Having lived in this area for many years I thought of Colonel Day as one of us. I always followed with interest the many activities he was involved with as he continued to serve his community and fellow citizens. The week of his death I sat each morning with the newspaper and read about his accomplishments...the joys and sorrows that his family endured and I was moved to tears each morning as I read about this true hero of a man. I was so honored that his family allowed us to share in and be a part of this very personal time for them. The love and respect that they shared for this great man was so evident in the stories that were shared. Thank you for allowing us to see yet another side of one of the bravest men to ever serve our great country. His love of God, Country, and Family will live on in our hearts forever. May God give you comfort and His perfect peace. Thank you Day Family....for your sacrifice and service to America.

I grew up at Eglin AFB in the 70's. I was fortunate to meet Colonel Day just after he had been awarded the CMOH. I was friends with his son George, we were in the Boy Scouts together. I was just a very young 15 year old kid full of typical teenage attitude. I had gone over to George's house and was sitting in their living room when Colonel Day walked in. I remember my first thoughts were, how old and frail he looked. He spoke with me for a while. I remember standing and realizing that there was no frailty in this man. We spoke of who I was, who my parents were, the Boy Scouts, being friends with his son. George walked in the room about 10 minutes later and I said goodbye and we left. That was ~37 years or so ago. The small talk we had has always stayed with me. Our families stayed in contact both retiring from Eglin. Even so, I never spoke about that conversation or what it meant to me. It was part of why I joined the service, why I volunteered for Submarines. When times were hard or I was in some far away place from home tracking targets, surfacing at the North Pole, hugging some foreign coastline, those few minutes I had with Colonel Day were always with me. I imagine the impact 88 years of living that this man has had after just the 10 minutes of his life that I was blessed to experience. I know his Twins, George and their older brother will be okay. They are a strong family, and with their dad, a Fighter Pilot lawyer in heaven advocating for them, they are surely blessed.

Colonial Day my the Lord bless your family during this time and thank you for your service. Rest in peace.

To the Day Family:
I am so saddened to hear of Colonel Day's passing. He was a large part of my young life, as I wore a silver POW bracelet for years until he was released from captivity in 1973. I was in college at the time. I still have the bracelet, and it always brings a smile to my face when I see it. Blessings to you all and may his memory continue to live on.--Lesanne Brenneman Fliehler
P.S. My daughter asked me today if I knew why the flags were flying at half-staff in Iowa. A short web search later and I learned Gov. Branstad ordered it in Col. Day's honor.

I felt a personal touch with greatness on September 15, 1995 when I was given an autographed copy of “Return with Honor” personally signed by the Colonel, The Viking and George Jr. It should be required reading for anyone entering the military or politics. We will be forever indebted to the Colonel because of the leadership qualities he demonstrated and the inspiration he will provide to our future leaders. His example of leadership will do much to keep his beloved country strong. As another great military leader once said “…we should thank God that such men lived”. We are forever grateful for the support our nation has received from Colonel Day and his beloved family
God Bless
A fellow veteran

"High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
July 30, 2013
Dear Doris, In the late 60's, I was a teenager working at Slenderella on Cambelback Road in Phoenix when I met you. I wore your husbands POW bracelet for all those long years he was gone and watched how you survived an incredibly difficult ordeal with courage, hope, and uncommon grace. Having grown up as an Army "brat", I understood only too well the hardships most families endure but yours was extraordinary. You may not have realized it at the time but you were an inspiration to a young girl and so many others and I have never forgotten you. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss and yet I am so happy to know that you and Bud spent many long years together after the last time I saw you. Much, much love to you, lovely lady.
July 30, 2013
Doris,
I remember, in 1970, when you allowed me the honor of wearing Col. Day's bracelet and it stayed on until he came home. My wrist was proudly empty but you both have always remained in my heart. You impressed me with values I hold today and have passed onto my family.
May our Lord continue to richly watch over and bless the Day family as He greets this beloved servant, husband, father, grandfather and patriot into his kingdom!
Our world is a far better place because of the wonderfully lived life of Col. George "Bud" Day!

I met Col. Day at several River Rat reunions. He was truly an American hero in that he was a modest and quiet man who got the job done whatever it was. He led from the front and not from the rear. May his family receive the peace of God.

After reading all of the notes here about the Col. I will have to say to the family that they have truly lost a GREAT MAN, I wrote earlier about having spoken to Col. Day on the phone after I had found his POW wrist band in a Antique Shop and sent it to him. I cried then and I cry now but it's with GREAT JOY knowing that George is now looking down upon us. I will forever be grateful for having spoken to this wonderful fellow Vet. Go in peace, and may the family know how much his worth was to our country. If Mrs. Day would like to contact me I would be honored. gadams60x@yahoo.com

iN 1970'S, I WAS A MILITARY WIFE AND STATIONED IN KEY WEST. I WORE HIS POW BRACELET FOR MANY YEARS. IN 1990'S, I CALLED HIM WHILE HE WAS LIVING IN PENSACOLA AND HE WAS NICE ENOUGH TO TALK WITH ME. I TOLD HIM OF ALL THE MILITARY GROUPS IN KEY WEST THAT SUPPORTED AND PRAYED FOR ALL THAT WERE POW'S AND MIA'S. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO ATTEND HIS MEETINGS HERE IN PANAMA CITY BUT FOLLOWED HIM IN ALL HIS SUPPORT FOR THE MILITARY OVER THESE MANY YEARS.
I THANK HIM FOR HIS MANY HOURS, DAYS AND WEEKS OF SPEECHES TO ENLIGHTEN THE MANY PEOPLE THAT DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THE
PAIN FOR THOSE WHO SUFFERED, THE POW/MIA'S, THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS.
WE NEED MORE TRUE AMERICANS LIKE GEORGE THAT CAN CONTINUE REMINDING PEOPLE HOW GREAT OUR FREEDOMS ARE IN AMERICA. GOD BLESS YOU GEORGE AND YOUR FAMILY.

A few years ago I was visiting my daughter in Manhattan Kansas, went into a Antique Store, there was a display case one of the old one that went around and around, in it was a old POW wrist band, I thought this is no place for that. I bought it and came home and started searching for Bud. Tracking him down in Florida was able to get his phone number gave him a call. We spent quit awhile talking about this and that, told him that he should have it back, that was the tradition if the person was still alive to try to locate and return, if not then you kept it for yours.
I gave him my best and thanked him for serving our country as I did during that time. We said our good byes ...Now Bud I salute you again, will have to find your book and read it ....

High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Rest in peace Col. Day. The light in this world is dimmer without you. May God bless you and your family. We hold you all in our prayers.
