Don't know why but got a "Gil" vibe and started looking up and everything Gil. Got the chance to see him a couple of times in Philly but was always a fan. Sometimes "genius" is hard to overcome and, as life will be, we don't always know why. My prayer is that the brother's spirit will be able to rest in peace. Love you Gil. Finding so much truth in your timeless words. God Bless.

Gil Scott Heron was perhaps one of our most prolific wordsmith of our time whose ability to breathe music through words brought to life their meaning and message that resonates with us as authentically as they were written is what makes what he did profound. He was able to take the element of improvisation and integrate it in his very personal and unique expression of infused rhythm, blues, soul and jazz. He was the Coltrane of spoken word to music making his music lyrical and organic. He is missed but his message lives on through what he contributed.
September 07, 2012
God bless you, Gil, may you rest in peace, definitely an icon on this side of life.....

Gil is probably the impetus and one of the most inspirational figures in the black movement of the 70's. He surely was a major cog in how I viewed contemporary society. His light will shine forever in our hearts and minds.

Gil...I first saw and heard you, I was 19....I'm now 57...I'm still here.....you should be too. Who will write the poems then sing the songs with the message where some of us have no need of explaination? Who will tell those who come way after us, what was up back in the day? Who will remind me that my own daddy "loves his little chocolate girl"? Write on...Right on......you're busy up there now....lots to see, lots of folks to meet...if you see my Grandmas Exie or Clementine please tell em' hi...if bump into my Great Granddaddy George, let him know I'm tryin' as hard as I can to keep the family farm intact and that I hope he's proud.... May God comfort your family and loved ones and that their Real Eyes....see and realize... they will all see you again.... I miss knowing you're somewhere here and will someday see you there...I think I'll Call It Sunday....from now on.....

Ahimsa Porter Sumchai, M.D. - I met Gil Scott-Heron as the manager of the outdoor stage at San Francisco's first Black Expo in the late summer of 1970. We dated when he visited the Bay Area from 1870 to 1973. I attended a number of performances with him at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, African Liberation Day and the Great American Music Hall. I hosted a party for he and the band following a performance at San Francisco State University in about 1973. I was eternally transformed by Gil's intelligence, wit and creative genius and was saddened to hear he died prematurely. I am helping to organize a tribute to him that will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at the Bayview Music Festival and Sunday Streets beginning at 11am at Third and Galvez in the Bayview Plaza in San Francisco. Sweet Dreams Gil Scott!

My Tribute to Sensei GSH.
by Sheilah Greene

The Sensei of generations. I was 16 when I first heard, this young man's spoken word. The sound was hard and somewhat cold but his words penetrated my very soul. His voice contained messages from the cries of old, then he put music to the stories he told. My eyes were opened to a different view, as Gil told us things that we never knew. His voice has been silenced, some may say, but I will speak on for it is a brand new day. Talking 'bout the Spirits, can't you hear them, calling your name, calling your name. Rest Sensei, rest.

.

I feel so honored to have witnessed the legacy of this great artist. I was a student at Lincoln University from 1972-1976 when I was first introduced to GSH's music. He returned to our campus during my sophomore year to peform in our student union building and we readily embraced one of our own. That was all she wrote and I have been a faithful follower since. More importantly I made sure my 27, and 24 year old children also know and appreciate his music and it's inherent messaging assuring that this musical legend will live on. RIP Gil.
June 05, 2011
Your music and poetry came into my life as a young teen in the early 70's. It made me think, cherish my memories of what was good, and cry. I lived in NYC and had just lost my mother to cancer. I had to relocate to the south to live with family. The album, 'Winter in America meant the world to me then, and even now. Peace Go with you Brother Gil . You will be missed. Rest in Peace.

I am an artist. While I was pregnant I often listened to Gil's music and would put my headphones on my belly for my baby when I needed both hands to work. My son is here now and he is non-verbal but at every school he has attended the staff has always been impressed at how much he indicates he loves music. I truly believe that it was Gil's music that gave him a love of music. Thank you Gil for his gift. This is just more proof that you brought more joy to people in more ways than you could ever know! I will always love you for being you! May your family and friends have peace in knowing that you were here for a mission that you completed and that there are thousands of people that reaped the benefits of your music and your knowledge. You showed your love for us in every stroke of your pen, every note you played and sang. We love you back! I am sure that there are heavenly concerts and now that the Maestro has arrived they will be even better. RIP

Thanx Gil for charting a course in the minds of a people struggling to understand self and all the things happening against and through them. Real Talk will never fade, for you left a treasure chest of wisdom to comfort us. The mass media will refer to the "Revolution" when mentioning your name. I was born in Newark NJ. My mom who was politically aware and demonstrated duroing the Newark riots brought me up with Uncle Gil's message and music...Real Eyes and Angel Dust were my first impressions as a youth. Oh so talented, Rest in Peace.
May 31, 2011
"The Bottle" and "H2O-Gate Blues" are the first tunes I heard by Gil Scott-Heron. That album was difficult to find in my area of Virginia at that time. It took several years. Meanwhile, I found several others. I do not have a favorite. I like many individual cuts. I am mostly a 45 rpm collector. "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" backed with "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" took me more than 10 years to find.
With all the predjudice against talk/spoken word recordings played on the radio in the 70's [except for "The Americans"], it was amazing I got to hear any GSH. Thank God for college radio. Specifically WHOV -FM @ Hampton Institute. It was then on 88.3. Since an increase in signal and a few other upgrades, @ WHOV now @ 88.1, their R&B portion is not the R&B I grew up on. We now refer to it as Old School.

Well since I just now found out about His unfortunate passing and reminded that GSH is/was almost ten years older than myself, I realize that as he was one of the few I enjoyed close to my age that I have never had the pleasure of seeing perform live in concert. I just have to have my memory of a 1982 appearance on a PBS show hosted by Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.

God Bless Gil Scott-Heron.
May 31, 2011
HE WAS RIGHT THE REVOLUTION WAS NOT TELEVISED BUT ITS GOING ON LIVE IN THE MIDDLE EAST. I HAVE ONLY ONE OF HIS ALBUM AND THAT WAS IT. I HAVE ENJOY HIM SINCE THE 70'S MAY HE REST IN PEACE AND TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS MAY GOD SEE YOU THRU THIS TIME OF SORROW. W HOLLINS BELLEVILLE, IL 62226

Growing up as a young woman in the seventies, I found much candor in his mix of poetry and music. It made me pay attention to the social mores of the day. One of the best concerts I ever attended was Gil Scott-Heron at Chicagofest in the late 1970's. The stage was on a barge facing Navy Pier. It was a warm Chicago summer night. The skyline was in the background and Gil was laying down some soul-filled stuff. Magnificent. Thanks Gil.

May 29, 2011
Although I did not always agree with his message, I learned a lot from listening to Gil back in the day. Gil caused me and many white folks to think much deeper about the state of race relations in this world. I think that the best thing that we could do is work harder at making this country a true example of how people from different backgrounds can work together for the benefit of all. Thanks, Gil, for 'rattling my cage'.
May 29, 2011
Thank God for given us you Bro. Scott-Heron. We growed up with your music and and style of poet.

"No matter how far gone you've gone, you can always turn around. Turn around, turn around, turn around. You may come full circle and be new here again." (from I'm New Here by Gil Scott Heron.)

I offer my heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Gil Scott Heron. I can't begin to imagine the loss you feel. I never met this brother, yet I feel as if I've lost a friend. What a talented man. He had just turned around and was new here again to two generations that weren't born when he first hit it big. His words have, and will continue to live on.

Heavy was a term used to describe deep analytical thinkers and expressionists back in the day. GIL SCOTT-HERON was the heaviest of the heavy. His spirit will live on forever. May his soul rest in peace.

TO THE FAMILY OF GIL; MAY I OFFER MY CONDOLENCES FOR SUCH A GREAT MAN THAT HAS ENLIGHTENED THE COLLEGE STUDENTS OF THE '70' ERA. HE LET US KNOW ABOUT OUR CITIES, COUNTRY AND WORLD. I am sorry to hear Gil Scott-Heron has passed. He was the poet that made us look, not only at our own (USA) cultural issues, but also to acknowledge and even understand global human issues. For this we are grateful. With compelling cadence and style, he became a part of the voice of a generation. And though his work will continue to live, he will be missed.

I would first like to extend my deepest condolences to Gil's family. His name takes me back to memories of listening to his songs. It is so hard to lose a loved one and even more so when it is unexpected. During times like this it may be comforting to look towards God for comfort as 1 Corinthians 1:3, 4 says. I hope that you all will be strengthened during this time of need.
May 28, 2011
Good bye Gil Scott-Heron. You have influenced my life as well as those of my children. Funny, we were just talking about you last night and my son emphaticly said "Heck yes, I'd love to see Gill Scott-Heron". He missed his chance, you will not be televised:(

May 28, 2011
i had the rare pleasure of seeing him in Edinburgh, Sctoalnd last year playing at a sold out show. It was so amazing to finally see him after so many years of hearing his music. Gil Scott-Heron was an original; there won't be any more like him.
May 28, 2011
Like so many, you are one of a kind! Your music and words will be with us forever!
May 28, 2011
I have about a dozen of Gil's songs on my MP3 player, and I use them to teach history. I didn't know that he went to Lincoln University, but I'm not surprised -- a lot of significant people went there. To his family and friends, I have nothing to say that will make you feel better about his passing, but the world is definitely a better place because he lived in it.
May 28, 2011
Peace Go With You Brother...your life will continue in your song...you being on the planet called us into remembering...and just knowing that, I think I'll call your life "...Morning from now on..." Peace and Love, Always!
May 28, 2011
I was introduced to Gil's amazing music/poetry and was blown away. His brutal honesty touched the hearts and minds of many. What a great loss!! Faithful Job once asked, "If an able-bodied man dies, can he live again?" God answers, "You will call and I myself shall answer you. For the work of your hands you will have a yearning." (Job 14:14,15) May Gil's voice be heard again.
May 28, 2011
I remember Gil Scott back in those turbulent days of the 1970s,i.e. the anti-war movement, the cold war and the black consciousness movement. He made an appearance at Central State University in Ohio in the mid 1970s when I was a student there. He truly reflected the spirit and excitement of those days. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends. Rip Gil Scott.
May 28, 2011
My Brother, You kept me real with your music. RIP.
