My heart breaks for your family, Daniel. We will not forget your brave service to our country or your ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms. I know you rest in Peace. May your family find Peace for themselves and eventual healing from the pain of losing you. God Bless You all.
Rich and I knew, you were a special young man, from the moment we met you. You and Nat were the cutest couple. Thank you, for sharing your life and love for our daughter with us. And thank you for the memories of you, here, in our home, and all around Newport News, Virginia. And thank you for serving our country, for you made the ultimate sacrifice. Time with you, was too short, for you had an abundance of love of life to share. Our hearts ache for you, our Nat, your Mom and Dad, and all the family, friends. No matter what I say, here, it wouldn't be enough to even capture what we feel about you, or for you, because we love you so very much. The pain in our hearts today, seems harder as time is passing. We will do our best to help take care of Natalie. You are missed every day, and will continue to be missed for the rest of our lives. I find some comfort in knowing, my Mom and Dad must have been eager to meet you in Heaven, when you arrived. Until we all meet again...I know you are here, in spirit with all of us.
God bless you, Danny, forever.
Love always, your mom (in-law) and dad ( in-law) XOXO

Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I'm home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I'm only a civilian
And I don't even know if it's allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn't make it home.
I know you're in God's presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

Hi Danny, we never got a chance to meet in person, but I am your grandmother-in-law and have heard some amazing things about you. You were loved by so many because of the wonderful person you are and will be remembered forever. Rest in peace grandson and I hope to meet you in Heaven one day.
All my love and respect to you Danny! Thank you for your service. God has you in his keeping, and your family has you in their hearts! I know you will be watching over all of them, especially your mom. I see your memory living on through her every day. Rest in peace.
Danny, You were an amazing person to have had in my life and I feel blessed to have had you in it. Though it was far to brief, the days our families spent together sharing beautiful memories will always be with me, and will forever be my looking glass to glance in to so I can remember and feel the kind heart you shared with all of us. You were an incredibly funny and kind person and I saw it every time we camped or shared a holiday as a family,not connected by blood but by something even stronger, love. My heart breaks knowing I,ll never share another warm embrace with you but I will always hold you in my heart. We love you and will always remember you.
Many summers ago we watched you grow from a boy to a man. In that time, we got to know the young man who has become a hero, our hero. We never knew who you would become. Humble, kind, smart, funny, loving, caring, understanding, worldly, and strong. All the traits that we wish we had, but you managed to put into your person; what a good man you became, what good man you taught us to be. We never knew what that really meant until we met you many years ago and yet you were that kid, and you were always the old soul, with all that knowledge just waiting to share it with us.
We remember the fishing trips, one million we are sure, with nothing to show for them but memories a blur. There will always be a single fishing pole next to our chair, for you. We'll meet you at the lake.
Love Gena and Ted

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms, SPC Daniel Lewis Carlson, U.S. Army. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Danny. And to Danny it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. Danny you gave the last full measure of devotion for what you believed in and fought for. No greater love and patriotism are shown than when a man lays down his life in service to his country. Danny, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,261 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Danny's family and loved ones.
