For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for his name by ministering and continuing to minister to the holy ones (Hebrews 6:10). Alicia will never be forgotten for all the work done for the Acting community and especially those encouraged and inspired in this wonderful persons' care. May God continue to strengthen your family in these “times hard to deal with” (2Tim 3:1), especially without a beloved one such as Alicia Rhett.

Alicia and I worked together at Bradham Advertising in the late 60s. The agency was at 134 Meeting St.in an old building. She would wear her hat and white gloves to work every day. Alicia also did a pastel portrait of both our daughters in the 70s. I was so fortunate to know her.

Miss Rhett was a dear family friend and all the female members of the family had the pleasure of sitting for her for our portraits. All in a time that feels long ago when downtown Charleston was quieter and life was a little slower and gracious. Miss Rhett was a sharp, humorous, talented lady and I am so lucky to have known her. We watch Gone With the Wind every year and enjoy her but my memories are more personal and I treasure mama's portrait all the more now as well as mine.

Most visitors here apparently don't know that the always beautiful and graceful Alicia Rhett never married and lived with her mother on Tradd Street in downtown Charleston until moving to the Bishop Gadsden Home.

She was as pretty at age 95 as she was in Gone with the Wind, age 18.

She lived on Tradd St. three doors east of Pete & Harry's Grocery that was on the corner of Meeting St.

Like any good Charlestonian, she never painted her stucco house, which maintained its original, very old, slightly pink color -- untouched by modern hands.

And like any good member of St. Philips Episcopal Church, she'll be buried there -- a very small and ancient cemetery worth visiting.

Like my father (also buried there), many good Charlestonians had Alicia paint or draw portraits of at least one family member -- considered treasures.

She famously drove her maroon Ford Fairlane v e r y s l o w l y, and famously posted next to her garage door a sign uncannily resembling an official City of Charleston "Streets & Sidewalks" sign -- "Don't even THINK of parking here" -- that hundreds of Charlestonians have since copied. She did not lack a sense of humor.

I grew up around the corner from Miss Rhett, who was always kind to me, and in her old age, at the Bishop Gadsden Home, always smiled and greeted me with great courtesy as do all the grand ladies of her era -- the depression era, when Charleston was down and out. She also knew hard times.

And I too, named my daughter Alicia.

I will miss this lady who was beautiful in many, many ways.

-- Jock Stender, Charleston
(lived at 64 Church St.)

To the family of Miss Rhett, my sincere thoughts and prayers. She was such an interesting person. I didn't know her very well as I only saw her once or twice a year when I helped her with her tax returns. She had such a calming presence. Her house was very interesting too and she showed me alot of the portraits she had created. This southern belle will be missed.

I was named after Ms. Rhett at a time when the name "Alicia" was not popular and virtually unheard of in the Midwest. My mother loved the movie and particularly the character and Ms. Rhett's beauty. It seems she had a long, enjoyable and productive life. May she rest in peace.
