Every time I watch Men of Honor, I am amazed all over again! I wish I had had the honor of meeting Mr. Carl Brashear. This many years later, we still clap at the end and are thankful all over again for the man, the hero, Mr. Carl Brashear. We pray you rest in peace, on behalf of the Hatcher family.

He put the "Honor" in honor!!! A true patriot in every sense of the word.
May 18, 2011
Carl and I worked together at the Ship Repair Facility in Guam in about 1958-60. I was the young green Ensign division officer with Carl as but one of several veteran navy divers in the division. Carl showed his fun side when he invited me to dive and watch "...some underwater welding" - and he was the one who stayed behind to make sure this young man swam back safely after the dive boat left. That's a warm, funny memory. There are more such memories of that fellow young man - who apparently forever remained the clean cut, fun-loving and hard working professional that I was blessed to work with.

God bless you and yours, Carl!
April 16, 2011

Dearest Brashear Family,
I became a commercial diver because of my love for the water and hard work, but my work ethic was was cast from the excellent example of the most honorable man I had never met that affected the diving community. Please accept the sincerest condolences of my wife and I, we know it is never easy to lose someone to death. Humans were not designed to die, please be comforted that death will soon be done away with in the near future. (Isaiah 25:8) Keep the hope alive that Carl is in the memory of Almighty God, and you will be able to see him soon and welcome him back from the dead, and enjoy life forever. Love all of yours unconditionally, live for the treasures of today, and laugh remembering all the good things Carl has left to you.
Warm Christian Love,
Eric & Michelle Strange

Master Diver Brashear was the most inspirational person I have ever read or watched a movie about.I would have given anything to have met him.To this day, I still think of him if I ever get discouraged in life. He showed how much a person can do if they have determination, wiil power and NEVER, EVER give up on what they want to do.He never gave up no matter what adversity he faced- and he faced MUCH adversity in many parts of his life, but he JUST KEPT GOING-and moving forward NO MATTER WHAT--Iadmire him more than words can say.
He inspires me and will continue to inspire me every day for the rest of my life!!!!! Anyone who was able to meet or know him should feel so blessed-- RIP Master Diver Brashear!!!!!!!
January 18, 2011
I had the great fortune to be introduced to Mr Brashear shortly after having seen the movie, and just a few years before he passed. I remember the honor I felt merely shaking his hand. Some people, no matter how high they climb, remain true to themselves. I believe Carl managed this through out his life - one that continues to teach us lessons today. Since meeting him, I've met his sons, shared lunch with Phillip recently. Carl's legacy was passed father to son among them, I'm sure... but especially to Phillip. I am so proud to be acquainted with this ongoing story. Thank you so much Carl! Your memory lives on!
January 03, 2011
I can remember when the first time I saw the the movie promo. All I could think was man i gotta take my son to see this movie. He was four years old @ the time but I knew he had too see it. Because I taught (teach) him about honor, respect, and not giving up. So thank you Mr. Brashear. Your honor lives on.
December 30, 2010

July 29, 2010
I have just watched, "Men of Honor", for the umpteenth time. When I first saw the movie some years ago, I asked my father, if he had seen it, and if he knew of Mr Brashear. He answered that he had, and that it was indeed an honor to have known him. My father served for 20yrs in the USN, and we lived in the Tidewater area all our lives, I was actually born in Portsmouth Naval, and to Mr Brashear and your family, ON BEHALF OF A GRATEFUL NATION, WE THANK YOU, SIR!
July 28, 2010
I wish I knew him personally. There are not many men of his stature. He is a great loss to humanity. If only more people could follow his character and be more like him. God surely has a place for him in Heaven.
July 16, 2010
Mr. Brashear was a man who stood for what he believe to be important to ones life. He did not allow persecution and hardship to discourage him. A man who heart was in the right place. It is good to know that he is not forgotten by the most important person, Almighty God, one day we will all see a time when we can live in true unity and peace among all people.
March 25, 2010
Mr. Brashear is an inspiration to all people. His dream was accomplished with honor and dignity. Hatred and opposition could not topple the wall built with integrity. May your family find comfort in the resurrection hope. Jesus promised all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.
March 16, 2010

I was a BM1 who served aboard the USS Hoist (ARS-40). While on board I heard the stories of Master Chief/Master Diver Brashear and how a movie was being made. I watched that movie several times and prior to his death I had the distinct pleasure of meeting him in Binghamton, NY where he had a speaking engagement. We had a great talk and as he gave his speech he called out to me, in the audience, "isn't that true Boatswainmate". I will never forget him. May he rest in peace.

Chief Brashear: i had the pleasure, honor to serve on board Hoist with you for a few short months.you struck me as a very unique and different person with lots of depth and patience for everyone.
i remember very distinctly your last words to the men on board just before leaving us for the hospital. those words were, "keep the faith". i was in awe that even with your dilemma you still had other peoples welfare on your mind.

thanks for the memories, Chief. God Speed.

Mr. Brashear, I don't think there is an end to the amount of words that could describe the man you are. I was assigned a reflective paper regarding a movie that I felt displayed a person overcoming obstacles to succeed, and there was not a doubt in my mind who I should of wrote the paper on or the movie that portrayed it. I am honored to be able to write about your life and it is with great respect to you that I would just like to say thank you Mr. Brashear for being the man you are and my heart goes out to your family with my deepest condolences and I hope where ever you are resting right now, that there's a dive suit standing by. Rest in Peace Mr. Brashear, you will be missed, but never forgotten.

I hope the country and the world realizes that we had a man of steel as well as a man of honor in our midsts in the person of Carl Maxie Brashear. His stamina, determination and final victory in pursuing a master diver carrer in the U.S. navy against tremendous obstacles attests to that. How many of us could have done what he did under the same circumstances. He makes me proud to be a member of the Brashear family and will forever be an inspiration. May God grant him eternal rest and peace.

TO THE BRASHEAR FAMILY.

MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES GOES TO THE FAMILY.

I SAW THE MOVIE "MEN OF HONOR" AND IT BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES TO SEE THE THINGS THAT THIS MAN HAD TO GO THROUGH. BUT BY THE GRACE OF GOD AND HIS DETERMINATION TO PROVE TO HIMSELF AND ALL THOSE MENS THAT HE WAS WORTHY OF THIS POSITION. HE DID WHAT WAS EXPECTED OF HIM AND MORE. HE WAS BETTER THAN ALL THE OTHER SAILORS BY A MILE. THIS IS HISTORY THAT WILL BE REMEMBERED THROUGH OUT TIME. HE WILL FOREVER BE A PART OF MY HISTORY AND WILL FOREVER BE MY HERO. HE DID THE IMPOSSIBLE AND CAME OUT ON TOP.

My deepest condolences are extended to the Brashear Family, and thanks to Carl Brashear Master Chief USN (RET). Thanks to Retired Master Chief Carl Brashear for lighting the “torch” for others to see a path to a future naval career. I am an African American mother. I am thankful his achievements; he did truly light “the Torch”. As the flame flickered that light became very significant in my son’s of fourteen years naval career; my son, ENS Dwayne Vinnett, now writes his tribute to Carl Brashear “Honor Courage Commitment began with Brother Brashear. Fellow Chief "Fair Winds and Following Seas". Thank You and I salute you Master Chief”. And now may God Bless you my brother in the Lord.

In my opinion, Mr. Brashear symbolizes the epitome of perserverance in becoming a deep sea diver. That era was indeed a trying time, but it was people like Mr. Brashear that show the world that Blacks (Negros at the times) were qualified to do extraordinary things. All we need is a chance to prove ourselves.
Mr. Brashear, I salute you!!

Master Chief Carl M. Brashear's life serves as an encouragement to all as it signifies the circumstances of your birth do not have to determine the achievements of your life. Master Chief Brashear discovered his purpose in life and achieved it through God's grace and mercy. We should not mourn his passing, but rejoice in his living. May the Lord continue to bless and keep the family.

Deepest Sympathies to the Brashear family from the Vinnett family, our prayers are with you. America has lost a true hero. My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Master Chief Brashear while attending a Black History Month Program which he was an honoree at Piney Grove in the mid 90's, and frequently ran across him at Little Creek Exchange-never to busy to stop and shake a hand and exchange brief words. I was always inspired by his humble ways and the history that went with his stoic appearance. He displayed courage, determination, and character that all should seek to emulate. I must say he is truly "A Man Of Honor". Honor Courage Committment began with Brother Brashear. Fellow Chief "Fair Winds and Following Seas". Thank You and I salute you Master Chief.
July 31, 2006
I want to convey my sincere sympathy to Mr. Brashear's family at this difficult time. I didn't know him, but from the information I read, he is a true American Hero that deseves our thanks and respect. I had an uncle that was a navy diver in the late 1930's and into the early 1940's and have a great deal of respect for all of these great American's. My service for the most part was on the ground in the Marine Corps, and I am sure that the efforts of these men helped us to complete our mission on many occasions. Again, I offer my sincere condolences to this fine family.

If the movie closely followed Mr. Brashears life, in my book he should be listed as an All American Hero. His life and accomplishments atest to what can be done when you don't give into the nay sayers. It goes without saying that his family is and should be very proud. Celebrate his life, don't mourn his death. Best wishes to the entire family.

Uncle Dit, you will be greatly missed. I thoroughly enjoyed the five years of being with you in Virginia. I met Carl on the set of the film that would eventually be called “Men of Honor.” The working title of the movie was “Navy Diver” and I think Carl would have been perfectly happy with that name. The truth is, though he might not want to admit it, Carl Brashear was a true “Man of Honor.”

Cuba Gooding, Jr. remarked on the passing of Master Chief Brashear, ''The African-American community lost a great leader today in Carl Brashear.'' I agree, but would amend those words: “America, indeed, the world lost a great leader in Carl Brashear.”

We are a better nation and a better people because Carl Brashear lived among us. May God rest his soul and bring peace to his family and many friends

I feel so honored to have known such a special man! Uncle Dit visited us quite often when we where stationed at Langley Air Force Base. Our children thought the world of him and his visits are memories that we will treasure for a lifetime. He was the only family member we had in the area so he lifted our spirits with his stories of his life and gave us the motivation to do what we had to do to surive that duty station. He gave us the very best advise on how to deal with military life! I thank God for him and his wisdom... I love you dearly and I always will. God gave me a guardian angel and his name is Master Chief Carl M. Brashear (Uncle Dit). I'll Miss you!
July 28, 2006
Master Chief Brashear is the embodiment of courage and honor. I only know of him through the movie "Men of Honor". A quiet hero overcoming all odds to be the best. I have lost a personal hero and role model to never give up.

We have lost another great Afro-American Hero. A man with a purpose. What a role model for our young Afro American youth and the generations to come. The Bible says, "It is 'God who directs the life of his creatures, everyone's life is in his power."

Master/Chief Brashear, a Man of Honor, integrity, character, strenth, courage, and determination. He was More than a Conqueror. I believe he fulfilled God's purpose for his lfe. He has made a priceless contribution especially for all Afro-American people and for the world. His life and accomplishments has had a tremendous impact on many lives, in the past, now and will continue on in the future.

"The man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder - a waif, a nothing, a no man." stated Thomas Carlyle.

Master Chief Brashear, you were a man with a purpose filled life. I was privileged to have watched the movie depicting your life and career. You made me proud! I was overwhelmed with pride as a Cape Verdean black woman.

My sympathy from the bottom of my heart to the family, relatives and friends of Master Chief Brashear.

What a remarkable Man of Honor. Only God knows the number of people, Chief, you have inspried, encouraged and impacted.

To the family of Master Chief Brashear, know that thousands of Patriot Guard Rider members across our country and American patriots around the world grieve the loss of an American Hero; a hero of stature second to none! The sacrifice, dedication and personal conviction shown by THIS incredible man demonstrates to all men that which is honorable and right!
Word has begun to spread throughout our ranks to those unable to pay honor to the Master Chief with their physical presence at his service this weekend, that this Saturday at 1200 hours, we will pause wherever we are and bow our heads in remembrance of his life and his gift to the cause of Freedom.

We veterans young and old know in our heart of hearts that, when he entered the Gates of Heaven, those warriors gone before us were informed by the angels themselves shouting, "Atten---HUT! MASTER CHIEF ON DECK!"

Rest easy, sir. We have the watch. Full sails and following seas for all of your days. You will NEVER be forgotten!
July 27, 2006
To the Brashear Family,
I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Carl Brashear. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the Master Chief years ago as I started my Naval career. As a young sailor, it was truly an honor for me to meet a legend, and the man that would go on later and change the history throughout the Navy. Today, as everyday I continue to say...thank you for paving the way for those to follow.

Master Chief, may you rest in peace. We have the watch!
July 27, 2006
We wish you God's comfort. As military retirees we are especially proud of Chief Brashear. His character and strength are worthy of emulation and his story should forever be told. Again, may God comfort you all in the sorrow of your loss and may you smile as you celebrate and remember his life.
July 27, 2006
I watched the movie about his life in the navy, and was touched. He was a very strong willed man that would not let anything hold him back from what he wanted. I only wish there were more young black men in this world that would use his strength. God bless his family and give them his strenght to get through this time.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I was a US Navy diver in the late 1960s. There were not many black divers, in fact; the only black divers I worked with were a couple of my instructors when I was in diving school. I heard the story of Carl M. Brashear and about his heroism and honor. The story was told in quiet voices full of awe and respect. The man was an exemplar, a person to emulate. Chief Brashear was a Man of Honor. He was one of my heroes. It was many years after I left the service before I learned he was Black. He is still one of my heroes. My God gently receive the soul of this brave and honorable servant and grant peace and comfort to his family.

PROUD OF MR BRASHEAR,

EARTH HATH NO SORROW THAT HEAVEN CANNOT HEAL
July 27, 2006
Since this movie's release, I've shown it to my students every year in my business class. They have to answer questions regarding character and I push them to think about the moral of the movie and the substance of the life of a great man. I'm only saddened that I did not get this letter to Mr. Brashear before his passing. So often we miss great opportunities to let people know how trully special they are, and for this, I am trully sorry! Thank you for being a great (black) man of honor and a much needed role model for our young men, young people and people in general. I learned myself the importance of sticking to something even when all the odds seem to be against you, because in the end you will definitely achieve your goal.
July 27, 2006
I never met Mr. Brashear and I say Mister with great strength and pride because to me that is who he was. To The Family of Master Chief Brashear. My kids and I had the honor of meeting Master Chief in the commissary he would love to hug them and talk. I enjoyed his stories so much until we began to meet him every two weeks just to talk. Our daughter would ask so many questions until I would leave and come back she would still be talking. His wit and wisdom to me about the things in the Navy world helped my husband excel in his Naval career as well as civilian.I was so sad when we learned we were going to tranfer to Florida. Because the kids enjoyed Master Chief and they loved him like a grandpa. I will miss seeing him when we come to visit Virginia Beach it will leave such a void in my heart. Knowing the life and legacy of Master Chief will live on. Thank you for being a hero for my kids thanks for being a such a caring person. Thanks for living a life rich and full an example that hard work pays off. Only if you dont give up or dont give in.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Given the troubled times in which Mr. Brashear joined our great military, his story should be in every history book across America. The simple grit, guts, and determination of one man set the standard for the rest of the world to follow. While I never had the pleasure of meeting the man, his story speaks volumes. I am proud to serve in a military in which a man of such distinction was able to overcome such obstacles to rise to the top. I often will reference his story to my young paratroopers who need inspiration to achieve their goals. Mr. Brashear was an example to all of us: black or white is indifferent. He lived and died serving the only colors: Red, White, and Blue

My family and I are thankful for the Bravery, Courage, Determinination and Service to fight for our country, (our freedom) from you..., my son and all the others in our armed forces for the sacrifice made for us. You all will not be forgotten.

comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of
challenge and controversy.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

MR.BRASHEAR WAS A TRUE MAN OF HONOR.
July 26, 2006
Sadly another beloved member of our black community has passed on. These members remind us of how truly difficult, it was to purse and achieve goals they set out to acommplish. But with GOD's will they were able to achieve. The content of thier character should be a constant reminder of what we should apply into our own characters. My deepest sympathy to the family members of this wonderful man!

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
July 25, 2006
I would like to send my condolences to the family and friends of Carl M. Brashear, someone that I had learned about through the movie that was based on his life experiences. I could only imagine what he may have gone through during his time as a U.S. Navy diver. I have had conversations with a former Navy serviceman who discussed his experiences in the navy and I am sure his experience was during the Vietnam War which my oldest brother, Kenneth Taylor spoke of very often. But to serve in the Navy during that time must have been an experience that most men probably did not survive because of the treatment of our people. He is the type of Hero that you just don't hear or read about in a lifetime.

Truely a remarkable individual.
July 25, 2006
My heart goes out to the family and friends of Carl Brashear for your loss. The nation has lost a true man we can all admire. We can only hope more people can learn from the life he lived.

A man of remarkable talent and held steadfast in his beliefs. Not only a representation of "Never giving up" but truly a symbol of pure determination. Your family will continue to be in my prayers.
