It is beyond amazement that death can not end a relationship. Here in 2014, you are still in our hearts, mines and souls. May God continue to Bless YOU.

Several days ago the news revealed that M. Barry had died and it brought beautiful thoughts of a beautiful and stately woman, you to my mind yet so surprisingly you had died prior to M. Barry in 2007. Very sad that i missed you in your flight to heaven despite thinking and remembering such a strong woman sharing your purpose that would enable other displaced women needing new wings to begin life husband less and rearing children in a single family home. Thank you for giving tirelessly of yourself.

YOU ARE TRULY MISSED BUT YOUR GIFT FOR LIFE IS HERE ENABLING MORE AND MORE SINGLE WOMEN TO BE THE BEST THEY CAN BE AS PARENTS.

RIP.

It has been almost four years since the death of the former Mrs. Effi Barry, and I can't stop thinking about how wonderful of a person she was. I pray for her even now that she is resting in peace after all she endured as the former first lady of Washington, DC.

Sorry to find out that you already gone as I tried to learn about you as biographical right after watch the Marion Barry documentary. My heart goes out to her family. Effi, you're true class act in whole time.
August 14, 2009
I often think of you Effi...you were truly the Queen of all Queens. I recently watched the Marion Barry documentary and just wanted to say I have great admiration for you..always. You were so elegant. I went through alot in my marriage but I was not in the public eye. God Bless you. You are the true HERO in that documentary. Such CLASS...SUCH CLASS.
August 13, 2009
As I sit here watching "The nine lives of Marion Barry", I am looking at his wife and I feel so drawn to her...as if I know her. I was so compelled by the familiarity of her face that I began to google her only to realize that I too had her as a professor at Hampton University! What a great teacher she was...and very down to earth. I guess that is where the detachment came from. This beautifully statuesque, yet "door next door" professor couldnt be the same as this high profile woman that I was seeing on tv. I want to say may GOD bless you and keep you in Heaven! Your LEGACY will always remain instilled in each and every one of your "Marching Pirates"!!! HPER Major 1995-1999
August 13, 2009
When Ms. Barry passed away I was sad to hear the news because she still had many years left before her. I had the privilege of having her as an instructor at Hampton University in 2003/2004. She was such a unique teacher and made the class feel comfortable to have "real life discussions". She was such a classy woman with a warm spirit. After recently watching the documentary about Marion Barry, have I realized all that she had went through but she always seemed to hold her head up high and maintain her dignity throughout her marriage. Ms. Barry you are a true class act and enjoyed being your student. May God continue to bless you and your family.
February 20, 2009
You and your family will be in my prayers daily, always remember God is in control. He brought you to it and He will see you through it. He carries us we cannot carry ourselves. God Bless you all
February 07, 2008
My deepest sympathies to the Barry family. I had the pleasure of being in Mrs. Barry's health class as a Freshman At Hampton University. She was a sweet and elegant woman who will be sorely missed!
December 22, 2007
I had the good fortune to have Ms.Barry as an instructor at Hampton University in 1996.
She was honest, courageous, giving and loving to a bunch of kids who didn't know much about the dangerous that could be present in an unsanitary world. In that summer, there was so much more going on than just health class. I am so thankful for Ms. Barry as an instructor and as a woman of fantastic courage. May we be reflections of her.

I attended Hampton University in 1963 with Effi Slaughter. We met on the first day of college as freshman and lived in Kennedy Hall. We were dear friends and spent a great deal of time together(after classes of course) with four (4) other dear freshman students.

To Christopher, I want you to know that I knew your mother when she was much younger than you are now. She was a beautiful, gentle, shy, caring, loving and articulate young woman. She was a great admirer of beauty and a wonderful lady. I will remember her kindness and caring the rest of my life.
November 08, 2007
Proud woman who believed in standing by her man. Effie, a friend and woman of integrity

To Ms. Effi Barry's Family:

Everyone will remember her kindness and that beautiful smile; Ms. Barry will always be a part of you, because she remains in your hearts.

Hold your heads up high because you now have another guardian angel watching over your family. It is difficult now; but seek comfort in knowing that she is in a better place than any of us right now. Give thanks to God for the opportunity that was given for everyone that came in contact with her to know the importance of giving respect and honor to a beautiful black queen that stayed strong regardless of the obstacles thrown her way. No longer is there a need for sorrow, because she is rejoicing in Heaven.

September 19, 2007
It was my pleasure and good fortune to have known such a sweet lady as Effi. I enjoyed hearing the stories of her friendship with my sister Nancie Purdie and all of their escades while they were in college. Effi exemplified the word "Lady". She was so special. I shall never forget the time and energy she showed my daughter when she was trying to decide on a college selection. Effi talked candidly with her when we visited Hampton Univ. and it helped my daughter tremendously. Our prayers go to her mom and Christopher. You had a wonderful daughter and mother. May God continue to bless both of your lives.

May The CREATOR be pleased with Ms. Effie Barry.

As a Washingtonian, who came into adulthood in Dec 1978, I remember this wonderful Queen.

As her son said yesterday, many compared her to Mrs. Jackie Kennedy in reference to her poise and grace.

It was not a fair analogy, for Ms. Effie Barry was regal, a Queen, and the original First Lady of Washington, DC who won the hearts of the people of Washington DC.

Rest Well Queen, and know that you are loved.
September 15, 2007
As a former DC resident, I have always had respect for Effi Barry. Christopher you should know how beautiful your Mom was and loved so much by all residents of the District. I have nothing but mad love and respect for your Mom. Effi is and always will be the only First Lady of DC as far as I'm concerned. My prayers are with you, your Dad and the rest of the Barry-Slaughter families.
September 15, 2007
To Effie Barry's Family: May you be comforted by the way she lived her life in service to others. She was always available for noble causes in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio and now she has answered the highest calling! May she rest in peace.
September 15, 2007
The empitome of LOVE, beauty, grace, and meekness was Effi. May the Lord give much love and peace in abundance to the family.
I noticed her on many occasions, while living in the same neighborhood, even in her quiet stance, she would gleam...thank you Mrs Effi S. Barry.

To The Family of Effi Barry - Our heartfelt prayers are with you now and forever.

We first met Effi while our childred attended Tots Development School. Travelle, our daughter and Christopher were in the same class. We remember so well the special "Tots" programs and children birthday parties hosted by the parents. As parents we shared so many happy times watching our "tots" grow up as smart and confident future leaders. We lost contact after the kids finished Tots, but just last year I had an opportunity to get reacquainted while riding the Metro to work. We did some catching up on the many years and looked for each other every morning so we could sit together and talk. Effi shared her health challenges but most of all she shared her faith in God. I feel so very blessed to have been able to renew our acquaintance. From the Tots Days to just last year, Effi has and will always be a special blessing to everyone she embraced.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I met Mrs. Barry as an 8th grader at Winston JHS in DC. She was there to speak to the class during our graduation. I recall telling her what an honor it was to meet her and she replied "No, I am honored to meet you young lady." She was elegant and graceful but, she had her hands full with Christopher (a toddler).(haha) He was all over the place but, she remained composed until he quieted down. I was in awe of her! Years later I recall watching her on the news and seeing the same regal elegance no matter what was going on around her. She was a queen, a strong sista' and a wonderful human being. I know that she will be missed in your lives. God bless your family in your time of grief.

I met Mrs. Barry one year ago today. I am a Poll Worker and when Mrs. Barry came through the door, I said to my self, boy she looks just like Effi Barry. She was emmaculately dressed; simple but fashionable, poise and graceful. After she casted her vote and came to the ballot box where I was working, she gave me such a wonderful compliment, she congratulated me for the outstanding job I was performing and she thank me for a job well done. After her compliments, I had the opportunity to say to her in a quiet whisper, Has anyone ever told you that you look like Effi Barry? She leaned over and whispered back in my ear, I am Effi Barry....I was so shocked that I instantly became just like a little kid in a candy factory and asked her for a hug. She not only hugged me but it was the biggest and the most sincere bear hug; she gave good hugs. I saw her again when she cast her vote during the Ward 7 Special Election for the council seat left vacant by Vincent Gray. She always made you feel that you were important the the job you were doing for the city was very much appreciated. I was devasted when I heard of her illness and then her demise. I will miss that quiet demeanor, smile and her kind words. She was TRULY our one and ONLY real FIRST LADY!!!! I will continue to keep her mother and son in my prayers. Another angel has gone back to the creator and watching over DC. I loved her and admired her doing her battle with her illness. SHE HAD CLASS AND REPRESENTED THE OFFICE SHE HELD WITH DIGNITY AND POISE. Dear Effi, May the Lord grant you the peace you so deserve and may you find rest in His arms. Lovingly yours the Smith & Woods family of Ward 7.

Born and raised in Washington, DC I grew up learning about and/or knowing all of the public officials but she [Effi Barry] was different; she was our Jackie Kennedy. Through all the adversities that crossed her path before, during, and after being in the limelight of the Barry Administration she continued to be a strong woman. I never met Ms. Barry but did see her around Washington, DC w/former Major Barry. She will be so missed. Her spiritual admirations, her love of her son, love of life, love of self, but mostly love of GOD will never leave those of us who know and/or know of Ms. Effi Barry.

TO: Christopher & Marion Barry, Family Members & Friends of the Late Effie Barry

Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. I was very sadden to learn of Mrs. Barry's passing last week. Effie Barry was definitely "Three Times A Lady."

"Thanks for the times that you've given me,
The memories are all in mind.
And now that we've come
To the end of our rainbow
There's something I must say out loud!

You're once, twice
Three times a lady
And I love you."

Mrs. Barry carried herself with such grace and dignity even during the toughest times. It was such a delight to see Effie Barry during her weakest moments giving interviews and making public appearances in hoping to educate minorites, our nation, our President on the importance of stem cell research and registering to become a bone marrow donor. She continued to be a public servant up until her very last minute. I only hope to be as strong as Mrs. Barry when faced with adversity. It has been a pleasure reading such kind comments about our Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. What I admired most about Mrs. Barry is that she never spoke an unkind word about the people who hurt her the most. She forgave those who wronged her and never looked back. Effie's faith in God made her that much more special. She had a very loving and kind spirit that made me hang on to every word that she spoke. Her voice was very soft but she spoke volume.

Thanks for the memories and I hope that the sun continues to shine warmly upon your dear son, Christopher Barry. Christopher please realize how your mother touched the lives of so many people not only here in the District of Columbia, Hampton, VA, Annapolis, MD but all throughout the country. Continue to do well even when times are bad. We love you too!

Mrs. Barry a beautiful flower that was picked way too soon. I'm very sorry for your family that they no longer have your beautiful presence.

Thanks to Mayor Fenty and the City Council for bestowing this honor upon such a refined and graceful lady. You deserve to be sent home like royalty. Mr. Marion Barry, thanks to you for bringing Effie Slaughter into our lives.

Good night my friend, good night.

You were and are an inspiration!

With Tender Regrets & Loving Sympathies,
September 12, 2007

I mourn the loss of Mrs. Barry. I shall sorely miss your poise and dignity as you graced Saint Timothy's Episcopal Church on Sunday mornings. I look forward to seeing you again in that great and glorious morning.
September 12, 2007

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. Effie's life was not her own. God allowed her to do "his work" and she has moved from labor to reward. He who promised is faithful for God's word says,..."I know the plans that I have for you."
Just like ole Job... she stood on God's promise... and let God be God.
We all will see her again if we faint not.
