As a teenager, I drove my grandmother to Dr. Schertz as she was treated for cancer. I went with her for many appointments, but the first visit I was so upset and emotional as I sat quietly in the corner of the office. His words and kindness that day was engraved into my mind forever. He committed to me that with everything in him he would take good care of my grandmother. He always was so compassionate to my grandmother, and our entire family. Now I offer that very compassion back to his family.

Dr. Schertz was my father's physician during his battle with prostate cancer that had advanced to bone cancer throughout his body. Dr. Schertz was a compassionate man who was gifted in his field. He blessed so many people in his work and we were all blessed by God to have met him. My father passed in Dec. 2005 and my mother & I have not forgotten the kindness of Dr. Schertz during my father's last days. We are both saddened by this tragedy that has taken him from you. May God bless your family and provide you with comfort. Dr. Schertz will be missed.

Dr. Schertz was the kindest and most caring physician I have ever met. I am currently a medicine resident at VCU and am pursuing a career in Oncology in large part because of my time spent with him on rotation as a medical student. He is a man I am proud to call my mentor and I will certainly never forget him and how he taught me to care for the whole patient, not just their disease. I had the fortune of accompanying him to various hospitals where he was always treated as family and I certainly could see why. His effect on me was profound and I hope to honor his memory by becoming an oncologist with a dedication to others akin to his. He spoke about his family often with me and you are all in my thoughts as well -- he was truly one of a kind.

My deepest heartfelt condolences goes out to the family. We have all lost a very great man and physician. May your treasured memories give you comfort as days and weeks pass.
Dr. Schertz treated me 24 years ago. His knowledge and care got me through that scary time, but his compassion is something my husband and I will never forget. Keeping you all in my prayers as God gives you strength and comfort from above.

Dr. Schertz was a wonderful consultant for our practice. We always knew our patients would be in good hands, that they would be treated with kindness and respect, and that I would be allowed to continue my care and involvement as their family doctor. We were very lucky to have such a caring doctor in our community, and his work will go on. How sad that we have such fragile bodies, susceptible in a routine dash from hospital to office, done a million times. May we all strive to be as dedicated as this man until our moment comes.

What a tragic loss for the family and community. I was not familiar with Dr Schertz, but he must have been an amazing man. Blessings, Peace & comfort to you and yours.

I was most saddened to read of Dr. Schertz's sudden, tragic death last week. I was President of the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Cancer Society when Dr. Schertz moved to Roanoke and became a vital, moving force in the distinguished group of medical practitioners in this most fortunate community. I also had a good friend and neighbor who was treated by Dr. Schertz and remember a conversation he shared with me about the care he received from Dr. Schertz. It is little wonder from the comments one reads from other patients, family members and colleagues that this community is shaken to the core by Dr. Schertz's untimely death!
May his dear family, whom I remember from their very early age, and dear wife Denise find comfort and love from God as they adjust to this challenge He has set before THEM!
