To the Phillips Family- You don't know me, but I was lucky enough to support a veteran's charity and received a bracelet of a fallen soldier. I wanted to let you know that the name chosen for me was Matthew's. I am honored to to play a small part in his legacy and will wear his name with pride. From all that I have read, he was a great man and true hero. I am very sorry for your loss but know that he has a new friend that he's never met in me.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Phillips Family know that we just made a small donation to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in honor of Matthew B. Phillips US Army Corporal. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Wow...where to begin...I went to basic training with Matt and he helped me through some rough times for sure. i was 17 and naive to say the least, but Matt was always exceptionally friendly to me the entire time we were in the same squad in basic. He would tell me stories about his family, how he had lost his mom and about his dad and how much he loved where he was from. after we graduated Basic training we went right across Ft. Benning to Airborne school where we once again bunked in the same little 4 man room and we continued to be friends throughout our time there. we actually were right next to each other for all five of our jumps at airborne school, which was some of the most memorable days of my life. Matt never turned anyone down that needed help and would always give us a ride around columbus in that Tundra he was driving at the time (i think it was his dad's)i was going through my pictures the other day and found one of him and one of our other buddies when we were out to eat back in 2006 during airborne school.great memories. I remember when he bought that Jeep of his, it was nice. He actually gave me a ride down to
Florida in it after jump school so i could see my family, and he didnt have to, but he always had a habit of looking out for me and i will never forget it. Sadly the last time i ever saw him was when he was driving away in his then-new jeep that day in florida. and i am even more sad that i couldnt attend his funeral. I just wanted to write this to remember him. God Bless You and Your Family Matt!

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

To the family and parents of Matthew I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.

As the sister of Michael Phillips, father of Matt, I struggle to know how or where my brother gets his strength because he has been through losses that either make you stronger or destroy your faith. But my guess is that he is buoyed by the love of his family and friends, motivated by wanting the best for his children, driven by a strong sense of Christian and civic duty. Thank you to all who honored Matt, validating his service and his family's sacrifice. I don't know if anyone could be prouder of my brother, my niece Mary, lovely Eve, and especially my nephew, than my family has been through this gut wrenching experience. Thank you as well to those who have lifted all of Matt's loved ones in prayer. God has given grace for this time; it is with faith we look to the future for His healing.

To the Phillips Family,

You have our heartfelt sympathy during this time of loss. Just find comfort in knowing the he is in God's army now and he no longer is fighting for his freedom or ours. He gave the ultimate sacrifice. You should be so proud of his courage and committment to his fellowman to be willing to sacrifice his life so that we might know the freedom and liberties we have.
May God Bless you and through him may you find strength to continue on.

The ultimate sacrifice made by Corporal Matt Phillips will never be forgotten. My family and I are forever in his debt. We are the recipients of inherited freedom and Matt’s service and ultimate sacrifice will allow my children and their children to continue to live in freedom. Our prayers are with Eve, Mr. Michael Phillips and the entire family. Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address suggested-"that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion". Thank you Matt!

To the wife and family of Matt Phillips: Thank you for your sacrifice. Only time will heal your pain. Remember the good times and celebrate his life and who he was everyday. I want to extend my very heartfelt sympathy for your loss. My son, SSG David Hall, also serves with the 173rd Airbone Brigade, 2nd Battalion, Able Company. I do know that David would want me to extend his sympathies, as well.

The ultimate sacrifice that Matthew paid for our country and for its citizens will never be forgotten. His bravery, dedication, selflessness and valor are such a rarity, and I honor him.

May God wrap you in his arms and help ease your pain and sorrow. You will all be in my prayers.

Our deepest condolences go to you and your family. My 11 year old son asked me why Matt was so important to everyone when my husband and I took him to stand by the side of the road today for the funeral procession. I explained to him that your husband made the greatest sacrifice anyone ever could. He gave his life so that others could be free. I didn’t know your husband, but every day when I cleaned your room, and saw your pictures, I knew how proud you were of him . Eve, Find peace in knowing that Matt is with God and be proud of him for his selflessness.

There are no words to comfort you that I can express. The only comfort comes from Christ and the promise that you will meet Matt again. It is with great saddness and pain I send this message. A Thank You to Matthew, his family, his friends and loved ones of Matthew. I cant imagine the pain and suffering you are going through. I do know that you are HONORED by Cpl. Matthew Phillips. My son is with 2-503 D co. I talked to him 2 days ago from Italy.....he told me how he was dealing with the loss of his fellow soldiers. Tyler reminded me that he was orginally assigned to C co.-same platoon and squad as Matthew-he was suppose to be their saw gunner- but was later moved to D co. He said Phillips was the guy he signed his intake papers with and spent some time with him. After going to D co. Tyler said he still stayed in contact with Phillips. My son has alot of respect for Matthew and said what a wonderful person he was and honored to be his friend. I could here and feel the pain in his voice....
My son requested that I not have a homecoming party for him....to respect his fallen brothers. I shall respect his wishes.

To the Phillips family:
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all on this very sad day and many days to follow. Our son is in the Marine Corps and has not yet deployed but we know the day is coming soon. He is now in Hawaii on a training mission and would love to be able to join us when we stand on the street and proudly wave our American Flag in honor of Matthew. We are so proud of our son as we know you are very proud of Matthew. He has given one of the greatest gifts a person could give.... His life for our freedom!!!
