Thanks Ben and Frances Hooks for the many doors and eyes you opened. Thank you for your dignity and endless faith in the One God and our people, especially young people.
Mrs. Hooks was employed at
Carver HS in south Memphis when I was in school. I would become a lawyer, and have always been grateful to the Hooks, Ben and Frances.

We Walk This Way But Once
We walk this way but once and we must make it count. It is no mystery to us that Benjamin Hooks made his presence here on earth count. It was a privilege to get to know Benjamin Hooks when I was child. As a member of the youth department of the NAACP we sat in AWE of the courageous men and women that were our fearless leaders.
To the family of Dr. Hooks we offer our sincere gratitude to you for allowing us to share your loved one over the years. Dr. Benjamin Hooks will forever reign as a true American Hero to us all. He is now reunited with his loved ones and with those other warriors that have gone on before. I am so grateful that Dr. Hooks lived a long life and was able to enjoy some of the fruits of his labor as well as the fruits of the labor of his renowned predecessors.
We thank God for Dr. Hooks and in his honor we will march on keeping the dream alive until we are all reunited in that, “Sweet Bye and Bye”; where everyday will be Sunday and Sabbath will have no end. We will meet him again somewhere up there in the air, but we know not when for we have miles yet to travel before we sleep and until then we will make our life here on earth count knowing that we to only walk this way once.

To the Family and Friends of Benjamin Hooks,

I am so sorry for the loss of such a family treasure like Mr.Hooks. At a difficult time like this, may you all draw on the many wonderful memories he must have made over the years.

Psalms 34:18-"God is near to those who are broken at heart.."

You can feel that Death can leave a heartache that nothing can heal, just know that Love can leave a memory that no one can steal.

The Grant Family
April 22, 2010
My condolences go out to the surviving family members and close friends of Mr. Benjamin Hooks.

No doubt, his championship of the poor, underprivileged, as well as minorities made you all extremely proud.

I hope that it will bring you a measure of comfort and joy to know that God extends a ressurrection hope for those dear and cherished ones who have fallen asleep in death.

Not just a bringing back to life in the conditions of injustice we face today, but a bringing back to life in a world where no partiality will be seen and everyone will have their needs met - physical, spirtual, mentally, and emotionally. (John 5:28, 29, Rev. 21:3,4)

This is a promise we can put stock in since God's word promises us - "And they will actually sit, each one under his vine and under his fig tree, and there will be no one makinge them tremble; for the very mouth of Jehovah of armies has spoken it." - Micah 4:4

I just want the Hooks family to know we love them and pray for MRs. Hooks and the days to come. Rev. Hooks was more to me than a great brillant speaker and great fighter for civil rights and so many other accomplishments. But to me was just a simple down to earth man that had the Love of God in him and he loved to share God with whom ever he met. He was like a quiet storm that came alive through the power of God. I was baptized by Rev. Hooks and quided in this spiritual walk at an early age. He was an humble passionate man who knew from which his power and strength came from. He had a strong loving supportive help in Mrs. Hooks as he walked the path God set before him. My mom who gone on before him Mrs. Doris Kennedy always admire his ability to walk and talk to all people on any level and show the love of God to all. She Said that is how he is able to do all the things he does because God was always put first. He was like a dad to me and he made a great impact on my life as a child and an adult. My daughter Christna called her God Daddy for life. Most of all out of all of his accomplisments he was most proud of beinng a child of God being called by God to carry the word to all nations. My family will never forget him.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

To the family of Mr Hooks,

Please accept my sincere condolences for your lost. Many wonder 'What happens to us when we die?' Perhaps you have too. Of course, God's Word the bible tells us exactly what happens at Ecclesiates 9:5. But what does this mean? Find out at Psalm 146:3,4.

Again, my deepest simpathy.

Dear Hooks Family,
I will remember Dr. Hooks fondly as I called him Uncle Ben when he was in the home of my parents, Dr. R. Q. & Ethyl Venson during the Cotton Makers Jubilee years of glory. I remember my dad (Dr. Venson) always cooking his favorite New Orleans seafood gumbo. They enjoyed talking about the future of Memphis and listening to each other war stories. Dr. Hooks will be missed but his legacy will continue in the struggles of God's people. May we continue to pick-up the banner he so proudly left for us to stand with dignity. My prayers are with the family as they go through this grief process and rejoice in the Lord and reflect your wonderful memories.
Respectfully submitted,

To the Hooks family, the Gipson family extends heart-felt sympathies for your lost. As a child attending Greater New Mt. Moriah, I would be in awe of Dr. Hooks' sermons. As my daughter and I was in line paying our last respects, I stated to her that this was a great man and I wish that you could have heard him speak. During his tenure as our minister, I was able to get up close and personal with some of the greatest civil right activist of our time. He will truly be missed and somewhere along the breezes you can hear his voice in the echos of our minds.
April 20, 2010
May the ancestors welcome a new ancestor who stood for all of us.
April 20, 2010
My prayers are with you and your family. I had the pleasure of meeting Bro. Hooks while stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY in '95-'98; when one hundred and forty one Masons received their Royal & Select Masters degree in the York Rite Masonry; at Memphis. Prior to that time, he was already an inspirational figure in my home, church and community. His leadership and candor will forever remain instilled into our lives, as he remained steadfast in all of his endeavors. He will be missed as a stalworth in civil rights, but also, as a statuesque leader in Prince Hall Masonry in Tennessee and the entire world. May T.G.A.O.T.U. continue to keep you and watch over you during this time. You grieve not alone, the world grieve with you.

April 20, 2010
To Frances, Family and Friends of Rev. Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks,
I was saddened to learn of the death of Brother (re: Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.) Rev. Dr. Hooks. He is now in Omega Chapter; however, I am rejoicing in the fact that I had the great pleasure of being in his presence on several occasions. I had the distinct honor of introducing him to a 3,000 person audience during a Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration at the University of Michigan. I served as President of the Ypsilanti-Willow Run Branch (MI) of the NAACP during his tenure as President and Executive Secretary of the NAACP and was inspired by his leadership and programs that started during his administration. To me the greatest innovation was the adoption of a concept of the late Vernon Jarrett which became the NAACP’s Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) program. Under ACT-SO thousands of high school students of African descent have been and are encouraged to supplement their high school studies through a cultural enhancement agenda and academic competition that awards them in the same manner as their peers in athletics.
His works and the products of his efforts will live on into perpetuity and have a beneficial effect on millions of African-Americans, other citizens and the United States of America.
April 20, 2010
Rev. Benjamin Hooks was a GREAT MAN. I
will forever remember him as a soldier for justice and righteousness.
April 20, 2010
Dr. Benjamin Hooks was a very powerful and great man. He worked his entire life towards the betterment of people - not just black people, but people. He and the likes of him are diamonds forever shining in our hearts and minds. Rest in peace Dr. Hooks. My sympathy and prayers go to his wonderful family.

Benjamin Hooks was indeed a wonderful man, with the highest level of class and the greatest personality I've ever was proud to know.

His great power, in the civil rights moment was what Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers had to break the color barrier in professional baseball. After that, opens started to open wide for the black man in America.
April 20, 2010
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
April 20, 2010
To the family-take comfort in knowing that he is resting at home and
one day we will see him again. In the meantime keep looking unto
him who is able to do all things well!!! Debra V. Edwards-Hou.TX.
April 20, 2010
The doors opened by Dr. Hooks will remain open for others to walk through. The positions that he championed will remain at ecclesiastic levels.
The footprints that he made toward living a good life will forever grow larger.

My life will forever be enhanced because Dr. Hooks took the time to challenge me on many different issues. The FCC is a stronger institution because of his vision. The NAACP was enlarged through his strength and determination. And this Country is a better place in which to live because Dr. Hooks passed through all of our lives with his legacy for justice, fairness, mentorship, and a persona that always injected a simplistic approach to complicated issues. Therefore, (my fraternity Brother) the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Hooks, may you rest in eternal peace knowing that you did GOD's work -- and did it very well.

I have lost a great friend, and America has lost a great man, who changed our lives in one way or another, even those that don't know that he did.

I remember never seeing him waving his hands in the air or yelling from the top of his voice. God knows he had that right! Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks will be known for many things--like an ordained Baptist minister, a lawyer, the executive director of The NAACP, a dominate figure in The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, his work with corporate America investing in the African American communities across the nation. Mr. Hooks might also be remembered for his work on the FCC. Many might remember him for his work with baseball in getting minorities hired in upper management. I choose to remember Benjamin Hooks an unwavering soldier for Civil Rights who fought with so much force in his quiet way. His demeanor may have been as softly as he spoke, but Mr. Hooks fought his battles with vigor. Truly he walked with a big stick and he used it to strike down injustices in all aspects of life. Like The Consolers said in the song of old "May The Work I've Done Speak For Me." His work was plentififul..His battle fierce...His list of accomplishments long. Rest on great warrior.

To Mrs. Frances Hooks and the family of Rev. Dr. Benjamin Hooks. I am taken back by Dr. Hooks' passing. We visited briefly during the NAACP's 100 year celebration in NYC and I guess I expected him to live on forever. Though he is gone from sight, he will continue to live in our hearts and we will respectfully acknowledge the tremendous work he did during his lifetime. What an inspiration he was. I can still hear him preaching and stirring up the crowd! During his tenure as Executive Director, I worked under his leadership as the Director of the Youth & College Division in Region I (San Francisco). My thoughts and prayers are with you during these difficult times. We have truly lost a giant.

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Hooks' passing. When you were the Guidance Counselor at Carver High, Dr. Hooks delivered such a stirring and powerful Baccalaureate Sermon to the Class of 65. I still have the program with notes on important points that were given. He was a "GIANT" and will be missed.

You have my deepest sympathy during your time of bereavement. May God be with you and give you comfort, peace, strength, and understanding.

You remain in my prayers.

I was stunned and deeply saddened by the news report today, announcing the demise of Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks. I had the privilege of meeting and interacting on many occasions with Dr. & Mrs. Frances Hooks, while employed with the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights; and found them both to be very loving, warm and humble. Dr. Hooks would laugh (heartedly) while telling us of being literally "run" out of Memphis as a young man; and I marveled at his resilience and dedication to being of service to mankind. He and his wife exemplified "true love" and my Prayers are with Ms. Frances and the Hooks Family during this period of bereavement. However, I sincerely believe he is smiling down on you and the rest of this world from Heaven on high! Dr. Hooks, May you rest in well-deserved Peace and experience even greater Joy, "for all the good that you have done". This world and its' "peoples" were enriched by the life you led!! Thank you God for blessing us with this Great Man who so graciously embodied Your Spirit and Your purpose.

Among the many titles that Dr. B.L. Hooks held was the title of Supreme Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias.

The Order was founded February 19, 1864. The first Black Pythian lodge was organized in Vicksburg, Mississippi, April 1880. Pythianism represents a human ideal built upon Americanism, Patriotism and the Brotherhood of man. Pythianism teaches, preaches and practices the three cardinal principles of, FRIENDSHIP, CHARITY AND BENEVOLENCE, but more that this, it teaches the Fatherhood of God, love of Country, obedience to law, purity of the Home, obligations of clean citizenship and man'’ duty to man.

Dr. Hooks will be greatly missed by the Pythian Family and all that knew and loved him. We are asking God to bless the family with courage to bear the sorrow that we all feel.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

You may not remember me, but I was a part of a black and white young people's group that met at your and Dr. Hook's home on South Parkway in the 1960s and early 1970s, after the King assasination. I have always cherished that association.
We met once again many years later when you and Dr. Hooks were in Baltimore. I was a young reporter then. Dr. Hooks was running the NAACP.

I first met Dr. Hooks as a younger man in the year 1978. He was our Black History Month Guest Speaker at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. I went to pick him up at the Rochester Airport. He was very knowledgable and quite impressive. He had just left the FCC and went on head the National NAACP. His lectures at Luther College were great! I can still picture him and here his words; in that cool Southern tone, he referenced the words and works of the great 16th Century Theologian Martin Luther. I have always had a great respect for early pioneers such as Dr. Hooks, and that is why I pen this small epitaph; "may God bless his soul, and might he rest peace", Amen.

Dr Hooks was a great American and Civil Rights Leader, I remember him as my Commencement speaker at Tennessee State University in June 1973. His inspiration has taken me a long way in my life since. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of grief. May God continue to bless his family
