Interested in and capable of so much, he was a true entrepreneur and visionary, but most of all he was truly an intellectual caring about the unknown ---in the classical Greek tradition. He was my mentor and friend! He leaves such a wonderful legacy! Skip Porter

A few months after parents have left, it seems more difficult to beleive that they are not present to hug or to answer your questions. But they are present in the great visible gifts that they gave to Houston and Galveston. Their historic preservation work in Galveston impacted so many lives of people of all ages. Several years ago, I remember talking with your father on the phone, telling him about our challenge of trying to save the National Register Historic District of Freedmen's Town-4th Ward for future generations, for archaeology field schools, and for tourism. He patiently listened and encouraged us to do our best. A few years later we called again with an emergency plea for assistance to stop the demolition of two historic homes that were first purchased by two Freed woman in 1860's immediately after Emancipation. He quickly responded and sent us the balance that was needed to finally purchase and save the property to become dedicated Museum houses in honor of the 1st Black Attorney's and his wife, a teacher who worked in the Carnegie Colored Library.
You dear children have some large footsteps to follow. But after hearing Lorenze speak at Amigos de las Americas, I was convinced that you will all do great work in your lives. Your parents will be proudly watching you.

I had the opportunity to meet your father on several occasions and as you well know, he was a most generous man. His and his wife's contributions to the Houston/Galveston and the world are remarkable. I enjoyed your obituary very much and it is obvious that you understood your parents well. May the Lord bless and keep you, Respectfully submitted, Arly Nelson, Retired Professor, MD Anderson Cancer Cntr.

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. George Mitchell. I'll never forget that joyous glow he had when my band played "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" for him every year during the Galveston Mardi Gras celebration.

We in Galveston appreciate what Mr. Mitchell has done for us, and we will always thank him for generously sharing his life wisth us. He was down-to-earth, more than generous, and never mean-spirited or demanding to strangers or friends. Thank you, Mitchell family, for sharing him with us. Bless your hearts, and bless George's heart.

To the entire Mitchell Family, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy in the loss of this wonderful, humble, and caring man. He was such a dear person, and I, like so many others, will never forget him. I went to high school with Mark, and I knew some of the other boys as teens, and all of them were extremely nice and caring, even then. It was clear they were raised well. I pray for peace and comfort as well as joy in the memories, as it was a blessing to have him in their lives as long as they did. Sincerely, Carol Jamail McAliley

I just now became aware of George Mitchell by watching a Televised lecture by James Woolsey at the Johns Hopkins Univ. School of Advanced Int'l Studies on July 8 2013. Mr. Woolsey talked glowingly of what Mr. Mitchell went through to develop fracking and how he was derided for chasing a seemingly impossible dream. But George Mitchell succeeded and changed the energy landscape. He is a real-life, modern-day, American-made superhero! I was researching how to contact him to write of my admiration and was saddened to learn of his recent passing. What a tremendous National Resource he was! The Industry in which he played such a major role will undoubtedly miss him. Everyone in the Country owes this remarkable man a debt of gratitude.
