Bartlett,
My thoughts have been with you and your family. Losing a parent is extremely difficult. I wish you comfort and strength (but not too much strength, it is important to lean on people) over the next year and beyond. It has been little more than a year since my Dad died, and of course the heartache continues. It can be helpful to talk with others who have experienced a similar loss. If you ever want or need to reconnect, I am here.

I was a friend and fellow student of Bernadine in grammar school. I will remember her and her family in my prayers. Rest in Peace, Bernadine.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Bernadine, my mentor for 4 years at Hopkins when I was an intern on the Osler medical service and then a fellow in Cardiology. I worked diligently in her lab which she ran with pride. She was such a good role model for women training at Hopkins. She had a passion for science and a passion for patient care. She was a feminist with style and flare. I have cherished my memories of her for many years and will continue to emulate her.
My thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those touched by her life.

I appreciate everything Dr. Bernadine Healy did for the autism community. She was a true hero and a wonderful spokesperson. It's truly a huge loss for our community...and in all of the other aspects that she helped with immensely (red cross, women's health, etc.). She will be missed.

A Role Model, Leader, Humanitarian and Champion of Medical Research

The research community will mourn the tragic loss of Bernadine Healy, a role model for all clinical researchers worldwide, a leader for women in academic medicine and science, and a champion of clinical and translational research for the benefit of mankind.

I will never forget my first exposure to Dr. Healy during my clinical research fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital between 1976 and 1979. I was struck by her dynamic personality, brilliant and innovative ideas, her sincerity, vitality, dedication and passion for research, and leadership qualities. She developed early concepts of infarct expansion and ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction through clinico-pathologic and clinical studies. These studies not only inspired me personally but also several other colleagues into a lifetime of studies on cardiac remodeling. One stunning characteristic was her unique ability to analyze, integrate and synthesize research data rapidly and help to produce the final abstracts and manuscripts with novel concepts all within days.

It was my distinct honor and privilege to work with Dr. Healy and collaborate on several early research publications.

I have followed her subsequent career during her leadership roles as Director of the White House office of Science and Policy, Director of the National Institutes of Health, Dean of Medicine at Ohio State University, Member of the Advisers of the President's Council on Science and Technology, President of the American Heart Association, and later as CEO of the American Red Cross.

She battled cancer with her typical fearless courage. She will be a legendary figure in the annals of medical science.

We are saddened by the tragic loss and convey our heart felt condolences to her family members.

My most sincere condolences to Dr. Healy's family. Dr. Healy was truly a heroine to many of us in the autism community. I admired her courage to do and say what was right instead of what was easy. It is a rare quality in public office.
I am so sorry to hear that she is gone, but I know that she will be remembered for a very long time. All my best wishes and prayers.

The vaccine injured community has lost one of it's most heroic advocates. I'm sure she did all she could and she certainly did a great deal more than most. And from some of the other things I've read it sounds like the world's lost a very good person, someone who didn't shy from speaking the unpopular or inconvenient truths. She'll be missed.
August 10, 2011
My condolences to Dr Healy's family. She was a brave & outstanding woman. May we all continue her legacy.

What a tremendous loss. Dr Healy was a pioneer in medicine, womens rights, and philanthropy. She is a huge inspiration for many.
I especially want to thank her for leading the charge for families living with autism and having science define answers. She will be missed.

Dr. Bernadine Healy's honesty and compassion meant a great deal to me. I am a mother of a child who regressed into autism after vaccination. Dr. Healy spoke with children's health and best interest in mind, and with her knowledge, experience, and creditials her words carry great influence. God Bless her for her life's work, but even more for her compassion for our special children and all humanity.
August 09, 2011
Thank you Dr Healy for your support on more research regarding vaccines and autism. You were a blessing to so many of us. I hope it provides some comfort to your family knowing how your message will continue to help so many.
August 09, 2011
One knew at Harvard Medical School in the late 1960s that she had the strength to make changes that count and the brains to make it happen. Later at Johns Hopkins these traits were recognized but I will remember that impish smile when she was right about something, forever.
August 09, 2011
Thank you Dr. Healy for your common sense approach to helping those most in need. Your calls for an honest debate on autism causation are the most salient arguments I have ever heard on the subject. You will be greatly missed.

August 09, 2011
Thank you Dr. Healy for the many advancements in public health you championed. Thank you, particularly, for your powerful interview with CBS re vaccines and autism, the truths you courageously stated that the question has not been answered and that researchers should not turn their backs out of fear of what they may find. You are greatly missed!
August 09, 2011
Thank you Dr. Healy for providing hope to parents that someone was listening to us. You provided a balanced view on what needed to be done in regards to our children with autism. Thank you for speaking up when so few had the courage to do so. Cheryl

Thank you, Dr. Healy for all that you did for medicine, our nation, and the world. My mother, Judy (Turner) Challgren, who passed away almost 2 years ago, always talked about what an amazing woman you were. You worked one summer together in Lake Placid, NY in the mid-1960's. She was so thrilled to see you on the news one night in 1991, because she was able to see you had accomplished what you had told her you were out to do.
My condolences to Bernadine's family. Rest in splendor, Dr. Healy.
