Denny - I had the good fortune to sit behind you during a production of "Mrs. Robinson" in Beverly Hills about 10 years ago. During the intermission I approached you and you were as nice as could be. I felt as if I had known you my entire life. Thanks for being a gentleman and not dashing my dream of meeting you. Thank you too for your lilting voice; truly the signature of a generation. You will never be forgotten, I can assure you of that. God Bless.

My mom, my grandfather and I used to talk to Mr. Doherty (Denny) when they had their coffee at Meadowvale Town Centre at the Second Cup. I was only a little girl but I remember he and my family sharing a table and talking about the current events. Such a humble man he was! I knew he was somebody famous but I never got into 'The Mamas and the Papas' until I was in my teens. I vaguely remember some conversation about how learning music is good for the mind...perhaps this is part of the reason why I am more apt to learn the guitar. I know his spirit is all around his family and the people who so loved him. I only wish I knew him better. From what my mom and grandpa said, he was a gracious man and it seems that he would chat with anyone. Blessings! -Angela Joyce

For Denny...one-quarter of the 1960s folk-rock group the Mamas and the Papas, known for their soaring harmony on hits like "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

The greats are slowly going. I loved them too. Remember how we would sing these tunes at home in Timmins. They inspired me ti sing. I now have memorized about 100 of Dylan's songs, even the 10 minute ones and I am doing radio commercials, au francais.

Today is your birthday

Today is your birthday
without candles and cake.
And since you are not with us,
we will not celebrate.
We cannot send you a birthday card,
your hands we cannot touch.
So we ask God to give a message
to the one we love so much.
And grant us one wish
and make it come true.
To have His choir of Angels sing
Happy Birthday to you.

I spent many wonderful times with Denny at his house on Appian Way and with Linda Woodward. Denny will be so missed by many but thankfully we can still listen to his music and enjoy our memories. His daughter Jessica has opened her heart to so many of us and made us a part of her life now that her father has passed and I am very grateful for that kindness.

We've lost not just a great voice and a talented artist but also a great man and a lovable and generous friend who lived his life with a great deal of grace and style. Denny once gave me his gold chain to pawn so I could get an apartment (yes, I returned it) and another time showed up with a van to help me move. A rare kind of friend. Everyone who Denny loved Denny and misses him.
March 12, 2007
I remember sitting in a diner on Park Avenue in Montreal and hearing "Monday Monday" and "California Dreaming". My friend and I just looked at each other and knew we were hearing something very special. It's a moment I'll always remember. Denny, you were the best.
February 24, 2007
To Denny's family:
Thank you for sharing Denny with us (his fans) over the years. It is so nice to read the comments from those who knew him that the best male voice ever belonged to such a wonderful and down to earth person. I have loved his music since I was a girl in the 60's; it will live on in the hearts of all of us who were touched by him. I hope Denny knew how much he was loved and admired. Sincerest Sympathies to his family on your great loss.
February 23, 2007
Denny's death was such a shock to me, as John's was before his, and Cass's all those years ago. To Denny's family: Remember, as you and your loved ones and the rest of us are saying, “There he goes,” think about those on the other side who are rejoicing, “Here he comes!” Long live Denny the Dancing Bear.

Jessica,

We will miss your dad, Denny, and his gentle yet strong voice. But we were blessed to enjoy his wonderful talent and the words he and your mom, Linda, left with us...

I’ll sing my yesterdays to you, those memories will stay with you.
All your tears will fall behind, leave them for the love you’ll find.

Thinking of tomorrow I can’t help but feel with certainty
that you will find within yourself the happiness you want to be.

I can’t bring these things to you, that’s something only you can do.
All your tears will fall behind, leave them for the love you’ll find.

God bless Denny and your family.

Peace & love,
Patty & Gary McWhirter

To Denny’s family and friends,

In this time of loss I do hope it is a comfort to you to know that there are so many of us to whom Denny was a like good friend we had never met. His spirit reached out through his voice and resonated within us. He made magic with his friends. He made the world a better place. We miss him too.

I have appreciated the music Denny Doherty made, and his wonderful spirit that has given life to so many projects in his career...
His recordings of music and drama will go on. May his wonderful spirit live on through his family and friends.
February 03, 2007
It is hard to say a fianl goodbye to someone who has been a part of my
life for over forty years. I had the honor of meeting Denny a few times during that span. Those times will always be very special memories. One of my best memories will be talking with Denny over the telephone during the writing of "Go Where You Wanna Go" (by Mathew Greenwald, 2002). Denny
always had time to help others. One terrific guy!
February 02, 2007
I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting Denny a couple of times and was always inspired by his kindness and humor. The memories and songs that he leaves behind will continue to inspire generations, I just know it. Thank You, Denny.
February 02, 2007
Jessica, I was a fan of your Dad that was my era. I didn't realize however that Denny was your dad until Linda told me. Our prayers are with you, and I want you to know that you have a family here at New Hope. We love you in the Lord

Jessica, I loved the Mama's and Papa's - their sound and music before I ever dreamed my little boy would some day be your husband. Denny will be missed by everyone who was touched by his life. We love you .... Linda & Bill
February 02, 2007
What struck me most about Denny was his down to earth atittude. After spending hours talking with him, I saw a man who understood his place in history but was still able to be a normal grandpa. I'm looking forward to hearing that voice again in the heavenly choir.
February 02, 2007
I really enjoyed meeting Denny. Those times at your home, Jessica were great fun. He will be missed.
February 02, 2007
I am so sorry, I did not get to see Dream a little Dream. I always loved talking to Denny on the phone because he had a way of making me smile. The last time I saw Denny was in Halifax and I remember it like it was yesterday. I will never forget him and he will always be remembered in my home. My five year old son is always asking me to play Creeque Alley that is his favorite. My heart goes out to Jessica, John and Emberly.
February 02, 2007
Denny was truly the finest voice of our time, and my personal inspiration as a singer.

He will be greatly missed and always remembered.
February 01, 2007
When they say Denny was a real, sincere, down-to-earth person, trust me....those aren't just token words. Denny opened up my eyes and my world to quality singing, folk music, and people who would have a spiritual impact on me for the rest of my life. His family are wonderful people, too....may the music and the man live on.
February 01, 2007
denny doherty was the best voice ever put on record the voice of a angel,to he family i am so sorry for your lost. i am sure at this time you will find suport and love.
my heart goes out to you.

the past few week for us fans have been full of heart ach. i wrote the words for you below.

hugs to you all maggie

The moon was still, the night air was soft
But inside I felt so lost
I miss that soft hand
That loving hug
The laughter in the air

The rocky road of life we live
And we give all that we can give
I miss the tales you told
I miss the sound of your voice
I am lost with out your love
On the inside the thunder and lighting hits
And digs a hold so big, I think I could loss control of it

But the healing winds I am sure will come
A word can mean so much
Times will fly
That I know
We have no control
Of those that died
We weep our heart out, until it seems
We cry a river of tears
And the years will come
But I know deep in my heart
The love I have for you will never leave me no matter what,
I will love you
Forever and ever and a bit more

February 01, 2007
Denny Doherty, I wonderful man and a gentle uncle to me. Denny was one of a kind and was always willing to help if asked. Denny had many accomplishments but his true accomplishment was being Denny and keeping true to who he was even with fame. Denny will be greatly missed by many including me.
February 01, 2007
Tops of my list of regrets - never meeting Denny Doherty (or seeing him in concert). It is due to his voice that I was first California Dreamin'. So powerful a voice that I moved from Wisconsin to California when I was 22. I grew to love all the music he ever made, and am grateful to have a personalized picture of him along with all his great songs. I am sad for what might have been, but will only appreciate more what is because of Denny.
February 01, 2007
It has been a sad several days since the news of Denny's passing away. I've been collecting my own thoughts and have been praying for his children and siblings and other friends during this week of goodbyes and reminiscing. While this is an heartening part of the grieving process, I know it is also demanding emotionally and physically. Yet, when you are mourning, there is a strange sense in that's what you want to do or need to do.
Denny would not have been one for too much bereavement. When Linda died it was with music and memories that he and others said their farewells. I think the tentatively planned upcoming musical tributes to him in Toronto and perhaps Halifax and Los Angeles would be Denny's thing.

"I ran away with the circus" is how Denny once described himself to me about twenty five years ago. That image has always stuck in my mind. If you consider his growing up days in Halifax, his working in the pawn shop there, his leaving Nova Scotia with The Colonials/Halifax Three and ulitmately The Mamas and Papas years and afterwards up on Appian Way you get a glimpse of what a whirl it was for him. He always seemed bemused and amused by it.

Being a father and a husband, and being a friend were as important to Denny as anything he achieved professionally. His high value for honesty and his innate sense of what was fair were part of him every day.

He was a faithful and true friend to me and just a few weeks ago took an especial heartfelt interest in me and my personal life when we had one of our many periodic phone visits.

Michelle called him a "blithe spirit" once, and that's the truth as well. Denny was merry and shrewd all in the same man. His charm captivated you as he told you a story or sang you a song.

These words from his 1970 song Gathering the Words seem to fit as I try to gather the words to express how much I'll miss him.

I'll sing my yesterdays to you
These memories will stay with you
All your tears will fall behind

Love and prayers-Richard Campbell

January 28, 2007
From the time I was small growing up in Halifax Denny Doherty was a hero of mine. Seeing him for the first time on the Ed Sullivan show being introduced by Sullivan, was a thrill which I have never forgotten. To hear the Mamas and Papas mention Halifax in the song (I think it was Dancin' In the Street)made me so proud.I was never lucky enough to actually meet Denny and while I have spent the last thirty years in Northern Newfoundland I have continued to follow his career as though he were not just a friend but a member of the family. My sympathies to his family and friends and may God Bless you all. Denny's music will continue to touch people's lives in special ways.
January 27, 2007
What a beautiful legacy this man and his friends left us.Their words and harmonies will always sound as sweet as the first time i heard them. Denny, give Cass a hug for me.

The pure harmonies inspired me to sing along quietly, then when older follow the harmonies to quartet singing. The words and music will continue to play in my heart in mind - Canada and the world will never forget you and your gifts!

January 21, 2007
The Mamas and Papas had a huge influence on people from my generation. In 1965, I won an LP in a radio contest on CFOX for identifying the, then obscure and unknown, singers of California Dreaming, but my love for the group and their music started even before that. Their songs became part of my life and, even now, over forty years later, vivid memories come flooding back when I play or hear their music. Their songs were beautiful, poetic songs of loves won and lost, the very same lives and experiences that we were actually living. Their songs were reassuring to a generation wrapped round with the JFK assassination, the Vietnam War, the Better Dead than Red debate, Big Brother, the Cold War, the Eve of Destruction.

I hope you knew, Denny, how proud we were of you for what you achieved in the American music industry, right in the middle the British Invasion.

Thank you so much. You helped me, and people just like me, through some tumultuous times. I am sad to hear of your passing, and I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to your family and to people close to you.

I am so proud that a fellow Haligonian did so well, and made such great 60's music that will last forever in our hearts and minds. Give Cass a big Heaven-hug for all us M&P fans!

Remembering Denny when he used to visit a nightspot in Monterey called Alices Restaurant. I was an aspiring singer/guitarist and he watched my set of music and gave me pointers on how to strum my guitar. It really helped and I went on to play for another 25 years after that fateful day with other musical groups. Thanks Denny
I used to fantasize about being in the Mamas and the Papas when I was a little girl, you were the greatest
inspiration to me. Rest sweet spirit of light.

Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

so iam sorry
January 20, 2007
I was in high school in Dallas, TX when the Mama & Papas were making their hits. The voices of Denny & Cass carried the group's sound. If memory serves me right, John Phillips recruited Denny because of his strong voice and Denny recruited Cass to the Mamas & Papas. Denny will always be alive in their recordings he left for us to listen to. His family and friends should be very proud of his important role in musical history.
January 20, 2007
To the Doherty children and family,
Our deepest sympathy to all of you on the passing of Denny. We have enjoyed hearing his sweet, soothing voice for many, many years and will continue doing so each time we play a Mama/Papa's song. May you in time find peace and comfort knowing Denny will forever live on through his music.
Affectionately,

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

How well I remember the influence of Denny and the rest of his group. Growing up in the 50's & 60's meant something. The music was pure and real. I still sing along with the oldies as do my children. I hope you all join together and Rock out in Rock and Roll Heaven. Godspeed.

I'm totally beside myself, trying to grasp that Denny has passed away. I recall with fondness meeting him this past summer. I attended the very last Cleveland performance of "Dream a Little Dream," and boy, am I glad I did!! What a pleasure it was to meet him, shake hands, smooze, and have a picture taken together. I'm looking at it right now. But, more importantly, was Denny's contribution to the world, and we are better for it. Stardom aside, it all comes down to one person sharing their gift, and trying their best to make an impact. Without question, Denny did that, and he will be missed greatly!!!
