December 31, 2012
Mr. Durning was a war hero who endured horrific and untold experiences, combat injuries, capture and POW status during WWII. For many, many years he related the first-hand accounts of his many comrades-in-arms at
the PBS Memorial Day observances, and imparted to us the incalculable cost of freedom. He consistently honored those who have so honored us.

Mr. Durning belongs to that elite and small group of actors who are so accomplished and professional they make everything look easy. He could portray a character imbued with every vice or virtue and make them instantly believable to the viewer.

Like the aging Sea Captain Pete he portrayed in one of his last films, Mr. Durning has now taken his last voyage "out of our sight", but has left us with indelible memories of the many wondrous voyages on which he has taken us.

Thank you, Charles.

December 27, 2012
I always knew there was something very deep and very special about this man and his convincing portrayals in both comedy and drama. Indeed, even in his comedies there was a gravitas about him. I had no idea what he had been through in his childhood and later during the war. God tested him and then blessed him many times over. I note his mother died in 1982, so well after he had become a success, which must have been great for her to see after all her own hardship. God bless his family and friends. Charles Durning has always seemed to me like the charming father of a good friend, and that lives on.

God bless this great American and War Hero!! With tears flowing, I want to say "Thank You" for serving our country and fighting for freedom every where. I will always cherish Mr.Durning for his fine roles played in some of my favorite movies. I will never forget his readings with Ozzie Davis about the fighting in WW II during July 4th celebrations that were televised across America. As a member of 'The Greatest Generation' Mr. Durning made it possible for our nation to become the greatest ever on earth. We must remember him and all of that generation and must continue their efforts to forever keep America free and the Land of the Brave! May God bless your soul and, again, THANK YOU for your honor and courage.

To the Durning Family,
Thank you for allowing us to know more about a fantastic man. He was not only an actor but he had a message in each role. He could be funny. sad or oh so serious. He now rests in our Lords arms. May you also find peace in knowing him and the joy of the many memories you have.
December 26, 2012
Goodby, my brother. I'll see you in Heaven
December 26, 2012
I had the good fortune to work with Charles on a screenplay that I wrote in 2005. He was a consumate professional and one of the most fun and personable people I've ever met. He had everyone laughing with his stories and even a little bit of singing. Heaven became that much better and earth that much less with his passing. RIP Charlie, you were an amazing person.
December 26, 2012
Requiescat in Pace, amica me. Et gratias.
December 26, 2012
He was a great actor and a great veteran. I can remember when he celebrated Memorial day in DC reading and of some of our hereos who made the ultimate sacrifice. He also is a great Hero and he will not be forgotten.
December 26, 2012
Thank youfor your service & many laughs. You have given bak so much.
December 26, 2012
Mr. Durning's performance on NCIS was not acting, he was reliving the most god-awful thing that humans can do to one another. Thank you for your service and thank you for preserving our American way of life. We can never repay our debt to you- or the other 12, 000,00 who served in WW2.
December 26, 2012
You were just as great in your private life, as you were when you were performing. I will miss you and forever remember and be thankful for all of your contributions you made to this country, as well as on the screen.
December 26, 2012
Now I understand why his performance as a WWII veteran on a special Veteran's Day episode of NCIS several years ago was so moving. Though the episode had the action in the Pacific, not in Europe, he knew firsthand what he was portraying. Durning always found the truth of human nature in his characters, and something in his portrayal resonated with me. I happily chose to watch anything if he was in the cast.
December 26, 2012
My memory of the actor was his portrayal of a Medal of Honor recipient on NCIS, that killed his best friend. Coincidentally (or not), he married his high school sweetheart & had bad memories of the war. He did a terrific job!

- John D. (Woodbridge, VA)
December 26, 2012
Thank you sir for serving our country and for all the wonderful entertainment you've provided us with all these years. God Bless.
December 26, 2012
My dad had the opportunity of standing in as a double in "The Final Countdown" for Mr.Durning. When the helicopter returns back to the USS Nimitz, my father was the one exiting the helicopter holding his head from an injury that Mr. Durning sustained from the Japanese Zero attack on their boat.
It was a highlight in my dad's life to be able to associate with and stand in for Mr. Durning.
May God give him deserving rest, and may we all remember that Mr. Durning was an outstanding representative to our country for the service that he fullfilled during his military assignment.
God Bless him and his family!
December 26, 2012
R.I.P. Charlie. In the 70's you and your family were summertime neighbors at the Lake. You spent many a day sitting on my front porch with my parents while I was out playing w/ Michelle and Doug. And you always invited me backstage when i saw you on Broadway. You were a great actor, patriot and friend.
December 26, 2012
The country lost a great man this week. Charles was the true definition of the Greatest Generation. In 1998 I took my oldest son to Europe to visit the site of the D-Day Invasion and we used the Discovery Channel "Normandy the Great Crusade" narrated by Charles as our guide and visited every location he referenced. I have watched the tape many times and often think of Charles. I feel like I have lost a friend. I never got to meet him however I will pay my respects when I visit his grave site.

One of the great, big actors is gone. He will be with us forever as President Kennedy's grandfather and the humorous Nazi he acted so effortlessly. I liked him best as Dorothy's suitor in "Tootsie." Durning's delivery when he advises Michel that he's "lucky I didn't kiss you" is one of the Cinema's great moments. What a great American hero and talent we had in this man.
December 26, 2012

Oh My - until I read this obituary I never knew what a hero Mr. Durning was and how courageous. I last watched him as Tommy's father in Rescue Me and thought his interpretation of that role was genius. I never saw him that I was not impressed with his acting talent. It is amazing what he made of his life especially once you know how tragic his younger years were. What a great man you were Mr. Durning. Your passing is our loss.

As an aged soldier suffering from PTSD, who mistakenly thought he had killed a fellow soldier, in an episode of NCIS, Mr. Durning brought me to tears. Mr. Durning was gifted, talented, and above all, truly a class act. In a world of wannabes, he was the real thing. God rest your soul.

In memory of Charlie:

About 11 years ago I was directing my second movie, a small indie named "Dead Canaries". I was amazed to find out that Charlie liked the script and consented to play the led...a tough newspaper man.

In the 3 weeks of shooting I got to know Charlie on a personal level. This was one terrific man and human being. He was a war hero, a father and a gentleman. We kept in touch for many years and even got together when he was in NY.

Charlie was a great actor and an even better person. I will miss him. Luckily for all of us we are also able to watch his movies and remember what a great man this was.

THE STRONGEST MAN...(By Michael M. Kelly Sr.)
There never was a man so strong,
That the earth trembled as he walked about,
There never was a man so strong,
That the mountains shook when he would shout,
There never was a man so strong,
That the oceans would overflow if he wept,
But there was a man so strong,
That all that knew him will not forget.

I am sorry for your loss. May Charles dance among the stars in heaven.
December 25, 2012
Charles Durning was a wonderful actor but I count his military service in World War II as his biggest achievement. On at least three occasions, he shed blood for his country and endured some of the worst combat in the ETO. He carried the burden of seeing lives lost and having to take lives. I found out about this years ago and, like all the other actors who have served our military, I hold them in a lot higher regard. RIP, buddy!
