Today I found out that my dear friend Scott passed away. I am lost for words to describe my sadness and deepest condolences to his family. I was a friend of Scott's when he was station in Massachusetts. He would visit me often at my home in Boston. The world is at a great loss with the passing of Scott. He was a very fine person with a brilliant personality. As a veteran I am proud of Scott's achievements and dedication to the USCG and his country. I will miss Scott and will never forget him. In his memory I will plant a tree in my yard this spring. Peace eternal ole'friend.

I just found out very recently about the passing of this kind and wonderful soul. I met Scott when he was on the cape and although we only spent a few short periods of time together he is someone who would come into my thoughts fairly often. May he rest in peace.

I just found out about Scott's unexpected death yesterday and was shocked. I am sincerely sorry for the loss of this extremely talented, friendly and overall good person. I have thought of him often since we met in Alameda and will continue to do so but with a sadness in my heart.

Scotty, We have a lot of memories together; but the ride to Stinson Beach and Redwoods will always live in my mind. You are deeply loved and missed. Peace my friend.

Scott was my brother-in-law and I considered him a true friend. He and my daughter Amelia had a very special bond. The day she was born (6/1/07) he hopped a flight to be with us and stayed the long weekend to help with all the little things you don't realize you need help with. Everything from assembling strollers to cooking dinner, doing laundry and shopping. He also bought Amelia the entire Disney DVD catalog of kids animated movies. It still doesn't seem real that he's gone but I find strength in knowing he'll always be Amelia's guardian angel. We miss you Scott...

Scott attended my birthday dinner with a good friend of mine. He was fun, full of life and energy and very easy to get to know and get along with. This is a shock and a surprise and my heart goes out to his family and friends
January 18, 2010
I met Scott for the first time in CPO Academy. He was a great person and I will miss him.
January 18, 2010
I met Scott while he lived on Cape Cod. Meeting him was like knowing an old friend- it was just like that. I still can't believe he's gone and I miss him dearly. He and I both couldn't wait to escape this rock called Cape Cod. I just know he loved being down in DC. He was the type of person who had an effect on your life even if you met him for a moment. Scott was an amazing person and heaven is lucky to have him.

Scott,
I met you here in San Francisco, You always had such an amazing spirit and a way to make everyone smille when you walked into the room. You gave my The Mickey Mouse Statue when you found out I collected Mickey Items. I will always remember our time together, and will always have regrets not trying harder to find you after we lost touch, and reading the news in the paper today tore my heart out. Sure your in heaven now making everyone smile up there, my blessings goes out to your family you will be missed. Mark

I met Scott in 2003 or 2004, when he was stationed in Oakland and living in San Francisco. We became friends quickly, which is no surprise to any of you. It was a sad day when he was transferred to the East Coast, but an even sadder one on the day we learned of his passing.

Scott has many connected friends in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is missed by us all.

Though I Did know Him well, He is my Nephew, and He is Family.I will Miss you Scotty

A most remarkable man who was so focused and knew what he wanted. It was a true privilege to know him. Good bye my friend.
January 08, 2010
I worked with Scott in Alameda, CA I'm very sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with his family.
January 08, 2010
Dear Karen and Tateum, we were shocked by the news of Scott's death. It was far too soon, but we firmly believe God needed him more than we did. He really was like an angel. We met him ten years ago in NYC and he became like family to us almost immediately. Our most recent memory is when he visited us in October 2006 to be at our daughter's baptism. Scott insisted on paying for her cake. He was generous to a fault and taught us all how to find the best in everyone. We will miss him so much. God bless you all. We pray you find comfort in fond memories you certainly have of this remarkable young man. Love, Stacy and Donna Graffam and family (Zachary and Nicolotte)

I did not know Scott, but my son Jason roomed with him at CPO Academy. I am so deeply sorry for your loss, and for the the loss of a fine Guardian who served his country so well. I know that words cannot truly ease your pain, but I truly hope that you are supported by the compassion of the many people who love you and who cared for Scott...as well as those of us like me who don't know you but send our deepest sympathies.

I was truly shocked when I learned of his passing, not even 30 years old! I remember Scott from A school, working the Pacific Marine Expo in Seattle and his Chiefs Initiation at Cape Cod, where I met his mom, a truly proud day. Good guy, hard worker, loyal, honest and friendly, all the qualities of a true shipmate.
January 06, 2010
It only seems like yesterday when I first met Scott when we were stationed on the CGC MELLON together. He was always thinking of others more than of himself and gave his time for listening, caring, and just being there for others. He was a true SHIPMATE to everyone. I'm grateful to have known him and he will always have a piece in my heart for him. I wish I could have known him longer but know that he's standing the watch and keeping an eye on those who have had the privilege of knowing him. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family and friends. May you know that he lived his life to the fullest and that he has made a profound impact on everyone that has known him during his Coast Guard Career; volunteer services and to those who were close to him.
January 06, 2010
Scott and I met when he was stationed with us in Eatons Neck NY. Seaman Newberry then used to house sit for us and just come and hang out with us. After our first child was born on our first valentines day he "made" us take his tickets to footloose and go into the city to see the play. One of the many things Scott liked to do in New York City. We had so much fun and I will forever be grateful for the fun memories that we had with him.

Seeing him as a Chief was a wonderful contribution to the Coast Guard and we have lost a wonderful man with a great big huge heart.

To his family I am sorry for your loss and hope you know that Scott is now in heaven watching over all of us. He is on a perpetual watch now.

Thank you for letting us all get to know your son and allowing us to learn so much from him...
January 06, 2010
I was very sad to learn of Scott's passing. I've worked with him in Alameda, he was always helping others and making sure that things were done the right way. He truly loved the Coast Guard, I will remember you forever. My prayers are with the family.
January 06, 2010
It was an honor and privilege to have known Scottie since when he lived in California. He was a loyal friend, a squared away Coastie, a handsome heartbreaker, and had that million-dollar smile that would make you grin right back at him. He was a total joy to be around. Scottie could be so serious when he was talking about his Coast Guard duties, but the very next minute he would have me falling off my chair regaling me with another story about how single handily he was making sure everyone under his command was as squared away as he was. I would call him Coastie Scottie and he would remind me it was Chief Newberry. From the Coast Guard hymn: "Watch over the ones who guard our coast, protect them from the raging seas, and give them light and life and peace." Scott, may you rest in peace, you live on in my memories and in my heart.

Scott was a ray of sunshine to all who knew him. He was one of my husband's best friends and when I met him 3 years ago, we instantly bonded. He was in our wedding and we had plans to go skiing with him in 2 weeks. I know he will live on in our hearts forever. I miss him terribly, and I send my deepest condolences to his family.
January 05, 2010
A young life taken too soon. It was great skiing with you in Stowe,VT last year you will be missed.

January 05, 2010
It seems that everyone has said everything that I could ever say. Scotty was a compelling individual, smart, funny and savy. He made his presence known and that is what I loved about him. The first time he came to my home, it was if my home was his, which it was. We were always bonded in life but not connected until 2005. Wow, why couldn't you have been in my/our life sooner. However, we are grateful to have had you in our life despite that your time was cut too short. We were definitely looking forward to having you at our home at Thanksgiving and Christmas every year. In your memory, your stocking will be hanging by the chimney every year so don't you forget to come in spirit. You are forever in our hearts and I wish I could be there to say goodbye, but truly this is not goodbye my friend, I will see you again in our next life and I only can be so privy to do so. Thanks for the laughs and all your help during cooking in my small kitchen, and for loving my son. I know he will miss you; I will be sure to tell him all about you when he is old enough to understand and tell him about how you set up his new train set; I hope he grows up to be just like you. Please look down on him and keep him safe my friend. xoxo
January 05, 2010
Scott was great to watch as he ran his HS swimmers through dryland and lane excercises to get and keep them in shape. He was a breath of fun and fresh air when he appeared on deck. In the brief moments he was with us he did make an impact and he will be missed from the J&MSwim family. Peace be with you.
January 05, 2010
Karen, my memories are many and positive! My friendship is very strong! Scott's in heaven now and "guarding" us all. Your friends will help you!
January 05, 2010
The Curl Burke family will sadly miss having Scott coaching on deck. He was very dedicated to the Coast Guard, but seemed to really be in a good place when coaching his high school swimmers. They were very attentive to him and seemed to love his "drill Sargent" style. He was affectionately known as "Chief". We all appreciate the short time that we had to get to know him. God speed Scott.
January 05, 2010
My sincere condolences to the family. I was Scott's Commanding Officer aboard USCG Cutter MELLON (WHEC 717). He was a true SHIPMATE; and for a cutterman, that is the highest praise one can earn...Fair winds & calm seas, SHIPMATE!

I worked with Scott for a few years in Alameda, California. A smart man who was always ready to help. I enjoyed working with him and getting to know him. I was speechless when I heard. My sincere condolencses.
January 04, 2010
My thoughts and prayers go out to Scott's family and friends. I only met Scott in Sept of 2009, but I knew instantly that his enthusiasm and zeal for life made him special. I had the opportunity to coach along side of him at J&M Swim as he learned the ropes, and I watched the kids soak in his infectious spirit. You can tell when a coach is well liked when they are given a nickname...the kids nicknamed Scott "Chief." I feel honored to have had the time with him, and I know that he will be greatly missed by both the coaching staff and swimmers here at J&M Swim in Alexandria.
January 04, 2010
We were so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow.
January 04, 2010
What a wonderful, kind and thoughtful friend. He always kept in touch and was a joy to be around.
January 04, 2010
My deepest condolences to you Karen, Tateum, and everyone else in the family. Scott was a great kid who became an admirable man who was destined to even more for the USCG. I wish I could be there during this tragic time.

We only met Scott in the summer of 2009, but quickly became friends and adored him as did others. Though we only knew him for a short time, he made us feel as if we had been friends forever. He was a beautiful and compassionate human being who will be missed deeply.
January 04, 2010
Scott was always a joy to be around and a true laugh to talk to. He will be missed and may god watch over him and his family.
January 04, 2010
I will miss Scotties sunshine and cheer that he spread to all who met him. My fondest (or perhaps just funniest) memory of Scott was the time we went camping. Our trip started out great and we had a great first few hours hanging out around the fire and laughing and talking. We knew there was a storm brewing but didn't think much of it, and we had no electronics with us to monitor it. But we were Coast Guardsmen so we would be "fine". As it turned out the storm developed into a tropical storm! As the weather picked up, there was a bad feeling in the air and my husband and I decided to retire to our camper. I offered to let Scott sleep in our camper with us, but he proceeded to pitch the tinyest tent i've ever seen, bragging all the while that he was a outdoorsy dude and a little rain wouldn't bother him. Around 2 in the morning it started torrential rains and wind was howling! While my husband and I kept watch over Scott from our camper window all night long, his little tent never faltered. And although he wouldn't admit it, I know Scott had to have a very sleepless night that night. Scott, Matt and I laughed about that night many, many times. I have very fond memories of my friend and I was honored to have known Scott.
January 04, 2010
Karen and Tateum,
I am so sorrowful for your loss. Even though I did not personally know Scott, I remember both of you talking about him with love and admiration. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

January 04, 2010
My thoughts and prayers to the members of Scott's family. I had the privilege to meet "Scottie" only once. In the short time that I knew Scottie, I want the family to know that his laughter, smile and attitude regarding life was infectious and it left me wanting to know more about him and for him to be a part of my life. I will miss him and will always wonder what the future may have held for us as friends. May he rest in peace.
January 04, 2010
We only got to know you these last couple of months. But the impact you had on our staff and our swimmers will long be remembered. You were a very special person and we at J & M swim will miss you very much
January 04, 2010
I was honored to know Scott and to be his best friend here in the DC area. He was one of the most caring and compassionate men I have ever met. Scott always put the care of his friends before that of himself. For those who really knew Scott, his humor was infectious and that smile lit up a room. In our last discussion, we discussed the ongoing plans for his birthday celebration scheduled for this upcoming weekend. My nickname for him was Junior. He will always hold a very special place in my heart. I am so sorry that his life was cut short and I feel your loss.
January 04, 2010
When my family & I moved to Colo Spgs 18 yrs ago Scott was one of the first kids on the block that I had met. Scott & my sister Deanna became good friends. Even went to homecoming together. Scott did come around in the last 5 years. We had the privildge of being around his wonderful personality. My mom & Scott got a long very well. My family & I were all very sorrowfull to hear of his loss. Scott- we love you!!
January 04, 2010
Love and light to Scott's family. I met Scott several times as he coached for the Curl-Burke swim team in Northern Virginia. He was so happy to be at the pool with the kids and so enthusiastic. I know he made a positive difference in many lives just from seeing him these few times.
January 04, 2010
Scott and I had many humor filled talks about how the world should be. It was truly a pleasure and honor knowing him. May God bless you and your family.
January 04, 2010
Chief Newberry and I only knew each other a short time. We arrived at NAVCEN on the same day in July and went to lunch together that day. During our talks he was always extremely helpful and encouraging and I was looking forward to the next time. Chief Operations Specialist Scott Newberry had a wonderful spirit and he will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who loved him.
January 03, 2010
I'm so sorry for your loss.

I first met Scott when he was a Seaman at Coast Guard Station Eatons Neck. I was a Telecommunications Specialist First Class assigned to the Regional Systems Manager position at the Group Moriches Electronic Support Detachment. Scott and I spent many a day talking about his future in the Coast Guard and he eventually attended TC A School following in my foot steps. We often hung out together going to clubs on weekends on Long Island as well as in New York City. I attended my first Broadway show "RENT" with Scott on one of weekend excursions into the Big City. I eventually retired from the Coast Guard while at East Moriches NY.

I moved to Colorado after my retirement and tried numerous times to locate Scott hoping to visit with him while he was home on leave from time to time but unfortunately never caught up with him.

I will keep Scott in my thoughts and prayers as I bid him "Fair Winds and Following Seas".
January 03, 2010
We will miss Scott the friend, the godfather to our youngest, Yeshua, the coastie, the man. You were as unique and lovable as anyone could be. You will surely be missed, but my heart you will remain always.
January 03, 2010
Scott, you dealt with me time and time again. Patiently answering all my questions. You opened doors and lighted the way with humor and conviction. And I sit here, wishing you could pick me up at the airport on Sunday, to see you one more time and thank you for letting in a young man like me into your life. I'm sorry I never let you see me swim. But, I know that you can now watch anytime you want from heaven. Sarah and I both miss you immensely.
January 03, 2010
Heart breaking loss we are so sorry.
January 03, 2010
Our sincere condolences to you and your family. Scott touched our lives through our son, Sam. Scott took Sam under his wing when Sam approached Scott about becoming a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer. In August 2009, Sam surprised Scott by introducing himself when he saw Scott in uniform at a Metro stop. Scott was most gracious and patiently answered Sam's many questions. Although we never had the good fortune to meet Scott, he was a good man and his memory will be cherished.

Dear Karen, Tateum and family: I am deeply saddened by the death of your son and brother. I know you were very proud of his achievements in the Coast Guard. My prayers go out to all of you. May God bless his soul.

I have very fond memories of you coming with my sister, neices and myself trick-o-treating in Bothell, WA when you were stationed here and never laughing so dam hard!
You are truly one of the creator's great angels that has blessed us here on earth, even if it was for only a short time!
January 02, 2010
Scotty was the love of my life. A true friend, he was family. We had always planned for him to be my "bridesman" when I got married. Scotty and I left each other voice mails monthly singing "Your Song" off the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. That was our song. He left me a vm a week before his passing and I never called him back. I regret this terribly and listen to his message daily. He ended his message with "I love you Trishy". I love you too Scotty. I know you are my guardian angel and that I will see you in my dreams. I'm sending prayers to his family..you had a wonderful son. I loved him and always will. I love you Scotty. Love Trishy
January 02, 2010
May God gently hold you and surround you with his love and peace during this time of sadness and loss. As each moment passes, may your hearts be comforted by all the cherished memories of Scott. We hold dear to those memories as he grew up with our boys on Soft Breeze. Love,

Chief Newberry had an enthusiasm for life that was infectious. He was a unique and outstanding individual, not easily forgotten. Just two weeks ago, he hosted the NAVCEN Christmas party, complete with a white elephant gift exchange (which he mediated). His personality really carried the party. It was great fun for all. He will be greatly missed, for his personality, obvious pride in the Coast Guard, and for the professionalism he consistently displayed.
January 01, 2010
WE love you Scott...

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here,
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light,
Goodnight dear Friend,
Goodnight, goodnight.
