Kim--- I just learned of Dewitt's passing. We went through the same doctoral program at Tennessee. We connected a few times since then for golf, and meals when he was in Chicago on business. He arranged for me to get tickets to a ND football game for my son and I, which was a real treat. I really appreciated him being a friend, a straight shooter, and someone who was open-handed--- not closed fisted. You and the kids are in our prayers.

I was thinking of nominating Dewitt for an award at Clemson just this afternoon, and started looking for him on the web. I was chocked to read of his passing. He had worked with me at Clemson, wanted to do a PhD with me, and was in charge of computer and network services. He was a good friend, and unfortunately, we lost contact when he left. My condolences to the family, I know he is missed. I shared the information with my colleagues who knew him. So you may hear from some of them.

Dear Mrs. Latimer and children,

I am a student at Montana State University and, although I never officially met your husband and father, I knew him. When I saw his picture on my television screen, I couldn't help but smile – until I heard the story and was hit by waves of sorrow.

On a somewhat irregular basis as I walked across the campus, I would pass Dewitt and, without fail, he always smiled and offered a friendly word. I know, especially to you, that this may not seem like a big deal but, although I'm sure Montanans might disagree, as compared to people from the south (I grew up in Texas), folks here routinely walk by with their heads down and without acknowledging one another. I looked forward to seeing Dewitt who, in contrast, had his head up and a smile ready to share. Although we didn't even know each other's names, I knew he was a happy person, someone who liked to connect with people, and someone I wished others would emulate. One sunny day, he asked me “how are you” and I made some comment that “it's a sunny day so I'm happy!” From that moment, every time we passed one another in sunshine, he would make a gesture toward the sky and say something about it being a “happy day!” It made a difference in my life – that he not only recognized me but remembered something (frivolous as it may be) important to me.

The sunny days will never be quite as bright – I will miss him.

I realize that there aren't words I can share with you to ease the pain you are enduring. However, I wanted you to know that a complete stranger, touched by the kindness of your husband and father, cares and wishes I could take the hurt away.

Kim, I remember living next to you and Dewitt 8 years ago. I was always impressed with what a solid family you were and what a loving Dad Dewitt was. He was the type of guy to help me shovel my driveway with a foot of snow on the ground becasue my husband was out of town. Both of you were always very thoughtful people. I am very sorry for your loss and wish you and the childred the best during this most difficult time.

I met Dewitt less than a year ago and we struck up a good relationship right away. I'm thankful for the opportunity I had to know him and the time we shared together. I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with him on a presentation in April 2013 with 3 other colleagues which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'll miss being able to discuss topics and getting Dewitt's view.
For Kim and Dewitt's children...I'm so saddened for your loss. Know that your husband and father was a great and respected person. Our thoughts and prayers are with you today and forever more.

God Bless you!

To Kevin and the Latimer Family,
I didn't know Dewitt personally, but I wanted to express my sincere condolences to all of you at this time. I got to know Kevin a little bit as a student in my English 10 class, and I found him to be one of the most respectful, brightest, thoughtful, and kindest young men I have had the privilege to meet. Though I did not know Kevin's father, I believe the apple never falls far from the tree, and have no doubt that Dewitt was a wonderful husband, father and equally extraordinary man as well. Kevin, you and your family are in my thoughts, and wish you all the strength you will need to endure.

Kim and Family, I only bumped into you when I would come over to have Dewitt help me on another IT issue, but I had to share a few stories with you.

One, a very generous man. He has given me more time to help me and while I have paid him from time to time for his help it probably works out to about $5 an hour. He always spoken glowingly of his family and I really respected him for that and tried to emulate it over the last few years I have known him and as I remember him going forward.

I have many memories, but I'll leave you with this one. I dropped my laptop off back in January to have a new operating system put on it as the laptop had crashed. I stopped by to pick it up after Dewitt had taken off back to Montana and I fired up the laptop to logon.......he has put a kitty kat as my logon page picture. I laughed so hard and sent him a note and his response was "I thought it was so you!". I laughed and still laugh about it and the kitty kat is still there. He knew I could never figure out how to take it off.

I'm very sorry for your loss. A great person that I was fortunate enough to get to know in the past few years.
