Bum was someone that I wish could of been my uncle.
When in the 7th grade yu came on campus at Nederland under your old coach Elbert Pickel. The little guy that could not play in the 9th grade (to little) came around and letter two years, went to U of H, and Lamar. Was a Marine fighter pilot and had his Nam war. Wanted to protect his coach in Liberty, but McKinzie beat him to it. From and old Marine to another, we had a good ride. Semper Fi

What a great man and coach. Everyone knows that his all of his family have a lifetime of memories. May he rest in peace.
Coach Phillips was one of a kind. I will never forget how devastated I was when he was fired from Houston before New Year's eve. It takes a true coach to coach the game of football. Bless all who loved and admired this tall Texan. Now go and rest in peace.
Bum loved the game of football no matter whose team he was coaching. Controversial? Yes! Ornery? Yes! But he was a man, after you met him, you would never forget! Just ask Earl (The Pearl) Campbell, one of his former football players who played for the Houston Oilers, now, the Houston Texans. Bet he had a truckload of stories he could tell about Bum! He also coached the New Orleans Saints. Hope when Bum goes to heaven, he won't drive God and Jesus crazy, but probably will. I'm going to miss that colorful man. Bet his son, Wade, will too, and a host of others. He was a legend!
Prayers for the Phillips family. The memories, the images from the Astrodome, his everlasting persona and influence will always live. More importantly, his Christian witness was and remains noble.

All who ever met Bum knew immediately that he was the embodiment of a Texan and a man. He touched the lives of so very many people and I was fortunate to be one of them. He worked hard, played hard and lived a godly life, I will miss him and will never forget his humble spirit and zest for life. Rest in peace, Bum, we will not see your like again. PN-G Class of 1966
Great football coach but a even better man. We could use some more like him in important positions especially in Washington. A man of great integrity. I only got to get near enough to him to speak one time but he was in conversation with fellow coaches after practice in Nacadogoes one year.
Heartfelt condolences to the Phillips family. May the special memories you hold in your heart help you through this difficult time. Keeping you close in my thoughts and prayers. In Deepest Sympathy,
Laverne (Dawson) Grissom, PN-G Class of 1967
You were about the only one to give the Pittsburgh Steelers credit for their success in the 1970's. It was you who said "The road to the Super Bowl goes though Pittsburgh," a slogan that Bill Cowher lifted from you. (I also remember some kid yanked off your cowboy hat at you marched back to the locker room after a defeat in Pittsburgh.)
Thanks for the laughs, bless your Texas-sized soul!
Everyone I know has loved Bum since the days when we were in high school. My sincere condolences to Wade, Susan, and the remainder of the Phillips' family.
