Beverly McNeilly Obituary

Beverly Ann McNeilly died March 21, 2014 at the age 62 after a diligent four-year battle with cervical cancer. Born in Indiana and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, she attended Macalester College and earned a B.A. in Social Science; she earned an M.A. in Urban Education from Cal State Los Angeles. Bev taught young children for 37 years working in Minnesota, Singapore, Paraguay, California (Los Angeles, Vallejo and Alturas) and Frederick, Maryland. Her mother, Hester, sister Jo Ellen, brother Vance and his wife Cheryl, and nephews Juan, Andres, and Jose and their families survive her. Beverly was married to Peter Currer for 26 years and leaves behind their cherished daughter Sarah. She touched the lives of over a thousand children and their families with her fierce dedication to student success. Her goal was always to inspire greatness and a love of learning in each of her students. She took special joy in working with English language learners and students with extra needs. When in Singapore she had the opportunity of assisting in the countries' first dual language immersion kindergarten program. In the last years of her teaching career she took great pleasure in mentoring two colleagues in their successful quest for National Teacher Certification. Her last day in the classroom was for the Valentine's Day party this year. Bev was an adventurer and world traveler who relished experiencing different languages and cultures. After college she took a bicycle trip around the world. She met her future husband cycling down highway 1 on the California coast. Together over the years they cycled Canada to Mexico on the west coast, from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean, extensively in France and were cycling from Canada to Florida when the recurrence of cancer interrupted their trip at the Outer Banks in North Carolina. She was a fiercely independent soul and defended the rights of women and minorities all her life. Bev was born on March 3, 1952; her father Vance died when she was just 11 years old. Beverly attended the first graduating class of Concord High School and enjoyed the special responsibilities of establishing school traditions for future classes. She remained close to several of her high school friends. A life-long Episcopalian, Bev's Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's Parish, Point of Rocks, Maryland on Saturday March 29 at 10:30 a.m. Gifts in memory of Beverly McNeilly can be made to Hillcrest School or the Judy Center, 1285 Hillcrest Dr., Frederick, MD 21703 or Macalester College, Donor Relations Office, 1600 Grand Avenue, St. Paul, MN, 55105, or online at macalester.edu. Mrs. Mcneilly was my kindergarten teacher in 1995. She was always so kind and patient with me. She never judged me and always made sure I wasn't sad. I had a hard life at home and she knew it. She kept me so happy and safe that one year of kindergarten. I had her again for first grade and I was ecstatic! My most favorite teacher teaching me? For first grade?! That was the best year ever at federal terrace. I moved away to ff and never really thought of going back. I wasn't sure if she'd remember me? But those wonderful childhood memories came back every so often and I smiled. Very recently I donated to federal terrace and it immediately made me think of my favorite elemtary school teacher. I wasn't sure how to find her so I thought I'd Google her. But I kept spelling her last name wrong. After many failed attempts I finally found out the correct spelling and looked her up today. This was the first thing I find and I cried like I was 5 and 6 again. I'm so very sorry for her loss. She was an amazing woman who made a very big impact on my life. I will never forget my favorite teacher.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Beverly. She contributed immensely to the lives of so many children and to the quality of work we accomplished as a staff at Federal Terrace, where Beverly worked for many years. She will be much missed and long remembered by all privileged to know her.

There wasn't a more smiley face than Bev's when she greeted her little 'uns at the Federal Terrace kindergarten door each morning, or welcomed guests into her home. The world will miss Bev...none more than Peter and Sarah who have the blessings and memories of the years they shared together. Love to you both.

My heart was saddened as I opened the Modoc Record today. Mrs McNeilly was my son Logan and daughters teacher here at Alturas Elementary. ( Kindergarten). With 4 kids you have a tendency to get used to having certain teachers...but had I known what I soon found out after having her....all 4 of my children would have had her. What a blessing she was...and when I did get a chance to work in her classroom it was fun, educational and well worth all my time!!!! Now...sadly I need to tell my children she has passed. I remember her leaving near the end of the year as she was teaching my daughter Harley. I often thought of her as I had hoped she had beaten that damn cancer!!!! Prayers to her family and daughter Sarah.
