I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cliburn at his Westover Hills estate several years ago. He was such a gracious, unassuming man even though his talent was beyond compare. After telling my parents about meeting him, they gave me their album 'Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1', which I treasure. My Grandfather had given it to my Mom when he learned they were moving to Texas. He told her she needed to hear the "Texas Kid", Van Cliburn. He was an inspiration not only to pianists worldwide but also his fellow Fort Worth citizens. Thoughts and prayers with Tommy Smith, his friends and family.
