Ferlin Husky worked at the Forest Park Highlands after he came out of the Merchant Marines, at the Skeet Balls, I believe, near the photo studio where I worked at the Highlands in about 1945. He walked me home one night and asked me if I wanted to go out with him and his guitar and sit in at some bar or saloon and play and sing. I was too young for that. He went by the name of George at the Highlands. Years later I met his cousin, Homer Husky, when he was my manager at Walgreen and he confirmed Ferlin went by the name of George at that time.

MARVIS & FAMILY! FOR SOME REASON CHRISTMAS BRINGS MEMORIES OF FERLIN. I HAVE MANY FOND MEMORIES OF TALKING WITH HIM BETWEEN SHOWS AT THE "FLAME CAFE" IN MINNEAPOLIS. HE WAS SUCH A WONDERFUL PERSON. HE ENCOURAGED ME TO KEEP UP WITH MY SINGING, AND ALTHOUGH I NEVER BECAME A "STAR", LIKE HE THOUGHT I WOULD, I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED PERFORMING. AND I ALWAYS INCLUDE AT LEAST ONE OF "HIS" SONGS WHEN I SING. WHEN I WAS A DJ , HIS WERE THE ONES I PLAYED THE MOST AND HAD THE MOST REQUESTS FOR. THE SUMMER OF 2010 WHILE VISITING WITH ORLO AND BETTY I HAD A GOOD TIME TALKING ABOUT ALL THE THINGS FERLIN SAID AND DID. IT WAS THEN I FOUND OUT YOU WERE MARRIEDTO FERLIN............I JOKINGLY TOLD THEM I WANTED THEM TO ADOPT ME, SO I COULD HAVE FERLIN AS AN UNCLE!!!!!! MAY YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS, AND MAY YOUR MEMORIES HELP YOU THROUGH THE SEASON. A DEVOTED FAN SINCE THE EARLY 50's E SAUER BRAINERD,MN56401

Ferlin was my all-time favorite singer. Whenever a business trip took me to Las Vegas I first checked to stage shows downtown for performers. What a glorious voice this man had. I am sure he will be in Gods Choir. Love and prayers to his family and friends. Rest in peace Ferlin sleep with the Angels.
April 29, 2011
Its late April and I just heard of Ferlin's passing on 19th March from an old army buddy from 1960. I picked up on Ferlin in 1959 through 'Country Music Holiday' which supported Elvis' 'King Creole' here in the UK. It was my first introduction to C and W and his rendition of 'My Home Town', with his pronunciation of 'Teown' rather stayed with me!

In spite of my successful efforts in the barrack room, I never managed to get him across to the whole of the UK - their loss! And his record company never did promote him that well over here. I always meant to send him a fan letter but never did, except when I tried to write to him via his website, but it crashed.

I suppose I'll get the chance to say 'Hi' when I get over there.

Part of me died yesterday! Ferlin Husky and his music was part of my psyche. His songs were with me from the mid 50s till today. If my first child would have been a boy, I would have named him “Richard Ferlin”. “Wings Of A Dove”was the first song that my daughters heard after they were born Ferlin was one of those artists who helped take country music out of the backwoods and into the wide wide world. He changed it from a regional curiosity to a national phenomenon. Along with the late Faron Young he was one of my all time favorite artists. In a man’s lifetime many things are taken from him that he doesn’t want to part with. Ferlin’s passing is one of those things. But his music will always remain embedded in my heart. I consider myself lucky to have met him and seen him perform in person. Thank God he made the Country Hall Of Fame before he died. Rest in peace Ferlin and ride the “Wings Of A Dove”. This is going to be a hard thing to accept.

If these words seems disjointed I am writing the way I feel-emotionally distraught.
March 23, 2011

When Ferlin Husky was known as Terry Preston in his younger days, he was appearing on a children's clown show in San Diego, Calif. I was chosen to appear on the clown show along with several other children when I was 6 years old for my birthday. Ferlin (Terry Preston) sang a song to all us kids were on the show that day celebrating their birthdays and I was the child he picked to sit on his lap while he sang the song. I will always remember that day. When he appeared several years ago at Johnnie High's Country Revue, I wanted to go and tell him in person what a thrill it was to be picked out of all the other children on the show that day, but alas something came up and I was unable to attend the show. May the Lord take him in his arms and I will look forward to someday being in heaven and hearing him sing on the Wings of a Snow White Dove with God's heavenly choir.....My deepest sympathies to his family and friends

GONE BUT NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN
March 20, 2011
Her is a Poem I wrote and last dedacated it to my father and now Ferlin Husky and old friend of my Fathers. "Oh So Beautiful Butterfly" As time now goes by. Its not time to sit and cry. For its time to go and fly. Because you have blossomed in such a way. That you have become a delight to the day. For as the days and nights come and go. You have become such a magnificent glow. To the earths ways that it flows. You see that springtime is also very near. Do not think of sheading a single tear. The days are soon to come that there be no more fear. As you become born from the time of your sleepy eye. You have blossomed out into such a beautiful butterfly. So now go thake your flight in the sky. With the ones that will not die. Oh so beautiful Butterfly. Copywrighted by me John Thomas Hodges Jr. 2008

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
March 19, 2011
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I have two Stories that fiddler friends told me about Ferlin Husky. Rocky Stone related that Ferlin had very quick reflexs and could grab a fly out of the air. He did so in a restaurant and pulled the old gag of putting it in his soup and complaining to the waiter. Dale Potter was travelling with Ferlin, and bass player Ike Inman was also in the band. While sitting at a bar someone started teasing and bullying the cross-eyed diminutive Ike Inman. Ferlin promptly jerked the bully off his barstool and asked him if he wanted to pick on someone his own size. The bully left in a hurry.

When we played the First Hank Williams Memorial Day, our band was stationed at the Montgomery City Auditorium. When the visiting stars from out of town came, some, but not all, brought their instruments and bands. Our band backed some of them, but some of them just borrowed our instruments and performed solo.

The Great Ferlin Husky borrowed my Gibson guitar and played it as he sang his heart out. The crowd went wild. He was one of the greatest of the great musicians. Such range in his voice; such a gentleman. I shall never forget him, nor stop loving his music.

God Rest His soul and his loved ones.

I pray for peace and comfort for Ferlins' family. It is a sad day for country music. Ferlin gave my dad his name, Tommy Collins, in the mid 50's during a recording session break at Capitol Records, because Leonard just didn't sound "catchy." He has always been a part of my life because of his connection to my father. I will miss him. God bless the Husky family.

Ferlin was attaining enormous success in his career, when I was born in the early 50's. But I followed a lot of his music as well a lot of his other family of country music artist, which were on their way to becoming the best in shaping not only the music industry but being the heart and soul of Country Music. Ferlin along with many other Greats being Traditionalist will always be at the forefront and will never take a back seat to anyone or anybody as long as there is this thing called COUNTRY, I am a musician more than 40 years and proud to say I am Country. However, I am involved now in Southern and Country Gospel. Ferlin will be missed GREATLY!, But just know family that he has gone now beyond his or anyone's successful measure and performing better than he ever has before and with no better audience than the Good Lord and Shepherd "Jesus Christ". So keep your heads high because he is just begining to LIVE!!! and We will not only see him again But forever be with him and enjoy endless musical rendentions forever, May God Bless each of you family of this great man and keep looking forward.

So long friend. We didn't know each other but neither did the thousands of other 70-75-80-85 year old fans but we loved you and your music.. My 52 yr old son, (then 3 yrs) played 45s on his aunt's stereo, recognizing each record by the color and the label. He loved "Wings of a Dove" and in his three year old diction, he called it "So Better". Yes, Ferlin, you gave much to many without even knowing it. Rest well, Brother, may it be with Jesus.

I feel so privileged to have met Ferlin Husky on the red carpet the day he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He signed an autograph and I got some memorable pictures of him there. He told me that he felt so blessed that the Lord allowed him to see that day. He knew he did not have much more time on earth. He had a sweet, sweet spirit about him. I am saddened by his death, but I know that he was ready to go. May God bless his family in this time of grief.

Our band, Red Thelin's Country Starlighters, backed Ferlin on two separate occasions in the early 80's. He was appearing at the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Everett, WA both times. It was a pleasure and pure fun on both occasions. Ferlin was a real pro and treated the band with respect, and even had our guitar player, Charlie Bieker, tune his guitar. Trusting soul, too. he will be in my memory for a long time. RIP, Ferlin.
