Barbara and I were close friends when we both lived in Germany. Although our lives took very different paths, I will always remember her with fondness. What a great woman! To Peter and Elizabeth, I am so sorry for your loss. Barbara. Almerico, Port Angeles, Wa.

I will so miss Dr. Mertz. I have loved everyone of her books and continue to re-read them. She taught me so much about places I may never get to see but somehow feel I have.
October 03, 2013
Thank you, Barbara, for taking me places and including me in adventures that I could never otherwise experience. I can't imagine life without new adventures for Amelia, Vicky and Kirby. The modern Gothic novel has lost its greatest contributor.

I discovered Barbara's books while attending the University of Chicago back in the 80's and having a difficult year. Amelia Peabody brought laughter, light, and enthusiasm to my life at a very hard time. I own every single book written by Barbara and I read them over and over. She created characters and worlds that were so rich that I'd come out of each book smiling and reinvigorated. I am so terribly, terribly sorry for the loss her family must be feeling. Please know that she brought joy and inspired with every reading of her books. My deepest condolences.

Barbara Mertz (Elizabeth Peters) opened up places that I have never been and will probably never go. I found myself wanting to ride down the Nile in a Dyhabiya. I learned so much about Egypt that I would have never known. I started studying about Egypt, wanting to know more. I fell in love with Amelia Peabody, Emerson and her whole family. I have listened to them over again, as they were read by Barbara Rosenblatt, they became friends. When i finished all of them I missed them. I will miss more of her wonderful tales of Amelia's family. It is as if part of my family has died. Thank you for all the love, humor, excitement and happiness that was on every track of each recording. You will be missed so much. "Each year another dead body".
September 06, 2013
I will miss her unique style and riveting stories. I so glad that I can read her over and over again and still be held by the spells that only she could weave!
September 05, 2013
I'm so very sad to hear that the wonderful Barbara Mertz has passed away. I have every one of her books and reread them often.
I once mailed her a little book on cats and she replyed, thanking me and saying "One can never have too many books about cats."
My deepest condolences to her family and dear friends.
And now I believe I'll have a glass of the genial beverage and reflect on the life of an amazing woman.

I have read and reread most of Ms Mertz's books that I have lost count. Vicki Bliss, Jacqueline Kirby and other of her protagonists are like old friends. I will miss looking forward to her next novel. My deepest sympathies to her family.
August 21, 2013
I started reading Barbara's books in 1972. I started, of course, with her thrillers, "Ammie, come home" and "The Crying Child". I don't know how many times I've read them but they still have the power to keep me awake on an all-nighter when nothing else will!
I have (literally) dozens of her books, under Michaels and Peters, on my bookshelves. None of that electronic stuff for me! I really love Jacqueline Kirby, too.
I met Barbara at a book signing at Murder by the Book in Denver, CO. She was charming and funny and I will always think of her with a smile.
Thank you for sharing her with us for all these years.

Dear Family,
I feel as though you are part of my family. I discovered your mother's books years ago and spent many wonderful hours within the pages of those books. I was always waiting for the next Amelia & Emerson book to hit the shelves. She will be greatly missed. I am glad her words still live on in my library.

I pray that you are comforted and the peace of the Lord will be with you during this time.

As a young girl I loved all things Egypt, and it was the Amelia Peabody series that I began in my 30s that rekindled that love and joy. By then I was a trained historian who appreciated the scholarly turn of mind Barbara Mertz brought to her work. When I found out she had studied at the University of Chicago I understood at once why her books read like history as much as like fiction. I am confident Anubis has guided her through the Weighing of the Heart and the scales have balanced.
August 20, 2013
Even though I am deeply saddened to hear of Ms. Metz passing, it does sound like she lived life to the fullest. I love her work and re read her books frequently.
August 17, 2013

Deeply saddened to hear of Barbara's passing. I love her books and was hoping to hear of a new publication later this year since I heard that one was possibly in the works. My heart and prayers go out to her family and many friends who will miss her.

August 12, 2013
What sad news. My deepest sympathy to Mrs Mertz' family and friends. I have read and treasured her stories and characters for years. Each year, I allow myself the joy of reading Amelia's series straight through. I understand and appreciate her decision to leave them still in Egypt. Abdullah's death was bad enough. I also loved when she appeared in Laughter of Dead Kings in search of more Emerson journals. What a lady. I wish I had known her
August 12, 2013
Barbara is my favorite author and has been for years. Her wit and humor shines through her writing, especially in the Amelia books. She piqued my interest in Egypt and gave me a lifelong curiosity about ancient cultures. How we will all miss her!! RIP
August 11, 2013
I met Barbara in Washington when she had just published the "compendium". What a charming, funny speaker. The entire audience was spellbound as she told how she wrote and how she had developed Amelia and family as characters. I will love her books forever. My heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
August 11, 2013
I am saddened to hear of the loss of one of the greatest mystery writers. She was truly a talented woman with an incredible life. May God Bless her family.
August 11, 2013
My deepest sympathy to the family of Barbara Mertz. As a teenager I became enamored of Barbara Michaels' books, introducing them to my Mom and sister. All three of us derived shivers and great enjoyment from her hauntings! In later years my youngest daughter, then 12, and I spent a wonderful summer reading every Peters book we could find. She is 24 and we talk about them still! Three generations of my family enjoyed the worlds Ms. Mertz created. I know we will return to them again and again. After all the adventures she created in this lifetime, may Barbara be off to new adventures of her own! Godspeed and thank you!
August 10, 2013
In the summer of 1998, my daughter's position as a travel agent allowed us to take part in a FAM trip with GATE 1 to Egypt. Following the remarkable trip, a Westminster librarian suggested that I read Elizabeth Peter's books, and all were read in the years that followed. My first book on memoir writing (Getting Hooked on Memoirs) contains one memoir titled "The Pyramids Led Me To Elizabeth Peters."
I corresponded with Barbara a half dozen times over the past ten years, and Barbara responded to most with handwritten notes. I was delighted that Hood College in my home town of Frederick awarded her an honorary degree, and I found it hard to believe that her lovely country home in Libertytown was only a half-hour drive from my Westminster home.
Barbara will be missed and never forgotten.
August 10, 2013
My condolences to her family for losing such a wonderful lady. She was such a great story teller . Her books are amazing . I now regret not writing to her to tell how much I have enjoyed her books. Her books helped me so much after my husband passed away. I have all her books and have read them over and over.
August 10, 2013
My most sincere sympathy and condolences to her family and friends.
August 10, 2013
The talented Ms. Mertz brought me so much pleasure and enjoyment through the years with her books, characters, and locations. Three generations of my family have enjoyed her books - my grandmother introduced me and I, in turn, introduced my Dad to her books. My world loses some of its brilliance knowing that she is no longer in it. I shall miss her....
August 10, 2013
Your Amelia Peabody books were my favorites for years. RIP you will be missed. Condolences to your family.
August 09, 2013
My sympathies to Mrs. Mertz's family and staff. She was, without a doubt, my favorite author. I first "met" her in Ammie, Come Home. Then a co-worker introduced me to the Amelia Peabody books and I never looked back. I got to meet her and hear her speak at the Hershey Library in Hershey, Pa years ago. She was so popular, the library had to turn people away! She was delightful, personable, and asked us (the audience members) what we'd like to read in the next books. I remember crying in public when I was reading the part of one book where Abdullah was killed. I couldn't believe she did that, but then I enjoyed Amelia's meetings with him in her dreams. Nice touch there. I kept looking for another book in the series, but now I'll just have to reread them and imagine where she would have gone next. Rest in peace, Barbara, Amelia, Emerson, Ramses, and all the characters I've loved over the years.
August 09, 2013

August 09, 2013
Barbara Mertz is hands down my favorite author of all time. I simply love and adore 'Amelia Peabody' I was planning a driving trip from LA to Ohio to see her once when she was going to appear at a museum and talk like she was Amelia. However a very early and freak blizzard stopped that trip so I never got to meet her or get my set of First Editions of every single one of the Amerlia Peabody series signed by her. I will miss both Barbara and Amelia as much as I would a very beloved family member. I am sitting her crying right now as I have discovered our great loss. And her passing is a very great loss to the reading world and to all lovers of anything do do with Ancient Egypt as I have since I was a very small child. My heart goes out to her beloved children!
August 09, 2013
Blessings on you, MPM. Thank you for countless hours of entertainment; I always learned something new with your books. I'm sure Abdullah and Bastet are watching over you now....
