I worked with Bob in Dan Koshland, Jr.'s laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry at UC Berkeley. He was a postdoctoral fellow when I was a graduate student. He actually picked up a project that I had been working on somewhat reluctantly and did a much finer job with it than I ever could have done. Bob was very smart and very funny; is it appropriate for me to share with everyone that he was referred to as "The Prince of Mischief?"
Bob was also generous and caring. When I cut my palm with the glass from a broken sidearm of a defective filter flask and essentially went into shock because of the blood loss (I still have a large scar), it was Bob who got me to the hospital. I had the privilege of continuing as Bob's friend; he hosted me in Amherst and I hosted him in West Lafayette, IN. I was able to visit him most recently just after Memorial Day. A brave man.
