Growing up without cousins, aunts, uncles, or grandparents of my own, I would have missed out on a lot if it hadn't been for Aunt Loy. Though she was actually my great aunt, it always felt more like she was a kind of grandmother to me, and it often doesn't occur to me that my second cousins aren't my cousins. The kindness and generosity that she always extended so naturally has become an important part of what family means to me. I will always remember fondly her stories about family and neighborhoods, her love of reading and history, her flamboyant pronouncements, her sense of class and simplicity, and the warmth of her home during the holidays that was a mainstay of my childhood. Here's to you, Aunt Loy.

Kindest and most welcoming presence on Sayre avenue. Her door was always open. I have warm memories of Dolores.
