E.Lynn, it has been many years now since your passing. I was sitting here at work, thought of you, and Googled you. Your books had a profound affect on my life -- I actually became a self-published author because you existed. You inspired me to be who I am, and also encouraged my own creative writing energy. I miss you so much, and wonder just how many more amazing novels you would have written by now.

I know you are in heaven, and I just want you to know that you have not been forgotten. Thank you for you courage, and for make our lives "Visible."

Nature

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

E Lynn will be greatly missed, I loved his books, once I started reading his latest novel I couldn't put it down until it was finished. He bought awareness to us and he wrote about the kind of love that I longed for and hope to one day find. I will always keep him in my heart and I will keep the family in my prayers
July 30, 2009
I began reading, "Basketball Jones", while traveling to my 47th Class reunion in Cincinatti, Ohio. We returned to Alabama on June 21st. I put my book down to take some pictures with the group, and never saw it again. There is no doubt that I will buy another copy, because I was heartbroken and could not believe that my book was gone. Now to hear that Mr. Harris is gone, is another
heartbreaker. You couldn't read, "just one" of his books, you had to read them all. There won't be another book, but the memories will always be in our hearts. My sincerest wish is that God will grant his family, friends, and fans "Peace"in the midst of this storm.

July 29, 2009
Mrs. Harris and family you had a very talented and educated son whom will be miss by all of his fans here in Arkansas and around the world. He broke down barriers and stood up for what he believed in. He didn’t hide in darkness or worried about what others may have thought of him, and with that he earned a lot of respect.
Mr. Harris will be missed. His stories open my eyes to so many things, and I am glad that he was able to step out on faith and write about real life events that African American communities tries to hide or keep a secret. He didn't let negativity stand in his way of success. I will continue to read his books. May God Bless and Keep You and his entire family.
July 29, 2009
To The Harris Family-It is so hard to let someone go who means so much to so many people. When you are feeling a loss, let the warm memories warm your hearts. E. Lynn will truly be missed. I have been a fan for many years and will never forget the book signings I have gone to when he was in town. (Houston). He was very special to me, and he always made me feel special to. I can still see his smile when he signed my last book, he smiled and said, "It's good to see you again." Peace be with you E. Lynn.
July 29, 2009
It takes courage to speak the truth when most would rather indulge a lie and live in denial. And it takes creativity to relate the truth in such a way that even those who are afraid of it are tempted to listen. E. Lynn Harris had both courage and creativity. May his soul rest in peace.

Another Catalyst-Of-Substance and Comrade-In-Arms has been taken away from me. The realization of E. Lynn’s transition was an unwelcome & unbelievable awakening! Although, it is difficult and hard to bear, I’m still declaring God does all things well, for our coming in and going out is divinely orchestrated, this I do believe. Furthermore, I rejoice in knowing, God is incapable of making or creating mistakes; God giveth, God taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord!

Let the perpetual record show, from a distance and in another state, the invisible I have always appreciated E. Lynn’s example, talent and usage of words from the early beginning of his notable writing career as documented in the newspaper of The Atlanta Constitution, many years ago. Thank God!

E. Lynn Harris knew how to tell a story, he knew how to bear witness to truth and he knew how to testify, effectively: very much like Jesus; can anyone tell me what more could they do?

The universe and the atmosphere are going to be a better for a many innocent people because of his immeasurable contribution. I take solace in knowing his power and willingness to create, deliver, record, document, illustrate, influence and inspire fellow human beings, especially: Same Gender Loving Travelers of the darker hue. May the meaningful essence of his ability continue to fortify all mankind and not ever return void. May our collective concerns help to validate his efforts all the more in the minds and hearts of people. Oh, that his historical impact to genuinely be and make a difference, might exceed our expectations or imaginations, like nobody’s business, in the years to come!

My sincere condolences and greater love abides, with each and everyone having to make the necessary adjustments to journey onward and forward.

E.Lynn...one of God's most beautiful creations he blessed the earth with.Although my heart at this moment is feeling the most undescribable aching pain;you still make me smile. You will always have the most given "Love and Respect",one can receive from me until I leave the the planet.
Many people has to contribute in their own way of what you meant to them.Knowing that the bondship of caring, honesty, support and God's Special love he privilaged to have been shared between you and I makes my tribute so grounded with commemoration that only I peak solo on this one.You often told me in our communication that you respected me so much of being an understanding man.You said it meant the world to you when I expressed such heart deliverd comments;E.Lynn, take care of "you"and I want nothing of value, materilistic things, etc.that most of the time people want,as well to be associated with you because of your status. But for me,all I ever wanted for you was your earned happiness and for you to be well taken cared of.You always respected the advice I shared with you of many who smiles in your face and say they care"realy don't always mean that"but I advised you to wait on time and allow whomever share your journey in life that they be real and God give you those who truley mean you well and remove those from your association who did not.Rest,my brother and friend;I will see you in the "Great" morning bye and bye.Knowing that I made you smile will carry me on through the tidious journey.Tio his family and true devoted friends, fans, etc. I ask God to remember all of us as this respected soldier moves on to seek his reward far greater than what man could have ever given him here on earth.Love you man and your work and destiny will live on in many hearts through Christ......Andre

His books transcended the gay world and brought the reality of this force into our everyday lives. Lynn brought this to us and these words will live on through time. Godspeed Lynn.

As I sit here at the computer to type this condolence, I can hardly do so due to the tears filling my eyes and streaming down my face. E Lynn Harris, is the person I give credit and thanks to for rejuvenating my interest in reading, as well as enhancing my understanding of the struggles and plight of individuals who are different from mainstream. Harris has enabled me to understand the inner struggles of my sister, who is a lesbian, and take joy and pleasure in being her sister. I, believe, it is because of Harris and his writings and inspiration, my family and I have developed a truly loving and understanding relationshhip with my sister based upon her humanness and not her sexuality. Just as mine is not an issue, Harris helped me to see the sexuality of the homosexual or bisexual individual does not foster who that person is as a human being. I will truly misss Harris and that beautiful smile of his. To his family, I know your hearts are heavily laddened, but look to the hills which cometh thy help. Hold dear to your hearts the "wonderfulness" of E Lynn Harris. Harris family, Be wondefully blessed by the legacy and love in which E Lynn Harris left to you! He was definitely and inspiration to many and a joy to most.

A true love of E Lynn Harris

I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of E. Lynn Harris. He was an excellent writer. I was blessed to meet him and share the microphone with him on the Bev Johnson Radio Show in 1995 in Memphis, TN. I was an HIV/AIDS Eduation and Prevention Specialist @ the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department. The HIV/AIDS/STD Education and Prevention Unit collaborated with 2 Community Agencies to bring him and Rae Lewis Thornton together for a Forum (Brothers and Sisters Let's Talk). It was an experience I'll never forget. E. Lynn died too soon.

First off, I would like to send my deepest most heart felt condolences to the family of our dear E. Lynn Harris.

July 27, 2009
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Wow, this is really stunning news. I corresponded with E. Lynn on several occasions, and thankfully I was able to let him know how much I enjoyed his work. As a journalist, I appreciated his gift for storytelling and character development, and also his sense of humor. Unfortunately, I never got to meet him in person, but he seemed to be a very nice, caring and giving man. So cruel and unfair for him to be gone so young, so quickly. Another illustration of how unfair and fragile life can be.

Mr E Lynn Harris, thanks you for telling stories that made me look at myself in a positive way, thank you for showing the good side of the Black Gay experience, i will miss you you are with God now
July 27, 2009
When my brother died I let you know about it because he always had kind words to say about you and the time he stayed with your mother. I guess its true that 'blood' will tell because you two looked enough alike to be twins and you both looked like Uncle Lawerence. Now what will I do; you both are gone. But I will remember. I will remember that you both are with GOD and your family that went before you. Tell my Daddy, Earl, Aunt Bessie, Uncle Lawerence and the rest of our family that they are still missed and you all will forever be in our hearts.
July 27, 2009

July 27, 2009
To the family of E. Lynn Harris,

Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. His novels opened so many doors and touched my life in profound ways. He will be missed.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

The mother of a young 5 year old son, told this story:
Our elderly next door neighbor had just lost his wife.
I missed my son, and stepped out on the front porch
to look for him and I noticed he was next door sitting
on the neighbors lap.
When he returned, I ask him what he was doing over
there and he said he wanted to help the neighbor.
I ask him what he said to the neighbor.
He replied, "I didn't say anything, I just crawled up
on his lap and cried with him."
........................
All of us who have lost a woderful friend also, can only cry with each other until the hurt changes into feeling prviledge of knowing him through his books.

I am truly saddened to hear about the sudden passing of one of my favorite authors. The world have suffered a tremendous loss, his literary skills were great and I truly enjoyed every one of his books. I will cherish my collection of E. Lynn Harris books.
July 25, 2009
I am fortunate as a black gay man writer who is also 54 to have known E. Lynn Harris in my life time. I have attended book readings in both New York and Washington DC and got to speak with him and am the proud owner of all of his 11 books. 11 is a spiritual number that stands on its own and cannot be divided. Mr. Harris stood for righteousness and created a world of characters we have come to love and his stories were of depth, inspiration, truth, and honesty. He was the first to expose the Down Low phenomenon long before anyone. He dared to tell the truth and the secrets and lies were revealed in a tasteful way. 5+4 = 9 and that is the year of completion. I rejoice and celebrate that E. Lynn Harris the gay man and author lived long enough to complete his lifes journey. I challenge all gay men writers to fashion our creative work in the manner of E. Lynn Harris lets pick up the mantle and keep writing for a lifetime. Thank you my friend for leading the way. I will ever be so grateful. We are better for the legacy you left.

To the family of E.Lynn Harris, I am sadden by his death. I just read his last two books year within the past 8 months, and was waiting on his next masterpiece. He was a great man that opened a lot of people eyes and heart to accept each individual for the way they were, and not be so judgemental. Before his first book Invisible life I had limited opinion myself about people being gay, and did not want to believe they existed in this world even though I knew better. I know he will be missed by many fans of his bookclub. I have read, and have all of his books, and have truly enjoyed everyone. I kept hoping that one of his books or rather several of them would be made into movies, especially my favorite If This World was Mine, and Invisible Life, along with And This To Shall Pass you get my meaning. I was definitely waiting on part II the sequal to Baskekball Jones. E. Lynn was a great gift that your family shared with the rest of the world and, he helped society to open their heart and mind. He was good at what he did, and one of my favirite authors. May God give you strength to get through your loss at a time like this. My prayers go out to your entire family.

I remember (and paraphrase) the sentiment that was used in "Basketball Jones", Don't cry because you're gone, smile because you were here.

I smile because I look at the picture I took with you at one of the signings and remember how kind and gracious you were as you signed all of my books at the time- all 5 of them.

I'll always wonder what will become of Raymond, Basil, Nicole, Brady, Yolanda and Zora among all the other characters you brought to life.

May your family and friends be comforted by God's loving arms!

To a brilliant writer, We Will Miss You!

He was my friend and my teacher. He inspired me to be a writer and gave me hope when I was briefly homeless. When I became a bestseller by doing it on my own he wrote me and said "I always knew you could do it. Carry the torch, Larry." And then he selected my books for his Literary Cafe during the Memorial Day weekend, and I got the chance to autograph The King of Erotica bestseller for my hero and my teacher and be photographed doing it. I LOVE YOU. I lost my teacher. Who will guide me now?

We thank God for the life and legacy of E. Lynn Harris. We pray for his family, friends, and business associates. E. Lynn Harris transformed my outlook on hetero and homosexual African American males. My baby brother and I made a connection when I turned him on to Harris' books. I would always buy the hardback of E. Lynn's latest tell-all and my brother would read the new book before me. I made him promise if he lost the book, that he would replace it. My brother died in 2004. I gave the books to a entrepreneur who opened her own bookstore. E. Lynn's work touched many lives and we are thankful.

On Death
Kahlil Gibran
You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

First, I would like to thank God for sending us this wonderful man, who has made such a trmendous impact on the Black community. We were all blessed to have been able to experience his talent.

I started reading E. Lynn Harris' books in High School. I can remember discussing the books at lunch with my friends. His books taught us to think and dream big. He has been an inspiration to me, an aspiring writer, and so many more in the World. I can remember the anticipation of waiting for a new E. Lynn Harris book to be published. I read his autobiography and was taken back. He could allowed his past to bring him down, but instead he allowed his past to give him the motivation help others through his writings. I thank God for Mr. E. Lynn Harris and the great talent in which I was allowed to experience.

Always,
L. Harris

Thank You E. Lynn Harris for your insight and opening your life to the world in the form of literature. We appreciate all that you have done for the "kids". Rest In Peace and wear your Crown of Jewels for you have earned them. You will be greatly missed, the mold was broken when you were made.

What a loss....My prayers are with the family.
July 25, 2009
Death and dying is a part of life that even though we know it's coming, we are sometimes shocked when it happens; which is what I am now to hear of E. Lynn's passing. God, you have one of the best writers and storytellers coming home with you. Thank you for sharing him with me and others. E. Lynn never waivered when doing a book signing. When I went to the book signing for Just as I am, he literally wrote a paragraph when he signed my book. He used to do that, but he became so popular that he could no longer do that, but he did sign every last book that he wrote when I went to the last booksigning in Atlanta for Basketball Jones. E. Lynn, you will sorely be missed, but thank you so very much for all of the sunshine you brought into my life. May God receive your beautiful spirit, and may he bless your Family and all of your friends.
July 25, 2009
E Lynn Harris will be missed. I was able to meet him and take a photo and get my book sign by him. He was just so friendly. I love reading his books, I was given his books to read in the late 90's by a co-worker when I was out sick and have been reading them every since. RIP IN PEACE !!!! You will be miss by your family and people who loves your books.
July 24, 2009
God Bless E. Lynn Harris. He was an extraordinarily gifted writer. The literary world has lost one of its brightest stars.
July 24, 2009
Lynn always seem to sign his work with "Blessings." It was a blessing to have met him years ago at the bank. He was not only a gifted writer, but a wonderful human being. I am shocked and sad, but his wonderful spirit will inspire me to follow my dreams as you did. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Bye bye my friend. Love you, Gwen

MUCH WITH YOUR WRITTINGS-NEVER JUDGE
ANYONE- THANK YOU FOR THAT GIFT.
July 24, 2009
I saw this on the news and was completely taken aback. There are so many things I remember from our days at the UofA. Before the books and fame, there was Lynn, a young man working his way through college delivering pizza's. Driving his VW up and down Dickson Street and around campus. Lynn was always so full of life and loved to dance. I thank God for blessing him to express himself and for his divine healing. No more heartache, no more pain, nothing but sweet rest. May God keep the Harris family in His loving care.
July 24, 2009
I am at a loss for words. God called home another talented brother today. His writings were extraodinary from An Invisible Life to Basketball Jones, E. Lynn knew how to keep our attention. The last time he came to Border's @ Stone Crest Mall, he was a delight. Speaking about the return of Yancy and Ava. I hope he left us something on the typewriter to be published. To his family, earth has now sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

I met him through a friend and quickly learned there was no celebrity in him, just a gentle spirit and a wonderful soul. He will be missed.
I will cherish the signed book, he gave me, the photos and the smile that still is radiant on this page.

To all of E.Lynn Harris' family, friends and fans....

May the Holy Spirit comfort you during this time of sorrow and may His steadfast promises of eternal life give you peace.

I am absolutely devastated! I have followed Mr. Harris for years and have read each and every book ever published. I have admired Mr. Harris for his courage, compassion, understanding and the forthright manner in which he lived his life. July 24, 2009

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the family and friends of E. Lynn Harris,
God doesnt make us comfortable to be comfortable but to comfort others. E has comforted us with his words by allowing those of us to escape to a different time and place. his books brought about knowledge and tolerance for those who are just like us but also different. His writing let us know that a man is a man is a man regardless of who or what he loved because like music books have a universal appeal and E's books were universal because everyone read them because they were excellent works.
So i write this note to you to let you know that in your time of mourning may you find comfort in knowing that your loved one provided comfort and i hope that this message brings you some comfort as well.

I love you E Lynn. You are a part of my heart forever. The most kind, gentle, caring, loving man I have ever met. The epitomy of what a true gentleman is and should be. Might we all have prospered from having you in our presence. Say hello to Kyle and sleep well my sweet prince.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

Oh I am so sad. In this world of stereotypical people, I found comfort when reading your books and often put myself in the characters' shoes. God is taking us away one by one, so death will surely come to us all. My prayers are with the Harris' family in this time of mourning.
