I grew up in Memphis and have fond memories of Duck coming to our lake place at Sardis to fish with my dad.
Duck was about 16 years older than me. I knew he was a legend in memphis... But I had no idea at the time that he would become a legend known the world over.
Duck's dad (Jim) spent many weekends with us fishing and hanging out. You never knew what other famous musicians Might Show up with Duck to go fishing.
Duck bought his sister Pat a white two door cougar (circa 1969? Maybe) as a gift. Duck's dad picked it up and we both drove it to the lake for a "test drive." Duck was a Generous guy who loved his family.
When I turned 15, Ducks dad drove me to Oxford Ms so I could take my drivers test because my dad was too sick to do it. Jim Dunn was like a second father to me.
RIP... I Hope you've both with my dad and you guys have all found all the best places to fish.
As the song goes, If there's a rock and roll Heaven, then you know they've got a hell of a band. Now they gain one hell of a bass.
Being from Memphis, and growing up in the same era, I had the pleasure to hear BT and the MGs play, and also Duck with Steve as the Mar Keys....He turned out to be a great bassist and I have followed somewhat over the years. Very sorry to hear of his passing and my prayers go to his family and friends.
I really enjoyed his music. It seems that as time goes by, God picks the flowers from His garden. He picked one of the best!
As I watch the Stax 50th Anniversary and seeing you play along with the MG's that red Fender Jazz bass I am reminded that you are gone. That sweet, unique bottom that you produced for years is silenced forever but, your legacy lives
on. From a musician that can appreciate
what you did for the art. LJ
In 1962 or '63 (I was thirteen at the time)I was already blown away by music from people like Bessie Smith, Little Walter and so on (there's just so many to list). I had a friend who's father had a huge appreciation and a huge collection of what was referred to as race music in those days. I knew who Cropper and Dunn were at a very early age. For a white kid in the suburbs of Minneapolis that was considered very odd and by some as wrong (go figure).
Around my house it was all about Sinatra, Martino, Como, Doris Day etc. etc. Couldn't stand it.
Of course along came Stax, Motown, Atlantic and soooo many more.
All the sudden it wasn't just Muddy and so on, I had all that plus all these new artists and variations on the many genres' that came before them.
I felt lucky and ahead of my time or behind the time's depending on how one looked at it. Cropper and Dunn were huge influences on me musically and appreciation there of. I still to this day can't express how much these people influenced my life. Without this music life to me just seemed meaningless. Music was and forever will be the single most important thing in my life.
Growing up in the insanity that was my family, music I believed saved my life or at least my sanity.
You'll be missed Donald Dunn, especially by people like me that discovered you at such a young age. From my heart, thanks for all you gave. Although we never met you were a big influence on the direction my musical tastes evolved.
rest in peace "Duck" there is a rock and roll heaven and now they have a great bass player, my friend is up there with you, his name is lee rynilson he plays bass and smokes a pipe you cant miss him.
keep on rockin"
So many will miss the soulful playing of the duck, I am a bass player that have copied his dtyle for eight years and I must truly say his inspiration to many bass players encluding me is truly appreciated. He just had a natrual talent for that instrrument that sill many are trying to copy.
God bless you Duck Dunn and rest in peace.
Thank You Mr. Dunn , you will always live in our Low notes with high levels .
June @ Jeff I was shocked to hear about my buddy. I moved to The Villages Fl & tried to get in touch with ya'll. I called all the numbers I had with no luck. I think you live somewhere around Tampa and I am about an hour north of there. I wish I could of been sucessful in reaching ya'll. I see where Jeff named his son after Michael. I will keep trying to get in touch but in the meantime Cindy & I are keeping you & Jeff in our prayers.
To the family of Donald "Duck" Dunn, I wish to express my condolences to a great musician and also my musical idol. I grew up listening to Stax during the 1960s and he truly left his mark in soul music and he will be missed.
There are rock and roll legends...and there are rock and roll legends. Few artists have a resume to match Duck Dunn's. Rock and Roll Heaven now has the ultimate bass player. One hell of a band!
To June and family, I wanted to express my deepest sympathy on your loss. I know it has been a long time since I have seen you, but I always held fond memories of you, my cousin, and certainly admired Duck's tremendous talent. I was out of town when the memorial service was held, or I would have come.
My condolences to Duck Dunn's family. Duck Dunn, his fellow Stax musicians and their music have been a pleasant part of my life and the source of innumerable good memories for 50 years. Thanks for sharing your music and soul with us.
Duck will be missed and loved forever as a part of the great Memphis classic sound he helped create. Our thoughts and love to June and his family, Cropper and the M.G.'S ,friends and fans all over the world.
former & always a Memphian @ heart
I'm not sure how to say this properly - but I think "Duck" Dunn would get "it" surely - Booker T and the MG's were my "new" favorite band, and have been for the last 90 days or so - I scored about 6 records while here in Hollywood on the strength of Ackroyd's rap on the Blues Brothers' "Made In America" album - and, what can I tell you, man, it was sorta like finding The Beatles under a rock... they're so cool it's kind of hard to explain it... anyway, my condolences to friends and family, and thanks for the rest of MY lifetime - I really enjoy this man's tunes, and I'm looking forward to completing my collection of same, God willing - those mugs are big fun! Thanks, Mr. Dunn... God Be With.
I first heard his music less than 20 years ago. Booker T. & the MG's, Otis Redding, who I listened to over and over, and Muddy Waters. Duck was there, and Steve Cropper, thank you both for the music. Later our boys watched the Blues Brothers and loved the music. Now we watch again and listen to songs again. Thanks to a dj named Calvin in Charlotte who left us a few years ago, I heard Muddy Waters "Long Distance Call" years ago and I guess that was the first time I heard Duck.
Prayers for his family and all who knew him. Peace be with you.
He was not only a great and creative musician, but also a friendly and unpretentious person. He will be missed all over the world. My condolences go to his family and friends.
He was a Memphis legend and will be missed...RIP. Laurie M.
JUNE, JEFF, mere words cannot express how we feel on the passing of "DUCK". He was and still is one of the greatest men we have known. Be encouraged and stay prayerful. DUCK was the kindest soul anyone could ever want to meet. Keep his memories alive in your hearts forever. Know that we are here for you and might you need us we are just a phone call away. We love you guys and continue to pray for you...."LOVE " THE POTTS FAMILY HE WILL BE TRULY MISSED..............
Charlie, Chuck, and all the Dunn family, may the peace of God be with you. The bass was always the bossest when Duck was onstage. I treasure each and every one of the many times I heard him play.

I will miss your presence here but know you are with family, friends and that Heavenly band! I knew Duck since I was a kid. He was always kind and funny. A gentle man. Hope Cecil finds you and you can play together again. Love to June and the family. Lorraine O'Daniel Scott
June, precious memories I will always hold close to my heart. Simply The Best! I will never forget. Loving you, Linda Snow
Thanks for all the great music, Donald. You will be missed.
My. My. Nothing to say but Rest in Peace, and will pray for those who loved him. Booker T and the MG's, formed and fashioned my musical tastes and talents, from the first time I heard them on WLS Chicago, late one night on my transisitor radio, which I snuck to bed.
Thanks for the awesome music.
I am a life long fan of Booker T. & the MGs.
Their music has touched and continues to touch the world.
Duck Dunn was the epitome of professionalism, musicianship and showmanship.
He will be sorely missed
My condolences to the Dunn family on the passing of Duck Dunn.
As a kid growing up in Memphis in the 60's, I loved the AM gospel stations, even though usually heard through a single dashboard speaker. Nonetheless, there was a groove. In 71, my cousin got a Ford Gran Torino Sport and we'd ride around, now 8 Track high tech, listening to Booker, Otis, Sam & Dave, etc. There was that groove again, but this time, it was Duck Dunn at the helm! Duck indirectly taught me more how not to play the bass than anything. He was truly one of a kind and I would like to express my gratitude for the gift he has given the world. Timeless, classic music that brings people from all walks of life together as one. I pray that your family is well, and for all of those who you made music with and were like a brother to. I pray that the Lord will watch over and guide them, and bring them comfort now. Remember: Emmanuel, God Is With Us!
I loved your work and your indomitable spirit, Duck--that bass line goes on and on and on...condolences to your family and to generations of admirers worldwide.
Duck: you were a living legend. Now you are simply a legend. The music you left behind will be a legacy that will always shine and will never dim. With lots of love from a town you left a BIG impression on...
May God Strengthen the family of Donald Dunn during this most difficult time. Thank you Mr. Dunn for sharing your precious gift with the world. You are greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Linda Wilson, South Plainfield, NJ
R.I.P. Ducky. You will be greatly missed. Jam on, brother
I had the pleasure to met Mr.Dunn at BB Kings in West Palm Beach a short time ago, when he performed at the club. He had a style like no other and will be missed by everyone. My prayers and condolences go out to his family and particularly his son Jeff who is a friend and the sound man at the club.
Damn. You were great. Knew an ablum with you on it worth the price of admission. Thank you
A seminal figure, molding an entire genre of music, with incredible dignity and self-effacing taste. So many master musicians are identified by their virtuosity; Donald understood the much more difficult application of perfect simplicity.
I didn't know Duck, but I knew his music very well, and tried my best to copy his style. I can't help but think right now in the Heavenly Blues Band, he's giving Jamerson a fit for first chair. . .
You will be missed, may God bless your family.
Donald you where one of the great bass players.
You´re vibe is in my heart !
Thank you for giving me the great music. That you will not forget.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Duck and June. I worked with Duck a couple of times - what a great guy, and what a fine bassist. He leaves behind such a legacy of recorded work - classic bass lines that have inspired many and will continue to do so for many years to come. Rest in peace, Duck.
I've got "soul" from you, thank you so much.
Donald was an inspiration to me and a joy to watch and listen to perform. He will be sadly missed. R.I.P. and condolences to the family.
Thank you for great music more than 40 years. I was at first set of the last show. I still couldn't believe this.
In loving memory of a great bassman. We will love you and miss you always.

So sorry for your loss June. I really enjoyed getting to meet you and Duck, his music and memory will last lifetimes. I'm sorry i never got the opportunity to fish with him.
June & Jeff, I am so sorry for your loss. Many times here at work I've told people of being around you & Duck at the horseshows way back in the 70's. I remember bringing Sheila Jernigan over to your house to babysit one night & how one of the boys used to flirt with all of us. Good memories. I wish you well...I know this is a hard time. Take care, I think of ya'll often.
June, so sorry to hear about Duck, I was so excioted about seeing you in Memphis the end of this month. Maybe later we can all get together, Love Kitty Fredrick
Although not being regularly familiar with his looks, I do recognize him with the MG's and the Blues Brothers Band.
I felt more warmth and excitement with the Blues Brothers movie than with the Bee Gees movie that everybody were so overwhelmed with.
"Soul Limbo" and "Hang Em High" are my favorites.
rip duck dunn. i was a young soldier far away in mannheim, ger when they repeatedly played green onions in their nightclubs, later i found out booker t and the mgs was you, steve cropper and others. you and steve are the 2 most famous messick panthers of all time.

Very sorry to learn of the departure of this fine and honorable man. There was joy and delight in his music. Deepest sympathies to Duck's family and friends.
Thanks, for all the great musical memories !
He was my uncle, my brother, my father, my friend. I went with him to countless number of recordings at Stax and at 13 I was watching history being made. Otis, Issac, Sam and Dave. I was a lucky kid! June was my best friend and without her he was lost. Me too. Still am. I will never stop missing you Duck. I thought you were a forever man. The shock is too much. At least you are with Michael now.

Thank you Duck for everything you contributed to the soundtrack of our lives. A true original, an innovator, and a gentleman. The flag of popular music flies at half mast after your loss. 'If there's a rock 'n' roll heaven, well you know they've got a hell of a band'...
Duck was a hero to so many bass players worldwide. He was a true original. Gone too soon, brother. You taught us so much.

The world has lost a great musician! Play on in heaven!
This is sad and shocking news. Duck was one of the greats and I learned all the basics of playing bass from him. RIP
We were lucky enough to meet "Duck" and certainly very lucky to hear him play many times with our great friend Steve Cropper. If there's a rock n roll heaven "Duck" and Otis will be having a ball. You will be missed down here "Duck"
I am so very sorry to hear this sad news. What a great performer he was and so much fun to be around. He will be truly missed. Rest in Peace, Duck !!! Prayers to the family.
I met you after a Sound Check in front of the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville Florida when Booker T and the MG's played there in May, 2005.
You autographed my 1962 "P Bass" and played it a little bit.
"Colonel Cropper" asked you if it was "Real", and you said, "You bet it is..............:)
"Booker T" was smiling, and I was impressed by the camadrie of your band.
Thanks for the memory Duck, your music will live forever............
God decided he wanted another bass player and wanted the best,, bless all,,
This is sad news indeed. Mr. Dunn was one of my heros when I was a teenager, just learning to play the bass. It is possible that Levon Helm needed the best bass player for the new band he is forming. So, the next time you here thunder, it's just Donald "Duck" Dunn hitting the low "E".
Deepest Sympathy for his family and friends.
R.I.P. Duck, one of the finest bassists ever.
He was such a talent and great performer. He played on so many hit records, I am so thankful he was a piece of my life. R.I.P. Duck Dunn
Heartfelt condolences to family and loved ones. May the God of all comfort be with you as you cope with your loss.
A sad day, indeed. It's possible that Levon Helm needed the best bass player for the new band he's putting together.
Mr. Dunn will be missed.
The original Blues Brothers movie was my favorite, by far. I have the DVD of the movie and watch it often. My daughters, ages 40 and 35 also own one and just love the music. We lost one of our greatest musicians...Donald RIP.
Everybody knows "what the duck Dunn". as his teaching series was called. One of the most solid bassmen of all times. He and James Jamerson were my influences playing bass. What a LOSS!
I'm so sorry for the lost of Donald, he will certainly be missed. May the God of comfort, be of comfort to you during your loss. May God be a refuge and source of strength. Psalm 46:1
Wow, what a huge loss to the music world. "Duck" we truly appreciate the great work you contributed to my main man Otis Redding's anthology of music. Alot of people are'nt aware that the "Duck" played on practically every Otis Redding song. Thanks for all the great recordings,I will enjoy your wonderful talent for , many years to come and the legacy will last forever!!!! R.I.P.
So sorry to hear of the loss of Donald "Duck" Dunn. His gift in music will long be remembered. May his family be comforted in knowing the joy he brought to others.

OH MY GOD!!
I am heart-broken at the news. 'Duck' was the 'Best-of-the-BEST'! Many a time I have seen 'Duck' with Neil Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and, Young, etc.
We have lost Too many (TOO Many) great musicians in such a short span of time.
However, the Halls Of Heaven are ringing with Don's powerful bass-lines.
R.I.P., "Duck", and, THANK YOU!
To the family of Donald, May the love of family and friends sustain you during this difficult time of pain and sadness.
It truly is a sad moment in history knowing we lost such a great guy and fantastic musician. I for one, have always loved Duck's fun demeanor in all the opportunities I have had to see him . My prayers go out to your family in this time of loss and wish you nothing but the fondest of memories to help you carry on.
You will be missed. Thank you for your incredible contribution to the music of my generation.
RIP Duck! It's tragic that your passing means your new grandson won't get to know the bass player that IS the responsible influence for the direction of music from the 60's to today. I'll never hear Dock of the Bay again without thinking of you and Otis sitting on it, feet in the water, "wastin' time..." Condolences & sympathy to the family and his best friend, Steve Cropper.

We'll pray for you. Please do the same for us!
I'm terribly saddened for the loss the family is now suffering. May God show you the Joys of His Grace and Blessings, and may you find comfort in His Name.
June, I just heard of Duck's death today, May 13th. I have no idea how to reach you...but I will keep trying. I am so sorry it happened. He, truly, was an amazing man. I keep thinking of all the crazy times we had with you guys and the Snows. I will attend his services when I find out when and where. I love you and know exactly how you feel right now. Joan Hodges
Thank you for the music, with Otis, Booker T & the MGs, Blues Brothers, everything. Peace and God Bless.
Duck Dunn played bass at Stax on so many great songs: "In the Midnight Hour" & "634-5789 (Soulsville USA)" by Wilson Pickett, "Born Under a Bad Sign" by Albert King, "Knock on Wood" by Eddie Floyd, "Hold On I'm Coming", "Soul Man", "I Thank You" & "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" by Sam & Dave, "Respect", "Try a Little Tenderness", "I've Been Loving You too Long", "Fa-fa-fa...", "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay" & "I Can't Turn You Loose" by Otis Redding, "Who's Making Love" by Johnnie Taylor, "Soul Limbo" & "Time is Tight" by Booker T. & the MGs and many more. Duck Dunn on bass and Al Jackson, Jr. on drums were one of the tightest rhythm sections ever. I saw Duck Dunn perform live with Booker T. & the MGs in August 1969 at the AC Pop Festival. It was great. RIP Duck.
R.I.P. I was young when I watched them film the Blues Brothers in Waucanda.
John is gone, the Mall is Gone, and now
Don. He will be missed. God Bless.
Rest In Peace. And God Bless the family in this time of need over the passing of a fantastic bassist.
Thanks Duck for laying down a groove that gave the world so much pleasure.
You helped shape my life. I'm forever in your debt.
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
