I have many of Mister Hubbard's albums which I aquired over the years. I was first atrracted to his ARTISTRY when I was in high school in the last years of the 1950's and in 1970 during the spring of that year I was at the MARDI GRAS club in Mobile, Alabama a few block's from our home. I went to the juke box and came upon a selection that overwhelmed me with emotion snd awed me for it's technical and artistc amalgamation - - - it was "HERE'S THAT RAINY DAY", I stilll play Freddie's rendition of that song today and I never am left with trhe feeling that I won't be playing that tune again. I am a 3d generation brass player following my maternal grandfather Eugene "Son" Doyle and Fredericka Doyle Thompson my Mother. My Grandfather used to jam with Ferdinand Le Menthe (Jelly Roll Mortor) and my Mother was invited to join the "Sweethearts of Rhythm" in 1939 when she graduated from high school, but she went on to play in the concert band at Xavier U. in New Orleans in th early 1940's. My mom was a Hubbard fan too. I am a fan of many excellent jazz trumpeters, all of whom have their own unique perfomance styles and sounds, but Mr. Freddie Hunnbard (Frederick D. Hubbard) stands tall among them . His loss to our ears is a great loss, and now his concerts are for and with his jazz colleagues who've gone to the great beyond --- play on FREDDIE! We'll miss you!

To the Family of Uncle Freddie

Just a word to thank you for being an inspiration to me as a kid. You gave me inspiration to become a good musician and supported me by buying one of my first sets of drums. I appreciate you for that. You have accomplished great things in the jazz world. I stand in awe as I listen to your many great works of art. I am very proud to be your nephew. I love you and will miss you greatly.

Love,

Your newphew, Larry Benns

To the Family of Freddie Hubbard

We would like to convey our condolences and sympathy to you, Briggie and Dewayne. We have not seen you for quite some time but we did manage to see Uncle Freddie a few years ago in concert here in Indy. We were glad to have been able to spend a few minutes with him in September a few years ago. We love you. You are in our prayers!

Love from your nieces and newphews in Indy,

Edwena, Sharon, Phyllis, Larry, LouWanna and Al

The lost of Freddie Hubbard to the Jazz community is like loosing a family member. His unmistatable sound will always be with us who endeared him. I had the honor to meet and see Freddie play often in New York . WOW. WHAT A SAD DAY IT WAS WHEN HE PASSED.
