A. Campos ( Los Angeles, CA)
As a girl, in Minnesota, my first recollection is from a radio station that was broadcasting, from St. Paul, at the time. Went from beading, and quill work stories, to real life politics, in short order.
You have taught me grace, bravery, and the dire need to stand up for what I believe . . . a good portion of which, you shaped.
Great messenger, you will live in my heart, always. I only hope to make your example, real in this world.
With Love, and all the blessings due you.
Your faithful friend.
Kathryn
We have lost an incredible being. He has taught so many so well. Please heed this man's words and listen deeply to your spirit. Guidance is there. Our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of this amazing soul.
It takes a warrior who cares about their people to fight the fight. Even Jesus became angry and threw tables over. Sometimes it takes people like Mr. Means to stir the pot for change. God bless him and his family at this time of sorrow. May he lift the spirits of many more warriors.
Though your journey on this earth has now ended, a new journey for you begins. You showed incredible courage to us all. You stood up for what you believed in and showed us all that no matter the battle - you fight for what is right. You will be missed here on earth, but your memory will live on in the hearts of your loved ones.
Let him continue to guide us. We are listening.
What a wonderful spirit that will always soar !
My mother had met him on several occasions. She told me how potent his presence was. She also told me that she, like so many others, was captivated by his words. My mother was an activist, battling for TWLF (Third World Liberation Front) in Northern CA, then the Alcatraz Occupation, and she had many friends in AIM. I was very young and remember her being gone a lot. When she got home, she had many stories for me. She would bring me bracelets – I unpacked those a few months ago, just about five years after her death. I guess what I am trying to say is the point here is that in order to be heard, reach goals, and impart knowledge on people, some feelings -and worse- may be hurt. More importantly, rather than choosing our heroes, we need to choose our beliefs. I am not ambivalent about Russell's death; I am sad. It leaves me with a feeling of emptiness that just hangs in the air. I see our Native American modern-day warriors slowly becoming our Native American elders, and it makes my heart heavy. There is so much to be learned from these people…so much about their past, the present, and what we can do together in the future, that any opportunity cannot be overlooked. I would give anything to have those we lost back -even just briefly- so I can finally be taught the truth.
Blessings to you Russell and strength to Pesrl.
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
Dear Family and Friends,
May the day soon come when you will be so preoccupied with the blessings of Our Father that you won't recall the sorrow and grief of today. (Ecclesiastes 5:50, paraphrased)
Sincerest condolences,
Russell Means has moved on... long live Russell Means... fly free, brother...

I'm so sorry about what happen to Mr Means
I remember Russell from Cleveland. During the 70's we wanted great changes that did not happen. I've since learned that there is a purpose to our existance and we will see him again. Our Creator did not create mankind for nothing to live a little while and then die. So I look forward to seeing him again. BiBle book of John 17:3 and Psalms 37:10,11 and 29, helps us to see this just to name a few scriptures.
a great man ,he will never know how many people you helped, you will be missed, and you will be loved forever good bye my friend sympathy to your family and friends peace be with you, you will always be remember.you are now at peace with the elders.

Russell, Life has given you great strength. You have always faced the storms of life. You have always stood up in the storm and you have always faced the wind, the cold and the darkness. In the middle of a storm, you stood firm for your family, your friends, yourself and The Lakota People..
You have been a Great Warrior on your Earth Walk.
You have crossed over the rainbow bridge in beauty and Wankantanka has his son back in his arms.

Russel Means was like my mentor. I listened and learned.
Rest in Peace Great Warrior...Your Great Spirit Will FOREVER live on.
I had an immense respect for Mr. Means. He was a strong advocate for his people. His life as lived was an example for all of us. I am from Minnesota so have followed the native peoples for decades. This world will miss his wisdom and advocacy. Travel lightly.

Though I'm 5th generation Texan of Mexican American descent, I also proudly claim my mixed Native American roots of Lipan-Apache, Tonkawa & Couhuahuitecan and I will gravely miss the wisdom and courage that my brother, Russell Means was known for, especially in the times we live now where leaders like him are few and far between. May he be at peace with the Great Spirit?
Dear Theo, Michelle, and family:
I send my deepest sympathy to you and your family. It is hard to lose someone so close, and so loved. I pray that you will find peace in knowing that he will still be near, and that others truly care for you. I will keep you all in my prayers.

I'm sending prayers to the family, I was fortunate to meet Russel Means back in 1985 here in Tulalip Washington. I use to work at a culinery school here at Tulalup and we were honored to prepare a big dinner for Russel and the other people that had traveled with him. I even bought one of the books about Leonard Peltier very interresting. Russel will be missed by all and may his spirit live on within the rest of us. You will now be soaring with all over the other great leaders up in the sky.

I smile when i think of Russell Means I grew up knowing him and loving him as a good friend My Mom made sure i knew about the indian ways and Russell was the one to teach it she said When i was in trouble Russell was always there for anyone who needed a friend or a helping hand The one thing i loved the most about Russell is I'm not Indian in anyway but he took my family in and treat me as if i was his own child and let my Mom and I stay with him and teach me the indian ways i guess because of Russell that's why i married into Native American Thank you my friend you will be missed

Bill and Ali Taylor
My thoughts & prayers are with the Means family during this great loss. During the early 70's I attended the Yellow Thunder Rally's held at the Billy Mills gym, back in the day. I have the most respect for Mr. Means for bringing the issues and plight of our people to the front burner on both the local, national & international levels. He definitely paved the way for other native leaders voices to be heard on a larger scale. Rest in peace on a job well done....You will be missed.
Prayers to the family, I smile when thinking about Russ, it is because of him that we can not pray and stand up for our rights as Lakotas. lililili
Peace to your spirit and understanding to your Loved Ones.
In time, I'll me you at the Great Pow-wow.
A controversial figure indeed but one who was loved and will be missed.(Romans 14:4) . . .Who are you to judge the house servant of another?. . .
(Romans 14:8, 9) . . .if we live and if we die, we belong to our Creator.. For to this end Christ died and came to life again, that he might be Lord over both the dead and the living. . .
What an inspiration to the Native American Indian. Rest in peace, your spirit will live on.

An Old Indian Prayer
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am there,I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow
.I am the Sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain
.When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight
.I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
.I am not there: I did not Die
may your Spirit be at One Now with the Great Spirit and may you be at peace now, knowing in your heart you have inspired many to listen to your Wisdom, hugs

We spoke about your book, you enlightened me to a world that I always felt part of, but knew little of. I will never forget that day, and the passion you sparked in me to continue to learn, grow, and seek the truths. It may have been no more than 10 minutes of interaction, but they were the most profound. Now you will be amongst the stars with our ancestors. Thank you Russell! You will forever be remembered. Prayers for your wife and family. May your spirit continue to guide us.

In teh words of the great chief Crazy Horse "Hokahey, today is a good day to die!" Russell you will be missed but enver forgotten.
