For an angel and a star, you are now present with the Lord. You have fought the fight and you have won your race. As your family grieves, may they be continually blessed and reflect on the legacy you left for them.

My fondest memories are those when I was a little girl at the Council, 1814 Vermont Avenue, Washington, DC. Dr Height, you always took time to speak with me though my mother asked me not to bother you. Your bedroom at the Council was just steps away from mind. I felt like I was in the presence of a queen. You were my queen. Rest on my Sister in Christ.

I met Dr. Dorothy I. Height at Nordstrom in Pentagon City, when she was their in 1994 to promote a cook book to raise money for one of her many causes. I remember her in a beautiful turquoise blue suit with matching hat. She stood so tall and proud like a statue! I was so proud and honored to be in her presence! I wasn't able to sneak out of my department to purchase the cookbook and have Dr. Height autograph it, so my best friend Toni Mosley surprised me with an autographed copy as a wedding gift! It has been one of my most prized possessions! I took my two children to her viewing on Tuesday, and I couldn't have thought of a better place to take them on that evening! I will always be proud to have lived during her journey for equality for all and personal battle for woman. She is now in the company of other great crusaders who have gone before her! I will do my part to carry on her legacy as best I can! Rest in peace my lovely devoted Mother in Christ! God bless and keep your family!!!

To Dorothy's great-nephew from California,
At the Inauguration you told me of your amazing aunt and how you were going to her apt. following the ceremony. I hope that day was full of joy for your auntie and that she realized her role in moving our country forward to the day when our paths crossed in celebration. I was saddened to read of her death, and astonished to read of her amazing life of strength and leadership. You must be so very proud! As I recall your daughter was in Sacramento for a leadership conference- she only need look to her great aunt Dorothy to understand leadership! May God bless you all.
April 29, 2010
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

From the first time I saw this wonderful woman in the fabulous hat who stood with and next to Martin Luther King, Jr. in the struggle for civil rights for African-Americans, women, and all people, she inspired me to be all that I can be. Today as I viewed her service, she inspired me no less. She can rest now, having run the race that was set before her. Thank you, dear Sister-in-Christ. I will follow in your footsteps as best I can.

Dear Family,
What a beautiful blessing Dr. Height was and will remain to be. I had the pleasure and honor of presenting her with flowers at Howard University Hospital some years ago and hearing her speak at a Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. meeting. I was mesmerized by her "story". I'm truly grateful to God that I was also blessed to meet her at the very first Black Family Reunion held in Washington, DC. These are memories that I will treasure and never forget. Thank you Dr. Height for your vision, commitment, and lessons that you've taught to all no matter what race creed or color. A trailblazer indeed! Your legacy, grace, and spirit will live for ages to come. Thank you for the poise, grace, integrity and wealth of information you possessed which made me want to be the best that I can be. To God be the glory!!

A life well-lived, a woman well loved. That's the real Dorothy Height. We appreciate her for all the little things she did that the news media and others didn't know about or document. To the Family of Dr. Height: Thank you for loaning us your loved one. She did so much for so many. The first time that I attended the "Family Reunion" on the Mall, I had no idea that I would be able to meet Dr. Height in person. But, there she was...smiling, taking photos with the children, and talking to all who came near. She nodded and shook my hand, and I marveled at how she could be so calm and embrace soooo many people in such a large crowd. But she did...on that day and on so many more. Since then, I've had the privilege of meeting her many more times...and,she always remained poised, proper and serenely approachable For an unselfish life well spent... Dr. Height, you are remembered with much respect.
April 27, 2010

To the Family of Dr. Dorothy Height: May God bless you and give you all the strength you need at this difficult time. The battle is not yours alone. Keep the faith and place your troubles in the hands of the Lord. Also, may you find comfort in memories of her during this difficult time. For I to am experiencing recent loss of loved ones in 2010: my mother passed February 8, my sister, March 4, and my aunt, April 24. Keep on holding on to your faith. I can also say, I have experienced Dr. Height's generosity first-hand. I purchased the print "A Celebration of Achievement" autographed by her during the National Delta Convention in Baltimore. I left the print on the plane. I contacted the office of the NCNW and left a message of how I can secure another copy. Days later, I received an autographed copy of the print that I display proudly in my home. Thank you again, Soror Height.

It was wonderful to see the news coverage of a light in the history of negro individuals and women. She was a star for us who made other races in America take notice. I know the family grieves her death, but take courage as you will see her again. There is a promise in the Bible at John 5:28, 29 which says"Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial toombs will hear his voice and come out. . .Just as Jesus said, "Lazarus come on out"; he will say Dr. Height come on out. Then the joy will increase as Psalm 37:11 says, ". . .the meek ones themselves will possess the earth. And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." May you have peace now.

I worked with Dorothy Height when I was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. She was always intelligent, thoughtful and goal oriented. She consistently gave others credit for what clearly were her many accomplishments. To me she embodied everything Christianity was suppose to be. Tenacious and yet always ladylike, she had an open mind and, perhaps more importantly, an open heart. Heaven will be an even better place for having Miss Dorothy there. May she rest in peace. With gratitude for her life,

I can still remember when she was at Norfolk State University's graduation in 1991 and when they acknowledged her presence every member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. stood and oo-oop her which seemed to go on for an hour. I can remember reading her Bio about how it was to grow up in Rankin, PA and her father working for the steel mill and how the soot would get on the clothes her mom had washed and put on the clothesline. When I read that it reminded me of a story that was passed down from generations in my family that when my Great grandfather moved to PA to work for the steel mills there that my Great grandmother moved with him but she got tired of that soot getting on her clothes that she put out on the line so she moved back to Plymouth, NC.

Rest in Peace Ms Height, Rest in Peace!

REST IN PEACE
April 20, 2010

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;

but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;

I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,

remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

While attending Howard U, I was seated watching a Greek Step Show when a soft-spoken woman tapped me on the shoulder and asked if the seat next to me was taken. After she sat, I took a closer look at her and saw that she was my illustrious soror! Having just pledged Delta, I knew I was in the presence of an icon! Overwhelmed with excitement, I could not find words to say to her, so I just sat in my seat smiling, knowing that I was sitting next to a great woman! That was good enough for me!

“We are all equally diminished by the passing of Dr. Dorothy Height and the era of American activism that she so emphatically wrote her signature on. She was an endearing friend to many of us and a great civil rights icon on the stage of history. She became to America a national treasure of immense dignity. Her lifelong fight for civil rights and equality changed forever the vistas of hope an opportunity for both African Americans and women. No matter how long the journey, cold the chill, or fierce the enemy; she captured our will to dare to be different and our will to dare to make a difference. In many respects it was because of what Dorothy Height did for us as a part of a movement of social change and destiny that we’re able to stand today competent, confident, capable and prepared Dr. Height's influence on America and indeed the world will not be forgotten.”
