I just saw this story on ESPN. My son told me to watch it. It really made an impression on him. His dad is a firefighter and my son is involved in sports. Wish I could have known Capt. Mulkey. Every mother wishes their son could have someone like that in their life.My prayer is that the families will continue to feel God's hand on them. My heart does go out to all of the families.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Nine Less and More

Nine less ordinary men to reach out and to feel,.
Nine more men demonstrated extraordinary ideals.

Nine less family men with hearts filled with love,
Nine more, with eyes watching and guiding from above.

Nine less pair of firemen’s boots filled in the ranks,
Nine more examples inspiring others for which we give thanks.

Nine less laughter and high jinks among friends and brothers,
Nine more memories of good times will be treasured by others.

Nine less whose loss we will always mourn,
Nine more heroes, to look up to, have been born.

Words do not adequately describe the sadness I feel when I think of this tragedy. I pray that God Blesses all of these fallen heroes families and friends during their time of need.

We apologize for being late to this guest book. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and co-workers of these brave firefighters who put other's lives ahead of their own. What noble and valorous kindred there are among this dedicated, steadfast group. God Bless All of Them.

“Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue" (a saying credited to Admiral Nimitz when he referred to the Marines victory at Iwo Jima in March, 1945) can certainly be applied to this wonderful group of firefighters.

We pray the Tender Mercies, Blessings, and Love of God be forever with the families, friends, and co-workers of ...
... Bradford "Brad" Baity,
Mike Benke,
Melven Champaign,
James "Earl" Drayton,
Michael French,
William "Billy" Hutchinson,
Mark Kelsey,
Louis Mulkey,
and Brandon Thompson.

For this same group's families, friends, and co-workers we ask our Lord Jesus Christ to ever apply His Healing and Peace.

Also, may the Comfort and Guidance of the Holy Spirit continue with these family members, friends, and co-firefighters.

John 14:16 ( King James Bible )
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Isaiah 26:3 ( King James Bible )
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Psalm 23:4 ( King James Bible )
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

God be with the families of these fallen heroes. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I only knew one of the Fallen Fireman, which was Louis Mulkey. He was a person who truly touched my heart in more ways than one. And I can only imagine how the other eight Fallen Firemen have touched other peoples hearts and changed their lives. They all died in tragedy, but will be rembered forever. I still cant believe that this has happened. You would never think that in this great city you would lose 9 brave courageous men all at once. My prayers and thoughts are with all the family and friends. They were all heroes.

Not that long ago I was a resident of Worcester, Massachusetts. We lost 6 firemen in a huge warehouse fire a few years ago. (I worked with a woman whose brother was one of the fallen men.) I haven't felt such horror, sadness and this might sound strange, but PRIDE, until I heard about these 9 brave men who also fell in the line of duty. My heart goes out to all the families of these men. Keep your pride in them alive...it will replace the sadness and help you learn how to move forward in peace. You will all be in my prayers. God Bless

Gone But Not Forgotten
Brother when you weep for me
Remember that it was meant to be Lay me down and when you leave Remember I'll be at your sleeve.

In every dark and choking hall I'll be there as you slowly crawl
On every roof in driving snow
I'll hold your coat and you will know

In cellars hot with searing heat At windows where a gate you meet
In closets where young children hide
You know I'll be there at your side

The house from which I now respond Is overstaffed with heroes gone
Men who answered one last bell
Did the job and did it well

As firemen we understand. That death's a card dealt in our hand
A card we hope we never play. But one we hold there anyway.
That card is something we ignore As we crawl across a weakened floor
For we know that we're the only prayer For anyone that might be there

So remember as you wipe your tears. The joy I knew throughout the years

As I did the job I loved to do
I pray that thought will see you through.

My heart and prayers go out to all of the nine firefighter families. As a sibbling of a 9/11 firefighter I know the pain and confusion you are all expierencing right not. No words will comfort you. Take comfort in each other. That is what helped me get through the dark days of the World Trade Center attack. You are not alone in your pain and suffering. Firefighters are a unique breed that will always be there to help and guide you through these times. Turn to them as I did. May you find some peace someday and please never lose the memories of the ones you lost. They will carry you through. As my heart breaks and I see the images on tv it reminds me of my own sorrow. May peace and comfort come to you all. I pray for all of your firefighter members.
June 22, 2007
They displayed the level of bravery that we only hope we can when faced with that type situation. Rest in peace BROTHERS.

June 22, 2007
Each day firefighters say "good-bye" to their familes and cross the threshold into their firehouse unknowing what lies ahead. They willingly accept those dangers to save a stranger and protect property. Although firefighters personally accept these risks their families assume the same and hope for the firefighters safe return the next day. These firefighters died doing what they loved, helping others. Firefighters are often thought of as ordinary people doing extraordinary work. I know, firefighters are extraordinary people doing what they consider to be ordinary work. God bless the families and thank you for giving us these willing heroes.

June 21, 2007
God bless these brave firefighters. I know that they will truly be missed by so many children, young adults, and older adults. To each of the families know that God has a special plan for them. I am a school teacher in Goose Creek and know how many children looked up to them. Any time that speakers are needed to talk with scout groups or class groups the firefighters are always willing to step up and come speak. I know that all of those children who were lucky enough to hear any of the 9 firefighters will always remember their message and hold a special place in their hearts. Not only were they angels here on earth I know they are angels in heaven and the children in heaven are dancing with them. God bless the families and certainly God bless these wonderful men.

God has a plan for each of us in our lives. He knows the exact day and the time in which he will call us home. Unfortunately, he called nine good men home in the same day. These nine firefighters are HERO'S....the reward for each of these men will be waiting for them when they reach heaven for the scarifice they gave before they left this world. May those that are left behind look to our Savior, Jesus Christ, to find comfort, strength, and know that he is always with us. He knows the lost you have suffered. He wipes away our tears, he embraces us with his loving arms. He will never forsake us because he loves us so. My thoughts and prayers go out to each family and to the surviving firefighters who will have to deal with this loss also. May you find comfort knowing there are so many of us that care about you and the great loss of life you have suffered. Great Hero's such as these men will NEVER be forgotten.

If tears could build a stairway And memories were a lane We would walk right up to Heaven and bring you back again

No farewell words were spoken No time to say goodbye You were gone before we knew it And only God knows why

Our hearts still ache in sadness And secret tears still flow What it meant to lose you No one will ever know

But know we know you want us To mourn for you no more To remember all the happy times Life still has much in store

Since you'll never be forgotten We pledge to you today A hallowed place within or hearts Is where you'll stay

You will be forever "Our Hero's"
My Prayer is that God Bless these families for the days ahead.
June 21, 2007

Firefighters go out in the worst weather, hot, cold, icy, or snowy to answer the call.

They give us the luxury to sleep in peace knowing they will take care of an emergency no matter what, should it arise.

These guys are to be respected, and admired for putting their lives on the line for their communities daily in this country, as first responders.

Please join me in a moment of silence on Friday 06/22/07 at 12 noon to remember these great men, and honor their families in Charleston, SC.

When I heard the news of nine firefighters losing their lives in a fire, I was so upset that I did not hear where the fire was...my son, Bill, is a firefighter in Horry County and all I could think of was "Could it be MY son"?

After I heard it happened in Charleston, I was somewhat releaved but my heart ached for the mother that did lose her son, for the wife that lost her loving husband and for the child that lost his dad.

May beautiful memories bring you comfort in this time of grief.
Each of you are in the hearts of those who care about you and share in your loss.

May the sorrow that you are feeling today be eased by the sweetness of precious memories...MEMORIES ARE A GIFT FROM GOD THAT DEATH CANNOT DESTROY.

Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty,
Wherever flames may rage,
Give me the strenght to save a
life,
Whatever be it's age.

Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late,
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and
To give the best of me,
To guard my every neighor and
Potect his property.

And if according to God's will
I must answer death's call,
Bless with your protecting hand,
My family one and all.

To the families of the Charleston Firefighters:

I share my heartfelt sympathy to all the firefighters, friends, and families. It is such a tragedy and a great loss to our nation. You are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless all of you. Here is a poem I wrote about firefighters expressing my feelings. Thank you and God bless you!

The Dedicated, Flaming Hearts

Did you ever ask firemen, “What’s it all about?”
Did you wonder if they ever have a doubt?
When the alarm blasts and they don their gear,
What is on their minds, are they full of fear?

They go about their business each and every day.
Put their lives on the line, never stop and say,
“Are the walls very sturdy, will the roof cave in?”
The fire is extremely hot, it’s our job to the end.

They do their jobs out of love, not for fame,
For the men and women, it is all the same.
You never hear them ask, “What’s in it for me?
And will everyone remember all our good deeds!”

Be it firemen or paramedics they go hand in hand,
They put their lives on the line throughout this land.
Whether an airplane, building, forest, or house fire,
Charging to our rescue, heavy gear is their attire.

It takes a special kind of person to do what they do,
More times than not the odds are against them too.
When the call comes in for them to save the day,
They put their lives on the line for us in every way.

When you see lights flashing or meet them on the road,
Pull off the street, say a prayer, help carry their heavy load.
With the adrenalin pumping and their hearts pounding fast,
As turmoil surrounds them, kindly let them pass.

Please let us remember each and every day,
The people who try to help us in every way.
From an accident, to hurricanes, or pets in a tree,
Whatever the circumstances, they are here for you and me!

So give them a Thank You, for a job well done!
Stop in to tell them, whether at a store or on the run.
They need to know we appreciate all the good deeds,
The unsung heroes, on duty or off, they’re what we need!

My son is a volunteer firefighter here in Horry County. As a mother, I am concerned about his safety on a daily basis; however, I see the gleem in his eyes when he tells the stories of helping/rescuing others. God has shown him the path he is to follow. Firefighters are truly "angels" here on earth. My prayers and thoughts are with you during this time but remember each fallen firefighter was doing what he loved to do. Helping others! God Bless and may his love comfort you.
June 20, 2007
To the families of the lost firefighters, you are all in my prayers. Your loved ones unselfishly gave themselves, and paid the ultimate price in their service to help others. They will not be forgotten. Certainly not by you, their family and friends, but by others, like myself, who never had the good fortune to meet them. The testimonies they gave will always be remembered. God bless.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I am so sorry for your loss. I suffered the same loss in July of 1984. My father was a Fire Captain in Edison, NJ and he died in a building collapse too. Just know that your loved ones died doing the job that they loved and with time, it will get better. I was and always will be proud of my father. No one understands better than the families of Fire Fighters what an important job they provide. May god bless you and your family.
June 20, 2007
As a friend of one of these fallen fire fighters, my heart goes out to all family and friends of all the 9 heros that demonstrated such fearless bravery that dreadful day. My heart is broken as so many others are, but we must keep the memories alive and remember they are in a better place. These 9 men will never be forgotten. Not only by those close to them but by all of America. I am keeping them all in my prayers as well as family and friends. Stay strong. They are looking over us and will remain in our hearts.
June 20, 2007
To all my fallen brothers, their families and friends....

A Token of Respect

Shoulder to shoulder they work
for eachother and for all
Through wind rain and snow
they answer the call
Their very lives entrusted
to their brothers who care
Knowing if they fall
at least one will be there
A breed apart from others
these men who fight fire
A calling to which many
would love to aspire
But they as firemen
know all too well
that in a moment's time
their lives can be hell
A soft spongy roof
or room full of smoke
it takes only one breath
and you start to choke
They do their job willingly
ask little more than respect
often picking up the pieces
of lives that are wrecked
Their calling is to be there
Where ever the need
A very noble calling
of the men of this breed
Many have fallen
and have given their all
Trying to save another
they took the fall
Truly these men are heroes
for having paid the price
And making for another
the supreme sacrifice
So if in your travels
A fireman you see
Please remember he's there
to save you and me.

June 20, 2007
"Hey mom,!" He yelled from the attic door, "What's these old heavy boots and hard hat for?"

With a lump in her throat and a tear stained cheek, His mother swallowed and started to speak.

"Come here my son," his mother said, "There's things to tell when I clear my head."

The past raced madly through her mind; She searched her heart, the words to find.

At last she sighed and rubbed his hair, And the words that followed I'd like to share.

"Those boots and hat," she said with pride, "Were worn by a man with grit inside.

He wore them to help people in need, Though facing danger, would never concede.

Many a time in the dead of the night, He jumped in those boots and flashed out of sight.

To answer a call and not knowing for sure What danger or heartache he may have to endure.

Your father, my son, was not like most dads, It was mainly because of the job that he had.

His life was devoted to all of mankind, And just why he choose it, is not clear in my mind.

I've often regretted the life that we led, When every third night I was alone in our bed.

But your mother is proud to say she was a part Of a man who possessed such a courageous heart.

Though, for all his discomfort and all of his pain The time he spent here was never in vain.

So the memories I've kept and the love I will save Are small consolations for the life that he gave.

Your father's days here made other's seem brighter, For your father, my son, was a Firefighter."

Our thoughts and prayers are with you through this difficult time.

The Lords Fire Fighters;

I'll lend you, for a little time, a Firefighter of mine he said, For you to love the while he lives, and mourn for when he's dead, It may be Ten years, or twenty two or more, But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me.

He will bring his charms to gladden you and should he stay be brief, You'll have his lovely memories or solace for your grief, I cannot promise he will stay since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down there I want this him to learn.

I've looked this wide world in search of teachers true, and from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes, I have selected you, now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain, nor hate me when I come to call him back again.

I fancied that I heard them say, "Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done". For all the joy the he shall bring, the risk of grief will run. Will shelter him with tenderness, will love him while we may, and for the happiness we've known, forever grateful stay.

But shall the angels call for him much sooner then we've planned, Will brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.
June 20, 2007
May our Lord in heaven comfort all those grieving families, including all the firemen and officials. Only God can bring healing and solace. May they learn to lean on Him as never before.

Words cannot express how I feel these days after learning of the deaths of the fallen firefighters. I can only revel in the fact that I was lucky enough to have known Louis and enjoy his magnetic personality - you just wanted to be near him - he was ALWAYS smiling. He made Burn Camp (Aluminum Cans for Burned Children) so incredibly special not only for the children but the adults - he touched so many lives. I am so thankful these men put their lives on the line EVERYDAY to protect us. My heart is filled with extreme sadness for the families and the firemen those fallen left behind; my thoughts and prayers will be with these families/friends/brothers during the most difficult times ahead. As everyone before me has said, "Charleston will not forget these HEROES just as we will not forget 9/11 - they did NOT die in vain." You will be missed by MANY. Thank you for protecting my family and me.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten and always be held in the hearts of the people of North Carolina and the entire United States as a whole.

When everyone else is running out, these brave men & women are running in. Our dad (Howard R. Schmitt, Sr.) was a Battalion Chief for the Albany, NY fire department (and a member for over 30 years). His father was a member as well. Both men died in the line of duty. We can empathize with the families of the lost firefighters. Our deepest sympathies go out to their families, friends, and the Charleston Fire Department family. Please remember to thank our brave men & women in the firefighting industry - everyday - not just when you need them. They are always waiting and ready to aid you. With heartfelt sympathy,
Howie (& Maryann) Schmitt, Jr., Peg Schmitt (& Larry) Hunt, Mary Schmitt (& Scott) Longtin, and Susan Schmitt (& Russ) Monegue.

Please know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers. We would like to share the following prayer with all of you:
The Firefighter's 23rd. Psalm

The Lord is my Chief.
He has chosen me to serve.
He leads me to still the fires
raging around me.
He restores my soul to fight even
when all seems lost.
He has prepared for me a place in
life,
Devoted to service, honor, joy and
fellowship.
He annoints my soul with courage
in the presence of my enemy fire
Yes, even though I have chosen to
walk through life in the shadow
of death,
I will fear no fire, for He is
with me.
His strength will comfort me.
And, when life's final alarm for
me has sounded,
I will dwell in the station house
of the Lord forever.
Amen

June 20, 2007
In this world that we live in it's young men like these that remind us that points of light still do shine. My mother worked for the fire deparment for 18 years and passed away over a year ago, I have no doubt, that when they crossed from this world to the other she was there to say welcome home my friends.
June 20, 2007
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Almighty God must have needed nine brave souls at that moment in time. We cannot understand why these things happen...perhaps because we are only human. We are supposed to hold their memory. We must delight in the chances we had to love them. We can weep...thanking them for not only touching our lives...but that they had the call and the willingness to save our lives, as well. I will weep. And I will remember them.

I live in Worcester , MA . In December 1999 our city lost 6 firefighters in a storage warehouse blaze . What was really horrific about this tragedy is that they were searching for people inside and there was no one in there . It brought tears to my eyes when I saw this on the news yesterday. It took a very long time for our community to recover from this tragedy . God bless the survivors and thanks to all firefighters worldwide for the job that they do .

Always at your beck and call.
Vigilant and unafraid.

At the ringing of a bell.

A Firefighter's Prayer

When I answer a call,
I never know what my fate may be
So, as I run out the door,
I ask God to watch over me
No matter what I may face
and the danger that awaits
I Just say a little prayer
'cause in His hands lie my fate
By doing this, I feel a little bit safer
If you need a reason, this is what I pray for :

I pray for my fellow firefighters and me
I pray for our families
I pray for my mom and my dad
And what a wonderful life I have
I pray for a safe return
And that no one gets burned
I pray that no matter what ill fate
Our lives to take, God will wait
But, if He doesn't, we shall unserstand
Why God had to take such a brave man

A couple of seconds is all it takes...
June 20, 2007

Firefighters Prayer

When I am called to duty, God
Whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age,
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect his property
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your
protecting hand
My children and my wife.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

What small condolence it may offer to the family and loved ones of our fallen brothers, please let me post this prayer from an unknown author:
When I am called to duty, God
Whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age,
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect his property
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your
protecting hand
My children and my wife.

To Charleston Families, Friends, Relatives and Firefighters:

You Son, Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, Friend is not far from you, he is always within ear shot. You can whisper he shall hear. He is that ray of sunshine beating down on you or that Butterfly flying around you just letting you know he is OKAY. I mourn with you and will continue to pray for you all, that some how you will gain strength and reminisce of their memories and find laughter once again from something they may have done or said. Again our condolences to you All...

To the Firefighters:

God needed you all, something we never want to believe but he has a place for you each in the Heavenly Skies. I know he has met and spoke with each of you at the Heavenly Gates and each of you responded with open arms. Thank you for your job performed here on earth and remember to daily whisper something to your families left behind - even if it is sarcasim. We Love You All.

"The Bravest" are the Firefighters. After 343 FDNY Firefighters perished on September 11th 2001, NYC Newpapers asked ordinary citizens to attend memorial services. There were so many every day that the Heros of FDNY needed help from regular citizens, and I was able to attend 5 memorial services. The mournful sound of Amazing Grace on the bagpipes will last forever in my mind. I hope the good citizens of SC can also attend their FD memorial services, the Heros of Charleston FD needs your support as they remember their brave comrades lost in this tragedy.

From a poem inscribed on a plaque that hangs in the fire station where I grew up and served as a volunteer in PA:

Here's to firefighters all.
Always at your beck and call.
Vigilant and unafraid.
Volunteer or city paid.
Battling a raging hell,
At the ringing of a bell.
Unknown heroes clad in blue,
They give up their lives for you.
So pray for them as they go past,
For every ride may be their last.

The text dates the poem, but the last line is as true today as it was many years ago when the poem was composed.

Today, firefighters past and present grieve for our lost brothers and pray for their families and those who remain on duty to serve and protect us.

God bless you all!
June 19, 2007

To the families of the nine fallen fire fighters of Charleston, SC,to the Officers, men and women of the Charleston Fire Department and to the citizens of Charleston, SC may I offer the most sincere condolences on behalf of myself and my brothers and sisters of Local 867, United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg, I.A.F.F. This past February 4th, trajedy struck our department when we lost two Captains and injured four other firefighters in a fatal house fire. The outpouring of love and support from the City, our Province, the rest of our nation and the respect shown by the attendance of firefighters from throughout the United States and Canada at the memorial service held, is still talked about. Firefighters and their families are renowned for the compassion and sincerity of their condolences at the times these trajedies strike. The firefighters from Charleston will, like the phoenix, rise from the ashes of this fire and become stronger as a result. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your families and your city. With the arm of God around each of the nine heroes, they are safe and sound in the kingdom of heaven.
