I, like many,
remember Dixie Carter as Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women. From the first I was captivated by her style and class. I liked to believe that I was like Julia, and also aspired to be like her. After reading Ms Carter's "Trying to Get to Heaven" I was surprised to find that I wanted to be more like Dixie. I hope always to aspire to her style, her class, and her humanity. She will be missed, but always with us. DM

To Dixie’s Family,
Thank you very much for sharing your loved one with all of us her Fan’s. She was a truly gracious and talented woman that brought class and dignity to all of her acting roles. When a person has charisma and personality like she exuded its very difficult not to fall a little in love with them, remember always Dixie was loved.
I find much comfort and solace from the Bibles promise at John 5:28,29 and I hope it brings comfort to you also; Do not marvel at this because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.
She will be missed…
April 23, 2010
No one had to ask "Dixie Who." We all knew. What a wonderful lady she was. I loved her as "Julia" and "Christy's Mom" in the Christy series. She could LIGHT up a room. She was a REAL lady, elegant and so SWEET and her voice was the "Singing of the Angels" as I'm sure GOD has her in HIS Heavenly Chorus. My BEST to Mr. Hal Holbrook who loved her very much and will miss her so much. We pray he will stay strong for Dixie's sake. There will not be another "DIXIE CARTER." She IS missed!

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

April 20, 2010
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My prayers goes out to the loss of a wife, and mother. She was a true Tennessee Southern Belle. I know I too live in Tennessee and I know what the south is like. She was so good on Designing Women. Dixie and her "Designing Women" were such a comfort to me when my husband and I were stationed in Philadelphia in the 80s! I missed my Southern girlfriends and they helped me "get through"! I am a Florida native from 1941, close to Dixie's age! She was a great "lady".
April 16, 2010
What an absolutely gracious Southern Belle. My teenaged daughter and I were fortunate to meet Ms. Carter several years ago at a book signing in Memphis. As a mom I will never forget how she looked at my daughter and just "sighed" as she told her how lovely she was. I pray that a multitude of loving memories and stories of her kind words and deeds will smooth the path for Mr. Holbrook and the family through this time of grief. How the angels are singing now.
April 16, 2010
My sympathy to her children and husband...She was fun to watch and a beautiful human being..God bless you all! Toni in Arizona

April 16, 2010
My prayers and condolences go out to Mr. Halbrook and all of Dixie's family and to her "Designing Women" Family as well. Since Dixie was from Memphis she seemed like a 'home town' girl! I was reared up in Middle TN about half way between Nashville & Memphis and am a few years her senior and I LOVED Dixie Carter from the first time I ever saw her in a TV movie, can't even remember what that was, but watched DW religiously and always loved it when her spouse came on the show to play along with her. They were such a wonderful couple together.
I am truly sad at the loss of another 'Bright Star' from our presence.

Her southern upbringing is what drew me too her..my Mother was from the south and southern woman always keep their values and morals intact. Just to hear her speak was inspirational to me...Ms. Carter, if I had a choice to meet someone, you and Ms. Delta Burke, would be the first on my list. May you rest in peace and may the Lord watch over your family and comfort them and let them know how many of us care so much. For me, I endured my life more succinctly by watching and learning from her character as Julia Sugarbaker. To this day, my children will hear me laugh continually and they know what I am doing - watching Miss Julia do her thing. To put it quite simply, she was an awesome Lady. Bless you all!

The first musical I ever went to was Brigadoon starring Dixie Carter-1962 I think. I was 10 and I was hooked! She was gracious enough to accept an invitation to dinner by my parents and I still remember how wonderful it was to actually hang out with her. Her death feels more personal to me somehow because of these special memories I hold dear even after so many years. My sympathies to the family
April 15, 2010
I am so heartbroken over the loss of dear, sweet Dixie. She was a one-of-a -kind person, in every way. I first saw her in "Carousel", at Front St. Theatre in Memphis, in the basement of the old "King Cotton Hotel" when she was just 20 years old, and beginning her career!! I actually got to know her a couple of years later, when she had the lead role in "Brigadoon, alongside Geaorge Hearn, and I danced in the chorus. We went on to be in 5 shows together, and she came to my parent's house, after the shows last performances, for the "Cast" parties. She would stand at the piano and sing her heart out! Such a magnificent voice has been forever quieted.I can't believe it. I feel so blessed to have known her. I will miss her so much.My deepest sympathies to Dixie's family and loved ones.
Lynette Gilman Maginnis (Baton Rouge, La.), formerly of
Memphis, Tn.

Dixie is now in Heaven with her beloved mother and father. Maybe she's even said hello to Bernice by now. If I make it to Heaven I would like to thank her and tell her how much of an impact she has on me. Heaven must truly be paradise, if it is only inhabited by kind people like Dixie Carter, just imagine, there will be no mean-spirited hateful people that we have to deal with everyday on earth.
April 15, 2010

"I'm saying this is the South. And we're proud of our crazy people. We don't hide them up in the attic. We bring 'em right down to the living room and show 'em off. See, Phyllis, no one in the South ever asks if you have crazy people in your family. They just ask what side they're on"

A Classic Lady that will be missed by all who knew her, watched her on TV as I did, and especially by her loving family. Cherish all your wonderful memories of Julia. With my deepest sympathy.
April 14, 2010
My Deepest Sympathy to the family.

Mr. Holbrook, I was in the bowling scene (extra) with you in the movie, Floretine that was filmed in Allentown PA, Bath and Easton. I was so shocked to her of the passing of Dixie.
Designing women was my favorite show of all time. I've watched rerun after rerun as well. I've always found Dixie as a incrediable woman, no matter what movie she was in, she was always a great actress, it was like she didn't need a script, she was a natural....!!

She will be missed, but not forgotten.
When ever I hear the song, How Great Thou Are, I will always think of her. What a beautiful voice she had, the voice of an Angel.

God Bless and keep you all strong in this time of need.

Frango D. Smith , Allentown PA

What a wonderful actress! I loved her in designing women. The world has lost a great actress. But if though we are mourning her now, the day will soon come when we will see her again in a new earth, a earth without sickness, pain and death. April 13, 2010
Mr. Holbrook,
Some of my favorite episodes of Designing Women was of you and your wife acting together. You could see the love that the 2 of you had for each other. In this show, she fought for equality, for what was right, for the "little" people. She most definitely stood tall for women. Ms. Carter could bring the strongest, most powerful man to his knees-- with words. She did it with dignity, grace and intelligence as only Julia could. What a southern lady!
Thank you and your daughters for sharing her with her fans.
May her soul rest in peace.

Your loss is also the world's loss. My best memory of Dixie Carter is from her book. She had been persuaded to go sailing the high seas with her husband, Hal, and his friend and wasn't enjoying or appreciating the trip until she stood watch overnight and at dawn saw the breathtaking sunrise on the open sea. I read it the passage several times. God gave her that moment. She was a great lady. Sadly missed.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

April 12, 2010
The entertainment world has lost a wonderful entertainer.

To Hal Holbrook (who I saw in person in the 1950's in Saudi Arabia with his one-man show) and to the rest of the family: I would like to offer this poem that helped me considerably when I lost my husband......

For Those I Love
For Those Who Love Me

When I am gone release me, let me go
I have so many things to see and do
You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears
Be happy that we had a few years.

I gave you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown,
But now it's time I travelled on alone.

So grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust
It's only for awhile that we must part
So bless the memories that lie within your heart.

I won't be far away, for life goes on
So if you need me, call and I will come
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near.

And if you listen with your heart you'll hear
All my love around you soft and clear
And then when you must come this way alone
I'll greet you with a smile and say
"Welcome Home"

To The Dixie Carter's Family:

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Dixie Carter passing. May the God of Comfort, comfort you in this time of great sorrow.

Death is so hard to accept, especially when it's one of your own.

I have found comfort from God, in His Word the Bible.

As time moves on, Life is very short, some ask, Is this all that life is meant to be? No, this is not what God had planned. He has set in motion, a Government that will soon end all death, pain and sorrow. (Daniel 2:44; Revelation 21: 3,4) This was not his original purpose, for mankind to live a few years then die. He set forth the prospect of Eternal Life in the near future. His promises makes it clear, that the Earth was made for mankind to live on forever.

On the basis that Jesus Christ came to give his life for a ransom, Everyone Exercising Faith, will have the prospect of living forever on a paradise earth. John 3:16

Some may ask how will this be realized? At Acts 24:15 it states: "I have hope toward God, that there is going to be a resurrection. Jesus also said that He was the Resurrection and the Life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life agian; and everyone that is living and exericises faith in me will never die at all. We can believe this becaue he is Faithful and True. And, after Jesus had been made perfect he became responsible for everlasting life to all those obeying him. Hebrews 5:9; John 3:16

I know that these few words will not remove the pain you may feel, but I hope that it may bring some comfort to know that God does care what happens to His loved ones.
April 12, 2010

My sympathy to your family, but be comforted that there is a southern lady keeping the people in heaven laughing, singing and showing her wonderful southern class.

April 12, 2010
Ms. Julia Sugarbaker ... one of my favorite TV characters of all times! Dixie Carter effortlessly brought amazing style, strength, grace and humor to the character of Julia Sugarbaker. It's hard to imagine that she was acting, simply playing "a role" each week. She seemed so authentic ... a true Great Southern Belle, as I believed she was in real life.

I am very sorry for your loss and hope that your family finds peace and comfort at this time. May God's promises in the Bible book of Isaiah bring you hope. There, God promises that no resident will say I'm sick and God will swallow up death forever and wipe tears from all faces.

Deepest sympathy,

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
April 12, 2010
So saddened to hear of your and our beloved Dixie. She gave us all so many hours of rich and even devilish humor. I was especially saddened to read that it was endometrial cancer that had claimed her life just as it did my own dear mother. An almost silent killer with no warning until too late. The Lord be with you, her family and all who loved her.
April 12, 2010

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I grew up watching Designing Women, and Ms. Carter's role taught me it was okay to be a "ballsey" and intelligent southern woman. She seemed to be one-of-a-kind. Your loss is felt by many.

I was saddened by the news of Dixie Carter's passing. She was a southern belle who gave true meaning to the old style charm and grace. There will never be another one like her. Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;

I have admired this beautiful gentile lady from the first time I watched her on a soap opera when I was a little girl. Everything role she played even, when she was Orson's dranged mother, she brought this certani "grace" that you just had to love.I mourned with her when she lost her dear Reese on designing women. A true lady, who will greatly be missed by her fans. My prayers go out to the family and fans who have suffered a great loss. May Jehovah give you comfort knowing that a resurrection awaits dear Dixie. John 5:28,29

Yet,she did so with kindness but she was also firm. I hope the following will bring some comfort to you and your family and friends.

John 5:28&29 and Revelation 21:3&4
April 11, 2010
Dixie, you will most definitely be missed. I know you had other projects besides Designing Women, but that was one of my favorite shows. You were a very beautiful and talented actress. I am so sorry for your families loss. May you rest in perfect Peace.
April 11, 2010

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I had the pleasure of being this lady's "stage manager" on one TV show and saw first hand how very genuine she was, how little "star" and how much "lady" Dixie Carter embodied. One of those performers that leaves a very real, warm, mark on your life. If you are one of the "little people" you soon find out who's who. She was one of the good guys. God Bless Her.
April 11, 2010
I was so sad to read the news of Miss Dixie's passing. She was an inspiration to me during "Designing Women" I was a professional, single mom in my very early 30's and even though it was only a Friday night sitcom, there was a real trueness to the whole story line. I have respected her over the years, and even though I am only one fan speaking from the heart; please know that Miss Dixie was huge to all of us "Designing Women" and my sincerest condolances to you Mr. Holbrook; who was obviously the true love of her life.

I am sorry to hear that dixie carter has passed away. I loved her on all her shows. She was a wonderful person and a great actress and will be missed.
April 11, 2010
May the Carter family be blessed and feel the love of the world and most of all the peace that only God can give in this time. Dixie Carter was an inspiration and beloved idol to many within our community and we will always remember with great fondness the messages of hope, love, and spirit of "doing the right thing" that she portrayed to the world not only by her role in Designing Women, but in her real-world life as well.

It was in part, due to her speaking out, that many within the gay community have found a more open and accepting attitude from family, friends, and thier local community. She has been very supportive to speaking out about the oppression our community has faced, begining with her well known monologues on Designing Women concerning AIDS over two decades ago and she has continued that support for acceptance and love throughout her life.

She represented the ideal of a good republican, by being a fiscal conservative, yet remaining a social liberal. She also was not afraid to speak of the necessity of faith and found a wonderful balance in her life between family, friends, and fans.

The world has lost an amazing soul, who will live long within our memory, however heaven has gained an angel who lived among us for 70 years.

All our love and sincerist sympathy,

Rev. Dr. Rick and Scott Ward-Harder

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Your Light has been extinguished but your wit and sparkling smile will carry on. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
April 11, 2010
Ms. Carter's portrayal of a strong, intelligent Southern woman made all Southern women proud. I will always cherish the episode where she struggled with her ability to sing "How Great Thou Art" in public. Ms. Smart's character enouraged her saying "do it for all us girls". I have always felt Ms. Carter spoke for all us girls. I think of her everytime I hear that beautiful hymn.

My heart goes out to all of her family & dear friends. I always wished I could have met "Julia" and been friends with her.

May your many, many wonderful memories of her give you strength during this time of sorrow.

Oh, how I loved Ms. Dixie as Julia Sugarbaker, "The Terminator"--how she could minimize the worst bully w/ one or two carefully chosen words. I always felt that role was written just for Dixie Carter, the quintessential Southern lady. Part syrupy sweetness and part steel magnolia. Mr. Holbrook and the rest of your family--she will not be forgotten, I assure you. God bless.
