These three Marines Lead me to a career in our beloved Corps; Coaches Hans Widenhoffer, Clair Slaughter and Dick Haynes. It was a privilege to play football for them, never forgetting they taught all of us more than football. I will always remain proud to have follow these three righteous and honorable Warrior Leaders into the Marines. Because of their Leadership I was able to successfully Command a Marine Rifle Company in heavy combat during the 77 day Battle for control of the Khe Sanh Combat Base, Republic of Vietnam, TET,1967/68. Their influence upon many of us during the 1957 and 1958 Seasons has lasted a lifetime. Their collective legacy is the stuff of books and movies. I pray that each of these gallant Men and Combat Marines are resting in the loving arms of our Lord and that their families, surviving children and grand children will never have to wonder, as President Reagan Said, "if they made a difference or not." These three Marines did, in spades! So to each of these Outstanding Gentlemen, Coaches and Marines, a final and hard earned salute, my heartfelt thanks and in HIS Holy Name, SEMPER FIDELIS.

I was honored to play under Coach Slaughter on the 1976 and 77 FCC Ram football teams. He will be missed by many of his players, myself included. Godspeed, Coach Slaughter.

The Good Lord used two men in my life to bring me to Himself. Clare was one one and Mike Mendez was the other. I saw The Lord in them and was drawn to Him through them. I can't wait to see them again in Heaven!

We lost a great Ram this week. Clare's stamp will always be on our football program here at Fresno City College!
He was a Ram legend and I hope to continue his standard of excellence.
