The unque thing about Deacons inspiration in my life, is that my junior high school coach use to call me " Deacon" and he would yell " Deacon show em how to hit that sled, show em how to make a tackle". Then in 9th grade 67 I looked him up. I'm proud he was my role model.
A great man and football player...we named our son, Deacon, after him...God rest to him and God's peace to his family

Deacon Jones, was the only pro football player I have ever known personly. I last talked with Deacon on FAMU campus 1974. Decon played at Hungerford High with my cusin Ben Lampkin, QB. Had there never been a Deacon Jones, The NFL, would not be the game it is today. Decon Jones, is responsible for A number of rules that The NBA put in place to give the other team hope of knowing how to deal with the defensive end who wrote the book. RIP

Deacon Jones was a star with the Rams when I was in my teens. He was my favorite player and he was a phenomenon. In full football gear (not shorts and track shoes) he was as fast or faster than any other player. He was a pass rushing terror, and better than that...he was a GREAT human being. I hope to meet him face to face in heaven one day. RIP my football hero.

It was just a game but even then I knew that he and the other were something special...This world is a sadder place without you...May YOU rest in peace. Mr. Deacon Jones was the Deacon of Football who Loved Quarterback on a Sunday Afternoon. RIP Deacon Jones
IT IS SAD TO LOSE ANOTHER FOOTBALL GREAT AS DAVID "DEACON" JONES. I REMEMBER THE NAME QUITE WELL WHEN HE AND HIS MURDER'S ROW, ALL FOUR OF THEM, ROSIE GRIER, MERLIN OLSEN, AND MEMORY ESCAPES THE FOURTH GENTLEMAN, I THINK HIS NAME WAS LINDY, OR LUNDY, ANYWAY, THEY WERE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH!
I THINK DEACON PLAYED WITH THE RAMS, MAINLY, AND TWO OTHER TEAMS. WISH HE COULD HAVE PLAYED FOR THE COWBOYS, THEY COULD USE THE HELP. BUT DEACON WAS A CLASS ACT, AND TAKEN TOO SOON, ONLY 74-YEARS-OLD! GUESS GOD AND JESUS WANTED A GREAT FOOTBALL PLAYER IN HEAVEN WITH THEM, THEY GOT ONE OF THE BEST! DEACON,
YOU WON'T EVER BE FORGOTTEN!

Loved watching him play. He brought it every down ..... and I'm from the other coast. From what I know, he was a class act in an arena that had many distractions that could have taken a weaker person away from what is good and right. He wasn't the Deacon for nothing. You'll see him again.
To the family I give my heart felt sympathy. Goodbye Deacon and say hello to Bubba for me.
You made me laugh when you were in an ODD COUPLE Episode. You did a shaving comercial. Funny stuff. GOD BLESS

hey Deac, loved watching you, and Lamar, Merlin, Rosie. You are the "sacks" king, and loved watching you and the other members of the foursome strike fear into the hearts of QB's you also invented the term "fear factor".
May the eternal light shine upon him....
It was actually announcer Dick Enberg
who coined the term Sack. Saw David at
the LA VA once doing radio show,
and signed autograph, we talked a minute, but deacon wasn't very nice !
one of greatist sack masters, of all time one of the orginal fearsome foursome R.I.P deacon jones.

ONE OF THE NFL GREATEST
DEFENSIVE PLAYERS EVER !
REST IN PEACE
TO THE FAMILY
To The Deacon Jones Family:
Like many others today, I grieve with you and remember a man who gave so much of himself. Just six years ago, Deacon agreed to appear at a benefit "roast" I developed in Chicago. He came along with fellow Rams teammate Merlin Olsen, Dick Butkus and Lem Barney. I'd never met Deacon before but he entertained us with stories the night before at a private dinner. At the event itself, he stepped up to take over as auctioneer when a professional wasn't getting it done. And he was a smashing success.
While I remember his outstanding effort as a Hall of Famer with the Rams, I'll best remember his unselfishness off the field.
A rarity in the world of professional athletes and people in general, I will miss him greatly.
My sincere condolences to the Jones family.
Sorry to here that David"DEACON"Jones has passed away. My condolences go out to his family and friend. Carolyn Johnson, Brooklyn, New York
