We are so saddened to hear of Dr. PAT'S Sudden passing. He has been my dentist for over 30 years and was my kids dentist. We also had the pleasure of knowing his family from our parish St.Alphonsus. To Jon, Pat’s wife, his kids, and the rest of the O’Brien family, I want to express my deepest sympathy. Pat was such an upbeat inspiration to everyone he met. He overcame challenges such as his run in with the school bus, and bounded back. He was a dentist all his patients loved and trusted. Even after moving out of the area, patients like me would drive back to Grand Rapids because we knew Pat and the entire O’Brien team would take good care of us. I have fond memories of Pat singing songs while he worked or talking about the latest CD of Christmas music he had acquired. He loved to share his about his children and their latest adventure, especially when he was soon to be heading west to join one of them. He will be missed. My prayers are for your family and the O’Brien Dentistry team.

Just now opening the letter giving my husband and I the sad news about Pat. Jim and I hugged each other as we both loved Pat. He was a friend first, dentist second. I am warmed by the fact that he was hiking with Andy and doing what he loved best - engaging with nature. Our sympathies go to the wonderful O'Brien family.

We are so sorry for your loss. I will greatly miss Dr. Pat as my dentist. I am 34 and have gone to him since I was 5 - even after I got married and moved out of state. I schedule my dentist appts when visiting my family back in MI, and now bring my children there also. My first memory of him is getting one of my teeth pulled when I was in kindergarten - after that I was never afraid of getting a shot in my mouth from him because he jiggled the needle in so that it didn't hurt - and that was before numbing gel. :) We will pray for him and for your family.

Know that these days have been tinged with sadness for us as well upon hearing and reading of Pat's death. Great people should not pass away from our sight so quickly. This is the hardest note I have ever written in a guest book.

I accidentally found Pat as a dentist some 25 plus years ago. He became our friend.

Pat was amazing. He went to extraordinary means to help find a surgeon for my handicapped daughter, he never forgot her when she moved. He always had a smile, even on bad days. There were no complaints even after all that he went through after his bus accident.

My heart goes out to the entire O'Brien family. My sympathies to all of you that worked with him and loved him as a friend. We share your loss and feel privileged to have known him.

Dr. Pat has been my dentist since I married my husband. He is the best dentist I have had in my lifetime. Always thorough, courteous, witty, humming to the music above his head as he asked about problems, changes, or felt around in my mouth for anything unusual.
I have told this story a jillion times:
Mike and I had our semiannual checkup about a month after our daughter was born. We brought her into the room in her carseat..she slept as we got our checkups. Dr. Pat looked down to her, and said,"You know, I have often wondered what it would be like to make a mold and make a set of teeth and put them in a new baby's mouth." That was my first visit almost 21 years ago.
I will miss him alot. I can't imagine finding anyone nearly as good. He was an extraordinary person, and I will always remember him.
My thoughts and prayers go out for each and every one of you as you go through this unbelievably painful time.
Thank you, Pat for all you did for us.

To Nancy and the O'Brien Family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Our memories of Pat are not as a dentist, but as our beach neighbor and friend.

- Pat swimming in the Big Lake - no matter how cold the water was!
- Trying to cut up that huge tree that had washed up on the beach and ruining his chainsaw... twice, we believe.
- Playing "fetch" with Rossi and Mabel for hours.

Most of all, we will remember how Pat was with his family and those of us lucky enough to be friends, always warm and welcoming with a smile for all he came in contact with. He will truly be missed in the Valley.

God Bless;

Erin, Jon and Family, We are thinking of you and your family as this was so sudden and difficult to hear. May God's path lead you all to a better understanding of Patrick's death and to embrace the comfort you will receive from family and friends at this time. God Bless and our prayers are with you today and the days to come. Special hugs to your parents Erin, since there is no greater loss then ones child. Peace be with you today and always. We offer our prayers to the O'Brien family. How sad for all who knew him to lose such a great man so early in his life. Pat meant so much to our family and we will miss him very much.

Dear Andy and family - I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I will always remember him as being very kind and gentle. He put me at ease everytime I sat in that dentist chair. I know he will be greatly missed. My prayers will be with you and your family during this very difficult time.

Having known the family for 45 plus years I want to extend my deepest regrets and sympathy to the entire family. Knowing Nancy from GRCC, I extend my prayers and condolences on the loss of your "true companion" and love.
My thoughts also go out to his children, siblings and their families.
Growing up on the far West-side of GR, Dr. and Mrs. Robert O'Brien's home and cottage was always the safe haven and respite for any of their children's friends. I want them to know that there is never a time ( when I am back in town) that I drive past their home to this day, and I don't think about their kindness and genuine concern for all. Please know Dr. Bob and Ginny that you are in my thoughts during this time of extreme grief.

My deepest sympathy to the O'Brien Families and Ken and Lori and family. I was a patient of the O'Brien dentistry many, many years ago. In the last 13 years I have been close friends with the Zosts and have come to know Lori's extended family. I always feel welcomed by their kindness and share the Catholic faith. I will pray for comfort for all Pat's family during this difficult time. I hope you can find comfort in the many wonderful memories you hold.

I was fortunate to have been Pat's friend for many years and shared many special moments with Pat and his family. My prayers go out to all of his family and friends. And though I will miss his kind and caring way, his spirit will always remain with me. Dr. Rick Baker (Clarkston, MI)

I'm so sorry to hear of Pat's passing. I worked for Jon in the office shortly after they both graduated from dental school and I'll always remember him as so happy and caring. All his patients loved him. I think he must have gotten the humming gene from his dad, hmm? May God bless you all and may you know His peace.

Looking for the right words to express the sorrow that Vanessa and I feel and the hurt we felt when we received the news of Pat's passing. To find such words to help ease the pain of losing such a special man, no I can not. Your pain cannot be eased by words, but know you are in our prayers and that we ask God to be with all of you at this time and as you work to heal in time. We have been under the care of the O'Brien's for over 25 years and the joy of the smiles and fellowship we felt from everyone made the visit more like a trip to see family than the dentist. We will miss Pat's always smiling face and his ability to put us at easy during our visits. Please accept our deepest and heart felt sympathy for your loss. God bless you all. Rest in peace my friend, you will be missed

Dear O'Brien Family,
I was shocked and saddened when I heard the news of Dr. Pat's death during mass at St. Alphonsus. My most heartfelt sympathy goes out to you. I will be praying for the Lord to guide you and to give you strength and courage as you face the difficult days ahead. My you find comfort in the refrain to the song "You Are Mine," when Jesus says..."do not be afraid I am with you. I have called you each by name. Come and follow me, I will bring you home. I love you and you are mine."
