VIRGIL THARP, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2014, at home. He was born on Nov. 8, 1930, in Fort Wayne. He was a 1948 graduate of Central High School and a U.S. Air Force veteran receiving several citations. Virgil was formerly employed by Dana Corp., General Electric and General Motors-Defiance. He retired from both International Harvester with 30 years of service and Phelps Dodge after eight years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 49 years 11 months and 4 days, Patricia (Faulkner) Tharp; children, Shelia (Robert) Starks, Fred (Cheryl) Underwood, Kimberly (Michael) McCowin, Sonya Tharp, Toya Phillips, and Virgil A. (Chamessa) Tharp; brother-in-law, Dossie Burnett; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Tharp Sr. and Fannie Tharp-Dudley; brother, Walter Tharp Jr.; sister, Betty Burnett; foster sister, Callie Allen; and grandson, Reginald Starks. Service is 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1331 Gay St., with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, at the church. Burial in Lindenwood Cemetery.
