Dear Crippen family, I am a former colleague of Pete's from Devon Prep. Although I never met Fran, I do recall, quite vividly, speaking with Pete several times about his children and their accomplishments. The pride and joy in his face and voice as he spoke to me about all of his children was touching to me then, and is even more significant and meaningful now. I hope that your family can draw upon those joyful memories as you go through this most difficult and painful time. My most sincere condolences to all in your family. Kathy Shaheen

He was an angel among us -- anyone who met him knew that. He spread more goodness and light in his short life than most do in a long lifetime.

Now he's an angel above us.
October 29, 2010
Dear Pete, Pat, Maddy, Claire and Teresa,
We want to express our deepest sympathy and condolences on Fran's passing.
Many people know Fran because of his athletic accomplishments; we know Fran as a fine person. He always had a quick smile and time to stop and talk whenever we encountered him. It was truly a pleasure to know him and your family for our years together at GAAC and Germantown Academy.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you,

I am so truly saddened by the tragic and early loss of such an example of the human spirit. I never met him, but as a former U.VA. swimmer, feel as though I somehow knew him and can see the impact he had on others. We can only hope that in our daily lives we impact others half as much as he did in his short life. My thoughts are with you all.

SORRY TO HERE OF FRANS DEATH MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU FRAN WAS ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS LARRY
October 28, 2010
The passing of a loved one is an unimaginable tragedy for anyone, but when the loss is unexpected and involves a child, the pain is beyond words. For some moments in time…there are no words to express the feelings of such sadness and loss.

Our family experienced the unthinkable too… a loss of a father, a husband and a great swim coach just two years ago. May your family experience the tremendous comfort, incredible strength and the “unforeseen peace” that God, friends, and yes… even …strangers bestow upon you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
October 28, 2010
As precious as he was to you, he is more precious to God. The heavenly is rejoicing. I am rejoicing too. His face tells the whole story.

May God forever be a blessing to Fran's family. I am sure he (Fran) can't stop telling God about his family
October 28, 2010
Dearest Crippen Family,
My heart goes out to you in this time of the unthinkable. I taught Claire and Teresa at Conshohocken Catholic School. I knew Fran when he was in 8th grade. I remember him well. He was the kind of kid who stood out as being an all around great person! I can still picture him playing Jesus in the Stations of the Cross. My Deepest Sympathy to all of you!
October 28, 2010
October 28, 2010
So sad to hear of Fran's death.MAY THE LOVE OF FRIEND AND FAMILY CARRY YOU THROUGH YOUR GRIEF.
October 28, 2010
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

He was a young man that carried himself with such grace and humility that all of our athletes representing the US should follow his lead. He impacted all that he came in contact with in every place he went Iam sure. To the Crippens, we know by his character that he must be very loved indeed. I met him at Mission Viejo Nadadores while he was training for the last Olympics with Coach Rose. Everybody loved him. He has had an impact on all of us and especially the age group swimmers that he helped coach. HE is the type of hero that inspires and leads through his fantastic example. Be proud Crippen family because your son and brother touched many people throughout the country.

My heart goes out to your entire family. May knowing other care give you a measure of comfort.When death reaches into a our families and snatches away our loved one, the shock of loss can be the severest emotional blow of our lives. Grief is so difficult to endure that we suffer sleepless nights, empty days and a feeling of not knowing how to go on. GOD see our tears and pain of heart.For He is near to those that are broken at heart;
And those who are crushed in spirit he saves. He is healing the brokenhearted ones.
He is there is giving support to all who are falling, and is raising up all who are bowed down. So that the power beyond what is normal may be God’s and not that out of ourselves to help you all to go from one day to next.

To the Crippen Family, as a member of the extended "swimming" family of this area, we always followed the Crippen kids. Just last week I was reading of Fran's continued success in open water swims. My heart is breaking for you. We lost our oldest son four years ago and truly know your pain. I read somewhere that they aren't stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they're happy...a wonderful thought!
With prayers and sympathy,
The Molettiere Family

TO THE CRIPPEN FAMILY, FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES:

To loose a loved one is like loosing a piece of yourself…But the love Fran brought you did not leave…the essence of him lingers…It can’t escape your heart for it’s been there so long. Cling to the memories and let them find their way to heal your heart. The love and the laughter, the joy and the togetherness you shared will make you strong. You’ll come to realize that your time together, no matter how long or short that you were blessed to have such a precious gift in your life.

Although at this time you may feel a deep sorrow that is not easily dispelled, the God of comfort will help you through this time of sadness. He says: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not gaze about, for I am your God. I will fortify you. I will really help you. I will really keep fast hold of you with my right hand of righteousness.” - Isaiah 41:10.

Let the loving and fond memories of Fran engulf your hearts and minds and keep you moving forward.

What memories this athlete left for others to come after him. The love for his chosen game. Sad to say, but it is atletes like Crippen that put out a light for other young people that with his act of loving of his sport, that they will be more considerate, and obedient to the whole idea of being in condition. You know one thing, but your body tells you another. God Bless, especially the family, the fellow athletes, and certainly the USA's loss of an upstanding athlete that was a representation of what we stand for. May we never forget this name, and whisper in the ear of an athlete that may say, I can't, and say, look at what Crippen did, and give them inspiration to try harder, and to go the extra mile. What else can be said, what a loss, but what a gift to Heaven!

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
