3 With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

Our thoughts are with the family. My mother's best friend through childhood was Doc's neice Gail. I grew up listening to Doc played in our house, have played his music for my daughters and still have my favorites on my ipod today. My parents favorite memory was sitting in your family home when they were young newlyweds and listening to Doc and Merle play. We visited once when I was 12 and I can still remember the view of our beautiful country. You will be missed.

Our prayers goes out to this precious family. My grandmother, winnie greene young and his mother were sisters. I wish we could have met him.

Many times Doc's music took me down to the valley to pray, it aloud me to cry then picked me up and pointed me in the right direction. We have his music, Heaven has a new star. Have a great journey Doc; greet Merle for us, until we meet again.
June 05, 2012
The weight of Doc's passing is hard to bear ;but at the same time thought of his presence thru his music will ring like church bells on the mountain top!
June 05, 2012
I first heard of Doc in 1962. I was 24, now I'm 74. While in college I picked up the guitar & I was immediately attracted. My own dad had been a country player in the twenties. I first saw him at the old Second-Fret club in Philadelphia in 1964. He entered the stage from the floor above by an old narrow cast iron spiral staircase.Using one hand on the rail & the other with his guitar. It was love at first site. I saw him several times at the old Main-Point coffee house in suburban Philly. I could have reached out and touched him. I will miss him dearly. I was driving in my car while listening to him singing "Your lone Journey Home" I wept. He was a great man. So humble, so humble! Thanks Doc for 50 years.

June 4, 2012
My heart and prayers go to Rosa Lee and family at the time of Doc's homegoing.
I remember meeting Doc and Merle in Stillwater, OK at a Bluegrass & Old Time Music Festival in 1972. It was before I was honorably discharged from the US Air Force in Altus, OK. An officer friend of mine and I stayed in the home of a professor and his family and had the opportunity to meet Doc and Merle and other musicians.
As a Born-Again Christian, Doc's walk with the Lord Jesus was a blessing for me. I wrote to him years ago after the release of his album, On Praying Ground, that is still one of my favorite recordings.
While I cannot flat pick as accurately and decisively as Doc and Merle did, I still play my vintage Martins and a Bourgois guitar; I'm more confortable using finger-picking.
Know that your Doc was a very special man, a solid Christian, and incredible folk/bluegrass/country guitarist and singer. His life reflected the in-dwelling presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ. He's dancing with the angels and saints in glory. My late wife, Maxine, who passed in 12/08 is there also. She played guitar, autoharp and Mt.Dulcimer.
Love always in Jesus to you all,

Dr. Joe DeLong

Thanks Doc for being who you were, a great man then a great musician.
June 01, 2012
Many years ago, back when dreams and aspirations vastly outnumbered memories and accomplishments, some friends and I attended the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
The Saturday evening concert was underway. We sat on the gently sloping hill that provided a view of the main stage, listening to the musical miscellany with rapturous delight.
The evening's host thanked the group that had just finished their three song set prior to announcing the next performer. “Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Doc Watson.” A resounding roar arose from the audience.
Doc was lead to a chair in front of a microphone, spoke softly about what a pleasure it was to be there and then broke into his rendition of “Black Mountain Rag.”
When he finished his set, which went by much too quickly, the crowd showed its appreciation with thunderous applause. The gentle, humble man from the backwoods of North Carolina responded. “I wanna thank you about a thousand bushels.” It was a beautiful moment.
Now Doc is gone. Tears fill my eyes. Tears of love and gratitude for a man who gave us so much joy and happiness. Doc, I just want to say to you – “Thank you about a thousand bushels.” Rest in peace, my friend.

I am sure I will spend many more listening and learning and will always cherish the opportiunity I had to hear him and to be influenced by him. Thanks Doc for your gift.

May 31, 2012
I missed Doc the first time around in the '60's, but 'discovered' him in the late 1980's when listening to a compilation CD that had Doc doing a jaw-dropping bluesy version of "Sittin' On Top Of The World". Almost 30 years later, I have over 35 of his CD's, (more than any other artist in my collection, apart from Dylan) and trekked from Toronto to see him perform live, twice. Once in Burlington, VT, and a few years later in upstate New York. What a joy to listen to Doc play and sing. He's been a big, big part of everything that's good about America. The world's a sadder place without him.
May 31, 2012
I saw "Doc" in Alabama at Horse Pens 40 with his son Merle back about 1975 or so I think it was. He really impressed me with his talent and he "got on" Merle to stop playing around so everyone could get "tuned up". He told him to "Hush" in front of about 5000 people I think it was. He was the greatest. If I had had the talent to play like someone it would be "Doc" Watson. Johnny Arant, Sylacauga, Al
May 31, 2012
Doc,

You will be missed! I had the pleasure of listening and seeing you several times since the 70's. As a former North Carolinian you stand out as a true NC treasure. I can hear the Gods and Goddesses tapping their toes as you play your beautiful old-time music.
May 31, 2012
I had the great fortune to attend several Doc Watson concerts over the years, including attending a Merlefest. The last timw I saw him, I took my mom who was about 75 at the time. She cried during parts of the concert because the music reminded her of her own father who played the "old" tunes. Being able to share that concert with my mom was a special time for both of us. My prayers are with the family. Thanks for sharing him with the rest of us!!

My best memory of Doc was at MerleFest this year. I was in the backstage parking lot and Doc was being helped out of a golf cart. I had the camera rolling and listened to a llittle of the conversation he was having with another musician. As he walked by me I said "love you Doc". He ambled on a few steps and then very sweetly turned his head toward me and said "love you too". That says it all - the man, the music, the legend, the love!
May 31, 2012

May 31, 2012
RIP Doc. You were one of the finest musicians ever.
May 31, 2012
One of our national treasures may be gone from this plane, but will never be forgotten , as his legacy will carry on through his extended family, close friends who played with him over the years. I am very proud he hailed from my home state of North Carolina. Heaven has Doc and Merle , together again and I am sure the angels are joining the music. Condolences to his biological and extended family. R.I.P. Doc, you will definitely be missed.
May 31, 2012
Doc's music has always amazed me. He will always be one of the best guitar players of any genre; and he was such an inspiration. I know that he is with The Lord now, and enjoying his reward for being such a devoted Christian. I want to tell his family that while your pain is great, rejoice in knowing he was loved by more people than you can imagine. I know he is teaming up with some angels, picking and singing while Heaven rejoices!

It's people like Doc who teach us all about humility. I was 19. Doc and Merle with Vassar opening in a theater in PA; blew my mind, and my heart, and I was never the same. Much love to your spirit as you paint those notes across the sky.
May 30, 2012
My condolences to the Watson family. Doc's music touches my heart like no other.

May 30, 2012
Doc Watson is a true American treasure. We all have suffered a loss with his passing. He was such a great musician, yet a humble and generous man. It will be a long time before we see his like again.
May 30, 2012
Our prayers go out to Doc's family. He was a unique individual and an inspiration to his flat picking fans. I do not weep for him for Doc is playing in a far better circle of players, Merle, Earl, Douglas, and a host of other players gone on before. We will miss him, we are grateful to have lived when he was sharing his songs. RIP - Doc.
May 30, 2012
Condolences to the family of the beloved Doc Watson. Thanks for the great music, Doc Watson may you RIP. I know the "horns of heaven" are blowing to let you into the Eternal place.
May 30, 2012
The first time I saw Doc play was with Merle on a very cold and rainy night, Greenville, SC. Later on that evening, he and Merle jammed with Earl Scruggs, John Hartford, and the Dillards. Since Merle's death, I've seen him a half-dozen times more. BUT nothing meant more than to sit and talk with Doc, just me and him, in a dressing room at the Newberry Opera House, January 2011. We didn't talk at all about music, but of family, faith, and his precious "clock" (the Braille Watch he'd had since 1968.) As great of a musician that he was, the true Treasure of this man was the stories he shared from his heart. We'll miss him BUT REJOICE that he has received his reward for a good life. As he told me and another person present..."When I get to heaven, the first thing I'll see is my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ...Then, I'll see Merle".

"I was blind, BUT now I see"
Hallelujah!!!
May 30, 2012
I have never forgotten it. Doc Watson, Merlefest 2001, sitting alone on that big stage, singing Nights in White Satin. I'd never heard that song before - in all the times I've heard it - I never really heard it until that evening. He sang it under the rising crescent of a moon that April. He dedicated the song to his son, Merle. Doc said Merle used to love that song and Doc would listen to him listening to the Moody Blues sing it. Only later, after his son had died, did he really hear it himself and realize the sadness, the tenderness, the hope and the hopelessness in it. And when Doc sang it that night, I'd never heard anything so beautiful. As he gently howled at the sky, face upturned, blind eyes in a permanent squint, I knew something special was happening. There was, in that song that night, a direct communication between human beings - a moment of unmediated renderings of multiple hearts. Doc was able to do that.
May 30, 2012
From the time I was 10 years old, I remember hearing Doc Watson for the first time. From that day forward he left a musical path that I'm still on. Doc Watson is the reason I do what I do. I will always remember him, respect and love what he stood for. Humility, quality, musicianship and rare talent. RIP Arthel Doc Watson. I will always love you.

Rest In Peace Doc. My wife and I are long time fans. Our favorite performing artist. First heard you lots of years ago when I was a ''rock''enthusiast. ''Deep River Blues" was my first Doc Song and my favorite. I wasn't supposed to like this music, but I did!! You have given us a lot of listening pleasure. We have ''turned on'' many a person to your music, and they too have become fans. You are gone physically, but you have left your mark, and will live on for a long time.

A perfect mix of earnestness and mind-blowing virtuosity. Our culture is a much, much smaller place with Doc Watson's absence, but a much, much richer place for his contributions. May he rest in peace and pick in Heaven with Merle.
May 30, 2012
Wishing you well on your "Long Journey" Doc. I am sure you and Merle are sitting just inside the Pearly Gates picking one as I type this. Merlefest will now have two patron saints to honor. We miss you already.

Thanks for following your heart, Doc, and lifting many people's spirits along the way! I was lucky enough to see Doc and Merle perform a couple of times. Doc was a great one. RIP.
May 30, 2012
...and there never was a guitar-player like Doc Watson!! I was just learning the guitar when I heard Doc at WFU in Waite Chapel. It changed my attitude toward (my) guitar forever in one easy guitar concert, that 40 years later, remains unforgettable. His ability to be "in the moment" was awesome--and you presently forgot for a time everything else that was troublesome in your life. Certainly he was that rare "legend in his own time". JD Wilson, Auburn, IL
May 30, 2012

I saw Doc perform twice. He was always a gentleman, and an inspiration to celebrities and to the common man equally. He personified Phil 2:3, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conciet, but in humility consider others better than yourself."

My condolences to the Watson Family.
I have enjoyed seeing him at Merlefest since my first one in '97. Doc is truly an American Treasure.

The world won't see the likes of Doc Watson again. God blessed Doc with an incredible and unique talent and Doc made the most of his gift. Through all the acclaim and honor that Doc Watson received in his life, he was able to maintain a very distinct humility. Real talent, real music, and real humility are sadly in short supply. Doc Watson had it all.
May 30, 2012

Another great country star has left the building. God bless you Doc. You will be missed.

I shook his hand, I told him about the first time I heard his music at the Milan Public Library in 1968: he listened to me and repeated every word I said a few minutes later on stage and dedicated a song to me. That was Doc.

Doc we love you! Keep playing.

To the the family of Doc Watson - May God give you peace and comfort through his word and the Lord Jesus Christ during this time of sorrow, I know that he will be missed by many.

My condolences to the Watson Family. Doc's playing inspired many people to take up flatpicked guitar; his recordings will inspire many more generations to come. His picking was revolutionary. I am grateful to have seen him play.

Harry Chapin once wrote

"Remember when the music
Came from wooden boxes strung with silver wire

And as we sang the words, it would set our minds on fire..."

Harry must have been thinking of you, Doc! Thank you for all the joy, and thank you, especially, for not retiring in '88!

May you rest in peace, now that you're back picking with Merle, again.

My condolences to the Watson family. Doc Watson will be dearly missed as he was loved by his family, friends and fans. I'm a huge fan of Doc Watson and I love the old music which in my book is the best music! He's the best guitar flat picker ever and always will be! His singing was very powerful and had those 'Ancient Tones' as Mr. Bill Monroe would say. Thank you Mr. Doc Watson for everything you gave us and for giving us everything you had. We love you and miss you.

First learned about Doc when the "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" albums started. Made a trip to the Ryman last summer to see him live, not knowing if I'd ever have another chance. Sad to know he's gone but so glad he shared his wonderful talent with all of us.

I'm at a loss as to what to say except we...all of us who loved exceptional music and talent feel blessed we were able to hear Doc and his music. I loved his impeccable playing and that wonderful lyrical, honest voice of his. I loved "I Am a Pilgrim" and learned to sing it from listening to Doc over and over. Doc...you're a Pilgrim no longer. You've "bathed your weary soul in that River of Jordan". Rest well Doc.

Doc God bless you on your new journey. As the old song goes, " I was blind but now I see", God bless this family. Merle, welcome Daddy home with our Lord Jesus by your side. Your memory and legacy will live forever Doc, just a simple man with a God given talent. I love you Doc Watson. My pastor always says our lives are streams flowing into the same river towards whatever heaven lies in the mist beyond the falls. Find the joy in your life, my dear friends, close your eyes and let the waters take you home.

I learned of Doc Watson when he was interviewed by Hugh Downs on the Today show, years ago. I was very impressed by his modesty; the real kind. And when I heard him play, I was a convert to bluegrass.

He made the world a better place.
