lives of so many. Those of us who benefited from his ideas were able to pursue our interests and receive the best high school education available in our country. I have shared his philosophy with fellow educators, and tried to implement them in my teaching methods.
He indeed lived a life that influenced others in a variety of ways. His legacy is large

Cindy Smith

November 5, 2014

Dr. Brown, I can honestly say you will never be forgotten for you will always be present in the hearts of so many. One comment on the memory board caught my eye stating “Students were treated as individuals with different interests and learning strengths “. Because of Dr. Brown I hung in there and finally got my diploma. Always feeling ‘stupid' Dr. Brown told me once to stick to what “I” could do and one day it would become clear what I was meant to do. Not much was known about dyslexia, therefore I was not tested until my son was being tested at age 6. I found out I indeed am dyslexic and learned many ways to cope with it. As my confidence grew and with fleeting thoughts of someone telling me I would accomplish what I was supposed to accomplish, at age 47, I went to nursing school and after a 22 year career of nursing can realize it did become clear what I was meant to be. Thank you Dr. Brown for treating me as an individual and making me believe I, too, could accomplish something. Cindy (Smith) Crawford. Class of '61

My mind goes back to a time when I was having what I felt was a monumental issue. He listened to my words and helped me to see it was but a fleeting thing. November 5, 2014

Dr. Brown literally changed my life when I was sent to his office in 1953 as a new 7th grader trying to pull the same daily foolishness as I had done the previous 6 years. I didn't get the "dreaded electric paddle", but he was wise enough to get my attention, by pointing out a fellow classmate he had sent back to the 6th grade.

I "shaped up" and graduated in 1958 with a "gold tassel". He certainly helped a great many students over the years.

I remember proudly showing off the magazine article stating that Melbourne High was number 2 in the nation in educational standards.

I am so pleased that Linda Platt was able to hand deliver copies of my novels to Dr. Brown and especially the third one, His Father's Ways, as I dedicated it to Dr. Brown. One of it's major themes was education and he will always come to my mind when that word is mentioned. He was so kind to My sister Graydawn when she was at Melhi. We were poor back then and his assistance was very appreciated. I was unable to go to college, but my high school education prepared me so well, I've been able to prosper in business and write literary novels.I'm also a plant enthusiast and visited Valkeria gardens. I took along one of his old friends, Elaine Vaughn. We exchanged some plants and he gifted me with one of his books. I will cherish the experience more now because both he and Elaine have passed over.

Cassandra and B.J., my thoughts and sympathy to you and your families. I will always remember a photo and caption in one of our yearbooks which showed a receptionist in the main office of Mel Hi, greeting a visitor by saying something like, "I'm sorry, Dr. Brown is in Washington conferring with the President. Dr Brown was a wonderful principal and did a good job keeping us all straight and encouraged. My senior year, 1953-54 I worked in the office and he trusted me to use his car to go to Indialantic to get his wife if they had some place to go right away. How many principals would do that today? what an amazing man -- he was a mentor and a friend. He remembered you years after graduation and was always happy to see you. We shared a Georgia connection, too, it seems he had wooed a young lady from my mother's hometown. We had a laugh about that.

In a age where the term “Great Person” is used too frequently, and therefore loses much of it's meaning, I offer praise to Dr. Brown as being a truly great person. In his profession he was a scholar, a innovator, a gardener and he cared for all his students (even the pain-in-the-neck students). No names please.

At many times in my life, as I look back at my humble accomplishments, I know they were possible in no small part by my education at Melbourne High School under Dr. Brown's leadership. I know many other former students feel the same.

Rest in peace Dr. Brown; you earned it.

Joanie Holzer Schirm

November 4, 2014

Dr. B. Frank Brown to me was always so larger than life. Beginning in 1953, the Brown and Holzer families became fast friends. I can't recall a world without B. Frank. He had an uncanny ability to see the potential in everyone – no matter what path you traveled, or how long it took. B. Frank gave to so many the gift of a lifelong quest for knowledge. Fortune magazine described Melbourne High School under his leadership: “...perhaps the most stimulating high school in America.” A scholar, who was a plant man, he was a role model and model maker of advanced educational environments. Who could listen to him and not be inspired to take on the world? A man way ahead of his time, he never feared going into the vast unknown for the good of learning. It was B. Frank that my elderly father, Bubbie Holzer called when he decided to break out of an assisted living facility where he was recovering after a hospital stay. B. Frank knew it was his duty to help his good friend and so he drove my dad home. I still have the email B Frank sent me announcing this ‘escape' was underway. I looked up to B Frank fiercely my whole life. He will be forever loved and missed by those whose lives he touched and forever changed. Much love to BJ and Cassandra and their families. Godspeed Dr. Barley Frank Brown.
