I played against Alec in the NBA back in the 90's. I was with the Hornets when he was with the Heat. We never spoke, never knew him, but I had heard some years later that he was born in Minnesota (where I'm from) And someone had told me that he lived in Bloomington, MN as a young kid. Wondering if thats true?? I went to Bloomington Jefferson High School and apparently that's where he would have gone had he stayed. Again, is that true? If it is, I would have liked to have played with him all those years ago. We would have been friends. I was so sorry to hear that he had passed away. My thoughts/prayers to his family. A former NBA player becomes a doctor - Impressive. Wish I would have known you.

To the family, I express condolences. Now Alec has the opportunity to be chosen as one of those "meek" ones who the Lord , at Matt 5:5, says will someday inherit the earth. Respectfully yours, GH

March 16, 2010
Dear Mr. Kessler's family, please accept my warmest sympathies and be comforted knowing Almighty God is "near to those that are broken at heart and those who are crushed in spirit he saves" (Psalm 34:18). He can give us power beyond what is normal to go on from one day to the next (2 Corin. 4:7)
March 01, 2010
Dear Rhea, I don't know if you remember me but I met you and Alec at UGA. I was so saddened when I heard the news of Alec. He was such a nice, down to earth person and you were a wonderful friend and person. My heart goes out to you and your families. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am a health care worker at Gulf breeze Hodpital and had many opertunities to work with Dr. Kessler and never failed to be amazed by his kindness to everyone never allowing anyone to feel less than equal. We miss him both professionally and personnally.
He will remain in our prayers forever.

The years may come and go. But the memories of our love ones will always live in our hearts.

Psalms 147:3- He is healing the broken-hearted ones. And binding up their painful spots
November 02, 2009
I am a Seattle NBA fan. I was 17 when Dr. Kessler was drafted. Being a taller guy in my Japanese-American church leagues, I patterened my games after Alec's, with his perimeter shooting. In Seattle, we have lost our NBA team, but that does not compare to the loss Alec's family and friends have endured. I plan to buy a custom-made Miami 33 Kessler jersey for enjoyment, as he was a hard worker and great person.
November 02, 2009
I did not know Alec or Rhea, but I sat next to them one sunday morning at a bagel place in Aventura Florida. Being a former college player and an avid fan I started a conversation with him. While it was only a short exchange, I was always impressed by his humility and charm he displayed that day. They were so engaging and nice. I still remember them to this day. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Kessler family and I am sure his children will grow up to be wonderful people as well.
July 16, 2009
I didn't know Alec, but recently met Rhea and in getting to know her it is so apparent her love for him is alive and well. His spirit lives on in her heart and in the love they shared with their sons. I can tell, through Rhea's expression, that he was an amazing man and an inspiration to many.
May 05, 2009
I had no idea. I've got several of his cards & I was always trying to steal his jerseys when I worked the Chicago Bulls-Miami Heat games. I'm very sorry to hear the news.
April 28, 2009
Wow - I am so out of touch....just now hearing the news about Alec. I had many classes with Alec during those pre-med years at UGA. I was always amazed at how Alec could juggle the pressures of Div 1 athletics - and still be the smartest kid in the class. And - even more - to do it with humility...he was one-of-a-kind...and I am truly blessed to have known him and to be inspired by him.
April 06, 2009
I was Alec's very good friend in elementary school. We live together in West Bloomfield Michigan and I was so sorry to see him move away. I remember being a basketball, and baseball team mate of his way back in the day when he had those crazy stainless steel braces on his teeth. I am pleased to hear that he followed his dream to become a doctor. The last time I saw him he was assigned to play defense against Michael Jordan (tough job) and I think of him often as do some of his other elementary schoolmates. Condolances.
March 30, 2009
big man, angie and i miss you every day
March 29, 2009
I went to Roswell High School with Alec and was a cheerleader when he played basketball. I can't believe how quickly time goes by. I remember that he was always in a good mood in high school which was very hard to do. It is wonderful that he became a doctor. I wish I had seen him play basketball as an adult. I am very sorry that he is in heaven. Follow his positive, peaceful example...Amy A.

I was so saddened to hear of your loss. Dr Kessler was a great surgeon with great talent an great bedside manner with his patience. I was blessed to be one of his patience.
December 24, 2007
Every mother of young children wish that the friends next door were "exemplary" as far as pals go. When Alec and Chad lived by us, they were about 8 and 10 and they were the best. We would often ask them to join us for lunch. Alec would say his mom was probably calling him, but Chad would already be at the table. A prettier little boy than Alec I cannot remember and when the boys would climb a tree, Alec was right there. The pain I feel from Alec's loss will never really leave me nor from my son Kelly's memories of him. Ginger was my best friend then and I miss her greatly. My love and prayers go out to Jay and Ginger and all of Alec's loving family.

Almost 2 months later I am at a loss for words still. I think of you often, and Rhea & the boys weigh heavy on my heart. I can only hope that everyone knows what Dr. Kessler truely meant to me. The Dr. Kessler I worked for - for almost 2 years, was a a true friend and mentor. I thank God upon every remembrance of you.
November 13, 2007
Alec was my senior prom date, but I'll remember him most from watching all the basketball games. He was a leader to the team, well respected and liked by the whole school. My thoughts and prayers are with his parents, Rhea and the boys.
November 08, 2007
Dear Kessler family,
We were saddened to learn of your loss. May God bless you during this time of sorrow.
November 06, 2007
Our family was so sad to hear about Dr. Kessler. That Saturday, kids in town were calling each other on their cellphones to see if it were really true, hoping it was not.
My daughter had needed emergency surgery for two broken bones last year that were broken during tumbling, and she was very scared and upset. When he spoke to her, I could tell that he was a daddy; she calmed right down. And when he spoke to me about the options, he was so knowledgeable and patient, and he suggested what he would do if it were his child. He didn't rush to get the surgery over with on an on-call Saturday, but waited several hours to be safe since she had eaten breakfast. We knew he cared. All these things made a bad situation so much better, and we were blessed to have had him as our surgeon. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
November 04, 2007
I am a RN that had worked with Dr Kessler a short time. I was in report at work when we were told of his death. We all were shocked and saddened by the news. The phrase "He was just here a few hours ago" was repeated many times. He was kind and humble. My prayers and thoughts are with your family.
November 02, 2007
I only knew your husband for the last two years while I was a patient at Southern Orthopedics. In that short time I could really pick upon his person touch as he perform his gift. In that short time one could tell of his love for his family and his kindness to those he work with. To go into the office for a visit you could tell he and his staff were very friendly, more like family as they worked together. I will pray everyday for God strenth to help you and the boys through this time. It is surprizing how HE helps.
October 31, 2007
Dear Ms Kessler & family,
I was very saddened to hear of Dr. Kessler's death. I was a patient and the news of his death was a shock to me. I will keep you and all your family in my prayers and wish you profound sympathy.
October 27, 2007
Dear Mrs Kessler and family,
Like so many others my family knew Dr Alec Kessler as an exordinary surgeon. We first met him when we came seeking help for my mother's botched hip replacement and he was so gentle with her saying "if you were my grandmother I'd tell you to go for it (surgery)". He knew he could help her & I can see him looking down at my tiny, frail mother and her beaming up at him as if he were her hero, which he became when he succesfully replaced her hip prosthesis after 13 months of pain. We first came to him without any knowledge of him, but we left that first day filled with gratitude and hope. Next he became my father's doctor and once again he did not let us down. Dr. Kessler exemplified all that's good & ethical in the practice of medicine.
Although he stood head and shoulders above most people, he never looked down on anyone. May God be with you all as you heal.
October 27, 2007
I was told of Dr. Kessler's untimely death while waiting for a flight in Kennedy Airport. I was and continue to be devastated. Dr. Kessler was the only doctor I have had in Pensacola who listened to me when I was in pain and found a way to fix me so the pain is gone after years of suffering. I once told him I appreciated him taking the time to hear me and he told me that was part of his job, that he got into medicine to help people , not to make money. I never felt rushed by him. Besides being an exceptional physician, he was a truly good person. My prayers go out to his entire family and friends but especially to his wife and sons of whom he always spoke so highly.I will always miss him and will use him as a standard for what a true physician can and should be.
October 26, 2007
we sure do miss you at work.its just not the same
October 25, 2007
To the Kessler family - Keith and I were privileged to meet Alec and invite him to Pensacola. We remember fondly our wild ride with Rhea from Atlanta to Pensacola in a minivan and Alec driving like a NASCAR driver to make it in 4 hours after the Chicago AAOS meeting.

Alec and I did several difficult cases together. He was fun to operate with, and very talented in the OR.

He lived fast and fully. Truly it can be said he lived every day like it was his last.

My daughter, also a basketball player, but only 9, told me "Mom, in Jesus' basketball game against the devil, God's team needed a new center!" God bless the little children for bringing light to our lives.

Alec was a bright light, and we will see him in the heavens.

Our best, Dr. Juliet DeCampos and Keith Kundahl family
October 25, 2007
I'd like to extend my condolences to the entire Kessler family.
I knew of Dr. Kessler from working with him at Baptist. Dr. Kessler, with his many accomplishments, never let his fame as a basketball player or his achievement of becoming a gifted surgeon effect the way he treated each person he came into contact with daily. He always had a smile or friendly elevator conversation to share.
So many people were deeply touched by Dr. Kessler, he was truly a charming, southern gentleman and is already greatly missed throughout the halls of Baptist Hospital.
My thoughts and prayers remain with your family in this difficult time.
October 24, 2007
I just learned of Alec's death at a basketball luncheon today. Ironically, the only time we ever met was when we sat together at the 1990 CoSida Academic All American luncheon in Lexington, KY. I don't remember our discussion that day, but I do remember that my mother was a fan of his, and that when I got home, I told her that he was just as good a guy in person as he had seemed to be from afar. Even then, I was taken with his kind and generous spirit, and I am sorry that more people won't have the chance to learn of those gifts in the coming years.

May God bless all of your family during this time.
October 24, 2007
Dear Rhea, Christopher and Nicholas,

ON DAYS WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG
AND EVEN THOUGH
YOU HAVE NO HOPE
YOU STRUGGLE TO BE STRONG

WHEN SADNESS HAS YOUR SOUL
YOUR BODY MAY WEEP
AND NEVER SLEEP
DEPRESSION HAS IT'S HOLD

THIS LIFE IS FULL OF LONG HARD DAYS
THAT SEEM TO STEAL YOUR PEACE
YOU'RE PRESSING
FOR YOUR BLESSING
BUT YOU NEED TO FIND RELEASE

IT WON'T BE LONG
TIL YOU'LL BE STRONG
I KNOW SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU
HE WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED
HE'LL HOLD YOU
AND CONSOLE YOU
HE'LL MEET YOUR EVERY NEED

HE'LL STAY WITH YOU FOREVER
HE'LL HELP YOU KEEP YOUR WAY
AND CARRY YOU CONTRARY TO
YOUR HOPELESSNESS THIS DAY
October 22, 2007
Dear Kessler family,
I work at gulf breeze hospital and was there that tragic day. I will NEVER forget it. In fact, it's hard for me to go to the E.R. now. My heart truly breaks for you. I worked with Dr. Kessler only a few times, but he made them unforgetable with his kindness and humor. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers. May God comfort you and give you strength.

LIFE IS BUT A STOPPING PLACE,
A PAUSE IN WHAT'S MEANT TO BE,
A RESTING PLACE ALONG THE ROAD
TO SWEET ETERNITY.
WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT JOURNEYS,
DIFFERENT PATHS ALONG THE WAY,
WE ALL ARE MEANT TO LEARN SOME
THINGS, BUT NEVER MEANT
TO STAY.
OUR DESTINATION IS A PLACE FAR
GREATER THAN WE KNOW.
FOR SOME, THE JOURNEY'S QUICKER,
FOR SOME, THE JOURNEY'S SLOW.
AND WHEN THE JOURNEY FINALLY ENDS,
WE"LL CLAIM A GREAT REWARD
AND FIND AN EVERLASTING PEACE,
TOGETHER WITH THE LORD.

A good friend gave that to me when I needed it. I read it everyday.
October 21, 2007
Dear Kessler Family, I knew Alec from Roswell High School and my neighborhood I grew up in. He was the tall, skinny sweet kid in school. He was friends with my brother. God bless his wife, precious boys, brother and family. Take comfort in knowing that Alec is always with you!

October 19, 2007
Wednesday, 10.17.07 was the day none of us ever wanted to come.....In Gulf Breeze, Florida, hundreds of shocked, numb, broken hearted, & just plain devistated mourners gathered to celebrate the wonderful gift that was Dr. Alec Kessler. He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a respected & loved orthopaedic physician, & a friend. In his devistatingly brief 40 years on this earth, he accomplished so much more than most can even hope to. Today, we heard a hauntingly elegant eulogy from Alecs' older brother, Dr. Chad Kessler (it is truely tragic to have such an honor), a hysterical account of Alecs' life as a Georgia Bulldog, & finally, a eulogy from what I am sure will be the hardest thing Jay Kessler will ever have to do -how can a father sum up his baby boys life so that all that are listening will see what he is saying?

In Hawaiian culture, it is considered good luck to have rain on special occasions - it is a blessing of sorts. It rained today. My mother, a very wise woman (me, I got none of that!) said that every drop of rain today was a tear that someone had cried for Alec .

Alec lives on - he was an organ donor - his earthly life was tragically cut short, but he lives on in all those who will benefit from the gifts he continues to give even with his passing!

Please keep Rhea, Christopher, Nickolas, Debbie, Angie, & Teresa in your thoughts, your prayers, & your heart for they are suffering greatest from this tragedy.

Rhea is now part of an exclusive club that no one wants to belong to - as I belong as well - I will keep you in my heart always for you are now a sister.

My thoughts & prayers go out to all that loved Dr Kessler. He was a wonderful gift to us all & will forever be a part of our hearts. He will forever be part of our family at Southern Orthopaedics - just as Rhea, Christopher, & Nickolas will be!
October 19, 2007
I am truly blessed to have been at Baptist Hospital while Dr. Kessler was there. All of us in the Operating Room will miss him, miss his humor and kindness for a long time to come. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
October 19, 2007
Dear Rhea, Chris and Nick,
I came to know you all because of Scott and Alec's great friendship, but I have been so blessed by knowing you and being apart of the amazing love and care you have for others. Feeling a huge sense of gratitude for the time spent with Alec and you all, I wanted to say thank you.
Bless you,

October 19, 2007
Dear Kessler family,
What a thrill is was to watch Alec play basketball at UGA.His accomplishments both on and off the court were outstanding. He was a true scholar athlete. This world is a better place because Alex Kessler lived, served, and touched many lives during his walk on earth. May God's love, grace, and peace be yours as you grieve his loss.

October 19, 2007
Dear Rhea,

I am so sorry to hear about Alec. Even though we lost touch over the years, you, Alec, and your family have remained in my thoughts and I always hoped that we would get together again in the future.

As you know, I met Alec right after he moved to Miami and we became very close friends during his time in Florida. I'll never forget the boat trips to Bimini, going windsurfing in Key Biscayne, hanging out in your furniture store, the playful times with Bones and Houser, and the countless number of other great times that we had, many of which you were there with us every step of the way.

Without question, Alec was one of a kind and the world lost one of its finest people. He enriched and brought joy to the lives of so many people and I am most fortunate to have known such a first class person.
October 19, 2007
I went to medical school and residency with Alex - it makes me sad that such a great guy is no longer with us.
October 19, 2007

To Dr Kessler's family
As I read through the guest book, I see we all felt very fortunate to have Dr Kessler for our physician. He was so professional yet so kind and understanding. I knew he was listening to me when I talked with him about my health issues because of how he answered me, and how he helped me. He was the surgeon who helped my mother-in-law as well as several friends. He was good! What a great loss.
I can only imagine your heart ache.
I am so sorry for your loss.
We met on night at a local restaurant and he just shinned when he introduced all of you. (I am the lady who sent homemade bread home with him after my appts.)

You all are in my heart and prayers. May God comfort you now and in the days ahead. Lean on Him.

I only knew for a short time but he impressed me so much that when I needed Surgery I choose him. He was a gentle giant of a man with a compassionate nature and a ready smile that made you feel safe in his hands. He was admired at the hospital. I work at Baptist in tower 3 so I saw him in passing many times and I know that all who knew him will miss him.
October 18, 2007
This is too the entire Kessler family, I worked with Dr. Kessler in the OR at Baptist and anyone can tell you I am not the Ortho queen, but he never got upset with me. October 18, 2007
Rhea, Nicholas, Christopher, Glen & Rita - I was so sad to hear of Alec's sudden passing away Saturday. What an incredible human being he was! He excelled at so many aspects of his life - as a father, husband, physician, student, athlete - he always worked so hard and yet still found time to have fun and a good outlook on life and was always such a nice person. I was so sorry that I couldn't arrange to be off from work to be able to come to the memorial service. My thoughts and prayers have been with you since I heard the news. Such a tragic loss is just beyond words.
October 17, 2007
I am so sorry for your loss. I had just very recently started seeing Dr. Kessler for pain in my low back that my family Dr. no longer wanted to treat. Dr. Kessler told me I could come back any time and he would help me. He was so nice and he took the time to listen to me. After my appt. I jokingly said wow you are really tall...why didn't you play basketball instead of being a Dr......he said "I Was" then told me he played for the Miami Heat. My youngest son was with me and he plays basketball. He thought that was just so cool. Our family will be praying for yours....God Bless

Rhea,
Words cannont express how my heart breaks for you and the boys. I always enjoyed being around Alec and could see the love he had for you and the boys. I'll never forget how one of your boys told me while I was volunteering at Cornelius Elementary in Jr. Achievement, that he wanted to grow up and be a professional basketball player and a doctor. Just like his Dad.
My thoughts are with you.

I have been a patient of Dr Kessler's for two years. During this period he has proved to be the kindest most caring physician that I could hopely want any physician to be. I am so sadded by his death and know that I will miss his warm smile, guidance and advise. I was at his office on Wednesday before his untimely death and witnessed his care and exchange with his staff. My heart goes out to his family and especially to his staff who I observed loved him dearly as he loved him.

Dear Rhea:
I was so sad to learn of Alec's death. My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. We were neighbors at Portsview in Aventura when Alec played for the Miami heat and you were so kind in helping me decorate my apartment. I
have thought of you often, and now I will keep you in my prayers.

To the Kessler Family. My sincerest regrets go out to you and your family. I never knew or met you husband/father but, my mother did. He did a knee replacement for my mother Elizabeth Jarrell in Gulf Breeze. She would speak so highly of him and tell me how much of a great person/doctor he is. I myself now live in MN and she had told me that he had once lived here growing up. I think she thought it was a neat coincidence. Well I thought i would drop a line or two letting you know that even people that had never even met him, he left a long, wonderful impression on.
October 17, 2007
Dear Christopher and family,
I was shocked to learn of your loss. You have been gone for a few years. You are still 7 years old in my mind's eye. I loved being your first grade teacher. My favorite memory of your dad and you is the time he came to our poetry reading day. He had to duck to enter the room. You were so proud to see him that day. We sat outside under the trees and enjoyed the day as you read him your poetry book. Your dad sat in a small chair. I know he was uncomfortable but he never let on and he was totally engrossed in listening to you read to him. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.
love,
Mrs. Deborah Brown

Dear Rhea, Chad, and family,
I was blessed to have worked with Alec and with Chad in the last 5 years. When I worked with Chad, I heard many stories of his brother, Alec. What a pleasure it was to finally meet this brother! Alec was a excellent surgeon, a gentle, kind man who possessed an incredible sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all. Thank you for sharing him with us. May God bless you with peace during the times ahead. Denise Nichols CRNA

To the Kessler Family. AS a teamate and roomate of Chad at UGA I Johnny Smith send my deepest regreats and sympathy to the Kessler family I shall keep all of you all in my prayers
October 17, 2007
To the entire Kessler family:

My sincerest sympathies go out to you all. As a student at UGA in the early 80's and a follower of the program for many years before and since, I was lucky enough to watch both Chad and Alec grow on the court and in the classroom. I sat through nearly every practice for 3 years at Stegeman. UGA could not have asked for better representatives in every way. That 1990 season is one we all cherish, and Alec played a considerable part in its success.

As I have read through these condolences, I am truly humbled by the sheer number of people Alec touched in his life. It is as if his life was like a pebble thrown into a pond; the ripples of Alec's life will live far beyond his time on earth.

I regret that I did not know him personally, but Alec clearly was a fine player and an even better person, husband/father and physician. I consider the entire of Bulldog Nation to have been lucky to have such a wonderful, caring, compassionate and humble man in our midst. This is a great tragedy. My thoughts are especially with Alec's wife and kids. Stay strong. You have many people thinking of you in this difficult time.

TO THE KESSLER FAMILY, THIS IS A DIFFICULT TIME FOR YOU. DR. KESSLER WAS SUCH A GREAT PERSON TO KNOW. WE MOURN YOUR LOSS SPEAKING FOR THE STAFF AT CAROLINA MED.CTR. ODS IN CHARLOTTE . GOD BLESS-BEV METZ RN.

I was at UGA the same time as Alec, and he was one of the reasons I was proud to call myself a Bulldog while in Athens - not only for his athletic achievements but also for his class and academic record. The Bulldog Nation has lost a great one.
October 17, 2007
As a UGA b-ball fan, I had the pleasure of spending a few hours at the 1989 SEC tourney hanging out with Alec,Mike Harron and some other friends. Alec went out of his way to accomodate us. He was as nice a guy as I've ever met.
We never had any real contact until 20 years later when we ran in to each other while tailgating at UGA. He acted like we were best friends.
He was truly the all american guy.
October 17, 2007
You were a great Bulldog. Smile down upon the Dogs from heaven.

Dear Kessler Family,

I had the pleasure of coaching basketball his two sons with Mr Kessler at the Gulf Breeze Rec Center. Alec was one of the nicest people I ever got to know. Im glad I had the pleasure to meet him, and to be able to coach with him, I saw how much he cared for his sons, Chris and Nick. Alec will me missed,,

Dear Rhea and family,

I was deeply saddened to hear of Alec's passing. We attended Roswell HS and UGA together, and Alec was always someone that I respected and admired. I was extremely shy, but Alec was the type of guy that made those around him feel accepted, and just a little more confident. How could one not? He was a great kid, who grew up to be a great man. The last time I saw you both was when Bill Frey had lost his parents. Alec's quite humor and steady strength was so apparent, and I remember how it lifted everyone around him during that time, especially Bill. I remember how he almost was clobbered by the ceiling fan in the kitchen of Bill's parent's house. Everyone burst into laughter, and Alec took it in stride. But somehow, it was what everyone needed. It is something I have never forgotten. As I read through the many stories and messages, I am struck, but not surprised at the outpouring for his passing. He was an incredibly special man, and his strength and character will live on in those he impacted so positively in his life, who were many! Whether it was simple deeds, or tremendous achievement, he is remembered. Everyone who knew him or met him shares in your loss. Words cannot bring him back, but will hopefully help to bring you and your boys through this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you, his entire family, and your two sons!
October 17, 2007
Rhea,
Our hearts break for you and the boys. Alec's sincerity and dedication were a true gift. Our family has prayed for you daily. As I was searching for words of comfort for you and the boys, I came across a devotion in my bible that spoke to me for you. Even in the depths of sorrow, hope breathes. Hope that you will see Alec again in heaven. Hope in God' s capacity to infuse suffering with purpose. And hope that because of his healing power, your sorrow will not go on forever.
God Bless, Allen & Kim Turner

To the Kessler family, Our prayers are with you at this time of terrible loss and sorrow. We first met Dr. Kessler in 2005 and he performed surgery on my husband's knee in 2007. He was so kind and patient while explaining everything to us before surgery and to me after the surgery. I have truly never met a doctor like him. I wish there were more like Dr. Kessler but I think maybe he was one of a kind. He will be truly missed by alot of people. Our family will be praying for your family. We understand the pain you are all going through, due to losing our son suddenly (age 32) a few years ago. God Bless You All and keep you in His care.
October 17, 2007
Rhea and Family,
We will be praying for you and your boys during this trying time.Sympathy and compassion are all that we can offer, may the Lord God Almighty give you peace and understanding. Your loss is great and I will be praying for you so that you will have the strength to carry on the life that you Alec have started.
October 17, 2007
As I sat here in my office this morning and read through all the entries, I couldn't help all the tears rolling down my face. I love the DAWGS as much as anyone ever has or will and what a tragic event to happen. I can't help but think of the pain and grief that the family, former teammates and friends are going through, but also want them to find comfort in God's love and the promise that He has made to us.

Almost 8 years ago when my wife and I were on a trip to the Great Alaska Shootout to see the Dawgs play, at the age of 32 I suffered a heart attack on the return trip home, so besides this involving Alec it also hits very close to me. I had triple bypass surgery a few days later and was really lucky to survive that ordeal. I look in the face of my now five year old daughter and two year old son and realize now that God still has work for me to do on earth.

I know it makes no sense why God would spare others and not Alec. He was so good for so many people. Being in Roswell now for 15 years, I have heard a lot of stories about Alec from his high school friends and know a lot of people at UGA and I have never ever heard one bad thing about him. The Lord teaches us to not only be good, but to do good and Alec certainly fit that bill.

God bless the family, friends and former teammates that are so saddened by this loss.

My heart was deeply saddened by the news of Alec. I work in the office of the residency program in Charlotte where Alec received his training. It seems like it was just yesterday when he graduated and said goodbye.
May the family find peace and comfort knowing that Alec touched so many lives. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family as well as his very close friends. God bless you all.
October 17, 2007
To the Kessler family: Alec and I met in 9th grade and became close friends. I was so sorry to see him move south at the end of that year. We kept in touch for awhile but then lost touch over time. Naturally, I followed his public years in basketball and saw him on TV a few times which was cool. He was one of the few people I always felt like I should reconnect with but never did. Some of the funny things he said still stick in my head today, he was so funny without trying to be. God bless you all. We lost one of the good guys.
October 17, 2007
Please know that Alec's family and friends are in the thoughts and prayers of many Bulldogs. Although I did not know Alec personally, he is a part of our Bulldog family and we share your loss. Alec made all of us proud. May you find comfort in knowing that he will live on through the imprints he had on so many other lives.

Our prayers are with you and your family. May God give you strength and peace. I did not have the chance to know Alec but so many have written words of love and friendship. He will be missed. God Bless all of you.

Sorry to hear about the death of your loved one. God promises that one day soon he will put an end to all sickness, pain suffering and even death.
Respectfully,
October 17, 2007
My sympathy to the family of Alec. One thing that will help you get through this situation is God's word the Bible. And there He assures us" "God is near to those that are broken at heart and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. The Bible gives you hope of seeing Alec again right here on a paradise earth in the very near future. It also promise us that our enemy death will be no more. May these words give you a measure of comfort and strength to endure in this time of such deep sorrow.

Dr Kessler will be greatly missed by Gulf Breeze Hospital Radiology. He was always so friendly and a pleaseure to work with. I would watch as he walked out the door and would giggle wondering how many times he would forget to duck. His response to me one day was he finally learned after hitting the door ways a few times. Our thoughts and prayers are with, Rhea and the boys.

It's said that anyone can count the appleseeds in an apple, but only God can count the apples in an appleseed.

Reading these testimonials is like viewing an apple orchard as far as the eye can see -- childhood friends, high school friends, college friends, family friends, professional friends, medical colleagues, patients, admirers in general -- people from all walks of life and from all over the country touched by this extraordinary human being.

A cynic once said that 'no great men are good men'. Alec was demonstrably both. He was incredibly accomplished, but never let it go to his head. He demanded so much of himself, but was so compassionate toward others. He was so serious and focused in his pursuits, but had such a great sense of humor and appreciation for the big picture.

We mourn Alec's untimely , but we celebrate a marvelous life -- and we also celebrate assurances of an eternal reunion with those we love with our Father in heaven. 'In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.'
October 16, 2007
The weekday night shift at Baptist Hospital operating room will miss Dr Kessler very much. We would also like to send our condolences to Mrs. Kessler and the boys. Sincerely, Susan, Mike and Faye

Dear Rhea, I know you don't remember me, but we met during Alec's residency at CMC. I met you Nicholas and Christorpher in the Emergency Dept one day a few years ago. I gave the boys Tootsie Pops which I kept in my pockets for kids. Anyway. Rhea, I was shocked when I heard of Alec's death. I enjoyed Alec's company and working with him. He was always nice, and he even talked basketball with me even when I knew he wasn't interested it. He was an excellent physician. My heart breaks for you and the boys and my prayers are with your entire family. As I'm sure are those of the friends here in Charotte and at CMC. Sincerely, Kenny Maxwell

Dear Rhea,the boys and family,
I worked closely with ALec in the capacity of Anesthesiologist at Baptist hospital.I was there when he joined the orthopedic practice and very soon, became one of their busiest surgeons. His charming looks, his smile and positive attitude, combined with his high quality of work turned him into one of the most likeable surgeons. I turned to him when my wife sustained a fracture of her leg and he saw her through.
He was One Heck Of a Guy, always, always upbeat, cheerful, easily approachable and surely a great surgeon with superior skills.
He will be greatly missed and nothing can fill that big void that has been left behind.
My wife and myself pray that you all have the strenght to overcome this tragedy.
Our prayers will forever be with you.
With Love

I lived next door to the Kesslers for years while Alec was in medical school at Emory. At that time, I was fairly young (I am a freshmen in college now) but I remember looking to him in awe of his basketball skill and overall friendly and selfless demeanor. My dad would always talk about how much of a "class act" and great guy Alec was and it was no doubt true. He was one of the true role models out there and I am grateful to have been able to know him. I was so shocked and saddened by this news and I wish the best of luck to Rhea, Christopher, Nicholas, and the rest of the family. I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers.
October 16, 2007

Rhea,

I am saddened by your husband's passing, and I am praying for you and your boys during this difficult time. I enjoyed meeting Alec at the reunion last summer. It is clear from the story of Alec in the paper and the comments of those who knew him so well that he was a great man, a gifted surgeon, a devoted husband and a caring father. I called Mom tonight and told her about Alec. She wants you to know that she is thinking of you and saying prayers too.. Susan Gall Harrison and Family

October 16, 2007
Rhea & Family,

We were shocked & devastated to hear about the loss of Alec. I met Alec in Roswell shortly after he moved there. When I went to college at Tennessee, I always went to the Vols/UGA games early, during pregame shootaround, to kid Alec that Doug Roth would "eat his lunch." Alec would always have a big laugh about that.

Later, when Jennifer & I were in Miami while I was in law school, we got to know Alec and Rhea. Before meeting you two, Jennifer was doubtful that an NBA player & his wife would possibly be interested in hanging out with a poor law student couple. But Rhea & Alec were both so friendly, nice and incredibly humble, and some of our fondest memories of our 4 years in Miami are of the two of you. I will never forget you all (and T-Bone) hunkering down with us at our apartment during Hurricane Andrew!

Rhea, you and your boys, as well as the rest of the Kessler &
Harrelson families, will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Alec C. Kessler was a great man who was very compasionate for the care of his patients. He was the greastest Doctor to work for and he is very truely missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, and sons. To my fellow co-workers long as we help each other out we can and will get through this very difficult time.
October 16, 2007
I was heartbroken to hear of Dr. Kessler's passing. I was his patient and I never met a nicer physician...was struck by his boyish charm and down to earth humor. He was truly beloved by his Baptist family and had a terrific reputation as the 'go-to' ortho doc. As a late night shifter at Baptist we kidded each other over our late/long hours when I got the chance here and there to speak to him on the phone. My daughter attends school with his son and she met the Kessler family when they first moved to Gulf Breeze and commented on how very nice they were...and those wonderful Great Danes! Makes me laugh when I think of the look on my daughter's face when she told me how tall he was! My heart, thoughts and prayers are with the Kessler family at this time. Rhea, Nick, Chris and family...take comfort that this man was so very much respected and beloved. Love, Nan and Niki Koomen
October 16, 2007
Dear Kessler family,
Our sincere prayers go out for you in your hour of sorrow. Dr. Kessler was the kind of doctor everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. He took very good care of our Mom and let us know we could ask him anything. His kindness and patience is what stood out about him. He will be missed. May God bless and keep you all.

Everyone at Roswell High School was proud to have Alec as a friend, teammate and classmate. He was an inspiration to all of us and he made the world a better place. My condolences go out to all of his family!

Aunt Ginger, Uncle Jay, Cousin Chad - (Rhea and Kids whom I've regretfully never had a chance to meet),

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Alec. I can't tell you how many times in the last few days that I've thought about the many great times we spent together when we were young. I remember in particular the wonderful christmas celebrations that we had at Grandma Lu's and Grandpa Hugh's. Alec always found time for me even though I was the only girl trying to fit in with all the boys! I especially remember the racing cars that grandpa set up and the many, many card games that lasted from morning to night with big bowls of cheezes.

The entire Kessler family was such a great inspiration for me - I always have talked fondly of you all. Alec was such a warm, kind, and thoughtful person - the type of person you could only hope to have as a son, husband, or father. You were all so blessed to have had (even though much to short) the time that you did with Alec.

Many of my friends became big followers of Alec during his time in the NBA. My Husband was especially proud of Alec and talked of him with great pride. The evening when we went to see Alec play in the metrodome was a great memory for all of us. Alec was so thoughtful to make sure his entire extended family had a chance to be there.

I have always had hopes of meeting all of the extended members of the Kessler family and maybe some day in the future I will be able to do so. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this unbelievable time of loss. I'm sure that Alec will be smiling down at all of us in the arms of Grandma Lu and Grandpa Hugh.

With Love, Molly Bean

Rhea and kids,
My thoughts are with you all. Please let me know if I can do anything to help you guys out.
Alec was always someone that I looked up to (and not just for his height). I was always impressed when I heard how he studied while the Heat guys went out and partied. He had such a calm confidence about him that I respect.
Peace

We are so saddened to hear of Dr. Kessler's death. We pray that God will give you the grace to get thru this most difficult time in your lives. Dr. Kessler performed knee replacement surgery on my husband just this past May. What an awesome surgeon he was. We both remember his bringing Christopher with him while making rounds the day after surgery. What a fine young man we saw when being introduced to Christopher. I cannot begin to imagine the brokenness that you and your family are feeling, but I do know that our God is there for you during this time.

Rhea, Your Dad will recognize mine and Clayton Dodd's name as we worked with him at Olinkraft/Manville/RWD Pkg in West Monroe. In my visits to our offices in Atlanta I especially enjoyed visiting with Glen Ray and hearing about Alec and the Miami Heat....and of you and your precious family. Clayton and Barbara Dodd and Jim and I are thinking of you and yours. Do give our best to your Dad and Mom.

May the hope of the resurrection and life everlasting sustain you in this most difficult time. Dr. Kessler was the finest doctor I have ever been treated by; his genuine concern for his patients as real people, with real fears, was always evident. We all will miss, although not as much as you. God bless you all.
October 16, 2007
A great man to work for and a great man just to know. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Kessler and the boys. God bless all of you. Phyllis

Dr Kessler was an amazing man and doctor. He done surgery on my son Joey last year. He was wonderful to him and made him feel very safe and calm, and I loved that about him. He always had time for any of his questions and never made him feel like he was just another patient. Dr Kessler was a wonderful doctor and one of those that are hard to find "and very rare this day and time". God Bless him and his family and friends. You are in my prayers. My son will never forget him and neither will I.
October 16, 2007
Wow, what a shock to hear. With all the negative we hear about Atlanta sports stars Alec was really an exception.

Rhea,
I don't even know you or your family. I recently moved here from Nashville, TN. I am a RN at Baptist. My twin sister Keri Stirling was once the girlfriend of Tyler Green, she told me once that she ate dinner at your home. She said your husband was a great guy and you were such a nice person. I just lost my 35 year old best friend. She was a mother, wife, daughter, Doctor, and like my sister. It hurts, My prayers are with you and your family. There are no easy answers but faith will lead the way.
Sincerely,
Kim Downs

October 16, 2007
Dr. Kessler was a wonderful physician. He was a skilled surgeon who took time to understand the fear and anxiety of his patients. He put my wrist back together after I had a bad fall. I will never forget this great man.
October 16, 2007
To the Kessler Family,
When we moved to Roswell, Alec was the first friend my brother Mark Davis had, living two doors up the street. Alec was a skinny kid with a big huge smile and his family became great neighbors and friends. Being the older sister, I got to watch Mark and Alec, along with Scott Glass, Mark Richardson, and Bill Fry, as they had great times together and yes, seemed to get into all kinds of mischief! They always had great fun and were always laughing. Alec would come over for dinner AFTER eating dinner at home, and we watched him bulk up and grow into an awesome basketball player. He practiced all the time, showing his dedication to loving the sport and that winning spirit of his. I loved hearing about him and following his career, and always was proud to say I knew him as a great guy. And I'll never forget the "Lost at Sea" episode of their lives, with the boys out in the islands, not knowing the world was looking for them! My friends still call my brother "Gilligan" sometimes! Alec lived life to the fullest, and loved his family, his friends, and was a true inspiration to so many. We will greatly miss him and I cherish my wonderful memories of him. He was a gift for us to embrace on this earth, and I pray for peace and comfort for all who knew him, and for his beautiful family, to remember a great man we were so blessed to know and love. God keep you in His comfort, and our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to you. Love, Dave and Perri and the Wagner Family
October 16, 2007
My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Kessler family. I played basketball against Alec in HS and with him at UGA. He set a standard which we all looked up to on and off the court.
October 16, 2007
alec, thanks for the memories.rest in peace.
October 16, 2007
Rhea; Kelly will personally relay to you our family's deepest sympathies...as I read Alec's name on the obit I still have a hard time accepting it as reality. Keep the faith, all the good memories like our Heat midnight post game pizza stops as Alec was wearing his short sleeve button downs and flip flops in Miami will have the greatest of value. There are a ton of funny, loving memories out there to capture. You're not alone, we are available when you need us. God Bless you and the boys.
October 16, 2007
I remember Alec as a fine man and basketball player. He had a great sense of humor and obviously was well liked and respected by everyone. His legacy will be the family he leaves behind and the example he set as an athlete, a man, a doctor but most importantly as a husband, father, son, brother and friend. He represented all of these roles and UGA well and he will be missed. My heart and my prayers are with his family during this time of sadness.
October 16, 2007
As the son of a UGA Basketball player and UGA fan, Alec Kessler was a great inspiration to me. I am very saddened by his death and my deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends.
October 16, 2007
My family had the privilege of meeting Dr Kessler when my 8 year old son broke his leg at the ACL in March of 2007 – only 7 months ago. He made a lasting impression that now has my heart weighing heavy. I called his office in tears while trying to find an adequate surgeon who I trusted to perform the surgery on my son, who is also my only child. Dr. Kessler immediately won me over with his genuine compassion, understanding and respect. Dr. Kessler was bound by the constraints of the hospital and being that the surgery was considered elective; he was unable to do it at the Andrews Institute. He went above and beyond by calling a colleague and getting us in. In his eyes, he may not have done a whole lot, but as a mother, he handed me the moon. This is a tremendous loss. My heart goes out to his wife, his children and his family. You are not alone. Our entire society feels the impact of this loss.
October 16, 2007
Rhea,
You and your family are in prayers. May the Lord comfort you during this time.
October 16, 2007
Our hearts go out to the entire Kessler family. I was privilledged to have worked with Dr. Kessler in the OR at Baptist & Gulf Breeze Hospitals. He was a skilled surgeon as well as a fine man. He was always gracious and appreciative for the assistance he received. I remember, I would always ask him about his family. You could tell by his comments that he loved you all, very much!

My families prayers are with you in this difficult time. May you find hope in the Lord and in the comfort he brings to you.

God Bless,
Mimi, David & Gabrielle Gulley

Our very deepest sympathy to Rhea, their sons, and to Chad and his family. Our prayers are with you at this time of sorrow. We remember so well all the good times our sons Brad and James had with Chad and Alec in Pound Ridge, NY. Alec became such an outstanding scholar and athlete and doctor. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. This is sent with our love to you all.
October 16, 2007
To the Kessler Family, my deepest sympathy. Alex was such a wonderful human and shining star in the Bulldog Nation. May God bless all of you.
October 16, 2007
We were lucky to live next door to Alec and his family for several years when he was going through medical school. We had great times with them. Our son Max loved getting to be around Alec, his sons, and Rhea. I was amazed at how talented Alec was at sports like skiing (doing it barefoot) and golf, yet he was always very humble. He was a first class person in every regard and we will really miss him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

To the Kessler Family,
My heart is full of sadness for all of you and for those of us who knew him as part of our professional family. As part of his total team at Baptist I can tell you he was one of the most wonderful physicians I have ever worked with. His humor was unique, of course at 5 feet tall we gave him something to work with.
He was hard working and very skilled. A twelve hour day was rich and rewarding with him.
Thank you for sharing him with us. We miss him terribly
October 16, 2007
Rhea,
Your family is in our prayers during this difficult time. Alec was such a humble man to have accomplished so much. He was a professional gentleman.

It seems like yesterday when I met Alec at his first Coliseum Club Banquet. He was an oustanding person and student athlete. My prayers to all of the Kessler family .
October 16, 2007
To the Kessler family, my deepest sympathies and respect in your time of sorrow. As a precedent student-athlete and extended round-ball teammate, it was always a pleasure and inspiration to know of Alec's accomplishments and wonderful qualities that reflected so well on UGA and everything he represented.
October 16, 2007
To the Kessler family:
My greatest memory of Alec used to be how he handled LSU to win the SEC championship. Now after reading these entries my greatest memory is of him as a champion husband and father. He is remembered the best way any man could be. God bless you all.
October 16, 2007
Although I only knew Dr. Kessler for a short period of time, his loss has greatly hurt my heart. As my doctor (he gave me two brand new knees), he always gave me the time to answer all my questions and did so in such a compassionate way. What a great doctor he was! My prayers are with what could only be, a most wonderful family! I am so very, very sorry for your loss!
October 16, 2007

Firstly, My prayers go out to this fine Dr's family. Dr. Kessler was my surgeon when I was in a motorcycle accident. My radius was fractured badly and I thought my hand would never heal. I just saw him last month and was suppose to be back in his office this week. Dr. Kessler gave me the hope that my hand will heal and be back to normal in do time.He was such a joy and a excellent doctor. I want to thank you Dr. Kessler for all you have done for the community and others who were graced with your presence.
October 16, 2007
Dear Kessler Family:
Alec became one of UGA's leading examples of how an indivdual can balance athletics, education, Friends and Family at the very highest level.
October 16, 2007
I was one of Alec's medical school class mates at Emory. He was one of the nicest and smartest in the class. He was truely an inspiration. He stood out as a true gentleman. I am deeply saddened by this news and will keep the Kessler family in my prayers.
October 16, 2007
I was a fan of Alec while he played for UGA. I am deeply saddened by this tragic news. He was a fine man and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kessler family.
October 16, 2007
Rhea,
My wife and I were deeply saddened to here of Alec's passing. I had the honor to know him before his move to GA in high school. I followed his career at UGA and my cousin and I reconnected with him during his playing days with Miami. It always took us off guard when a kid would approach him for an autograph and ask "are you really going to become a doctor"? People knew about him because parents would tell their kids to aspire to be like him. I have used Alec as an example to my own children when talking about the importance of school, and will continue to use him as a light to guide them. I thought to myself last night God must have needed a center, then thought nah, he must have needed a really good person!!
DO NOT MOURN HIS DEATH, CELEBRATE HIS LIFE!! May God bless the Kessler family.
October 16, 2007
Rhea: I knew Alec as a kid because he was a close friend of my brother Matt when Alec and Chad lived in Pound Ridge, NY. Alec was such a nice, kind, hard-working kid. I remember well playing basketball against him, and being 2 years older, being able to beat him handily. Those of us in Bedford and Pound Ridge were sad when Alec and Chad moved away to GA but we eagerly followed, first, Chad's career at Georgia and then Alec's career at Georgia and the NBA. I can't tell you how many times we got a great laugh and shrug of amazement at the thought that "little Alec" was now 6'11", an All-American and a professional basketball player. I read box scores every day to see if Alec had played, how he had done and loved reading the stories of how smart and studious he was. It felt neat to know someone who was in the NBA and knowing how level-headed he was (well maybe not when he got lost at sea!) I knew that the NBA wouldn't change the sweet mild-mannered kid he was. As a father of two children myself I can't imagine your pain and grief. I will keep you and the Kesslers in my prayers. God bless. Tad DiBiase
October 16, 2007
I was at UGA in the 80's and knew Chad and Alec from their basketball accomplishments first, but also as outstanding students who were also great, friendly people.
Alec's accomplishments are truly epic. The high level of achievement at all he attempted and mastered is an inspiration.
The world has lost a man with great gifts and whose loss leaves many admirers saddened.
May God Bless this family and may the children know your father was a good and remarkable man.
October 16, 2007
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kessler family. I always admired Alec and his brother Chad for their basketball and academic skills. All Bulldawgs and Roswell Hornets will miss you.
October 16, 2007
As a patient of Dr. Kessler's, I was truly impressed with his skill as a physician and kindness as a human being. I am shocked and saddened by his departure. He was also the ONLY Doctor to see me prior to my appointment time!! He will truly be missed.

October 16, 2007
I am deeply saddened to lose such a fine man at the top of his game. My sympathy and grief has no limits and I pray for Rhea and her two sons. Dr. Kessler was definitely one of our favorite surgeons. Even on a day that wasn't so great, you would never know that he was disappointed or upset. He went with the flow and helped the OR team in all aspects of patient care. Dr. Kessler was the most humble person and had a sense of humor that was fantastic. He would say the funniest things in that deep voice that would just crack everyone up. He was not only a talented surgeon and athelete, he was our friend. He will be remembered forever.

October 16, 2007
Dear Rhea and family,
Words can not express the grief and sorrow we are all feeling. I knew Chad and Alec from Roswell High School. I graduated with Chad and my brother Jonathan graduated with Alec. My husband and I both attended Emory University School of Medicine are both physicians in Newnan, GA and where Chad practices orthopedics. Our kids go to the same school as Chad and Andrea's. For some reason, God has put our families in each other's lives, even if peripherally, for a long time. Reading about all of Alec's accomplishments, that he was number one in his Emory med school class, basketball legacy and the type of husband and father he was, tells everything about the incredible person he was. The world has lost one of it's greatest. Our hearts are truly broken for you all. I am hoping for you and the entire Kessler family that God will give you moments of peace while you are grieving. Alec had such an awesome impact on so many people by the kind of person he was. That legacy will never be gone. Please know we are praying for you all and that God will wrap his arms around you and your children now and evermore.
October 16, 2007
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Your Mary Kay family will always be there for you.
October 16, 2007

October 16, 2007
Hi Rhea, Chris and Nick,
I heard about Alec's passing just before our Gulf Breeze vs. Navarre midget football game on Saturday. I am deeply saddened and heart-broken for you and especially the boys. I'll always cherish the years I coached the boys and always had yours and Alec's support. I am so grateful for Alec coaching Joel this last summer in AAU league and I (and the other guys from our Community Life basketball league) will always cherish the memory of playing ball with a guy who was so much better than all of us but was the classic team player just as I saw him be in every other area of life. My heart grieves for the boys who idolized their awesome daddy. I pray you, Rhea, and Chris and Nick can turn to Jesus for comfort for now and always. We love you guys and are praying for you!
Love and sympathy,
Bill, Andrea, Joel and Olivia Fry

Kessler Family,

I played JV basketball with Alec at Roswell High and later graduated with him in 1985. With 2 High School freshman athletes in my house, I will always reference him as to what a true student-athlete should be.

October 16, 2007
Alec was one of my favorite UGA basketball players ever. It is so sad that he had to leave us at such a young age but what an impact he leaves. May GOD bless his family and friends.
October 16, 2007
He served others that should not be forgotton. Thanks for treating my wifes back ailment.
October 16, 2007
Alec is an inspiration to us all! He, in his short life, accomplished a great deal. Not only did he acheive great things athletically, academically and professionally. He acheived lovingly. No matter how great his celebrity got, he kept his head about him. He gave back what he received in life and much more. Most of all he loved his family, his friends, and his fans and took none for granted. I attended Roswell High with him and am honored to have known him. My thoughts and prayers go out to those he leaves behind.
October 16, 2007
Although I was never fortunate enough to have met him in person, Alec was an inspiration to me. Watching him succeed both on the court and off encouraged student-athletes everywhere.
October 15, 2007
I was shocked this morning when I heard the news of Alec. I worked with Alec when he came on with SOS in Pensacola,FL. He was a gentleman as well as a good orthopaedic surgeon. Our prayers are with you.
October 15, 2007
My sincere condolences to the Kessler family on the loss of Dr. Kessler.

To all who knew Alec,

I am Alec's wife's childhood friend and spent today (Monday) with the Kessler family in their home. They know of this site, and many family members were reading the entries today. Rhea and the boys have not read yet, but it is so important to Rhea for her boys to know all the wonderful things about their Dad, so I guess I'm saying, please share your stories, they are being printed to be passed on to the boys. The family is still so devastated but they are all together in the Kessler home and supporting each other.
October 15, 2007
Dear Rhea, there are no words. Please know how sorry I am and that Buddy and I are praying for you and your precious sons. We will continue to pray for peace and comfort that only God can give.

But what a blessing that you stayed home to be with your family. My prayers and thoughts will be with you for the many months to come. Know that God IS in control, even though we don't always understand HIS plan. May the Lord keep you close to each other and your extended family.
With much love,

I am so sorry to hear about Alec! He will always be remembered in such a positive light! There is nothing anyone can do to ease the pain you must feel but please know that you and your family are in our prayers. Chad, I am very sorry my brother and I hope you know that I am thinking about you, your mom, your dad, and Alec’s wife and children! Your teammate always!
October 15, 2007
Dear Rhea,
May God grant you and your children the peace and comfort of knowing that He is there for you in this time of need. Lean not unto your own understandings, but allow Him to direct your paths. Our MK unit is praying for you.
October 15, 2007
I met Alec once at his brother Chad's graduation ceremony from his orthopaedic residency at MCG. He like his brother was a truly warm, energetic individual who really made you feel like you had known him for a long time. He accomplished much in such a short period of time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family in this difficult time.
October 15, 2007
Rhea, Christopher, and Nicholas -
Wow. We are so saddened by the news of Alec's passing. He was a wonderful man in so many ways. Brilliantly smart, an incredibly hard worker, an amazing athlete, and accomplished doctor... But most of all, he was a devoted husband and father. We always loved his dry sense of humor and he was so comfortable to be around Alec. We hope you find comfort in knowing that Alec is leaving a legacy for the rest of us to always remember and strive for.
October 15, 2007
Dear Rhea and family, We were shocked and deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Our prayers are with you and your boys.

I only met Alec on a couple of occasions. I was a few classes behind him, but I followed his career at UGA and the Heat. I enjoyed seeing a Roswell guy do good, but I think that he was a better man and father, and will be missed. My thoughts and Prayers are with his family.
October 15, 2007
Rhea and Family~

Know that all your Mary Kay sisters are praying for you. I am submitting a recent photo during some great times at seminar in Dallas. I am truly sorry for your loss.

October 15, 2007
One of my greatest memories at UGA was playing pick-up games at Stegman one Sunday afternoon. From the time it opened until it closed, the team of guys I was playing with never lost. Of course we benefited from the graciousness of one game where a tall Freshman who was red-shirting played for an opposing team and took it easy on us. I can always say I played against an NBA player and a class act in Alec Kessler. I will be praying for his family as they grieve his loss.
October 15, 2007
I never knew this big man but witnessed his big heart in the red and black. He made me proud to be a fan of our state's greatest university. I hope he understood how exemplary and important it was that he decided to grace our presence with his 'dawgged' determination on the basketball court. Wish I'd known him.
October 15, 2007
Rhea and family,
Your friends from the Class of 1986 send our condolence for you and your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Cheryl Johnson Sheffield, Michelle Kendrick Majures, Denise George, Jena Sheely Adkins, Monica Myers Kubisz

With deepest sympathies..

"May you rest in peace"
October 15, 2007
Dearest Kesslers,

As a high school basketball coach and teacher, I often think of the example Alec led off the court. I will always remember his gentle smile and the humble way he made everyone feel significant. He was a blessing to me, not only in high school, but now as I try to guide student-athletes.

May God be your refuge and strength; may He grant you peace and comfort during this time of sorrow. My family will be praying for your family.
October 15, 2007
My prayers go out to your family.

I did not know Alec, your loved one, but, it really causes sadness when such a tragedy happens, so please take comfort in GOD's promises of a near future of "no more pain, tears or sorrw."
October 15, 2007
Our family enjoyed watching Alec and Chad play for UGA. They set great examples to others...on the road trips and SEC tournaments, you would see them with their gear AND their books.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chad and all of Alec's family.
October 15, 2007
Dear Rhea, Andrea, Chad,and family,
There are no words that will help at a time like this, but know that the prayers of many are with you, lifting you up to Jesus, our Source, for His peace and comfort. Love in Christ, Martha and Randy Grant
October 15, 2007
Dear Rhea, Christopher, and Nicolas:

We are with you and will continue to be.

As you all know, your husband and father's height is significant. Now, his height reaches to the stars. Alec epitomized making the most out of one's life. An accomplished Human Being whose effort to be a great husband, father, son, brother, doctor, student, basketball player, and a friend was effortless through dedication, focus, hard work, integrity, and LOVE. A well raised man, just as his brother, Dr. Chad Kessler.

Excellence shines brightly like the stars. That is where Alec's height reaches to now, the stars. The tallest Human Being that I have been blessed to know. May God bless and keep Alec well and look after his wife, sons, family and friends.

Love ya,

Bill & Rosa Frey
October 15, 2007
God gave us all a gift when he placed Alec in our lives. Alec was the giant that stood out in a crowd. He stood out because of all the right reasons. Alec touched so many lives and left so many positive impressions to remember. His short time on earth will not be forgotten. My hope is that God bless all those Alec came in contact with in his life and that God be with the Kessler family today and forever. Alec will be missed but will live in our hearts forever!. God Bless
October 15, 2007
Alec's legacy at Georgia, and in his life after graduating, is an example for all student athletes to strive to accomplish.

My deepest sympathy to the Kessler family and the community that Dr. Kessler served.
October 15, 2007
What a great loss to this world. I worked with Dr. Kessler during his residency in Charlotte. One of the best human beings I have ever met! A true team player in every sense of the word; in every aspect of his life. My thoughts and prayers are with the Kessler family. Know that your loved one touched SO many lives. He will be greatly missed by many.

My heart goes out to Chad, who I graduated with from Roswell High in 1983. You and your family are in my thoughts!
October 15, 2007
The world has lost a fantastic person. He was so nice to everyone and such an inspiration. He was the definition of what a role model really is. His family and friends even in their deep sadness should feel blessed to have known such a great man. I am sorry for EVERYONES loss.
October 15, 2007
I don't think anyone graduating from Roswell's Class of 1985 was untouched by Alec's kindness and honor. He was truly one of the best our class had to offer. It is odd how we remember the smallest conversations so many years later, but this one is crystal clear today. I can remember seeing Alec at the Tate Center shortly after Bif Myers, our fellow classmate and my high school sweetheart, died. Looking like I could use a friend, Alec asked if I had time for lunch. Truth be told, he had probably already eaten. Alec told me to always remember Bif would be there as long as he was in my heart and to think of him with a smile not a tear. So to Alec's family- keep Alec with you in your hearts and somehow try to think of him and find a smile. He would like that. Know that the world was a better place because of him.
October 15, 2007
Dear Kessler Family,

Hearing this news this morning just
took our breath away. We thought that this just couldn't be true! We are so truely sorry for your loss. What a wonderful man Alec was in every way possible. We had been big fans while living in Marietta,Roswell and Alpharetta GA,
then we moved down to Niceville,FL
and heard he was a very well known and skilled orthopedic surgeon in Gulfbreeze. He holds a very special place in my heart for the fact that he operated on my husband just 3 short weeks ago. My husband broke his right femur bone and got lucky enough to have
Dr. Alec fix him. Alec was nice enough to come out and meet me soon after the surgery was over and meeting him in that family
waiting area is something I will never forget. He was so nice and sincere and just showed such warmth in telling me that everything with the surgery went really well. Thank you Rhea,Nicholas,Christopher and Mr & Mrs Kessler for sharing your
son,husband and father with us.
Heaven now has one of the greatest
"DAWGS" looking over the rest of us
"puppers". May God be with you all during this hard time. God bless you.
October 15, 2007
As long time Georgia basketball fans, we watched Alec in every game he played at Georgia. What a great student, player, doctor and person.
October 15, 2007
YOU WERE A GOOD MAN, REST IN PEACE ALEC
October 15, 2007
Dear Rhea,Ginger,Jay and Chad-
Our deepest sympathy go out to you and your family. We read about Alec in the Ct newspaper and were shocked! I remember Alec from the Persnickety days. I knew he was a great athlete and a smart student and would go on to bigger and better things. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
October 15, 2007
Dr.Kessler will be truly missed. He was a wonderful person and surgeon. I was his patient until we moved to Chattanooga earlier this year. My thoughts and prayers are with Rhea and his sons. May God bless them and help them in this terrible time.
October 15, 2007
I knew Alec from RHS class of 85 also. There was not a finer member of our class! I am so saddened to hear this news. My prayers are with the entire Kessler family. I can only hope to raise my own son to be as fine a person as Alec Kessler was. Rhea, may God comfort you and hold you and your boys through this devastating time.
October 15, 2007
I met Alec in medical school at Emory. Everyone was in awe of his talents, both physically and intellectually. We worked together in gross anatomy lab and I was really inspired by how he lived life by his terms and not as others would have him live. Who walks away from pro basketball to endure the grind of medical school, residency, etc. Alec was one-of-a-kind and he will be greatly missed.
October 15, 2007
My thoughts and prayers are with Alec's wife and kids. He was a good humble man that will be missed. I am honored to have known him.

Knowing Alec from Roswell High, we both feel a great deal of sorry for Alec's family. When we talk to our boys about being an athlete Alec's name inevitably comes up. Great guy, good grades, hard worker, career after sports. What a great role model.

Our prayers are with the family. May the God of all peace comfort you in this most difficult time.

RIP Dawg. RIP...
October 15, 2007
I got to know Alec in Charlotte where he was a resident, I'm a nurse anesthetist and I spent many nights in the OR with him. He was a great guy and surgeon. He will be missed.
October 15, 2007
Dear Kessler family,
I too was shocked and saddened to learn of Alec's death. I have so many good memories of time spent with him in high school. I played basketball with him as 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. I sat next to him in classes and hung out with him on weekends. I was always impressed with his friendliness and especially his work ethic. He was very intelligent and was able to acheive anything he set his mind to do. He is one of the classmates that I would have loved to have more interaction with over the years. He was a true first class guy, that was evident even as a 16 year old long ago. I will be praying for you in the days ahead.
October 15, 2007
Alec you were one of the greatest! You were the epitome of what a student-athlete was suppose to be!
October 15, 2007
Alec was a great academic and player while I was in school. We were both Pre-med and everyone knew him when he walked into class. He was well spoke of and respected in the Microbiology program. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. A sad day for the Bulldawg Nation.
October 15, 2007
my deepest prayers go to Dr. Kesslers family. I worked with him thru Baptist Hospital and enjoyed watching persue a career that I knew he loved. He was great with the area athletes and we will miss him dearly.
October 15, 2007
Auburn fan here who enjoyed watching Alec play during his outstanding career in the SEC. My sympathies go out to his family.
October 15, 2007
October 15, 2007
I lost touch with Alec after high school but I will always remember seeing him in the halls and classes at Roswell High and always having a smile on his face. You will be missed by all whose lives you touched. Rest in peace.
October 15, 2007
May God Bless your wife and young boys. The basketball team in Heaven just got a NO. 1 draft pick. From a former Bulldog.
October 15, 2007
Alec was my next door neighbor for several years in Redwood Falls, Minnesota back in the early 70's when we were just little kids. I was good friends with Alec’s big brother Chad. Alec, naturally wanted to tag along with “the big boys” and he did. But funny thing, we liked him. Even though he was the little kid following along, I remember he was wise and somehow mature and thoughtful for his age.

He was about 8 years old at the time and he was very sharp. By the way, he was 8, I was about 13 and that was the last time I was taller than him.

My heart goes out to Ginger and Jay. I remember them both being very warm, very patient with us kids, and very loving parents. I feel lucky to have known them.

Before I say “amen” tonight, I will say a little something special for Rhea, Nick, Chris, and of course, Chad “the big boy.”
October 15, 2007
I did not know him personally, but what a fine man and father. He is such a great credit to UGA and himself. May God give him rest and my family prays for his family. A 1980 UGA alumni.
October 15, 2007
I am so sorry to hear of the death of Alec. It was always a treat to know that one of Roswell's own had done so well. It was very impressive that he chose to go get his medical degree and end his pro basketball career. He was a class act.

Thoughts and prayers to the Kessler family.
October 15, 2007
I remember the days in the old Stegeman gym when Alec would work on his game at a basketball goal by himself. He came to UGA and worked hard to become a first round draft choice. I didn't know Alec personally but admired how his hard work really paid off. My prayer is that his wife and children will cherish the time they had with Alec and allow God to help them move forward. Alec's impact on others will never fade.
October 15, 2007
MAY GOD BE WITH YOU ALEC.
October 15, 2007
I knew Alec from RHS, I graduated with his brother Chad in'83. I have followed his career and accomplishmets through out the years. He has always been a beautiful person and I am very proud to have know him. I am very shocked and saddened by his passing. My prayers go out to the family. May God comfort you and give you Peace.
October 15, 2007
I want express my thoughts and prayers to the Kessler family. I was a Freshman at Roswell High School, when Alec was a senior. Alec always carried himself with class. He exemplified what a person and student athlete should strive to be. My prayers extend to his wife, children, Chad and his family.
October 15, 2007
Wow! This is unbelievable. I grew up in Roswell as a boy, and I would play a few pick-up games at the Roswell Rec during the summers with Alec, and it was amazing how his progression came about during his prep career at Roswell High. To go from riding the bench as a junior to legitimate All-State as a senior was amazing. Although I moved away from Atlanta prior to starting high school, I followed Alec's career closely at Georgia, and was proud to say I remembered him when I lived in Roswell. Roswell High School and the University of Georgia have really lost an ambassador, and a family has lost a father. God bless the Kessler family.
October 15, 2007
Alec was the embodiment of what every UGA student-athlete current and future should strive to be. His performance on the court were supassed by only his performance in the classroom and his character as a man. Alec was a person any parent would hope their son would grow up to be, or their daughter would grow up to marry. The Bulldog Nation has lost one of thier finest members. God bless the Kessler family.
October 15, 2007
A true class act. I loved watching him play for the Dawgs! Great performer on the court, but more especially, in the classroom. He will truly be missed!
October 15, 2007
I was both shocked and saddened to hear of Alec's sudden passing over the weekend. Alec and I were a part of the Roswell High School Class of 1985 and what I remember was that he was a kind of "everyman" to everyone in the school. He was dynamic and gifted on the basketball court, but he never let any of that go to his head because he was very down to earth and treated everyone with kindness.

I lost touch with him after high school, but I followed his achievements in basketball at UGA and Miami. I last saw him 2 years ago at our 20 year reunion and he came up to me, shook my hand, and told me that he was delighted to see me again and how much he appreciated how much work the reunion committee put into the reunion.

Alec was a class act through and through on being a tremendous athlete, a great friend, and a loving father and husband. Alec - Your presence will be sorely missed at the next class reunion, but I feel honored to have known you and I am comforted to know that you are now with Jesus in heaven. My thoughts and prayers will be with your wife, your children, and your family, during this extremely difficult time.

On behalf of the Class of '85, we love and miss you and we will always cherish your memory!
October 15, 2007
REST IN PEACE ALEC KESSLER
October 15, 2007
I enjoyed watching you play for the Red and Black. You were a class act and you will be missed. My condolences to your family.

October 15, 2007
So shocked and saddened to hear the news. I got to know Alec through Chad while at Georgia. As everyone knows he truely was a great person and a great role model for all. He was "a big guy on campus" but you would never know it when you were around him. He and his family are great people. Rhea, the boys, Chad and the Kessler family are in my thoughts and prayers.
October 15, 2007
To the Kessler Family:
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to your family on our loss of Alec. He was the epitome of a great Student-Athlete, Father and Representative of UGA. May God Bless you in this sad time and may God bless Alec's journey to heaven.
Sincerely,
October 15, 2007
My husband and I did not know Alec from his basketball or college days - he was my husband's doctor for the past couple of years. We were so saddened and shocked to hear of his passing. I always felt that Dr. Kessler had a "presence" that drew people to him, and we will certainly miss him as a fine caring superb doctor that we trusted and respected completely. He touched so many lives in so many ways. Blessings to the Kessler family. An act of kindness may only take a second, but it may be treasured forever in the heart of the one who received it. Thank you, Dr. Kessler.
October 15, 2007
I pray God will comfort the family and give a peace that is only available through our Lord.
October 15, 2007
I met Alec and his brother Chad not long after they moved to Roswell. I (along with many others) have many fine memories of playing b-ball at the Roswell Rec with Alec. It seems from the other posts here that Alec always remained the friendly, determined person he was even as a youth. I enjoyed watching him mature and excel in basketball and life.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children and to the rest of his family.
October 15, 2007
My heart dropped this morning when I read the news of Alec's passing.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. God bless.
October 15, 2007
As a fellow classmate of Alec's at UGA this really is surreal and unreal. Enjoyed watching him play especially that 1990 season with wins over LSU and Kentucky at home.
I met him once after a game at the Ryan's Steakhouse on College Station and was in awe on tall he was.
To Alec's family my condolences
To Alec WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF
October 15, 2007
Alex, as a true Bulldog fan for life, I am deeply sadden to hear of your untimely death. May your family be assured that God makes no mistakes. Rest in peace.
October 15, 2007
We were at every game Alec played at Georgia. Alec always conducted himself as an outstanding scholar, athlete and gentleman. Our deepest sympathy to the entire Kessler family.
October 15, 2007
God Bless You! Another "DAWG" is in Heaven.
October 15, 2007
When I talk to my daughter about being an honor student, great athlete and great person Alec has always been the person I share as an example for all of the above. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Kessler family.
October 15, 2007
This was news that one could never expect and was deeply saddening. I had the pleasure to work with Alec as Georgia Basketball's sports information director during his career at UGA.

My most enjoyable days in the profession were during that time and Alec, his teammates, the coaches, managers, trainers...we were all part of the Georgia Basketball family. We had some wonderful experiences during those years.

It's been said before about Alec, but he absolutely epitomized the ultimate student-athlete. I read Coach Durham's comments about Alec's in today's AJC and couldn't help but smile as Coach talked about Alec and his study habits on road trips. We could be sitting in an airport gate at 6 a.m. waiting on our flight, we were all half asleep and there was Al with a book open.

He worked so hard in everything he did and that's why he was an award-winning scholar-athlete and a first round NBA draft pick. How many players can say they have achieved both of those? Alec was first-class in everything he did.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Rhea, their two sons and the entire Kessler family.

The Reilly Family
October 15, 2007
I will never forget how Alec changed himself from a scrawny freshman into a chiseled student athlete in one year; and how he never rested on his laurels but competed on and off the court to the best of his abilities.
October 15, 2007
Alex always was and always will be a "Damn Good Dawg!". With deepest sympathy from loyal Bulldog basketball fans everywhere who loved to watch Alex play.
October 15, 2007
Big Al, you were the best! I will always remember the great times we had on and off the court. Alec was the model student-athlete and one that we all wanted to be like. One of my most memorable times came last year when we were able to honor Alec before the Tennessee game in front of his children, father and brother Chad. He was able to also see the new Coliseum Practice Facility and soak in what he and his brother helped lay the groundwork for. Alec, you will be missed by me, your teammates, coaches and fans. Rhea, Christopher, Nicholas and the Kessler family, you are all in our thoughts and prayers.
October 15, 2007
I moved to Roswell in 1984 after graduating high school in MS. I got to be friends with some of the guys at RHS because I lifted in their gym and ran on the track. Alec was one of the first guys I became friends with. He was such a great guy, always ready with a smile and an encouraging comment.

I distinctly remember the last time I saw him, at UGA. I hadn't seen him in awhile, and he had since become a big star at the school. I was just leaving a fraternity event and I bumped into him on the street. Alex recognized me immediately and was as friendly and amiable as he was when he was in HS. There was nothing pretentious about him at all.

Today, I am stunned by the news of his death, and my prayers are with his family and friends as they deal with this tragic loss.
October 15, 2007
I had the good fortune of being Alec's team mate for one year. He was the hardest working person I had met to that point and since. He accepted everyone and always had a smile on his face. I am a better person for knowing Alec.
October 15, 2007
You do not get any better than Chad and Alec Kessler. I am sorry this has happened to such a great person and family. Once again I am sorry.
October 15, 2007
Father we entrust our brother Alec to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Alec in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.
October 15, 2007
Unbelievable. This news is so sad and individuals like Alec are very rare. I am lucky to have come across this one. God Bless.
October 15, 2007
I was a basketball player at Roswell High and was fortunate to get to know Alec. He is remembered for being such a genuine person, even more so than for his playing abilities.

My prayers go out to the Kessler family. May you find peace in remembering all of the special times you shared within the quiet of your family.
October 15, 2007
If I had a son I'd want him to be a clone of Alec. The PERFECT DAWG !!!
Only the good die young..Rest in Peace..

My thoughts and prayers go out to Rhea,Christopher and Nicholas in this difficult time. I had the pleasure of knowing Alec and his family when I cared for newborn Christopher as his nurse. He will be missed...

Alec will be remembered as towering man in the halls of Roswell High School, he graduated a year ahead of me and like many others at RHS, I was very happy that he was going UGA so we could continue to follow him and cheer for one of our own. Alec was one-in-a-million who personified character as an exemplarily athlete, student and person. I enjoyed watching his collegiate career and he brought great excitement to the Bulldog Nation. To see him achieve even higher levels in his professional realms after college was amazing. I hope your family takes comfort in the fact that he touched many lives, both on and off the basketball court. God Bless.

October 15, 2007
My husband, Jody Patton, played basketball with Alec at Georgia. I have heard so many stories over the years, and they all included how unbelievably brilliant and talented Alec was. We sat with Alec a few months ago at a dinner for Hugh Durham. We will always be thankful we had one last chance to laugh together!
Our prayers our with your family.

I just want to send my condolences to the Kessler family on their terrible loss. I am a huge Heat fan and I also went to College at Emory at the same time that Alec was in Medical School. I always thought it was so cool seeing him on the courts at the "WOODPEC" knowing he used to play for my favorite team. He was a great basketball player and an even better person. May he rest in peace.
October 15, 2007
Alec was a great player and a very fine person besides. My deepest sympathy to the family and friends.

I played against Alec In high school when he played for Roswell and I played for North Springs. We had some great games against each other. We talked to each other during the games but it was never trash talking. I was so glad when he chose to play at Georgia. .My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May God give them peace during this difficult time.

October 15, 2007
Alec was one of the first people I met at Roswell High School when I moved there from out of state in my sr. year. He was instantly nice to this "new kid" despite him being the literal big man on campus. He was just as nice 20 years later at our 20th h.s. reunion. I'll never forget , in high school, shooting hoops with you in Biff Myers' driveway while everyone else partied inside! A great memory of a great guy. You are greatly missed Alec!

It is with shock and sadness that I learned of loss of Alec. I played against Alec when he was at Georgia and he was a hard nosed player but was a class individual. My prayers go out to his family & the Bulldog Nation.

I’ll never forget being at the Georgia Coliseum when UGA beat LSU the second time during that 1990 championship season.

At the buzzer, the students (and a few grads like me) swarmed the court & Alec Kessler was right in the middle of it all, towering over everyone & beaming. A great moment & a rare one.

Thanks for the memories & RIP, Alec.
October 14, 2007
I, like many others, am deeply saddened by the loss of this humble, talented, magnificent Bulldog. As the basketball beat writer for the Red and Black in 1990 I had the profound and cherished experience of covering Durham's Dogs in their first SEC Championship run. Alec stands out among his fine teammates as a man of true character and zeal not only for the game of basketball, but also for his academic endeavors and especially for his fellow students and the University of Georgia.

I'll never forget the time UGA beat Shaq and LSU in Athens in a thrilling game in 1990 and the students stormed the court and "took down the nets" In the locker room after the game an AJC reporter (let's not say who he was) chided the UGA students for their "foolishness" I remember Alec giving that reporter his comeuppance with a glare saying "Hey! Those are MY fellow classmates!" He made a profound impression on my that day as I realized he was truly a STUDENT/athlete.

Alec always made time for me, a young sports reporter with no experience and to this day one of my cherished possesions is a signed caricature of him hanging in our family media room. The Bulldog nation will sorely miss you. Our prayers for the Kessler family.
October 14, 2007
God Bless the Kessler family, Alec was a great person, role model, and basketball player. We will truly miss him, so keep your head up and remember the wonderful times we had with him on this earth.
October 14, 2007
My thoughts and prayers are with the Kessler family. I had the honor of knowing Alec not only as a classmate at Roswell High, but also as a great friend. He was a truly nice guy. His smile would always light up the room. He will be missed greatly. God Bless.

From your family in Arbor Springs, Newnan. Our son attended BB Camp at UGA this summer where many accolades were given to Alec. We haven't met personally, but you are definitely thought of at this point in time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

October 14, 2007
Only the good die young... He will be missed by all.
October 14, 2007
I was a huge Georgia fan growing up, and Alec Kessler was one of my favorites, both for his performance on the court and his admirable personality and accomplishments off the court. Although I ended up going to Georgia Tech and renouncing all things red and black, I'll always remember the admiration I had for Alec. RIP. You'll be missed.
October 14, 2007
It was a pleasure to watch Alec play and mature both on and off the court while at UGA. He was a great example of what it means to be a student athelete. Alec makes me proud to be a UGA almuni. I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family. My prayers are with you all. He will be greatly missed by all of his UGA family.
October 14, 2007
This is terrible news. Alec was one of the good guys, and will be missed. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I'll miss you Kess. I'll always remember the great times we had with the Heat and Panama City Beach.
You'll always be one of my Best Friends.

I grew up a Heat fan in Miami and had the pleasure to be treated by Alec when he was in med school in Atlanta. It was a great experience I'll never forget.

He was very kind and we talked for a long time. I'll always appreciate that Alec acquired tickets for me and a friend for that night's Heat-Hawks game at Atlanta's Omni.

It's tragic to lose him so soon. He seemed like a wonderful man.
October 14, 2007
May your soul rest in eternal peace! Your loved ones are in my prayers!

From an SEC and Heat fan!

I have been watching Georgia basketball for 40 seasons. My choice for the best Ga. basketball player ever is Alec Kessler.

He was a student who performed at the highest academic levels and built himself into dominant basketball player.

I was so saddened by the news of his death that it has not fully registered.
October 14, 2007
It is hard to fathom the loss this family must be feeling. May the Kessler family and his friends find peace in the wonderful life he lived.

I remember watching him play at Georgia the great year the Dawgs won the SEC Championship in 1990. I still have the commemorative t-shirt. My classmates and I knew he was special. Alec was clearly a leader on the court and went on to achieve great things. He will continue to be a good example for us all.
October 14, 2007
Thoughts and prayers go out to the Kessler family.
October 14, 2007
Alec was a great colleague. I will miss our conversations in the surgeon's lounge about our Great Danes. My heart goes out to Rhea and the boys.

Die hard Heat fan who sends her condolences to the family. You'll be missed. RIP.
October 14, 2007
Thoughts and prayer are with the Kessler family. Godbless.
October 14, 2007
I first met Alec when my older sister and him took the same math class at Roswell High. He came over to our house for study goup and I couldn't believe how tall he was, ducking his head through every doorway. He came right up to me introduced himself and shook my hand. Great individual with great compassion in people he will be sorely missed.

October 14, 2007
Shocking news. Alec was the main reason I starting wearing #33 as a kid. To this day it is my favorite number. Alec's family will be in my prayers.
October 14, 2007
This is such shocking and sad news. I was a teammate of Alec's at UGA and a better guy you will not find than Alec Kessler.

He was the kind of friend you want to have, the kind of guy you'd want your daughter to marry, and the kind of person the world needs more of.

I feel for his older brother Chad, his parents, and his wife and kids. You are going to be missed, Al.
October 14, 2007
Truly a great Bulldog and wonderful human being.Rest in peace Alec, you were a damn good dog!
October 14, 2007
I first met Alex on the basketball court at Roswell High. He was probably only 6'2" at the time and seemed to grow to 6'8" over the summer. Great ball handler and so genuine on/off the court. I last saw Alex at Roswell's 20 year high school reunion about 2 years ago. Not much had changed....always sincere and asking how I was doing and what I was doing. He cared deeply about others. Our prayers go out to the Kessler family. Very gentle spirit about Alex.
October 14, 2007
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
October 14, 2007
This news took my breath away. Many, many great memories for this basketball fan. Alec and his family are in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.
October 14, 2007
My grandfather, being a Georgia graduate, loved UGA football. But, having coached another game at Winterville High, true passion was for UGA basketball. Alec happened to play around the time my brother and I started going to games. My grandfather had gone with my dad for years, even when they were playing up where the Journalism complex is now.

Alec over the years of being a fan, was easily one of my grandfather's favorite players. He was so impressed by Mr. Kessler that he waited after one game around the team bus to get Alec's autograph.

The story goes that my grandfather didn't have anything to sign on so he used what he had, two one dollar bills. After my grandfather passed, it was revealed that he had had those dollars signed for myself and my brother which we both have to this day.

Knowing the integrity and honor of my grandfather, for him to go out of his way to get those signatures, should speak volumes about the regard he held for Mr. Kessler as a player and as a person.
October 14, 2007
The Bulldog Nation has lost a great one. Alec was a great person. Thanks for the memories. Kessler Family, you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May His peace and comfort be with you. God Bless Yall!
October 14, 2007

October 14, 2007

I was a law student when Dr. Kessler was playing for UGA. I watched him many times. God Bless him and his family.
October 14, 2007
Alec was truly a great teammate, friend and person. He will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to his family. We love you.
Sincerely,
The Cole Family
October 14, 2007
This breaks my heart. Dr. Kessler was one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. I worked across the hall from him for 2 years and never saw him without a smile or even a good morning. He cared for his patients as if they were his family. He will truly be missed in the hallway of BMP, in Pensacola, Fla. My thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate family and to his family at Southern Orthopedics. Keep his memory and his spirit alive. God Bless you Dr. Kessler and Thank you.
October 14, 2007
i too am a heat fan, having lived in Davie for 16 years...my condolances to the family and friends....LEW SCOTT, grand CAYMAN island
October 14, 2007
We have truly lost one of the great ambassadors of Georgia athletics. Alec personified the term Student-Athlete. He was an All-American on and off the court and as an alum & Georgia supporter I can't think of a better representative of our university. You'll be missed Alec and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
October 14, 2007
alec was a real inpsiration - he was a top notch student, pre-med at that, as well as an incredible athlete and i was lucky to watch him play.......i have used him as a prime example many times for why sports and college work for many kids coming out of high school and what they are capable of doing with such chances......
October 14, 2007
Shocked beyond belief. Alec gave us UGA fans so much pleasure by his play on the court, but even more pride was engendered by his being the epitome of Student-athlete.
October 14, 2007
I was fortunate to admire both Alec and Chad, and their tremendous achievements (on and off the court) through Roswell High School, UGA, and the NBA. I am shocked and saddened to hear of this news tonight. My family's thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of grief.
October 14, 2007
I first met Alec when I moved to Roswell from FL as a Junior in high school. He made me feel welcome in a very different atmosphere. Meant a lot to me. I saw him a few times in Athens when we were at school...of course at that time he was the "Big man on Campus", but he always remained grounded and focused. He will most certainly be missed. The Roswell Hornet and Bulldog Nation will always remember him.
October 14, 2007
I'll never forget that 360 layup

One of my favorite times as a sports reporter was following around that 1990 team when they shocked the world and won the SEC. Alec was a big reason that was so enjoyable because he was such class guy and an easy person to root for since he worked so hard to get where he was. I can't imagine the grief his wife and sons must feel but we all must try to remember the profoundly positive impact he made on so many people and virtually everything he encountered. My heart goes out to all in Alec's family.
October 14, 2007
I'm a huge heat fan. I wish the best for Alec's family and friends who have to go through the pain. This is an unfortunate event and hopefully everyone can stay strong and pull through this. God bless you all. R.I.P Alec Kessler.

October 14, 2007
I followed his career with the young Miami Heat and remember him as a guy you couldn't help but like.
The world needs more like him.
October 14, 2007
My buddy Noah and I had the task of double teaming Alec during intense pickup games at the Northside Y in Buckhead. Alec was a clean player - no rough fouls - no bad language - no talking at all - just doing his business. I remember watching Frank Thomas - the pro baseball player, trying to guard Alec as well. What a run that was.
I will tell the motivating story of his academic, athletic, professional, and family accomplishments to many.
May God Bless.
October 14, 2007
Such shocking and sad news. I was a teammate of Alec's on the UGA Basketball team and he was the kind of friend you wanted to have, the kind of guy you wanted your daughter to marry, the kind of guy that the world could use a thousand more just like.

They don't come any better than Alec Kessler. You'll be missed, Al.
October 14, 2007
I remember seeing him around campus in the 80s..what a presence he was both in person and in spirit..
October 14, 2007
the bulldog nation has lost a great person and a great leader
October 14, 2007
Having spent a little time with Alec and Gary Usina during my freshman year at UGA, I am saddened to hear of the loss. Alec was a class act from the day he set foot on campus until he left. The entire Kessler family is being prayed for at our home.
October 14, 2007
I did not know Alec Kessler personally, but I went to UGA a few years after he left and had some connections to the basketball team there. I can say that everyone I knew who did know Alec had an incredible respect for him as a player, a student and a person. His talent, work ethic, intelligence and character had become legendary within just a couple years after his departure. It is obvious that those qualities allowed him to continue touching lives as a husband, father, doctor and friend. My prayers go out to his wife and two sons. I know he will be missed.
October 14, 2007
The Bulldog Nation mourns the passing of a good bulldog. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all family and friends.
October 14, 2007
I loved watching him compete for UGA and I was saddened to hear of his passing. May God Bless his family.
October 14, 2007
To the Kessler family:

I had the privilege of getting to know Alec in 1986-87. We knew a few of the same people and got to know each other just a little bit.

The thing I remember most about Alec were two things. One, even though he was a "big man on campus" he treated others as we all would want to be treated. Second, he put his education FIRST.

I am very sorry for your loss.

God bless you all.
October 14, 2007
An outstanding athlete and a superior student, he led the class of 1990. Defining the term Big Man on Campus in skill, knowledge and leadership, he will be missed. Thanks for making my UGA years memorable.

October 14, 2007
Thanks for your service to your state and the game and your family
October 14, 2007
Thanks for the memories Alec. A great man and a reminder of what a student athlete is supposed to be
October 14, 2007
A hero of mine when I was young. My first memories of University of Georgia basketball are of Alec Kessler. A childhood hero of mine has passed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
October 14, 2007
God Bless the Kessler family, Alec was a great role model that every one would want for their own children. I enjoyed his playing days at UGA, but most impressed with his focus and priorities after athletics.
