We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Lee Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Prayer Shawls 4 Fallen Soldiers ( is an organization with groups throughout the country who strive to send handmade prayer shawls and/ or lap robes to families who have lost a loved one in service to our country. Members of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, PA would like to honor your son and husband's sacrifice and memory by sending our prayers and comfort through a shawl which we will mail to you. If you are interested, please contact me at with the names and addresses and what they would like to receive. We will send them as soon as possible. Also, if you know of any other families who are grieving the loss of a loved one who died serving our country, please pass along my e-mail address, as our organization can no longer get family contacts through the military. May God bless you and comfort you in the days ahead. Sincerely, Lynne

To the Family of SSgt. Dick Lee: My heart breaks for your loss. This nation owes so much to the brave men and women throughout our history who have given their lives to protect our freedom.

My family and I understand your pain very well, being a two-time Gold Star family. Our nephew, Capt. Timothy Moshier, and our son-in-law, Sgt. Benjamin Portell, were both killed in action in Iraq.

I want you to know that Sgt. Lee and all his loved ones are in our prayers.
We pray for the repose of his soul and for peace for your family.

Thank you for his service - and yours.

To the Family of SSgt. Dick Lee, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one. I am grateful to the brave men and women in uniform who choose to serve our country and I thank him for his service and selfless sacrfice. I also want to thank you for allowing him to serve his country. You, too, are brave and selfless.

I cannot begin to understand the pain you feel, but I will continu to pray for you during this time and I hope that you will come to know and experience the deep love, compassion and faithfulness of God.

My son is deployed in Afghanistan and I was a single mother for over 18 years, so I know the faithfulness and provision of God. I pray that you will draw near to Him and let Him surround you and comfort you. Below is a poem I wrote. I hope it helps.

My Friend

Let me tell you about a friend of mine
who is always by my side
He's someone I can turn to
morning, noon and night

He calms my restless spirit
He hears my every word
there's no one else like Him
any where in the world

When I'm lost he guides me
and helps me to come home
no matter where I wander
no matter where I roam

Before He came in to my life
my days were dark like the nights
but now that He is by my side
my days and nights are filled with light

My friend has so much love for me
He gave His life willingly
He died that day upon the cross
to save my soul from being lost

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Dick will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I'm home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I'm only a civilian
And I don't even know if it's allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn't make it home.
I know you're in God's presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

I Salute You.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SSG Dick A. Lee our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Dick. And to Dick it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the supreme sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Dick, you gave the last full measure of devotion for what you believed in and fought for. You are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Dick's family and loved ones.
