Jr/Sr Prom,1960,I gave my boyfriend's ring back, which left me with a new dress but no date! My mother was not happy. But there was a new senior boy in the halls of BHS. He was tall, handsome and had a smile that could melt ice cream in the Arctic! He'd make the perfect date.
Word got around quickly that I'd like him to ask me to prom. I was on "pins and needles" wondering if I would get to go to prom. To my disbelief, the call came. Lee asked me to prom! It was awkward, to have prom night as a first date, however, I found Lee to be a delightful person! We chatted and danced, with my "X" looking on from the sidelines. Embarrassing? It could have been, but Lee made me feel comfortable.
We never dated after that night. I think it's because the love of Lee's life lived in Algona, Ia. Her name was Sherry. I can't help but thinking that Sherry knew Lee would remain true to her. I made up with my boyfriend and life went on.
I heard later that Lee and Sherry married. I'm sure that was how it was meant to be, however, I could never thank Lee enough for rescuing me that one night.
The next time I heard Lee's name was in an email from Sandra Crandall in 2012. It alerted all of Lee's BHS classmates that he had been taken seriously ill. I felt a need to reconnect one last time with Lee so I sent him a copy of my favoite book, Live Your Dash, by Linda Ellis. It's a book about making every moment in your life - the dash in the years between when you are born and when you die, count. It inspires you to live your life with all you've got... to appreciate the blessings and the time you've been given. She moves you to do everything possible to make your time on earth other words... to live your dash.
In response, Lee wrote a beautiful thank you note in which he said, "I'm going to beat this. The book made my day." I felt good inside because Lee had "made my day" at the prom back in 1960. Thanks again, Lee.

Dear Sherry and Family,

I was so sorry to hear about Lee. He fought a difficult battle and was very courageous throughout. May God's great love and many wonderful memories give you comfort in the times ahead. As many have said, he was such a gentleman--even in high school when all guys aren't as kind and thoughtful! May God bless and comfort you.
Love and prayers,

Lee was a gentleman, perhaps from birth. He was also kind and generous to those less fortunate. I share an Iowa childhood with Lee and have always admired his faith, work ethic and, lately, his courage in battling cancer. Deepest sympathies to Sherry and their family. May he rest in peace.
