We are saddened to hear today of the passing of Smitty. He was such a great person and we enjoyed seeing him at the Marine reunions every year (including this past year in Nashville.)He and my father, John Link, served together in the 4th Marine Division in WWII. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
God Bless You, Smitty. I finally identified you in one of the photos my Uncle took on Iwo and called your home to tell you about it. That is how I learned of your passing and I am deeply sorry I could not find it sooner. You are one a few people that new my Uncle during the war, and I will miss you too.
'Smitty' became a wonderful friend when I worked at Ritz Camera. It was always a treat to see him enter our store. My deepest sympathies to his much beloved family. He will be missed by many.
Faye, Bunny, and Toni...I have always treasured the crazy rides to school when Smitty crammed all of us into the car, taking Marty and me to Robert E. Lee and Bunny to GW! His was always so energetic, loving, and big-hearted. I still hold Marty in my heart, and I will hold him, too. Love to you all,
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Your Dad was a legend in Danville and made a difference in so many lives. May your memories and his love bring you much comfort.
Mrs Smith and Family,
I was very much saddened to hear of the loss of Smitty. He was great guy. I hope his passing will be accepted with the knowledge that we will see him again in a much better place.
He has touched many of our lives and will be greatly missed in our community
Mrs. Smith and family, I am so sorry to hear about Smitty. Smitty was kind enough to allow me to volunteer in his PT department at the hospital in the 80's. I was thinking about a career in PT, though I didn't end up being a PT I will never forget all that I learned working with Smitty. There was difinately never a dull moment when he was around. I was amazed at what he could make in his brace shop. He was also my grandfather's PT after he broke his neck. The Dr's said he wouldnt walk again but with Smitty's help he did! Danville has certainly lost a one of a kind treasure. Praying that God will give your family peace and comfort in the coming days. I know that Heaven is a brigher place and they are definately being entertained!!

We will miss Smitty. He contributed so much to physical therapy in VA and to the department of Physical Therapy at MCV at VCU. It is hard to believe he is gone. We will miss you!
Smitty was my first boss and he was larger than life. I have never met someone who was so interested in life, but who truly cared for so many! There is and will only be one Smitty! RIP
My love, thoughts and sympathy are with you. Ivey Williamson Dodd
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
"Larger Than Life," has been used to describe certain people, Accessible as a Best Friend, others. Both phrases describe "Smitty" to a "T."
I first met him fifty years ago, it seems like just yesterday. With him for five minuts, and you felt like you've known him all your life. Smitty was a, "What You See is What You Get," kind of guy--he put on no airs. When you were with him, he made you feel like you were the most important person in the room.
There are just some people that you can't ever imagine being gone, Charlie is one of those.
We all Miss you good friend...
I wanted you to know that I will be thinking of you Fay and your family. I so enjoyed Smitty while working with him. It is a loss for the entire community.
