March 23, 2009
LORD, please have mercy, as our hearts are heavy, yet to find comfort that to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD. May the family be strengthened as only YOU know how to strengthen them, and all at the First Baptist Church. May the LORD keep you all in HIS loving care now in JESUS' name I pray.
March 23, 2009
Our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Winters. May "the God of all comfort and the Father of tender mercies" provide solace at this difficult time. With deepest sympathy. (2 Cor 1:3,4)

I am a gospel music artist and was ministering in song in a little church approx. 6 miles from your church as the news came in minutes from this tragedy. We all just stopped and had prayer throughout the entire morning service. We immediately sent a prayer request throughout our prayer chain connections. I pray that our awesome God will strengthen you and your family as the days go by. May you find God's peace in this senseless tragedy.

My father is the Pastor of our small church and I could not imagin the pain it must have been to watch someone you love being shot down in God's house but be assured that God does not make mistakes and that his will may not be ours but we know that he is just. My prayers are with your family , from my church family to yours much love. May the Lord God guide and keep you through this storm for they come to make you stronger for the race ahead.
March 19, 2009
My deepest sympathy to this man' s family.
March 19, 2009
My heart breaks for Pastor Winter's wife, his children and everyone he loved and that loved him. Only God can make something good from something so tragic. When the time is right I would encourage Mrs Winters to read 90 Minutes in Heaven by Pastor Don Piper. Even though it was terrible the way everything took place, to know your loved one is safe in heaven with the Lord and other loved ones is a comforting feeling. Even if you have read it before it would be nice to be reminded of the what was experienced in heaven. May God heal your heart and comfort your soul.
In Christ's Love, Jan Karsten

Mrs. Winters, I watched you on the Early Show Monday morning, and you really touched my heart, with your testimony for the Lord, and your forgiving heart. Be still, my soul:
the hour is hastening on
When we shall be
forever with the Lord.
When disappointment,
grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot,
love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul:
when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed
we shall meet at last.
March 15, 2009

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I have joined the host of people in thinking of you all so very much during this difficult time at Rev. Winters' untimely, harsh death. I pray you continue to find strength and comfort in our Heavenly Father and experience the peace of the Holy Spirit.

~

"The LORD make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee....the peace of God, which passeth all understanding....Our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts....The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen."

Dear Mrs. Winters, family and friends at First Baptist Church, My prayer for all of you is that Our Heavenly Father will give you the love, courage and strength to get you through this deep valley. Fred Winters speaks to the whole wide world about Jesus Christ. When I see his video message on this website, I know the pastor’s message is going out to the entire world. How many lives that will be touched, how many souls will come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, none of us will know until we all meet in heaven. In a way, this tragedy helps us to understand the pain of Jesus’s mother Mary. Though her son’s death meant the salvation of many, it still caused deep sorrow. Although Fred Winter’s through this tragedy speaks to a listening world, those who loved him suffer deeply.

When Jesus, the Son of God, stood outside of Lazarus’s tomb, He wept. Even though Jesus knew that He was going to raise Lazarus, He wept. In John 11: 33 – 35, it says, “When Jesus therefore saw her weeping. . . He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, and said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to Him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept.”

When my son John was very young, he asked me why Jesus wept. Years later, as I was weeping about the loss of an infant son, the Holy Spirit gave me the answer to John’s question.

Those who tell us to stop crying when someone we love passes away are wrong and we know so because Jesus wept with the loved ones left behind.

I pray that all of you will be keenly aware of God's deep love for you.

Cindy, on behalf of all of Viola Winters Pritchard's family, know that you have our deepest sympathy. I am sure from what I have read and seen in the press you know that God will always be with you and yours, will never leave you. May you be comforted at this time and in the future by his loving Spirit. I am sorry, I just today learned that you are the Fred Winters family who is our cousin. My mother,Viola, and brother Dan visited with you at the reunion last summer.
March 14, 2009
I never got to know Pastor Winters very well, I did visit the church several and always enjoyed the services. He was a great man of God, I always told my friends that when he preached you knew God was speaking through him. I hated for his sermons to end at the end of the service, He was always the same and I regret I didn't know him better but he is in a better place and deserves a Crown of Glory. Peace and Love and Prayers go out to his family and everyone that loved him.

To the Winters family and family church members of First Baptist Church in Maryville, my prayers and thoughts go out to you doing this difficult time.

"True Believers, living in the center of God's will, do not need to fear death, They know God has a purpose for their living and that death, when it comes, is simply the end of their earthly mission and the beginning of a (promotion) greater life with Christ."

Sister Winters, carrying on the great commission appointed to your husband in the power and in the might of our Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you and your daughters in Jesus Name.

I cannot tell you how wonderfully invigorating the funeral service was. Technology is wonderful. I first met Fred when he was about 16 and preached at a youth revival at the Black River Baptist Church, Black, Missouri, which was the home church of Cindy's father Bill as well as mine. I am now with the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Holts Summit, Missouri. This is a church that is in constant prayer are we are praying fervently for all of you, the FBC of Maryville, and the Winters and Jackson families. May God Bless All Of You REAL GOOD, a borrowed quote from someone, but I can't remember who.

I watched the service on the internet this morning, what a beautiful service! I am holding you and your family and church family up to Jesus in prayer. May you find comfort in knowing people everywhere are praying for you, the girls and your church. Please look to the Lord for your every need, he is always there for us.The Lord had a special plan for Pastor Fred, and we know he is looking down on us, and waiting for the day we will be with him again. May God Bless you and comfort you in this difficult time.
March 13, 2009
We pray that God be with all of you during this time of sadness of losing a loved one, but also know he is whith God in Heaven.
March 13, 2009
Cindy, I've only been a member for 2 1/2 years, but I grew to love Pastor Fred and you, and after the words you spoke in this morning's service, I saw what an incredible person you truly are. I pray for you and the girls. You are so right. Pastor Fred did not die on Sunday, because he is now living the promise God gave him. I truly believe he felt he was protecting his flock Sunday morning. His legacy lives on, and it is up to all of us, his and your church family, to continue his vision. He would never want us to let the devil win.
March 13, 2009
To Cindy and family - our deepest sympathies. I wanted to sign this guest book on behalf of my mother, who was there when there were only 32 people in the church and Fred walked in. What fond memories we have. She cherished her pastor and friend. Our love and prayers for you and your daughters -
March 13, 2009
Fred was certainly a unique gift from God. How fortunate for those of us who the Lord gave the opportunity to share even a few steps on the path of his walk with here on Earth. For all the funny stories we all have to share (so many of which center around his love of coupons-go figure) Fred blessed us many times over with his example of what a Godly man is. I was always touched when he knelt to pray during Sunday services - that simple action was such a reminder of how Holy & awesome our God truly is.
Cindy, we know you have lots of help taking care of all the things that need to be done right now but know that we are holding you up in prayer all of the time and are close at hand to assist with anything.
March 13, 2009
My heart goes out to everyone that has been effected by this horrible act. May we all find peace with our feelings and thoughts. Pastor Winters baptized me as a young child and will alway hold a very special place in my heart. God bless you all.
March 13, 2009
Dear Winters Family
Words cannot express my feelings. Our hearts go out to the small girls that are left behind. We all know God is with us and he will provide.
March 13, 2009
To the winters family and the church family, may the Lord continue to strengthen and keep you during this challenging time. God is more than able to comfort you during the times when no one is around. He is a very present help and said he would never leave us nor forsake us. Be encouraged in the Lord. Keep the faith. God bless you.
March 13, 2009
To the family of Pastor Fred and the congregation of 1st Baptist, our church prays for you and know that God will bless you more than imaginable. Thank you for showing everyone how to celebrate life even through death. I have family members there and children that attend MCS. Cindy, I am a Pastors wife and I pray for strength for you and your girls. Our church is with you.
March 13, 2009
Cindy, we love you and your daughters as we have loved pastor Fred; please know this. Many prayers are being sent to heaven for your family. Knowing pastor Fred, I know that if God had asked him if he would give his life to further His gospel, pastor Fred would have said I will. Let us all praise God and thank him for having had the privilege to know this servant of His. God would not have allowed this if there was not a greater reason--one that is beyond our understanding at this time. He will see everyone through the pain.
March 13, 2009
My family and I watched the televised service on the internet this morning. Dr. Winter's family had a beautiful service. No words will ever be able to take the pain away, but trust that there are many people of all faiths that are praying for all of families and the congregation of this church. We may never understand why these circumstances happen, but always know that God is there with you during your most difficult days.

I have just finished watching the funeral online and the inspiring words given by Rev. Winters brother, father-in-law and mostly by his wife. From one baptist to another, I am so sorry for your loss and thank you for your words of courage and inspiration even within your own time of sorrow. You are truly good people and my prayers go out to you, your family, and your church family.
March 13, 2009
To the family first and the church family second -- I know there are no words that will take away the pain you are feeling now but take comfort in knowing that others are thinking of and praying for you all. Please take comfort also in knowing he was doing something I'm sure he enjoyed most of all.......working for our father in heaven.
March 13, 2009
our hearts go out to the family and friends of rev.winters. may god bless you with the strength and mercy to get through this tuff time. your all in our prayers and our hearts.
March 13, 2009
Words cannot express the pain this family and congregation are going through. However, with the out pouring of community support and the support of strangers, they will work their way through this nightmare of unexplainable circumstances. I did not personally know Rev. Winters but when someone dies you can tell what kind of person he/she was based on memories from survivors and there are plenty of good ones about him. Let's cling to our faith to understand this bad thing that happened to such a good person.
March 13, 2009
May God comfort your hearts, as only He can. May your memories comfort you. God bless you all.
March 13, 2009
May the Lord bless and keep and make His face shine upon and give peace to Pastor Fred's family and church.

We grieve, but not as the world grieves, for we have a hope that is the anchor of our souls!

You are in our prayers,
March 13, 2009
May God Bless the Winters Family.
March 13, 2009
My heartfilled sympathies are extended to Rev. Winters wife, children and other family members and friends. Even though during this time of mourning and grief we know that God is in control of every situation and every circumstance, even now. Pastor Winters was doing what he loved most, preaching the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ when he was called home. "My good and faithful servant, said the Lord; welcome to the home that I have prepared for you."
Yes, Pastor Winters will be missed and many will shed tears for him, but in time our heavenly father will restore in each of you peace.
March 13, 2009
I send out my regards to pastor Freds family and yall are in our families prayers. Also to the families of our church. This is a big loss in my families lives for he helped us a great deal in our lives even when we didn't know that we needed it. Peace be with you.
March 13, 2009
Being a young widow myself, my heart grieves for Cindy and the girls. Just keep running to Jesus and cling to Him. And at night just crawl up into your Heavenly Father's lap and ask Him to hold you all through the night. He will; He loves you all very much. And He will never leave you or forsake you. Just run to Him and cling.......Praying for you all to feel Jesus' hugs
March 12, 2009
To the entire Winters Family as well as the First Baptist Church Family. It is truly sad that we live in such a sinful world. Though I've never had the pleasure of meeting Pastor Winters. I feel as though I've known him through conversation with his church family. God sent you a servant and service he did acomplish through Jesus Christ. You should be proud of this man of God who walked the walk and talked the talk. He was a called to serve and serve the Lord he did. His life works spoke for him. Truly, I thank God for allowing me to hear about his service in this kingdom. To hear about his love, his giving, his inspiration, his willingness to make a difference in so many lives. So many lives have been changed because Pastor Winters accepted the call of God and walked in the way of the Lord. May God Bless the entire Winters Family, and the First Baptist Congregation. May God contiue to give perfect peace that surpasses all understanding. In Jesus name I pray Amen. "TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE IN THE WORKS OF PASTOR FRED WINTERS!"
March 12, 2009
I was fortune enough to know these two people who walked the walk. I'm lucky that they did what they loved to do best.
March 12, 2009
Our family sends all our thoughts and prayers to the Winters Family and our church family. We are going to miss Pastor Fred so much, words can't begin to describe. He baptized myself and two children in December 2006 and I will never forget his warmth and kindness to my family. Knowing he's in Heaven now is comforting, but my selfish side wants to walk into church, see his smiling face and shake his hand. We attended the visitation tonight and looking at all the pictures of Fred, Cindy and the girls, made me realize what a happy, happy man Fred was. Very sincere, kind and loving. Truly a Man of God. We miss you..........
March 12, 2009
May God Bless you and your girls, my prayers are with you.

I am the mother of a pastor at a church in your area. The loss of Rev. Winters has had a huge impact on all of us. My church-Ellis Mound Baptist Church, Wayne City, IL sends their deepest sympathy. We lost one of our members in a shooting and know how hard it is to heal, but through God's mercy & grace we survived and actually grew stronger. Our prayers are for your healing.
March 12, 2009
First I want to express my deepest sympathies to the Winters Family. I attended church several times with my mom Sharon Thies and I always felt welcomed with such love and grace. I don't feel like I am an overly religious person but I want to let everyone know that when I met Rev. Winters I felt like I had just met a true man of God. I hope that at some point all of this sadness will somehow make sense and the goodness of God will shine upon us. To the families of First Baptist I want them to know that I am thinking and praying for them as well.
March 12, 2009
To Pastor Fred's Family and the FBC family-please know that many prayers are being lifted on your behalf to the Lord from our congregation at St John's United Methodist Church in Edwardsville.

Looking over the 448 entries, one cannot help but notice the love for the man lost, or his family, that grieves. There are no boundries to God's love. From state to state, religion to religion, the one constant is Christ our Lord. Grieve for your loss, look to your children for the wonderful memories, and keep alive the soul you've lost, be assured one day you will meet again, and it will be joyous.

My sympathy and condolences go out to all who knew Rev. Fred Winters, especially his wife and daughters, parents, siblings, relatives, friends and congregation for the tragic loss of Mr. Winters. I can not imagin such a shocking event to happen right in front of others in a church service. But we Christians know that Mr. Winters is in the presence of our Heavenly Father/God, and is now at home in Heaven and safe, praise God that we can take comfort in that.

I never had the privilege of meeting Pastor Winters or his family personally, however, I was told he was a graduate from Raytown High School, Raytown, MO. I have had the privilege of substitute teaching for the Raytown school district. I have read many fine things about Pastor Winters, his family and congregation. Sometimes there asre simply not adequate words at a difficult time such as this. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with each of you at this difficult time.
March 11, 2009
My heart was greatly sadden by this news. I was in my own church service when I recv'd a text message about this horrid news.
To the Pastor's family - I have prayed for all of you. My heart cries for you. I take comfort in thinking that my sister who has been in heaven for the past 28 years. (she was 2 when she passed) will be showing him "the ropes" of heaven.
To his church family - I am praying for you all. I hope & pray that you will keep all of Pastor Fred's teachings to heart.

My deepest sympathy to the Winters family and the community. This is such a tragedy, but nothing surprises me anymore. I think that the old devil is roaming to and fro, as the Bible says he will do. We just must be ready to go at anytime, because who knows but God, when that time will be.

Again, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone whose life has been touched by Pastor Fred, and I know it has been MANY!!!

Goodbyes are not forever
And nor is it the end
When angels come to call away
A loved one or a friend.

The empty place that?s left behind
Within this world we know
Reminds us just how brief a stay
We have before we go.

So when it?s time to bid farewell
To one we?ll dearly miss
Let?s just say we?ll meet again
And promise them with this?

The true gift is that love remains
Although we now must part..
Until forever and beyond
We?ll keep you in my hearts.

Wishing You Comfort In Your Time Of Sorrow

March 11, 2009
May God's love, strength, and comfort surround the Winters Family and their Church Family. The comfort is in knowing that at God's appointed time, he and all others who believe and look for the blessed hope in the return of the Lord Jesus Christ will be raised up to live in new, indestructible, and incorruptable bodies that know no pain, sorrow, or suffering (Revelation 21:4). Here, we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come (Hebrews 13:14). I'm so thankful to God that this is NOT as good as it gets. Let not your hearts be troubled or afraid (John 14:27).

March 10, 2009
I met Fred when he was 16 years old. There was nothing he did half-heartedly. From track to debate, he was passionate in his endeavors.

I have so many great memories of Fred:

His church baptism at FBC Raytown, his enthusiasm and dedication in organizing a concert with his favorite Christian rock group Petra in Blue Springs. I remember loading up and driving to college for the first time. I dropped him off at SBU while I continued on to Evangel. I recall carpool trips home to KC, long phone conversations discussing the scripture, and his desire to preach. I saw him grow in his faith from a teenager into a young man eager to spread God's word.

We lost touch as our lives lead us in different directions, but I am proud to see his passion for helping others never waivered.

I will pray for his wife, girls, family, and congregation as they deal with their loss.

Freddy you will be missed!

Precious in the sight of the Lord; a voice of hope to those without hope... an encourager who spoke the Word of God boldly and without shame. An example for us to follow. Created for a time and a purpose. Loved and appreciated more than mere words can say. We may not understand, but God is still in control and will be glorified!

Cindy, Alysia and Cassidy; the extended family; First Baptist Church of Maryville and the community... May the Lord of Lords, Master, Savior, King of Kings, Sustainer and Lover of your souls be your source of hope. Cling to the Rock of your salvation; be comforted with songs and hymns...

May your faith be stronger, your words be bolder and your hearts be fixed on Jesus Christ. Rejoice! For the Lord God is Ruler, Creator, Father... I pray for abundant blessings, protection and comfort for each of you. Isaiah 43:3-4

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Pastor Fred has touched so many, many peoples lives. Adam and I went to FBCM for the first 3 1/2 years of our marriage. Pastor Fred baptised me and helped put us on the spirtual journey we are on. Cindy, I still have the poem you gave me entitled 'Miscarriage'part of it says "The universe has its reasons. I hardly know how I continue..." We will probably never be able to make sense of this tragedy. I only hope that you and the girls will cling to God knowing that Fred is in heaven preparing a place for his 'girls'. God bless you!
March 10, 2009
I am overwhelmed with sadness for Reverend Winters family and congregation. We are praying for all of you during this horrific time.
March 10, 2009
I am shocked by this tragedy and as well as many others. I really don't know what to say except my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God wrap His loving arms around you all and give you peace, comfort, and strength as you deal with this horrible tragedy. I love you all.

Words are difficult to find that will truly express what is in the heart at a time like this. Our deepest sympathy to the Winters family and the FBC Church family.

You are all in our daily thoughts and prayers. We have family that attend your church and we know the heartache and shock they are going through.

We as Christians know that our adversary will stop at nothing to destroy God's plan...but we also know that He can not succeed....God still wins! Pastor Fred knew this and had a burning love for the lost and wanted more than anything to bring people into the salvation of Jesus Christ.

I hear nothing but praise for a man who loved the lost so passionately. What a wonderful example He is to all Christians.

This is a time to keep our eyes upon Christ and rest in his arms of comfort.

God richly bless you and keep you during this difficult time.

Winters Family,

God's KIngdom promise at Psalm 37:10-11 And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be. 11 But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

I knew Fred while he was a student and after he became a pastor i was amazed at what God accomplished through him in a small town. There are no words to describe the numbness i continue to feel.
But I do know the Lord found Fred being faithful as he was unexpectedly taken away.

Dear FBC Maryville and Winters Family,

There are certainly no words to express our shock and horror at the events of this past Sunday. Thank God your husband, father, and pastor was a Christian, and that he lived his life in a way that touched so many others. May his passing reach even more people with the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ.

As a pastor not many miles away, your loss has reminded me that our lives are but a vapor. Who knows but for what some twist or turn may have occurred and the gunman might have come after me instead.

No one can replace Pastor Winters, but his mission must continue. May those who know Christ as Saviour redouble their efforts to reach those who do not with the wonderful story of God’s love. May those who have never received Christ as Saviour find Him in the message that Pastor Winters proclaimed so well through his words and his life.

Dear Cindy -

Your husband was a fine man with an open heart and an open mind that drew people to him. In a world where pastors and Christians are denigrated for "dogma" and "brainwashing," Pastor Fred's strength in his convictions never stopped him from encouraging others to seek their own faith, not just follow blindly. He encouraged us to learn and make our own choices - and that shaped a lot of lives.

I attended FBC youth group in the late 90s. And even though you probably do not remember me, I do remember you and your wonderful family. Alysia was just a toddler and I remember you holding Cassidy when she was just a little baby. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your girls in this time of your loss.
March 10, 2009
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him. Let thy mercy O Lord be upon this family, according as they hope in thee. Let Christ be your strength in this time of trouble. MAY THE HOLY SPIRIT COMFORT YOU AND SUSTAIN YOU!
March 10, 2009
Enter into your rest, thou faithful servant. May the Lord touch as many through your passing as he did through your life. Multiplied blessings upon the ladies you left behind.
March 10, 2009
Cindy and girls, When the church was only 32 people Pastor Fred baptized me and when I visted the church last year he still remembered me. He was a impressive man and will be greatly missed. My prayers go to you and your family.

"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians15: 55-57

But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven."

March 10, 2009
How sad we were to hear of this tragedy. May your fond memories bring joy to your hearts for many years to come.

As a bible student and teacher, no doubt he had a firm hope in God's Kingdom and the things it will accomplish. Regarding the righteous, Psalm 37:29 promises that they will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.

As we await the fulfillment of these promises, may you find comfort and strength in God's Word and the many promises therein.

Sincerely,
March 10, 2009

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Mrs Winters and girls, I am from collinsville Ill I went to your church when it was down from hospital then for a couple of years at new one. I am so sorry for your loss 'Pastor Winters was such a nice kind person and I always enjoyed his messages at 10:30 service. I recently moved here to Texas and was so shocked to hear this. God has gained a beloved follower and I know he will give you strength in the days to come. God be with you and family.

Lots of unanswered questions on this side of Heaven....but one day, "we will know even as we are known." Until that day, may the God of all comfort surround you in His arms through the prayers of His children and through events that let you know without a doubt that He cares and is there through it all.
March 09, 2009
All of you are loved very dearly and I am keeping you in prayer. Above all else, just remember that God is in control and He is on the throne. I know that the Lord will take your church to higher levels in His Kingdom. Psalm 46:10- "Be still and know that I am God." Pastor Winters, I will see you one day as i spend eternity in Heaven with Jesus Christ.
March 09, 2009
First Baptist Church of Maryville was my visiting church, and even though I visited but a few times, Brother Fred was a great model and an encouragement for a fellow Baptist pastor from New York. I think of you folks as my second home, and I grieve with you over the loss of Pastor Fred, but I do not grieve as one having no hope. We will see Brother Fred in heaven and we will praise our Jesus together for His steadfast love. For the precious family, our prayer is for your heart to be filled with peace as God fills the void in your hearts with His love. He will see you through this trial and lift you up in praise. May God bless you all.
March 09, 2009
To the Winters and FBC family. There are no words to express our heartfelt grief for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are having to walk such a painful path. Just know we are interceding on your behalf here in Georgia asking Him to give you peace that passes understanding and the strength of eagles as you shine for Him amidst this trial.
March 09, 2009
We will never forget you Fred. The love of Christ shone through your life. God bless your family.
March 09, 2009
Although we are many miles away our hearts are united in prayer for the Winters family and the church of our Lord Jesus Christ. Even though we may never know why this person would do such a thing, God knows and he doesn't make any mistakes.

Pastor Fred was a wonderful human being and a giving person. When I was 8 years old I had the pleasure along with my Best Friend Amanda Taylor of meeting Pastor Fred and his lovely beautiful Wife. I was then baptized several years later but my family and I regrettably moved away when I was 13. Pastor Fred and the much smaller congregation at that time, had a huge impact on my life! I loved going to church and the revivals that were hosted! I unfortunately since then have not been able to find that type of warmth and love from a congregation or pastor since then...Thank you for impacting my life and many others since then...God bless and the Winters Family are in my prayers always!
March 09, 2009
To the family and congregation,
I was moved to tears as I read of your tragedy. I've never met any of you but I know what it feels like to loose a loved one to a senseless violent act as my 17 year old son fell victom 7 years ago. As a 32 year Pastor I had to accept the fact that while being close to God does not immune you from tragedy, being close to God will get you through the tragedy.
You have our sympathy and our prayers.

We will never know why this was the plan, but be comforted that he has joined God and will continue to watch over you from above. Thankfully, it was over before he knew it and there was no pain.

Although I did not know Pastor Winters my heart goes out to his family and friends in Ill. Even though we are so far away I still feel affected by this loss.

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want
He maketh me to lie down in green pasture,
He leadeth me beside still waters, he restoreth my soul.
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his namesake
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I fear no evil, for thou art with me.
Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.
Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalms 23

Dear Cindy,

The years have passed quickly since 1996. We are the Berry family and will forever be grateful to you and Fred for making us a part of your family at FBCM. Being new to the area, we began a search for a church home. From the very first time we met you two we both knew we found our pastor, friends, and church home. Fred always had a unique way of remembering our names and always greeted everyone with great brotherly love. Thanks for always being there for our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you now. Blessings always,
Jodie, Dave, Daniel,
Joe, and Stephen Berry
March 09, 2009
A piece of Fred's past that many might not remember is that he served as one of the assistant coaches for the Wheaton College Debate Team while he was a graduate student in 85-86. He was a tremendous asset to our program at that time, being an excellent thinker and helpful resource. He was widely respected in the activity during his short time with us. I pray that his family and his church will experience God's divine comfort. God bless you all.
March 09, 2009
Our prayers are with the Winters family that they will experience the fullness of the Comforter in their lives. May your church grow exceedingly as a good seed has been sown in soil through this tragedy and we pray for the harvest of your pastor's unspoken and unanswered prayers to come forth. The family of Kingdom Embassy is praying for you.

Cindy,

I am so saddened and shocked to hear of this tragedy. I feel so blessed to have known Fred for 30 years. I was always so glad that we reconnected years ago at our high school reunion. I know I don't have to tell you, but he was an amazing man...one who I truly looked up to. You and the girls are in my and Tami's prayers.

To the FBC family, stay strong because together and through Christ you will not only get through this tragedy but continue on with your Pastor's vision and commitment to the Lord.

God bless all of you.

Cindy, Alysia, and Cassidy,
I am so sorry for the loss of your husband/father. Pastor Fred meant so much to so many and will be greatly missed by all. I learned so much from him. I am a member of FBCM and when I moved here 15 years ago Pastor Fred welcomed me to FBCM that first Sunday I attended and from that day on greeted me with a "Hi how ya doin?" every single Sunday and never forgot me among the many members of FBCM. That was so amazing to me and I will never forget that special touch he had with people. May God be with you all at this time and may he help you find peace in your hearts.
March 09, 2009

March 09, 2009
The Apostle Paul's words, "To live is Christ, to die is gain" speak fathoms about Pastor Fred's life long testimony. Having sat under his leading in THE WORD when visiting our daugter (Mindy Robinson), I can speak strongly about the impact his guidance leaves here to honor Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We know that he would be the first to forgive and to love, but our prayers remain for his lovely wife and daughters, as well as for his church family. We will never forget your sacrifice.
March 09, 2009
I have never met the Pastor, and I'm sadden deeply to here of such a tragedy. May the love and kindness that he showed, that I read about continue to fill everyone's heart with great joy in remembrance of him.. For we too shall continue to grow stronger and closer to our Savior Almighty, for we shall meet, the Pastor again, or for the first time....

Our hearts were saddened to hear of the sudden, tragic loss your church family has suffered in the life of Fred Winters. When my husband Josh and I first moved to Ilinois in 1998, we were told to visit your church for a new church. We were living in Collinsville at the time. We had some rough patches in our lives then and I remember us attending counseling there too. Anyhow I remember Fred and his wife Cindy welcomed us into the church with open arms. We have since relocated to the Belleville area and are members at Christ United Methodist Church in Fairview Heights and I want you to know that your brothers and sisters in Christ are praying for Fred and his family and the church congregation as well. I am just wondering when a service will be held in his honor that the general pubic can attend also as we would like to come and pay our respects to his family. Thanks and our prayers are with you all

This is a tragedy our family is so sad to hear about. God is all knowing therefore, This is only a suprise to man. Rev. Winters appears to have lead many to the Lord and has served God's purpose. He is home where he belongs. Do not sorrow, for this is a day of happiness.

To the family of Pastor Winters and the congregartion at FBC- Maryville - Even as you grieve, Paster Winters has already looked on the face of our blessed Lord and Savior and heard the words every Christian heart longs for, "Enter in my good and faithful servant, a job well done"... May God bless Cindy and her children and may He use this tragedy to continue to bring glory to His name through the congregation of FBC, Maryville. In all things, give praise to God!

Mrs. Winters, your daughters, and the entire church family ~ Your brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the world are coming before the throne of grace in your behalf, asking God to fill you with HIS peace. We are truly weeping with you and continue to pray without ceasing. There are many of us at First Free on the other side of the river who stand ready to be of service....just let us know.

In Christ Jesus.
March 09, 2009
My prayer is that God would bring purpose to this tragedy. I know this was not God's plan---that Jesus is grieved for those who have suffered the loss of Fred Winters. God, give them peace and comfort---comfort in the knowledge that Fred is with His Lord. Also, give them faith to believe that You can redeem all things for the good of those who love You.
March 09, 2009
I'm so sorry to hear of this tradegy. My prayers are with the pastor's family and his church.

One of my favorite passages in Romans says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,who have been called according to his purpose." Even though things seem dark right now, we know that our God has a big plan in all of this. Pastor Fred was such a stronghold in our community. His contribution that he may to society will last for many lifetimes through the people that he touched. His ordinary attempts have made a difference in so many lives. May God's love and comfort pour across the Metro East area right now as we as a community grieve and remember our brother in Christ.
March 09, 2009
My sympathies and prayers for the Pastor's family and for the Church Family of First Baptist Church in Maryville. What a tragedy this is, felt by all. One day perhaps we will know the reason, but until then, know that God is with us through the journey ahead. God Bless and keep all of you.

Oh, my heart and my prayers are with this pastor's family as they go through this time of grievious loss of their loved one. I am also praying for his church family. We wonder why our good Lord allows such tragic things like this to happen, but according to His Word, there is a reason and purpose behind everything that happens to us as Christians. He could have prevented it, but apparently He has some great plan and purpose in mind, far greater than our finite minds can understand. I am praying for you as you grieve, but take comfort in the fact that you know your loved one is now with the Lord he loved. And one day, you too, who know and love the Lord, will be reunited with him. May God bless each of you and comfort you in your great loss.

We thank God continually for the wonderful instruction we had under Pastor Fred and the countless lessons in his sermons that helped mature our faith. He has equipped us all. He has taught us all to exalt. He has taught us all to evangelize. I am so sorry for the loss of your pastor and the hurt/fear that your congregation is going through. I have only attended your church one time and at that time I had the privledge of hearing your pastor speak. My 15 year old son and I were able to be squeezed in at the last minute so as to be able to see your last years Judgment House and we were blessed with being able to bring an additional 4 friends with us to experience such a GREAT SERVICE that your church offers. Your pastor was in the 2nd to last room that we attended saying the Sinners Prayer to the group. I want to thank your church for the opportunity of Judgement House and I would again like to offer my condolences. Your church and family are in my Prayers.

I had the privilege of shaking Bro. Fred's hand many times; he was the son-in-law of our former pastor, Rev. Bill Jackson. Fred & Cindy visited Lesterville First Baptist Church often--Fred prayed and preached, Cindy sang--what a blessing! Our thoughts and prayers are with the Winters and Jackson families in this unspeakable tragedy. To our brothers and sisters at Maryville Baptist Church, our hearts ache for you. We, too, feel sadness and loss.

Brother Fred preached a revival at our church several years ago (First Baptist Church of Lesterville, MO.) when his father-in-law, Rev. Bill Jackson, was our pastor. Brother Fred was a dynamic speaker who was truly "on fire" for serving our Lord. I will never forget the grin he so often displayed. I'm sure when his Master met him at the pearly gates, He said, "Well done, my good and faithful servant"! Brother Fred, we love you and your family and will continue to keep Cindy and the girls in our prayers. Your Friends in Christ, Mike, Katana, and Ryan Gregory.

I am so very sorry for your loss, but know God has a plan even in this tragedy. Pastor Winters was a martyr for the cause of Jesus Christ, and will be remembered as such. Dear Cindy -

Debbie and I cannot express our sorrow and grief at the terrible events of yesterday. Fred was a tremendous person - friendly, welcoming, a Godly husband, father, pastor and man. Even though it's been 8 years since we moved away, we still often think of FBC Maryville, and how much you and Fred have meant to us. Please know that our prayers are with you and the girls. The world is a lesser place today because Fred is gone, but . . oh, how much better the world is today because he was here.
March 09, 2009
Please accept our deepest sympathy for this tragedy. To all of Rev. Winters family and congregation, please know that you are lifted up in prayer. May God give you the strength to get through this difficult journey.

May everyone who hears of this turn to Him for comfort and assurance. May the assailant also turn to God at this time. Thank you to all FBC members and staff who bravely testified before the media cameras. Their message has been shared across the globe and God will be glorified, even in tragedy.

Death, be not proud

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

We would like to share a favorite passage of scripture from John Chapter 14:

Jesus Comforts His Disciples
1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God[a]; trust also in me. 2In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going."
Jesus the Way to the Father
5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
6Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

We will keep you in prayer.

Your grief may ebb and flow. It has been said that each of us has this well deep inside of us that can be filled to the brim with grief. Every time we cry, we empty out some of the well. But the well fills again. The level of sorrow in your well may lessen as time passes, but it will never run dry. There will always be birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and those days when the well seems to fill to its brim again. Allow yourself time to remember and mourn. It is part of your healing. Grief is a continuing journey.

May The Lord High God envelope the parishoners in His Peace,Love Comfort and Strength during this painful ordeal. Judging by the faith that was shown by the Worship leader as he shared the security of God's Word indicates Pastor Winters was a strong leader himself and a true servant of the Lord Jesus. It's my belief Pastor Winters would want us to pray for his assailant. May God Bless Maryville First Baptist.
