Gene McDaniels passing was a great shock to me and a terrible loss to us folks who really Admire and take pleasure in a God given voice and talent such as Gene's. I still sit down at my computer nightly and find his songs on You Tube and can't get over just how magnificent and wonderfully that voice/lyrics/music sound even today. I followed him since I was a teen, the Army, marriage and still, to this day take great pleasure in listening to Gene. Damn, what a loss! May he rest in peace and hope he's singing in God's choir.

The death of Gene McDaniels garnered very little attention in the news, but what a loss for those of us of that generation. "Chip Chip" and "A Hundred Pounds of Clay" are on my iPod, and I tend to play them over and over. What a great, gentle and yet powerful voice. We have lost so many of the great ones (Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke), and now we have lost Gene to that great concert in the sky. What a jam that's going to be!

Tower of Strength and A Hundred Pounds of Clay were two songs I really liked. Hearing those songs remind me of the many wonderful memories from my childhood. May his family find comfort in the promise of Jesus Christ, and the fact he was loved my all.

My husband and I met Gene McDaniels through his first wife, Wanda. I worked with her at Los Angeles County Schools. He was a talented and likable person. I had relatives in the music business including Bill Douglass, drummer who played with Gerald Wiggins, Red Calendar, Marshall Royal among
others.

I had "Tower of Strength" and "Chip Chip" on 45s as a young child. I loved those songs and the singer behind them. A few months ago I found them on iTunes and have been enjoying them again, as much as when I was 5 years old, and telling others about them. I'm so sad to hear of Mr. McDaniels's passing. There is a soft spot in my heart for his music. DET

I met Gene in Omaha, Nebraska in 1960 just before '100 Lbs of Clay' became a breakout hit across the country. We had been playing the song at KOIL and the response was huge. Gene was the first celebrity this 18 year old fledgling disc jockey interviewed on the air. After all these years I still remember his warmth and personal charm. We had something in common, too: We both shared a lust for the groundbreaking instant classic Jaguar XKE sports car. Gene disclosed that his accountant advised he wait on the car until final sales results of '100 Lbs. of Clay' were in. I hope he managed to get the car. The song was/is fantastic and whenever it spins in my head fond memories of Gene McDaniels come flooding back. Rest in peace, Gene. My condolences to the family. If there is a memorial fund I would be pleased to make a contribution.

I only heard today (thanks to the BBC Radio 2 Brian Matthew show) about the very recent (and under-reported in UK) demise of that geat singer, Gene McDaniels.

I cannot recall having read anything about it at the time in the British neswpapers that I read.

As mentioned below, on the other hand, it was good to hear "Point of no Return" on the Beeb again.

My recently acquired "Hits CD" (from a market stall many miles away and seen by chance) enabled me to hear "Another Tear Falls" which appeared - perhaps surprisingly - in the British Film "It's Trad Dad" in a very mooody smoke-filled club scene, I think.

A great performance permanently etched on my brain, complete with excellent cinemaphotography for atmosphere too.

Gene was a greatly underestimated singer/songwriter and there must have been a very long gap before I heard any record of his played on British or American radio.

The less said about the British cover versions of his US hits the better but they were all inferior to my mind, both at the time and now.

If only I had seen him live - and we've been to Kittery many times from England!

And what a great voice - at least he made some well deserved income from his song writing.

Thanks Gene for giving so much pleasure to an appreciative - though very select - audience.

My condolences to Mrs McDaniels and family.
