Amazing how this old Southern Rock aficionado settled down every Sunday evening when Marian!s NPR show came on. For me musically, she induces a paradigm shift. James Lawson , Pauline, SC

Such a nice, friendly down-to-earth lady whom I met 25 years ago through IAJ International Art of Jazz out here on Long Island, Setauket. Loved her NPR programs.

I was sad to hear of Marian's passing. I met her in NYC at a jazz club with my boss, Roger Brousso. I was working in the record business at the time. May she rest in peace.
August 28, 2013
I had little interest in jazz when I discovered Marian on NPR.
I went out and bought a piano!
What a gutsy lady! RIP sweetheart

To my good friend Mary, thank you for so publicly sharing your mother with the world. What a gift she was to all us jazz fans and most certainly to you. She's tipping the ivory in heave now. May your loss be lifted by the joy she brought to so many.

Elegant, understated, collegial, delightful... the consummate piano artist. Marian McPartland's music is our usual choice after work and over dinner. We are sad to lose her presence in the musical community and we hope for the comfort of her friends and family.

I grew to love the format of Piano Jazz with Marian McFarland. She was true to herself no matter who the guest. She is incomparable.

Just want to join the chorus of folks who loved hearing Marian play and talk with countless outstanding musicians on NPR. Her awesome talents will be sorely missed.

What a Great Woman!

She was consummate Swing!
What a Life! What a Lady!
What a formidable Soul. I was
privileged to be present a few years ago for the debut of a Documentary of her Life at the
Port Washington, LI public library! And Ms. McPartland was fully present and smiled
knowingly at what we had all
witnessed on screen and rhapsodized. Thank you for
always being yourself.

As a 14 year old child I saw Marian play. I have attended many concerts, but can't remember seeing a more beautiful and enchanting performance. She had the ability to fill a room with sparkling, inspired sound.

Marian's service to this planet over her lifetime is testament to all that is good in this world. Thank you. My thoughts are with her loved ones. R.I.P.

A few years ago, I was listening to my PBS radio station, and wondered who this person was that I was listening too. The more I heard, the more I liked this lady. I found that this lady was on weekly. At the end of the broadcast, I heard the name Marian McPartland. After listening, and learning SO MUCH, it is such a terrible day to hear of this great ladys' passing. All of our past jazz greats are waiting for her. What a jam session that will be occurring. My prayers for her family. I will always think of her while I'm driving on Sunday afternoons.

I loved her so much. What a wonderful life, she made that piano her own.

I was saddened to learn of M.M.'s passing yesterday. She brought countless hours of listening pleasures to me over the years. Condolences to her loved ones and may she rest in peace.

R.I.P. dear lady. I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to see her perform at Severance Hall in Cleveland in the '80s and to have enjoyed her music for so many years. What an accomplished and delightful human being.

For more decades than I care to remember, this old man has listened to and appreciated the unique talents of Marian McPartland. She certainly had a soul for jazz. One of the first women to successfully play in what was, at the time, an all-male genre.
She very quickly earned the respect of
the "greats" of jazz. I loved her style. And her radio show on NPR was
top-drawer. We'll miss you, kid!

Marian always performed an interesting and entertaining show on NPR, and her insights into the jazz world were very astute, and made the genre easier to understand. May she rest in peace.

Your light of musical talent will forever shine in the hearts of those who loved to listen to your message in music. Your touch was a blessing from God.
Never met you, but listened to your music on many occasions.
Heaven is having a great concert with you there.

You were my hero!!!

I was absolutely shocked when I heard of the passing of another GIANT of jazz. Marian and her trio were so smooth. One of my favorite albums of hers was one that she did with George Shearing, it was recorded in the late 40s. Piano jazz was such a great show on NPR where she would interview the artists and would play songs with them. It won't be the same now. I can just imagine the awesome jam session in heaven with all the legends that have passed on. Well now they just added another great piano player. May god bless her family at this sad loss. Rest in Peace Marian and thank you for all your wonderful music, I am so glad we will have her wonderful music to remember her by.

HER PIANO 'SANG' as she dove, slide and soared ever-so-lightly, or, with strength she brought to it. It was intuitive under the experience and personality she brought to her renderings. She was fun and engaging to learn from; even greater was the happy-listening as she took us through a journey of any singular piece she interpreted. THANKS SO, IT WAS A GRAND JOURNEY AND HOPE IT'S GOING FORWARD FOR YOU, MARIAN. CHEERS!- grateful appreciation, you rocked the house !

Please accept my sympathy for your loss. May all be comforted by the wonderful promise: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more. Neither mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

I so enjoyed Mrs. McPartland's talk show on NPR, it truly was one of my favorites. She had such a charming personality and the perfect radio interview format style - like being right there in the studio with her and her guests in the moment. Most delightful, were the wonderful interviews with legendary jazz greats and her engaging stories about collaborative experiences. I loved it when she'd top it off by graciously asking if the two might play a piece together. Never disappointing, she always left me feeling good, uplifted and inspired. She increased my knowledge on an earlier jazz era and most importantly, Mrs. McPartland elicited fond memories of my parents and the fine music I grew up hearing in my home. My prayers go out to the family of a truly great musician and classy lady. May the memories you hold sustain you a peace I now find when thinking of Mrs. McPartland.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of a well known jazz artist. May the family find comfort in the psalmists words at Psalms 23:1-6.

Smooth as silk. A great personality for all times. Will miss piano jazz.
August 21, 2013
I first heard her play in the 50s at Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit...she was wonderful then; I listened on PBS wheneever I could and saw her at Bob Carr in Orlando.
August 21, 2013
For those of us who so enjoyed listening to her through the years, she is a great talent and will be greatly missed.

What an inspiration Ms. McPartland has been, and will always be. Stepping "out of the box" to realize all that she is, and make a great mark in history.

Sweet rest is her deserved reward.

I got the thrill of seeing her twice at BSU in Muncie, IN. Both times she met people after her performance, talking and signing autographs. I was so fortunate to have witnessed her talent and personality. We have lost a really great artist.
August 21, 2013
What a full, rich, and wonderful life. Thank you, Ms. McPartland, for the music you brought into the world. I always looked forward to your weekly NPR program and will most remember your infectious laughter and your incredible musical memory. It seemed like anyone could name a "tune" (as you called all compositions) and you would immediately begin playing a masterful version of it--while also supplying a terrific anecdote about its origins or composer. You were a great lady and a great pianist. Thanks again so very much for the memories.
August 21, 2013
A late-comer fan of jazz and Piano Jazz - I've learned a lot about many people in the jazz world and the music itself. Thanks, Marian.
August 21, 2013
Thank You Marian for bringing your fabulous talent to St. Charles and the Dellora A. Norris Cultural Arts Center. One of my first loves of jazz. Thanks for the memories!
August 21, 2013
For the last 25 years Marian was a very important part of my life, she brought me joy and happiness with her supreme art and sublime interpretations. More over I had the privilege to share with her so many moments when we talked quietly and she immerse me in the fascinating world of people and moments of this marvelous thing which is jazz, that we love so much.
Marian was a magnificent human being and in her unique way she touched all the fibers of our souls.
I admired her and loved her, it has been an honor and an immense privilege to be her friend. She will live in me for all my life.
August 21, 2013
I will miss her enormous talent, and her engaging personality. Huge, irreplaceable loss.
