May 11, 2010
My husband loved Billy and is so strange that his birthday was in May 1952 and he died in Dec 2008. Billy was born in 06-1952 and died in 01-09. Look at the one month difference in birthdays and when they died. I just think it means something or it does to me. Love you Billy.
April 21, 2010
I saw Billy play at church and with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Whether playing southern rock or Christian rock, Billy played with passion. His contribution is made, but he will still be missed. May he rest in Peace and in the arms of the Savior, Jesus Christ.

September 01, 2009
Billy was one of the greatest Piano players who ever lived. I regret not signing this book sooner, but it was actually Hard to do, it is So sad that Billy has joined SO many who have left us here to go on with the rest of our time here in this life. So many friends and especially musicians have left us way too soon, for our sakes at least, But I am sure that in heaven there Is no sadness for them. Being an old musician myself, I have seen too many good people leave us so young. Billy was to me just a very hard one to let go and realize that only memories of the Wonderful music he gave this world remains with us...
August 21, 2009
For one of my earliest icons, whose music has only grown more "classic" and inspirational over the years-you will be sorely missed in Mississippi and the entire world--Although you are gone way too soon, your genius is immortal.
August 15, 2009
rest in peace billy........ tim wade [cleveland, tn.]
August 14, 2009
I met Billy Powell in Biloxi, Ms at the Hard Rock Casino where they did a show last year. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met. I approached him to sign one of our Crap table layouts and he said he was honored to be asked and asked for a Sharpie marker. I talked to him a bit telling him how much I loved their music and he talked to me like he knew me for years. He also gave me a mother of pearl guitar pick with a piano and his name on it. I will keep it forever. He was just genuine and down to earth, very sad to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace and forever play his piano in Heaven.
August 12, 2009

Billy, where have the years gone. I was a young man in the Navy when the plane went down. We all held our breath and shed our tears for Ronnie, Steve, Cassie & Dean. The Lord gave you so many more years to become a blessing to everyone and to share such an incredible gift on the Keyboards. There would be no FreeBird without you my friend, you gave that incredible song to us along with Ronnie. The lights have dimmed and the stage is now emtpy. Our hearts are heavy with sadness and grief. Thank you for all the years Billy, Ill never forget you. May God Bless your family.
May 08, 2009
Billy's piano solo in 'I Know A Little' was my introduction to Skynrd.. been a fan ever since. My prayers go out to Billy's family and the band.......

The first time I heard you play the piano I was awestruck. You were amazing. I had never heard anything so beautiful before. It was like the music just flowed thru your body out your fingertips. You inspired me to play the piano better. Thank you for your gift of music that you shared with each one of us. I know you will be rockin the heavens now! We will miss you! Its so sad that God decided to take you home so early! My thoughts and prayers are with your family. God will surely bless you as you were such a inspiration to all of us.

April 19, 2009
The thoughts and words expressed are overwhelming and heart felt, what can you add. Skynyrd has been a part of my life from the first time I saw them. Oct.15,1977 Hollywood Sportatorium, Miami, Fl. Just five days before the music died. I remember they started the show with "What's Your Name", after that Ronnie said "Hey, ya'll are the first to hear our new album". You never forget the piano opening to "FreeBird". We grieve for billy's family. We grieve for ourselves for the feeling of losing a friend. My thoughts are also with Gary, Johnny and the Band. Keep the music comming.
RIP Billy
April 17, 2009
I BELIEVE YOU ARE THE BEST SOUTHERN ROCK AND ROLL PIANIST THAT EVER LIVED.YOU GAVE US A LIFE TIME OF MUSIC WITH YOUR FINGERS. YOUR TALENT IS LIKE NO OTHER. WE WILL SURELY MISS YOU. I HAD THE PRIVILAGE OF SEEING YOU 4 TIMES IN CONCERT. I WILL MISS YOU BILLY
April 16, 2009
The hidden talent in this once roadie for a great Southern Rock band. You not only added the missing part of the puzzle for Lynyrd Skynyrd, but you were part of the glue that held it together. You will be missed my friend, the smile, the biggest of hearts, and the classical styling turned ragtime in your ivory runs on the piano. God Bless you Billy, you're sound will always be with me.

i want to say i loved Billy Powell. i play piano myself and was amazed at his talent. i saw the band two years in a row in Rome, Georgia in 2004 and 2005. i am 56 years old and around the same age as Billy was. i had tickets to see the original band in Dothan, Alabama in 1977 just two months before the plane crash but was playing softball that day and kept winning so i couldnt leave. the things Billy could do with a keyboard amaze me and i loved everything he played. to his family are my most heartfelt sympathies. i will ALWAYS love Skynyrds music. to me, they are the best rock and roll band of all time. i hope Billy, Ronnie, and Allen are entertaining everyone in Heaven.

March 19, 2009
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Powell Family. Billy's piano playing is one of the main things that separated Skynyrd from the other Southern Rock Bands. What an awesome player and person. See you inside the pearly gates Billy! Say Hi to the rest of the band for me!
March 19, 2009
Billy, I am filled with sorrow and joy. Melinda and I had the great pleasure of meeting and spending time with you, your wife and the rest of the band. We were fortunate enough to be rooming across the hall from you guys! Both times we spent time together you were kind and considerate. We spoke about your "Special Intro" to "Free Bird" and you performed it that night at the concert. After the concert we met up (with your wife) again and you told me that you "through that in for ME!" Even though your talent, style, flair on the keys will never be matched that is only surpassed by the kindness that you and your wife shared with us. You guys treated us like family! You will be missed, but if I listen closely I believe I can hear those black and white keys ringing through the gates of Heaven! We will join you 'round the Throne one day! Thanks for the memories!
Love and Blessings,
Mark and Melinda

Gary, Dale & Johnny, I am so sorry to hear that Billy passed away. I loved that man, He was the most giving careing person that I'd ever met. I haven't seen any of you since the late 80's, but think of you all, all the time. I was blessed to have such wonderful memories of you all from back stage concerts to drum solo contests with Leon to Bringing in the new year in 1982 with Charlie Daniels, while sitting on the piano stool with Billy. Those are memories that I will never forget and I am proud to say that he touched my life.
My prayers go out to you all and his family. And Billy may you too, just like Ronnie.....FLY HIGH FREEBIRD, YOU'RE FREE AT LAST!!!!!
March 15, 2009
I'm not a fan of Lynnrd Skynnrd and never knew of "Billy Powell" until he sat next to me for our flight from Hartford to DC just two weeks before he died. I've taken hundreds/thousands of flights and never enjoyed one more. He talked fondly of his wife and kids, of his bandmates - of trying to help them all through troubled times. We talked the entire flight and he even got off on his layover (my destination) in DC to help me with my bags. He ordered hard liquor at 11am and I told him that that made my day - he was living up to his rockstar image - but then he explained the rules of never drinking before a performance and how those rules were learned the hard way. I'd never met such a positive, fun person and conversation changed my life. I only knew him for a few hours, but an incredibly kind man – talked of giving 10% of his money to charity and - with a smile - about those who were nice only AFTER they learned he was a SUCCESSFUL musician. Gave me his seat and helped me with my bags and said I was extra safe because the odds of him going down in a plane again were infinitesimal. Talked about his planned classic album and how he would play “free bird”” for weddings next door to his place, spontaneously. What it was like knowing you had only 15 minutes to live and how that can change your approach to others going forward. I'm a senior fellow at Harvard and invited Billy and the band to come up and speak there sometime and was looking forward to seeing him again when I was devestated by the news that he passed. I had rarely ever met anyone so "alive" and although I only knew Billy for a few hours I am still greatly upset by his passing. A great loss for all of us. I hope his memory remains as inspirational as the man.

I am friends with Billy and his family. I think about him every day. He loved coming over to our porch. He was kind and generous. I took him into the radar room at Jax International Airport and plugged him in with me as he watched me work as an air traffic controller. He thought it was the coolest thing to go "backstage" somewhere that was foreign and mysterious. He was always the one to let people backstage, and he loved going behind the scenes with me. I did not tell anyone he was coming, so, in the dark room, he was anonymous...he was like a kid. I've never seen anyone happier. Attached are pictures of Billy and his family at an oyster roast at our house. I miss him.

from the opening notes ,to the rampaging conclusion,FREEBIRD,has touched my life so many times,as does the complete Skynyrd, catalog. no other bands music can compare, it just suits my life and lifestyle, i can relate to the band as if they knoow me personlly.and as for Billy his style playing reminds me of an old saloon style. which complimented the bands writing to a tee.i have seen them about 25 times, my best freinds wife was Billys nurse at the babtist hospital in jackson,ms. after the crash in 77.so as the bench by Ronnies tomb reads FLY ON PROUD BIRD YOUR FREE AT LAST,,,,you will be souly missed . tell your brthers mike said hello, and the world misses yall so bad.RR00CK OOONN!!!!!!!!

I met Billy and Ellen when my husband was in Iraq. I will never be able to put in words how much they helped me get through those 14 months. Not only did they buy me a puppy, which I named Lynyrd, but they treated me like family from day one. Billy often prayed for us and one day felt compelled to tell me that the Lord kept answering his prayers. God told Billy that my husband was one of His children that were going to survive Iraq. That he was going to be okay. The conversation we had that day was what got me through the remainder of my husband’s deployment. Billy gave me faith when no one else could. That is the kind of person Billy was, and I will always love him for that. I will always be proud to be his friend. Love, Chollet

February 27, 2009
Although I don't know you, I have followed you, with respect and admiration brother. You live within us all.

February 25, 2009
So sorry to hear of Billy's death. He was one of the best rock and roll pianists ever. Skynyrd wouldn't have been the same without him. Can't tell you how many times Billy's piano has comforted me. Radio in Oklahoma has played Skynyrd from the beginning. Classic rock station KRXO 107.7 FM plays several Skynyrd songs every single day, and not just the "usual suspects" like Freebird, Gimme 3 Steps, Sweet Home Alabama, Saturday Night Special, What's Your Name and That Smell. They also play Simple Man, Tuesday's Gone, Don't Ask Me No Questions, Workin' for MCA, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, The Needle and the Spoon, Call Me the Breeze, Whiskey Rock a Roller, I Know a Little, and You Got That Right. That's an awful lot of songs for a band that recorded for 4 short years. They couldn't have done it without Billy. I wish more people would realize what we have known since 1973: Lynyrd Skynyrd is the best American rock band. Ever. What an incredible body of work!

I'm so sorry for his family, blood and band. To have his death come so close to the anniversary of Allen's death (Jan 23 1990) must make it even harder for Gary and the others. Thanks for the music, Billy. Like all of the others, you were gone too soon.
February 25, 2009
I was lucky enouph to attend the Lynyrd Skynyrd show at the point in Dublin and it was a high point in my life.
Billy Powell will be sadly missed but not forgotten.

February 21, 2009
Hello band and fans. I just wanted to drop a few lines to show my love for Lynyrd Skynyrd and Billy Powell, representing hundreds of enduring fans, that's just those I know, from the great state of Texas. I have been a huge fan of the band and this wonderful tickler of the ivories for at least 18 of my 33 years. I was fortunate enough to see and hear Billy with the band twice: once in Dallas in '95 at the former Coca-cola Starplex, and again in '98 (I think) at Reunion Arena in Austin. Billy did proudly take the spotlight that night with an improv-like performance from his 360-degree spinning piano! It was wonderful. He was an essential part of my favorite band of all time, and will be greatly missed. I was so pleased to read of Dale Rossington's comment about Billy's love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As I suspected, I can look forward to sitting in with that great heavenly band up there one day, with my brother Billy Powell. I've always been quick to site his musical genius in musical conversations, and his name will always be spoken of in high regard in my home. God Bless you, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
February 21, 2009
When I heard the news of Billy's passing,I just sat and cried like a baby.Fans of other bands just don't get what true Skynyrd fans feel, they have always made their true fans feel like a member of their family. On the day Billy passed that is exactly what my wife and myself lost ,is a member of the family. You were taken from us too soon my friend but will be remembered in the fondest way till the day we see you in rock n roll heaven. We have a memorial service every October 20th and of course you will be added to the others we lost. You were the greatest to ever tickle the ivories and will be missed for ever. FLY ON PROUD BIRD.

February 17, 2009
worst news in music history since I've been alive!!! God bless his Immediate family, Band Members and Friends! My 15 yr. old daughter called me just crying!Husband and I took her twice to see them, once with her friend who fell in love with them instantly! We can say sorry as many times as we want,... his poor wife and kids...,but plain and simple... "Death SUCKS!! Lynard Skynyrd is a big connection between my 15 yr. old,me and my husband!! I cried asthough I lost a family member. In our car rides we would jam to Skynyrd, and sing like we (could sing,HA, HA), she or I were personally the only one in the car. Then I would "have to play my air piano", tick her off and "have to replay the whole song again.which wouldn't matter. We listen to it beginning to end, over and over again till we'd get home. If there were anything any one fan could do to rid the family of any ounce of pain and suffering... it'd be done in a second or less.Ya can't. and that's why at any funeral I've been to,put all the sorry's ect. aside AND DEATH SUCKS!!! This isn't the end of Skynard, Lets give the other players, in the band, some credit, it's well deserved!! They've always rocked and I'm sure have alittle something brewing in their souls to continue on. HOW AWFULL!!!Billy P. IS and ALWAYS will be the best!!!! Sorry again, till the end of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

February 16, 2009
Dear Billy, Fly High Forever... Forever in our Hearts. We Miss You.
February 15, 2009
I do not have the words to express my great sorrow at the death of Billy Powell. He has helped to bring such beautiful music to my life and to the lives of many others for so many years. No one plays the piano like Billy. While those of us on earth shed our tears, I know that God, the angels, and Billy's bandmates who went to their Heavenly home before him are rejoicing at having him with them again. God bless and comfort Billy's wife, children, and other family members. My prayers are with you. I just lost my beloved mother about two months ago and I know what you are going through. A special expression of sympathy goes out to the band members and the crew who Billy enjoyed so many wonderful years and experiences with. Fly on Freebird... the music world will never be the same without you.
February 15, 2009
Billy,

Saw you and the boys at the PNC Art Center in New Jersey three lucky times. The intro to Freebird always filled the venue with everlasting memories. Also, The Breeze was your time to shine. Thanks for the memories and giving me the music that will follow me everyday.

CHEERS & RIP!!

You came down and hung out with us and played the piano a couple times. I admire everything about your life and Know you will be missed but your reward awaits you in Heaven. Words can’t express how tragic this is for me. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music is so special. My first time witnessing the spectacle that was a live Skynyrd show was in ‘74 at the tender age of 14 and I was hooked from then on. Saw them 5 times with Ronnie & met him, Billy & Gary at one of those shows… in Atlanta. Such cool, approachable & down to earth people. No egos at all. Saw them 8 times with Johnny and Rossington Collins Band once in between so that’s a total of 14 times I saw this amazing man play the keys. So talented. So unique. There have been many players brought in to this band in place of those that have passed or left but I don’t see how they can continue now & it makes me so sad. Billy’s style, presence & grace literally just can’t be replaced. He was that good. As much as I’d love to see & hear more Skynyrd music & shows (if there is I’ll be there) I think this looks like the end of the long flight of a very proud & “free
bird”. Truely a terrible loss to the music world but more importantly my heart goes out to his family, bandmates, friends & everyone else that knew & loved the man personally.
RIP Billy. You were one of a kind. Also RIP to Hughie, Leon, Allen, Cassie, Steve, Ronnie and as much as it pains me to say this….. probably RIP to Lynyrd Skynyrd as well.
The greatest american Rock & Roll band !! EVER !!
February 14, 2009
I cant tell you how much the love of Billy Powells key strokes have soothed my wondering mind.I love the boys from Skynyrd and they will forever play in my heart.May God Bless the Powell family

People say that all good things come to an end. I say GREATNESS IS FOREVER.
Billy..you didn't just play the keys, you made them sing like no one else ever will. I did not have the honor and privilege of meeting you and the band in person, however as your music and its emotion has been there with me from the begining and helped me through a loss of my own, you are all part of my family. I hope some day to have the honor of meeting in person those members with whom you played, to thank them in person for the inspiration and celebrate your memory with them. The magic of Lynyrd Skynyrd
will live forever, and so does the ledgend of Billy Powell.

To the Powell family, my heart is saddened by your loss. I want to thank you for sharing your son and his gift with me and the rest of the world, we are truley blessed.

My first and best Lynard Skynard concert, front row in front of Billy. The way he played was truely fantastic. He even threw a drink to me in the audience. What a night! I kept the can and had him and other band members sign it at the next concert (we had backstage passes.) His music will truely be missed! Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all his family!

Billy:

Curtis may have been the "Finest Picker to ever play the Blues", but without a doubt, you were the "Finest Pianist to Have Ever Blessed the Planet". Billy was a great inspiration to me when 1st learning to play piano, He will truly be missed. If someone is to replace Billy in the Skynyrd band, I hope they will do him and the band justice. The band will never be the same though I fear.
Thank you Billy for your inspiration and for a few of the licks I stole.

Hebrews 9:26-28
(King James Version)

26For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

27And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

28So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
Billy, Let's Just remeber the Prayer you offered unto the Lord at Great woods that night, you are forever my Brother in the Lord!

February 09, 2009
I met Billy when I drove the band to their gig in Deansboro, NY. I was lucky enough to grab an old drum head the drum tech was replacing and got everyone's autograph. Billy took an extra minute to inscribe "Lynyrd Skynyrd 2006" on the head before he signed it. I also got to watch the concert from the wings, right behind Billy. As a life long fan, I will never forget it. All the guys were great to me and I felt like I was 17 again, playing Skynyrd cover tunes with my band. God bless.
February 09, 2009
February 09, 2009
Billy, you, Sir, were the class of the southern rock piano players. Truly a giant amongst giants! Your magic will be sorely missed by many! Go with God, my friend.
February 09, 2009
I have forever (30 yrs now been a fan) said only 1 man can play the piano and that is Billy Powell. You could hear a song and know if it was billy or just some wannabe. When I heard the Kid Rock "all summer long" I said--Wow--the Kid knocked it outta the park by getting Billy on that---my husband said--are you sure? Hell yeah--i know billy's piano anywhere!! So to prove me wrong--husband got the sleave to the CD--and there it was--in the credit--piano--Billy Powell. Will NEVER be another - nor can be replaced. Thank you Billy for the tunes--and thank you to his family for sharing so much of his time here on earth with all of us.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Billy Powell. He played such a great part in the Skynyrd sound. I started playing guitar at age 5, and cut my musical teeth on Skynyrd music. By age 15 I had my own "Skynyrd" cover band. We even covered our amps with Rebel flags and played every Skynyrd song we could. Thanks Billy for sharing your God given talent with the world. You will be GREATLY missed! May the Lord's peace rest upon your family. May the music of Skynyrd ROCk on for ever!

February 08, 2009
I am sooo sorry. I have been a fan of Billys for many years. I recall one concert, my husband and I got stuck behind the amps. We had to move because I felt that if I couldn't see Billys hands move so quickly and watch how he tips his piano stool when hes really jammin on the piano, I would cry.. I am deeply saddened by this and he will be missed in my heart. Skynard is my favorite artist, and I feel like I have lost Family.. God Bless everyone in Billys family and the band.
February 08, 2009
Billy, I am sad to hear that after everything you have been through, the music ends at such an early time in your life. If ever there was a keyboard and pianist of our day, it is you! I will miss you more than anyone will know. Godspeed Billy!
February 08, 2009
Wow, i was shock to learn of Billy's death tonight on the grammys. He was by far my most favorite (besides Ronnie) member of Skynyrd. I will miss his piano playing and don't know if i can attend another concert if he is not there to play. It will be tough. Been a Skynyrd fan since 75'. Today brings back many memories when i heard the Freebird went down. Love you Billy, to his family God Bless. Skynyrd forever
February 08, 2009
I just found out on the Grammy's that Billy Powell died. I saw him in Richmond, VA two years ago, and it was a dream come true. Listening to him play in person was an awesome experience. I'm so sorry for his family and friends. May he rest in peace and thank you for many years of great music.
February 08, 2009
Grew up listening to his great music, which will live on forever. May God's mercy and grace provide relief for his family, friends and band members as they deal with this tragic loss.
February 08, 2009
I never will forget the night my wife and I double dated to attend a Who concert in Dallas. Much to our surprise there was a large rebel flag behind the stage. We all wondered why, and where was the Union Jack? Then this band began to crank out some awesome music. After about 3 songs, I looked at my friend and ask which one of those guys was playing lead guitar. His response was "hell, I think all of em' are?" The Who was awesome, but all we talked about on the way home was that opening band. Best concert I ever saw....thanks Billy for sharing your talent with us. Looking forward to the Skynyrd concert in Heaven someday!!
February 08, 2009
HEAVEN AND ROCK & ROLL, HOW POETIC. ROCK OUT.
February 08, 2009
Billy will be sadly missed. Rest in Peace Billy.
My thoughts and Prayers to the family, friends and the fans.
God Bless you Billy for the happiness and music you brought to so many.
The music lives on.

Thank you Billy for many a memorable moment. Billy Powell on the piano..good, no great times were usually followed by that! No matter what was going on in my life, you always brought a smile to my face! God Bless for the music, you'll be missed! If I ever catch up to you in heaven, maybe you can play just one more for us..Hope so!!

Love Always Mel and that crazy sidekick Nanikaboom!
February 08, 2009
Wow, My heart is broken. I saw you twice in Danville, Va. I loved watching you play that piano. I know you are in a better place. My thoughts go out to your family. We love you Billy Powell. Katie
February 08, 2009
To the memory of a man to whom God gave superb talent - a man who did what he could with that talent to bring joy and spirit to others - therefore, made that talent a gift back to God. Labels don't always tell the entire story of what work is going on inside the heart of a man. I believe Billy worked out the salvation that was in his heart and reached the time when his earthly struggle would pass in favor of a peaceful rest in heaven above. Free as a bird now, up there in heaven....I bet he is tickling the ivorys in the palaces. God Bless !
February 08, 2009
My heart goes out to the Powell Family and the entire Lynyrd Skynyrd Family. Fly on Proud Bird, For You Are Free At Last.
February 08, 2009
I have been a LS fan as long as I can remember. There's nothing better than experiencing Billy Powell tickling the ivories at a Synyrd show. I had the pleasure of meeting Billy and the band on the '87 Reunion Tour in Jackson, MS and again while prepping for the following tour in Meridian, MS.
What a great musical talet and a true gentle giant - a traditonal Son of the South.

I will miss you!
February 08, 2009
I was blessed to have gotten to spend a month with Billy in Nashville back in the summer of 06. I had just gotten to see him play on this past New Years, I truly came home telling people it was 1 of the best shows I have ever seen. I am so sad now I didn't get a chance to speak to Billy. If only I had 1 more chance. Billy even came to Church with me once to pray for my new-born in the ICU. God Bless You Billy Powell!! I also send my deepest sympathies to his family.
February 08, 2009
I first heard SKYNYRD in the seventies in the original version of the movie the Longest Yard .They were playing Mr. Saturday Night Special, was so blown away by their sound had to sit throught the credits to see who did that song.I thought who is LYNYRD SKYNYRD,then almost over night everyone knew who they were.Rock on Billy have been a fan for years ain't gonna stop now.We both have the same Savoir so I will see you later!
February 08, 2009
Mere words are incapable of expressing either the depth or the breadth of Billy Powell's soul ... he may well have been the most loving person I've ever met, but is truly one of the best people to have drawn breath in this mortal coil. While I don't have any biological brothers, our having shared the horrors of that plane crash drew Billy and me, along with the whole Lynyrd Skynyrd gang, into an undeniable kinship, so I have lost yet another 'brother'. Yet, perhaps the hardest loss is to his family, so please keep both Billy and his family in your prayers.
February 08, 2009
Thank You for all the music that you have shared with us, your songs will be in our hearts forever you will be missed by all. Fly in Peace Free Bird.
February 08, 2009

"Billy Powell, on the piano".....

I saw you in Lynyrd Skynyrd for the first time in July 1977, and many times after that. I feel like another piece of my teenage years has left me with your passing.

Rest in Peace Billy.....you are missed dearly.

I just learned of Billy's crossing over..I am still in shock. I remember very well the day of the plane crash and how numb I was to hearing that news...again I am numb. I grew up from 1976 in my early 20's to the present being a Skynyrd Fan and how much I loved to hear Billy hit them ivory's! Fly on Free Bird, you'll always be a part of my music and so deeply missed!
February 07, 2009
I "grew up" on Lynyrd Skynyrd...I was just graduating high school in 1977 and remember the news of the plane crash. .Music one listens to as a teen leaves a big impression in your memory.......and I yet enjoy listening to Free Bird and all the oldies. It was a treat to watch the "you tube" video just now. Billy struck that piano in some way. I pray that Billy is experiencing a peace not known to everyone. I pray for his family.
February 07, 2009
God Bless you Billy and give your family strength to carry on in this world till we all meet again..Say hi to Ronnie,Steve,Dean,Allen,Cassie,Leon and Chuck..Fly on freebird, fly on proud bird and God give the Powell family the strength, the courage and understanding to accept thy will...The Eastwoods in Miami

You gave us many years of memories and great music. You recovered from the loss of your bandmates and injury of the crash to give us more of your love through music and we loved you for it! I'm glad that we lived the same lifetime together so I could enjoy singing along with your songs thousands of times through the years. Fly on with your new wings, Freebird! We'll miss you greatly!

Billy, you surely will be missed. Over the years, you have provided so much happiness for me through tough times by just putting on your music. All these years, and I never met you in person. We'll meet in Heaven one day, deal? My thoughts and prayers are with your family, bandmates, friends, and the millions of folks who mourn your passing. We should rejoice, but it is so hard not to have you down here with us. I'm so thankful I got to see you one last time in Danville this year.

Turn it up Billy.....
February 06, 2009
My life was blessed to grow up with the music of Skynyrd. Most of my teenage memories include their music. I still enjoy it 30 years later. Thank you. Love ya Billy.
February 05, 2009
I tuned Billy's piano when Skynyrd came to our town about 7 years ago. My (late) daughter came with me to the concert and I let her meet the band after the show so she could get everyone's autograph. Leon had a bad case of the flu that evening.

I cannot say how graceful a man Biully was- truly the empitome of southern hospitality. Always smiling, gracious towards me and my daughter, and humorous, even after a grueling 2-hr concert that left Johnny's voice cracking by the time "Freebird" ended the show.

Billy, you are surely missed. Say "Hi" to my daughter for me, and the rest of the Jacksonville gang, too...
February 05, 2009
Billy, we grew up together but yet , I have never met you, We played together but yet you never saw my keyboards. While I pretended to be Ronnie, singing the all the songs, you were always there playing while I sang. You've been like a brother I never had and the brother I've always wanted. Thanks for making my life full with your sounds and rich with your presence. I will never forget you, never. God Bless
February 05, 2009
For Billy Powell....Thank you for making my life life great.......Lynyrd Skynyrd forever!
February 05, 2009
Billy,

The first time I saw you perform was in 1980 with the Rossington Collins Band. The last time I saw you in concert was in Albany, Ga. where I last saw Leon, who you are now with in heaven, along with some of your other brothers for the first time in some years.

My heart goes out to your family, as well as your brothers here on earth, Gary, Artimus, and Ed. I hope your brothers here on earth find peace among themselves.

Much love from your fellow native Floridian,

Richard Albert Perez

You will be forever missed and never forgotten.....Fly free
February 05, 2009
You are the greatest rock-n-roll piano player of all time. You are surely missed. Man, I dug out some old vinyl and it was cool listening to you and the band from the beginning. I have been a Skynyrd fan since the first time I saw you at the Modesto fairgrounds, opening for Rod Stewart and Black Sabbath, 1972. Y'all blew them away and have since. Love ya, Dave
February 05, 2009
Being South Florida natives, and in Billy's age group, 51 & 52, my husband and I grew up with Lynyrd Skynyrd, attending all of their concerts down here from the time we were teenagers. Our best memory is after a Rossington Collins concert in Sunrise, FL. We took a chance and stopped in at the Holiday Inn Hotel right off of I-95 and Commercial Blvd in Ft. Lauderdale. We guessed this might be where the band was staying. How lucky we were! Everyone was in the bar. Our friend, Keith, now passed away, played foos-ball with Billy. We sat at the bar and enjoyed ALL the band's company. We'll never forget that night! For whatever reason life dealt this band so many heartaches along with all the blessings, we will never know. But we do know Billy is with Ronny and everyone else in heaven now. And their music will continue to live forever. God Bless Lynyrd Skynyrd!
February 05, 2009
I've attended many Lynyrd Skynyrd concerts during the 1990s including on New Year's Eve 1999 in Houston and also this decade too. I once met Billy Powell and personally spoke with him in Maryland prior to a concert. I remember him joking with me. I'm glad to read that Billy Powell was a Christian.

My father, who was a Christian as am I, died at his home in Maryland on Jan. 30, 2009 and I'm now preparing for his memorial services this weekend. My father was first diagnosed with cancer on Sept. 11, 2006.

My father was a guitarist as am I. I just played the song "Simple Man" on my acoustic guitar and sang it again earlier this week at my home with my family.

I will pray for Billy Powell's family and friends during this time of loss.
February 05, 2009
Rest In Peace Free Bird. I had the pleasure of seeing Skynyrd live a few years back for the first time, and I was amazed at how your piano solos still sounded note for note from the original recordings. This truly is the day the music died. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.
February 05, 2009
My husband was the crane operator that set the headstone for Ronnie VanZandt. We both loved the band so much and were saddened by the tragedy. The loss of Billy is as sad as that day the plane crashed. I went to an outdoor concert one day and me and another girl about 1/3 my age danced, laughed and sang together. I have 19 and 22 year old sons and they love Lynyrd Skynyrd just as much as I do! I think it's great when families of all ages can listen to the same band at the same time and enjoy the music together. There aren't to many bands out there than can do that! We will forever miss you.
February 05, 2009
Thanks for your music and thanks for you & The Skynard Band for putting Jacksonville, Florida on the map, You made us all proud!!!!
February 05, 2009
I thank God for giving us a Billy Powell to enjoy all these years. Fly on proud bird you're free at last!!!

RIP Billy Powell. Fly on Freebird ! Will have to stop by and pay my respects in Orange Park, Fl sometime. Like RVZ said...in Honky Tonk Nightime Man... Billy Powell on piano.
February 05, 2009
Me and some buds had the privaledge of enjoying Skynyrd last September in Danville, VA, with Billy playing the keys with brilliance.....I am a piano man and since being a kid have always been in awe at how the keys of Billy Powell helped define Lynyrd Skynyrd's sound and legacy....oh how sweet the sound, especially on "Freebird".....a fan from Danville, Virginia
February 05, 2009
My families prayers are with Billy's family in there time of need. I saw Billy perform in Omaha, NE last April. It was the greatest anniversary present my husband has ever given me. I will never forget that show! May God be with you! Thanks for all the great shows Billy!
February 05, 2009
I first saw Billy and the band at the first Ga Jam in 1973 and been a fan ever since, seeing them numerous times. I also am the one helping hold up the confederate flag on the picture insert inside the One More From the Road LP recorded at the Fox in Atlanta. I have been a fan since the beginning and always appreciated Billys playing. He always seemed like a class act. I pray for his family and wish them well. I'm sure Billy is in good hands. Terry Darby - Atlanta
February 05, 2009

Hey Billy Fly High Free Bird! We will miss you in Missouri !
February 04, 2009
We will miss you and your piano music. You are truly a "free bird " now and are soaring in the heavens with your bandmates.I hope Skynyrd does not consider retiring now as this would be a tremendous loss and an emptiness in my heart. You are not truly dead until you are forgotten-and you will NEVER be forgotten.Fly on "Free Bird".
February 04, 2009
billy, you were the best pianist ever.we will miss you jammin out on that white piano.you are now a freebird yourself.
February 04, 2009
Many of times since 1976 I flicked my lighter to him as he started out that beautiful song Free Bird, I hope they never try to replace him, and that they should seriously consider retiring the band. I saw him for the last time in May 08, and as far as I am concearn that will be my last time of ever going to see Skynrd.........
February 04, 2009
A true legend has been lost even though he would never consider himself one. There are few things you can pick out when listening to music and know who it was. Billys piano was one of them. May god welcome you and may you meet up with the rest of the band. You will be truly missed.
February 04, 2009
Thank You for the memories, when I hear the old Skynyrd tunes I'm 20 again
February 04, 2009
I felt numb, the same way I felt in 1977 after the crash! There will never be another band who has had so much influence on my life. Peace to you Billy, now heaven will have the best!
February 04, 2009
RIP Billy...
I don't think anyone can replace him in the band...what he did was definately talent..I got to meet him last year at the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi MS...He gave me a hug and I told him how much I loved him and Skynyrd and then he got on the elevator and was gone...I even had my camera with me and didn't get a pic..I didn't want to bring to much attention to him so he didn't get bombarded with fans...I wish that I did get the pic but I will always remember how nice he was...
Billy you will be missed greatly but Now you are with all the other great Skynyrd members we have lost...
May you rest in Peace.
February 04, 2009
Billy Powell was truly an inspiration to this community. I'm so glad that I was able to see him with the band last summer with Hank Williams, Jr.. It was an honor to see this rock 'n' roll legend one last time.

God bless your entire family, and God bless Billy Powell.
February 04, 2009
Oh Gosh. Now the lightning of destiny has struck one of the greatest keyboardists of our time, at the unbelievable age of 56.
This might tell us that Southern Rock should be enjoyed as long as there are still musicians like him on this earth. It may mean the end of Southern Rock eventually.--
By the way, while reading all these grievous messages, I chose to not have this underlined by Skynyrd music but ... by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' "Car Over The Lake" album.
I can barely explain it; but every song appears to contain ten times as much melancholy as normally.

Now playing is "Thin Ice". Yes life is like "thin ice", once it has become brittle, every day could be the last day.

R. I. P.
February 04, 2009
Billy,
I have been a fan of Skynyrd since the 70's. Y'all have been the most profound band in my life. Everytime I listen to Free Bird it just uplifts my soul. Loving the piano like I do I thought you were just amazing. Our hearts are heavy with your loss but I just can't believe what a reunion you are having in Heaven with Van Zant, Gaines, Collins, Wilkerson. When you get there get on those pearly keys and just rock out in heaven.

Your biggest fan,
Rhonda Slayton (Mt. Airy, NC)

Billy, I've been a fan since the 70's then got to meet you the first time and hang out in the late 80's when you came to my church while playing with Vision. Then again in 2002 in Shreveport, LA we met again and I have to say it was one of the most memorable nights in my life standing behind you off the stage while you played Freebird. So, when I say I've been a fan all my life I mean it...and I've never met a more kind and gracious celebrity. You will be missed by many and no one can take your place. On the piano or in life. Fly on.
February 04, 2009

triumph. May God welcome you in his Glory and may that warm smile you shine from
above bring tidings of your good graces upon all of us who will always
love you forever, dearest Friend!
February 03, 2009
This is to all the Lynard Skynard family. I saw the band at least 5 times before 1977 and the first of many deaths to follow. They were amazing. I saw them in Lakeland, Jacksonville, but the best concerts of them I saw were in Mobile, Alabama several times. God works in mysterious ways, as he took band members to him about every 5-10 years, leaving only Gary now as the last man left of the origanal band which I loved so dearly. I've never had the forum to express what each member meant to me. We are of the same age and they were my escape from the real world during my college years at The University of Florida from 1973-1978. I hope each had a relationship with Jesue Christ so that I may see them once again when I go home. My prayers to all family members of the band and my thanks for the gift they gave to me during my youth.
February 03, 2009
Billy Powell was a phenomenal keyman and a major inspiration to me musically since i was a little kid and first began playing. Not very many Pianists/Keyboardist could touch his technique and he will be sorely missed RIP

February 03, 2009
I have been trying to express my sorrow and condolences on Bill's passing since I got the news Wednesday morning, but it has taken until now for me to accept it. Bill was one of my best friends while attending Bishop Kenny high school and the year after he graduated which was in 1971. Some of the things I have fond memories of are he and my mom playing jazz duets on our old piano. Even though it was way out of tune, he still made it sound great (and my mom got a big kick out of it)! I remember all of the concerts we went to at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Dozens of them from Ted Nugent, Boston, YES (one of his favorites back then), Rod Stewart, Jethro Tull (twice), etc. I still have the ticket from April 1st 1972 when we went to see Emerson, Lake and Palmer. We had bought the tickets in advance ($4.00 each) but when we got to the coliseum for the show, we couldn't find the tickets any where in his car and ended up having to purchase them again at the door. Once the concert was over and we got back to his car, there they were laying on the floor board (maybe a little bit too much of the old Boone's Farm or MD 20/20 wine?). I remember going to the Riverside park a lot, watching Bill, his brother Ricky, Greg W. and Jeff C. all jumping around acting like fighting crabs (yes, crabs!), coming home at night and my mom fixing us hot chocolate with marshmellows and Bill and I feeding the marshmellows to my dog Ginger until her mouth foamed white and she looked like she was rabid (no harm was done to Ginger. She loved marshmellows and the more the merrier). Bill not only taught me how to drive but took me to get my drivers liscense... twice (I never could park between those stupid orange cones). We must have set a record for seeing "The Night of the Living Dead" at the Fox Drive-in (6 times I think). The last time I talked to him in person was in 2000/2001(?) when he and the band played in Richmond, VA. During the warm up act, I could see Bill walking around back stage so I started yelling out his name and amazingly enough, he heard me over the music and sent someone out to get my husband and I. It was a wonderful, but short reunion due to picture signing and then "stage time" for the boys. He invited us to come to his hotel room after the concert so we could vist some more (he gave us his fake registration name which cracked me up). Being directionally challenged as I am, we never did find the hotel and returned back to our Holiday Inn room. I did talk to him by phone the next morning and one of the 1st things he asked me was if I still had the leather fringed jacket I got when I was in 10th grade (at least 30 years earlier). What a memory he had! (and yes, I told him I did, and still do). That old saying "you don't know what you had until it's gone", is ringing extremely loud for me right now. I envy all the time Ricky, Ellen and the rest of his immediate and extended family had with Bill, and am so grateful for the time I had during his earlier years as his friend. My heart and prayers are with all of you who are mourning the loss of a great brother, husband, father, musician or friend. I know I am. Bill....say "hello" to your mom and to Roy for me. I'll be seeing you.

I had the opportunity to talk to Billy many times when he called us at Kuhn Flowers. I must admit I was kind of star struck when speaking to him even though he was so down-to-earth and soooo nice. It was like talking to your brother or your best friend. He had the best personality. I must admit I have always been in awe of his talent, being a piano player myself. I was very lucky to have had the chance to talk to him "in person"! How many of us get to experience a conversation with a legend? I only wished I could have seen him perform in concert. Billy, you will be so dearly missed by all of us. Rock on, Billy....Rock on! Go Skynyrd!!!! xoxo
February 03, 2009
rest in peace Billy

February 03, 2009
How shocked I was when I heard of Billy's untimely death. I had just been talking about him the day before, saying how I would love to meet him. It's truly strange how things happen sometimes. At least, I was fortunate enough to see Billy in action when I went to see the band. The last time was last year in Charleston, WV and like always, Billy looked as though he was having the time of his life. You could tell that he truly enjoyed playing for the fans. Billy will be sadly missed but never forgotten. My heart goes out to Billy's family & friends and to his Skynyrd family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Since I didn't get to meet Billy in this old world, I look forward to meeting him in the new world to come.
"The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life."--John 5:28,29

Sad greetings from a veteran drummer from Canada. I am a late Fan of Skynrd, not realizing how great you all were 'till the '80's. Man O Man, you were the glue that held the sound together...that wailing Organ in the background or that fantastic grand piano. What a sad shock. Thank God music is eternal, but it won't stop my tears. Rest well, Billy. I hope to jam with you when I leave this Planet. Have my Ludwigs ready and tuned, will Ya?

February 02, 2009
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As a former (and hope to be again)
neighbor at the Continental Palace,
our hearts go out to you, Ellen, and
all of the family. Jim spoke to Billy on
Tuesday of last week at the Palace, came home and told me that Billy looked great and was in a fantastic mood. In fact he gave Jim a couple of autographed photos--which we will cherish. Lynyrd Skynyrd will never be the same without Billy's
piano and his amazing talent. We will pray for you all at this sad time.
All our love, Jim and Kay Lynch

February 02, 2009
Billy was a wonderful man and Jax. LOVED him. I am 40 and my daughter is 18...she grew up on their music. When the Super Bowl was in Jax. my daughter and I were at the landing and I saw Billy chillin' at the bar with his wife. I went and introduced myself and my daughter. I asked if my daughter could take a pic of he & I...of couse he said "Sure" !! His wife stood up and insisted that she take the pics so we could all 3 be in them. I thought that was so nice. They invited us to hang out and have a drink with them. They were so down to earth. Billy asked my then 15 year old...what's your fav. song...she said "gimmie 3 steps"...Billy told her.."yea...I love that one too". That is a night neither of us will never forget.
February 02, 2009
My husband and I grew up listening to this great band . Now my children are enjoying them. What a great band and a truly great man and musician.

I attended Robert E. Lee High School from 1967-1970 and was a avid Skynyrd fan then and still today. Billy's presence in the band will be missed; but I can always relive those memories by watching a DVD of the band at home to reminisce when the band first started playing. May the Lord continue to bless and comfort the Powell family.

Cannot believe this band is down to 2 members from the classic line up and one is not in the band (Artimus Pyle). I wish they could bring him and Ed King back in. Thank God for Gary Rossington, Ricky Medlocke and Johnny and Donnie Van Zandt. Man I miss all the Skynrd brothers Danny Joe Brown. Don't know how they are going to replace Mr. Powell. Dead of a heart attack at 56 ?! What's with all these rockers dying so young ? U r with the Angels now.

I was driving when a rock station out of Knoxville was playing your songs all day and talking about what a great piano player and man you were. I pulled over and cried, and tonight I thought about you when I looked out and saw that the lord hanged a crescent moon in the sky. I grew up listening to your music and once lived in Florida for many years, but home is East Tennessee. You will forever be missed. My sympathy to Billy's family and friends.

I just heard of the bad news today on Feb. 1st. I am very sad about it I have loved the Lynyrd Skynyrd group from afar since I was 12. The music and the dream helped me through my adolescent years, like something sacred communicating with my soul. Be a "simple man". I dreamed growing up about being a guitar player for them one day.Never thought they would ever play together again. I graduated from high school in 1990. Its just awesome that they reunited in 1991.The dream was too far away. Just think I almost couldve done it. The music will always be in my heart. Billy Powel was the best keyboard player ever.I had the pleasure of seeing the band live in concert once in 1999. This gives me real emotional experience with "The day the music died" There could never be another Billy Powel. He joins the others in the after life. Heavens got the best band. I truly Love your music Billy. I weep for the parting of a brother.
I will miss you brother.
February 01, 2009
We fondly remember our working together at Stonewall Jackson Elem. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to you and the girls in your great loss. Give us a call when you are ready.
February 01, 2009
Having seen severl variations of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band since 1987, I have always enjoyed the playing of Billy Powell. One could watch him and tell it was not a job for him, but rather something he loved to do. One could see the enjoyment he had when he played for himself, his band mates, and his fans. I was not lucky enough to ever see the original lineup of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

To all the family members of Billy Powell, band family included....

Billy put a smile on many faces around the world with his beautiful piano playing, and you should be very proud of his accomplishments over the years.

We all have lost the earthly physical being of Billy, but rest assured, his music will live on in our hearts as well as our CD and DVD players for years to come.

Billy has once again rejoined his band family members of Ronnie, leon, Steve, Allen, Hughie, and Cassie. God is slowly but surely getting the band back together and they shall rock in heaven.

Fly on freebird...
Tuesday's gone with the wind...
The breeze has blown on down the road...
Billy Powell on the piano...
Play it pretty.....for God and your long time bandmates

We were honored to be considered among the closest of Billy's friends. Our love and deepest sorrow along with sincere extension of our support whenever or however you may ever need.

Billy helped lift us up whenever we were in our own times of trouble and provided us with a life long abundance of prescious memories: hilarious times, supportive love, just being able to be in his presence lifted our spirits.

He shared some of his most intimate feelings, as we did with him.

How wonderful we feel to be able to say today that we were a part of Billy's life as true friends, he will be in our lives everyday, in our hearts forever and we know he will be with us as he will be with you until we meet again.

Billy Powell was the greatest pianist of Southern Rock and Roll. He was an imperitive part of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band and will forever missed by his fans. There was never a better sight to me that to go to the show and see that Confederate Flag draped over that white piano and watching Billy play. All Bocephus fans and Southern Boys and girls will miss you forever. Peace in Heaven brother, i can't wait to see you and the rest of the band in Heaven one day!!
February 01, 2009
Like the Preacher, Bob, said, I just wanted to hear Billy start Free Bird one more time. But Brandon's song touched me deep in my soul. I thank him for sharing it with us.
I lost my dad suddenly too, over 12 years ago. I understand the pain his kids are in.
And Ellen, he loved you more than words can say. And your pride in him shown in your eyes.
I wish we could erase the pain, but it will ease as good memories start to fill it's place.
February 01, 2009
God Bless You Billy. You were a wonderful human being to all. You will always be loved and remembered.
There was only one you and you can never be replaced.

There are no words to describe how much I will miss my dear friend. The only thing that gives me peace right now is knowing that Billy is at peace in Heaven & playing music unlike any that he has ever played before. Though he will missed by so many, we must all keep in mind that Billy is experiencing peace and joy unlike anything that he ever known before. I am so very thankful that it was in God's divine plan to bring Billy into my life. May God cover Billy's family with His love and peace that surpasses all understanding during this time, and always.

February 01, 2009
I never met Billy Powell. But I always loved Lynyrd Skynyrd. I alway got a kick out of watching Billy play the key board, he would have his head reared back with that great big smile, looking like he was having the time of his life. A couple of years ago, my wife & I were in Target in Orange Park, I saw this man walking around the store, he had a pretty bad limp in his walk. He had his head thrown back with the biggest smile, speaking to everyone he saw. I was thinking I know that man, who is he? Then it hit me, that was Billy Powell in Target. I hate to see all of those old boys go. I have a daughter who was a murder victim. She is buried in the cemetery where Ronnie Van Zant's tomb is at. Everytime I visit her grave, I pass that tomb. I always think of that band at that time. We will all miss Billy Powell, Fly on Free Bird.
February 01, 2009

January 31, 2009
I pray God will comfort Billy's family and the other band members. Billy is gone but he will definitely NOT be forgotten. His legency will endure along with the band's in music history. Billy and the band have created something very special that will be carried forward by generations to come. My 16 year old son loves their music and can play 20 Lynyrd Skynyrd songs on his Gibson Explorer exactly like Allen -- he even looks and jumps like Allen. I formed a band for him with 3 guitarists, bass, and drums; but could not find a keyboard player -- guys like Billy are rare. So Billy's and Skynyrd's legecy will be carried on!!!
January 31, 2009
Thank you for your friendship. You were always there when I needed you. God bless Ellen and your children. I'll see you in heaven someday. God speed . . .

He was more than a Rock pianist keyboard player.
Cross Beethoven/Bach classical with the great pianists
of the ragtime era and you begin to fathom His Talent.
May God's Eternal Love be with His Family and Skynyrd Frynds.

God, we ask that you comfort his family and friends during this difficult time.
January 31, 2009
Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Family. We are sorry for his loss.
January 31, 2009
Before Lynyrd Skynyrd went on stage, Billy would often lead the band in a prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no doubt in my mind that Billy was always "Playing it pretty" for our Lord and Savior.

It's hard to imagine going on without Billy in our world.
But Billy is here, and will always be with us.... here in our heart. As well as in our love for the music he helped create, and the countless number of lives he touched.

A prayer goes out from us to Ellen, the kids, the band, and all who loved Billy in this most difficult time.

May God comfort us and continue to bless us all.

See you up there Billy.....

The butterfly emerges from it silkens shell
Reborn it arises, no longer bound to earth
Free at last, the butterfly glides to heights unkown before.

So do our loved ones find a beautiful release as, earthbound no more, they leave our sight and joyfully rise to a garden of matchless beauty, a place of light and peace.

May God be with the Powell family and the Skynyrd Family in this most difficult time always and forever.
January 30, 2009
Legend has it that the band was discovered by Al Kooper at a music club on Peachtree St. here in Atlanta called Funochio's.Every time I past the club's old location I think about this band. The way these guys continue to regroup and rock is totally amazing.Billy you never got the credit that you deserved for shaping the sound of southern rock and roll. You stayed out of the spotlight but those of us who truly listened admired your great work on those keys.I know you're in a better place but man this is one guy that truly admired and will greatly miss you.Rest In Peace

Brother and Sister Frynds, I was fortunate to meet Billy and Leon and talk briefly with them and get autographs in a church in Tallahassee back in the 80's. Like all of us they had a wild side, but they both knew the Lord and I'm very sure he is enjoying that heavenly piano and bass with all the other departed but beloved bandmates. God bless Lynyrd Skynyrd and may God bless us all until we meet again and never have to part.

I've been a Skynyrd fan for almost as long as I can remember. from the old days of shows at Woodstock, Wolfson Park, and Greenfield Stables, to the Gator Bowl and Coliseum. He is a talent that will be missed by all that heard him play and those that will continue to hear him play. to the family, bandmates, and friends of Billy I know there are no words that can ease your pain, however, take comfort in the fact that Billy has received the Grace that we are all searching for. Godspeed Billy,.....and save us a seat in the front row up there.

Mr. Billy Powell
Category: Music

The year was 1986-87, Greenville,SC
I was in a Touring Act that was opening shows for a Promoter, We had opened several Shows with The Johnny Van Zant Band
We knew that Another Act had been added to the Show, but had no Ideal Who??
We are all setting around with Johnny and his band , And in walks the other band
Billy Powell's Christian rock band "Vision" with Leon Wilkeson on bass, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Opening for The Johnny Van Zant Band was KOOOL
But getting to meet Billy was The Best!!!!!!!
Then about 1-2 Years later I was Touring out west
Denver Co
We get the word that The Lynyrd Skynyrd Reunion Tour will be playing
RED ROCKS, CO. and we were invited to the Show VIP PASSES
Back stage we hung out with the Guys before & after the show, back at the Hotel They were glad to see someone from home, Jacksonville,Fl.
They treated us like family
Leon & Artimus were the clowns
Being a Singer/Keyboard player, meeting and spending time with Billy Powell one on one will be a moument I will always cherish
Billy will live on in the Music
But he will be missed!
GOD BLESS

I had a once in a lifetime experience to meet the band for several hours in a hotel bar in Ohio several years ago. Billy invited me to come over and sit with him and other memebrs of the band. Being a long time fan of all their music (with Ronnie and Johnny Van Zant) - it was a thrill of a lifetime! "Home is where the heart is" Billy, and you're home now!
January 30, 2009
My heart goes out to everyone that had the pleasure of hearing this great home town band. Just think though, we will hear them all together again when we leave here.

January 30, 2009
What a sad day. My deepest sympathy to Billy's family and the Skynyrd family. We were on the Simpleman Cruise and saw him play for the very last time. What a great musician and a wonderful person. So down to earth and always smiling. May you rest in peace and enjoy your reunion with your Skynyrd brothers.
January 30, 2009
I met Billy in 1992 after a concert in East Troy, Wisconsin. What a gracious and patient man. I had a number of things that I was having band members sign, and he had signed all very graciously. I realized as he was about to get on the bus that I had one more thing to sign. I hollered over to him and apologized for the inconvenience. He was very gracious and told me there was no need to apologize. It taught me a great life lesson of treating people well in all situations. I read that Billy had faith in Christ. What a blessing - we know and trust that he is at peace with his Lord. May all who read this have the same assurance. My prayers are for the comfort of Billy's family and fans that they may know the truth and the truth may set them free as a bird.
January 30, 2009

January 30, 2009
My prayers go out to the family, friends, band members and the fans. I have been a Skynyrd fan since 1970 and have seen them every time they came to the Twin Cities. I remember one time Billy was jamming so hard on freebird he fell off his piano bench and got back up with out ever missing a beat on the song. He also went out of his way at a Rossington Collins concert to give my little brother his towel. He was a class act. The freebird has just lost another feather of its wing.
January 30, 2009
You were there with us many nights on tape or radio at the river, Martin, Nashville and Florida .I saw you one time in Nashville playing on lower Broad. You were the greatest piano player ever bar none, your music will live forever. You will always be with us and you will never be forgotten.

January 30, 2009
God Bless you Billy. I met you in 1967@ SNA.
January 30, 2009
Billy was a nice guy. He was the first one of the Skynyrd boys to talk to me when we played shows together in the mid 70s. He was humble and showed me how he played the Sweet Home Alabama riff. We had some great nights just hanging out after shows. Then there was the night that Ronnie and the guys were going to take on us Blue Oyster Cult guys. It seemed that one of our crew had a go at their road manager unbeknownst to us. Problem solved when we agreed to put said crew on a plane home the next day. I haven't seen Billy since then but I always thought our paths would cross again. My brother just played a gig with him two weeks ago and said he thought Billy looked and sounded great. My thoughts go out to his family who must surely miss him.
January 30, 2009
Fly free Billy... Hope that you're up there jammin' with Ronnie and the gang
January 30, 2009

January 30, 2009
Fly on Freebird! I know you are all having a wonderful time being together again. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I never realized what a great piano player he was until I got older. But I guess it's like they say, the older you get, the more you appreciate the finer things of life. My husband, family and friends have followed them all around the country and can never get enough of them. All of our old partying buddies from Florida must be having one hell of a good time now. So Fly on Freebird, you'll never be forgotten. I was planning to get my tatoo this weekend so now I know for sure I will have to. I can at least say that I got to see the 30th reunion tour in Portsmouth, VA in 2007.My heart aches from seeing so many of our old friends leaving this earth so soon. But then again, there's got to be the best rock and roll band in heaven up there. I love you all and when I get there I can't wait for the wildest jam session ever!
January 30, 2009
My Daddy built my first keyboard an organ from the ground-up when I was 4 yrs old that was 1961. Since then I've played in Jr. Hi and High School and then the Navy band and played keyboards on the USS Eisenhower and in all this time Billy Powell was my idol and went to every concert I could just to hear him play. Billy you'll be missed by me and freebird friends. God be with you Always and hope to see you in heaven someday.
January 30, 2009
BILLY POWELL, YOU WERE THE GREATEST PIANO/KEYBOARD PLAYER
EVER TO LIVE, YOU'LL BE MISSED.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

Since 1970 I have been a fan, I graduated in 1976 and Skynyrd was the ultimate band at that time, every party and woodsy (party) with friends was an opportunity to play Skynyrd (at 10+). The plane crash was heart felt and took some time to get over. Ten years later I was with you again and I felt good about the bands new beginning. I miss Ronnie, Steve and Cassie then Allen and Leon, Billy Powell at 56 WOW!!! As much as I want Skynard to continue I think you need to stick to the agreement that was made years ago. It's time, out of respect to end one of Rock-n-Rolls greatest bands. I Love you guys but It's time, Thoughts and prayers for all thanks for the memories and good times.
January 29, 2009
Mississippi sends its thought and prayers to the Powell family as well as the band and millions of fans all over the globe. I am only 26 but have always loved the music Billy made with Skynyrd. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and Billys friends. I met Billy at Hartsfield Airport some time ago, and after hesitating to "bother" him I went up and shook his hand and talked to him a brief moment. Very polite, very cordial, and a real "simple man" was my impression. Tonight, just as when Allen passed, I will pull out the One More From The Road LP, crank it up, and remember those shows I went to at the Fox. I've seen the band many, many, many times since the 70's but when that Free Bird flies tonight my thoughts will be just of Billy and his loved ones. One heck of a reunion going on in heaven! Fly High Freebird.
