To the Family of Uncle Freddie

Just a word to thank you for being an inspiration to me as a kid. You gave me inspiration to become a good musician and supported me by buying one of my first sets of drums. I appreciate you for that. You have accomplished great things in the jazz world. I stand in awe as I listen to your many great works of art. I am very proud to be your nephew. I love you and will miss you greatly.

Love,

Your newphew, Larry Benns

To the Family of Freddie Hubbard

We would like to convey our condolences and sympathy to you, Briggie and Dewayne. We have not seen you for quite some time but we did manage to see Uncle Freddie a few years ago in concert here in Indy. We were glad to have been able to spend a few minutes with him in September a few years ago. We love you. You are in our prayers!

Love from your nieces and newphews in Indy,

Edwena, Sharon, Phyllis, Larry, LouWanna and Al

The lost of Freddie Hubbard to the Jazz community is like loosing a family member. His unmistatable sound will always be with us who endeared him. I had the honor to meet and see Freddie play often in New York . WOW. WHAT A SAD DAY IT WAS WHEN HE PASSED.

Rest in Peace. you were, and will always be, one of a kind. somewhere in every note that any of us play, along with Pops, Miles, Diz, Clifford, and the countless others, a little of your imprint is there.

When I was a year or so out of high school, a friend of mine turned me on to the album "Straight Life".
To say that I was blown away is an under statement, as the playing on this record was like nothing that my ears had heard at that time.
To a die hard rock'n'roller, hearing such improvisation was a revelation, with all the great players on that record giving their all for 36 minutes.
What was also amazing about this record, was the caliber of friends he recruited to play this music.
To have such alliances made him truly a wealthy man, for these men were united in presenting one of the greatest jazz recordings in my library.
We now know that he is reunited with Miles, Dizzy, Satchmo, Lee, and Maynard for all eternity.
And I am going to be the best person possible for the remainder of my life so I can join them in the "Great Jam Session In the Sky"
We thank God for the 70 years that he gave to Freddie, and for the gift of music that eminated from his horn.
May the family know that you have the collective hearts of jazz fans everywhere as you mourn his passing.
Please do not forget to to celebrate his life with a monstrous jam session sometime soon, and please record such a jam so that those of us who could not be there may share in such a celebration.
