I wrote a letter to Ms. Ferraro many years ago. My mother passed away in 1996 of multiple myeloma and I had shared what I felt was positive input regarding mom's illness with Ms. Ferraro. My mother lived ten years with this disease after (we found out later) she wasn't given six months to a year to live. Sympathy is your pain in our hearts.

I had the privilege to work as an intern for Geraldine Ferraro during my junior year in college. As I was a student at her alma mater, Marymount Manhattan College, she took a special interest in me and provided great guidance. I will always look back at that time with great affection and appreciation for the wonderful role model she provided. Geraldine Ferraro was a mentor to many women and she always conducted herself with great class and grace. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

To the Children and Grandchildren of Geraldine Ferraro:

Thousands of grandchildren and grandparents are grateful to the then Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro for alerting the Congress of the United States to the problem of visitation between grandparents and grandchildren. On December 19, 1982, Congresswoman Ferraro called upon me to testify before the Committee on Aging chaired by Mario Biaggi. With her sponsorship, I became a spokesperson for grandparents with Congressional appearances and many other media exposures. This recognition resulted in an opportunity for grandparents to petition for visitation rights, an opportunity heretofore obstructed. On page 65 of my recently published book*, I expressed my gratitude to Congresswoman Ferraro. This is one of her many achievements, and is the one for which I and grandparents and grandchildren throughout the country will be forever grateful.

With condolences,

Edith Schick Engel

I was not very aware of anything when I first entered MMC in 1979, let alone women's rights. I was told that you were an alumni and was told of all you had done for yourself and women everywhere. I then had the gift of getting to meet you. I am sure you did not remember meeting me, but you made an impression that has lasted a life time. You had New York attitude and a special grace at the same time. These were only two, of the many qualities that helped make you who you were and that helped shaped the role of woman in politics ever since. I would like to thank you for all you have done for me personally and for all women. In addition I would like family for sharing you with us. God Bless Ilene Mutchnick Las Cruces N.M.

Dear Family and Friends of Geraldine Ferraro,

She will forever have a place in my heart. I campaigned for her and Mondale in the 1980's and I was so thrilled to watch such a gracious lady fight the glass ceiling. I'll see her in Heaven. . . no glass ceilings, just streets of gold. I just lost my little sister to blood cancer on Ground Hog Day. The love has never been more alive in my heart for her. Blessings to all of you during this time of grieving.

It was such an honor and pleasure working on her campaign when I was attending Marymount. I will never forget meeting the secret service men and Mrs. Ferraro the day she had a news conference at MMC. Sr Joan Roynane insisted that we have posters, (which I'm glad she did). What an inspiration she was to me, to this day I truly believe that one person can make a difference. I'm continuing her legacy by currently being a 2011 fellow in the Center For Progressive Leadership Program here in Phoenix, AZ Thank you so much Mrs. Ferraro

I am originally from Scranton Pa. and am now currently living in San Jose California. I saw Mrs. Ferraro speak in Scranton during my sophomore year in college. Her speech that day will forever be in my mind BUT the handling of her son's situation at the time was really what I will never forget. I also was involved in the same exact trouble that her son was and my parents took care of me the same exact way she took care of her own son. I will ALWYAYS cherish that day in Scranton that I saw and heard this wonderful woman. GERALDINE FERRARO is a hero to me!

To the family of Ms Ferraro: Do not be sad at a loss; be proud of our gain because of the life of Geraldine Ferraro! She encouraged me to become aware of the importance of one female vote. She gave hope to the ordinary-encouraged the downtrodden-and set an uplifting desire for all American women in my lifetime!

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

My husband passed away 6 weeks ago from complications from multiple myeloma. When in our doctors waiting room I would always tell other patients of this dreaded disease how well Geraldine Ferraro has lived and thrived with this disease. Her death saddens me. She was an icon.

God has mercifully allowed you to join in with him and all your family friends and neighbors who have gone on before you and you will all meet up there and renew all past experiences forever.

It will be most difficult for some to handle, but in time, if they are not too hard on themselves, they will carry on but will never forget you for your gentle ways and generous personality and your friendship, as we know everyone's life that you touched loved you genuinely.

May God bless all your family, and God Bless Geraldine Ferraro.

Remembering her vice presidential announcement..I was on the phone with my grandmother in Brooklyn, and we watched it together over the phone and cried tears of joy to share this moment. I remember operating a sound car announcing her appearance in Boston and what an exciting day that was. I was inspired to commute from Boston to NYC to work for her NY Senate Campaign in 1992 and treasure the moments of interaction with her...as she was such an important part of women's equality in our country. She inspired me to always be involved no matter how frustrating it gets. She taught all of us to transfer a woman's strength and resolve to making our world a better place for everyone.

I sent Geraldine Ferraro an e-mail several years ago after seeing her interviewed on television about Multiple Myeloma. I was inquiring about her treatment because my father also had multiple myeloma. She called me personally and discussed the disease with me, and gave me her phone number so that my father could talk with her. She was quite a caring person. Jacqueline Simpson

You were a spark to start the flame of women's political ascending in higher offices. March 26, 2011
Back in the late 1970's, Geraldine Ferraro was invited to visit our neighborhood in Nonantum - Newton, Massachusetts - which was a working-class Italian neighborhood just like the neighborhood Geraldine grew up in. My mother & a few other grass-roots politically-minded locals invited Geraldine to speak at the local Sons of Italy hall about the cuts the government was intending to make to the social security program. This was a big day for my mother, and she was so impressed with Mrs. Ferraro, she came home & told me all about her, about Geraldine's working-class roots & Italian family & how much she'd achieved through hard work. Geraldine Ferrao was an inspiration to my mother (who later went on to run for local office as an Italian-American woman herself). Thank you Geraldine Ferraro for breaking ground.

March 26, 2011
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.

Thank you Geraldine for your dedicated service to this Great Nation. God rest your soul forever.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

She never received the votes she so deserved. I met her a couple of times. The first meeting was during a very rainy AIDS walk in NYC. Someone was wearing a hooded rainjacket, standing in the rain, with a tray of oranges. The hood was way down on her face so you didn't know it was her unless you got an orange and spoke to her. I thanked her and realized it was Gerrie Ferraro, then I thanked her for more than the oranges. She gave a much needed face to feminism. Thank you Ms. Ferraro for your service to the USA and to women everywhere.
March 26, 2011
Thank you, Geraldine, for leading the charge. We will never forget the paths you forged and the giant steps forward you made for women. Rest easy and know you made a difference.
