Gary Cyr Obituary

Lt. Col (Ret) Gary Cyr

We bet you one fish 'n chip dinner from the Weathervane Restaurant on Dover Point Rd that someone up in heaven is getting a two hour lesson right this very minute about "Old Glory" and why we place our hand over our hearts when she flies!

Please join Lt. Col (Ret) Gary Cyr's four children in a proud salute as we say, "I love you" and pay tribute to a very special man that passed away on April 2nd 2014. On this day, Carey Ann Cyr Hendricks will sing his praises, Jennifer Cyr will laugh loudly in his honor, Julie Cyr Longard will comfort his friends and share his joy and Matthew "Buddy" Cyr will carry on his distinguished legacy and the Cyr name forever.

Proud parents Claude and Marion Cyr preceded him and Gary leaves behind brother Mark Cyr and spouse Leigh Herndon, sister Claudia Cyr, sister Lisa Cyr Halland spouse Doug Hall, sister Tracy Cyr Masse and partner Rich Page. Gary is now shining down on his first granddaughter Aubrey Blake Hendricks, the many nieces and nephews that carry his spirit and his dear friend Judy Daniels.

A true Sox fan raised in Topsfield, Massachusetts, Gary graduated from Masconomet High School 71' and Norwich University '75. The flight of his military career landed in Dover New Hampshire for many years where he and the mother of his children, Meg Cyr (ex-wife) raised a family full of love. He dedicated 27 years of service to the United States Air Force and Air National Guard. He truly believed in bettering the lives of those that served this great country and devoted his retirement years with ESGR supporting these fellow veterans and their families.

Gary spent many days making his self-constructed colonial house a home. He annually strapped 6 bikes to the roof of a pop-up camper, he danced down the mountain gracefully with his wooden skis; he strummed his guitar at night to help his children fall asleep; he read every billboard aloud, he impersonated Elvis"like a king", he instilled a strong work ethic and always laughed at his own jokes.

May all of his many friends from all parts of the country know that he rests peacefully tonight with Fox News blaring in the background and his pot of Dunkin' Donuts coffee brewing in the kitchen. His grass has been meticulously mowed in straight lines and his car washed and rewashed one last time. It's guaranteed he has already made friends and entertained an audience dressed as one of the Blues Brothers.

Let us please salute him proudly and ignite his joyous spirit to spread like wildfire across this great nation that he so proudly represented.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main Street, in Concord. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 11, 10 a.m. at St. Peter Church 135 North State Street, in Concord, N.H. Committal prayers and military honors will follow at the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery, in Boscawen.

In Lieu of flowers consider making a donation in his honor to www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bennett Funeral Home, Concord, N.H.

Not sure what to say?

It's been 9 years now but know that I think about our times together, at Norwich and the NHANG. You left a positive mark and difference in so many ways and things, especially the NH State Veterans Cemetery. RIP

I spent sometime getting to know Gary at Norwich, I was a year younger (Class of 76). When I really got to know him and his family was in Dover NH. We Coach our daughters in softball and basketball and participated in lots of school activities together. He and his family was always in the middle of meaningful activities. Have a lot of fond memories of the family oriented Christmas parties that Meg and Gary held each year. R.I.P.

Sending our deepest sympathy to the family on this great loss-we were shocked and saddened to learn of his death. It is with heartfelt sadness that I write this message of condolence. Gary was indeed one of the "good guys" at Norwich University. Awesome tributes to a very beloved man. By these accounts, he truly had a "Wonderful Life" - I recall Gary from our Norwich Drill Team experiences. He continuosly portrayed excellent military bearing, a very positive "can do" attitude and had a warm, contagious, cheerful personality. May God bless him, all his family and friends, and those who were fortunate enough to know this great American!

I was so very sorry to hear of Gary's passing. My sincere condolences to his family. My family's thoughts are with you. I was a classmate of Gary's at Norwich and I remember Gary as just a great guy with a broad smile and a hell of a sense of humor. I always enjoyed catching up with Gary on the Hill or in one of our classes. From everything I have read, he is one who made a real contribution in life and had a positive impact on with everyone he came into contact. There is nothing better that an individual can be remembered as than as a good and loving husband, father, son and friend. He was all of those things. He lived a very good life....

I was saddened to learn today of Gary's passing. I first met Gary thorugh ESGR in 2006 and I got to witness Gary and Baron doing their Blues Brother's routine, to a standing ovation! Later on, we were at another ESGR training event and we were talking privately. My future son-in-law, Alex Varela, had just been killed in action in Iraq and Gary's daughter had been going through cancer treatment. We shared our "news" as we caught up with one another's lives and we said a little prayer together and visited some more, had a drink at the bar and later that evening Gary sang. I have not forgotten that evening. His compassion for others came through and he had a talent for making people feel comfortable and he always left you smiling! He was such a special man and so proud of his children and family. You know that your father loved you but I wanted you to know that he often talked about you with great pride and love. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers today.

Gary and I go back to 1971 when we started our experience at Norwich University as Rook buddies. He excelled there! I fondly recall how talented he was as member and eventually company commander of the newly formed drill team, whether he was tossing bayoneted rifles overhead to a back row or bravely standing tall as spinning bayonets flashed by him from all sides. We met again in the NH Air Guard in the 1980s and worked together in some capacity (Wing and HQ) until he retired. Our paths continued in NH ESGR efforts and then at the NH State Veterans Cemetery. He was a visionary and could execute where others failed. Closing my eyes I can hear him proudly signing Lee Greenwood's "I'm Proud to be an American" He lived life passionately and made a difference in so many ways. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. God Bless! I will miss him!

Carey Ann, Jenny, Julie, Matt and families....Meg I am at a loss for words. You captured his spirit. I laughed reading the obit. I remembered him saving Joe from an early release day and him wanting Liv to be taped saying the Pledge of Allegiance. His love for his family was not captured completely. The signs for your birthdays the size of the garage... His grin as he was off to the airport to go collect you...OH YEAH the car was washed for that. God Bless you all! Rest in peace Gary.

Gary Cyr:
A wonderful Dad, a caring friend, a hard worker, an entrepreneur, a jokester, singer and guitar player.
The Most Fun weekend guests in the tiniest apartment on earth. (with Megsy)
A patriot, a role model, and a descent human.
A proud American who sacrificed himself and brought up his children to sacrifice themselves for their country.
An outstanding life for a guy who checked out way too early.
His passing is a heart hurting loss for so many.
None of us hit all the right notes in life, but he did a damn good job.

My Tears and smiles come together.
He leaves a legacy of intelligent, moral, decent, and giving people.
His dedication and sacrifice inspire us all.
You Lucky Ducks, he really was a special guy!
Praying for you all,
Susie Carey

I met Carey Ann soon as she moved to Nashville. I am much older than her, but we formed a friendship immediately. We worked together at CTX Mortgage in Brentwood. I was fortunate to meet Meg and Gary and took over the parenting role in their absence. Such a loving family with such funny stories that kept me constantly entertained. We sure have shared some wonderful times and just rest knowing that all three of your girls are in Nashville now, and I will check on them from time to time Gary! May you Rest In Peace and may God comfort your loved ones for losing such a great man.
