To the family of Miss Gladys Horton
I would like to express my deepest sympathy to you at the loss of your beloved mother. Gladys. I have been lucky to listen to your mother's recordings and through Marc Taylor's book, feel I have come to understand a little bit of your mother's life journey. I listened to radio interview your mother did in English in the 90's and was amazed at strength of her character. I sincerely hope that you make every effort to see that her manuscript gets published as so many of her fans would cherish reading her thoughts.
May her spirit rest in peace, and that she be aware that her music will be remembered "Forever More."

I sincerely offer my condolence for Gladys Horton. Life is fragile. Like a snowflake it leaves. Her rich, courageous life is a tribute to her character. The sting of death not only pains but numbs survivors. What a blessing it will be when we can rightly ask: “Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?”—1 Corinthians 15:55. She left this world a better place. All who will mourn her will celebrate her life. Jesus said, “Do not let your heart be troubled”. (John 14:27)

“Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the storm.” —Anonymous

You were always a superstar, no matter what ever anyone would say about you or The Marvelettes. You gave Motown their very first million seller record with "PLEASE MR. POSTMAN".
Even before others came after you and the group, to make music history. THE MARVELETTES were the very first, to do so much for female groups and vocalist because you were the model for better things to come along years later on!
My love and respect towards you as an entertainer, always came from my heart where it really counts!
Working as your personal manager, I heard so many good things about you and The Marvelettes that made me so very proud and so honored to be associated with such a great and wonderful person.

Meeting you the first time in Edison, New Jersey, during "The 30 YEARS Of ROCK & ROLL REVUE" tour. Was the greatest thrill for me, because it afforded me the chance and opportunity of meeting you!

May you rest in peace my dear friend, and always know that you were deeply loved as well respected by so many that were always honored to share the stage with Ms. Gladys Horton, Founder of The Marvelettes of Motown Records fame!

I miss miss you so much, but the memories of working with you shall always be priceless to me.

Much love to you Vaughn, you were and still is an incredible son to your mom and I know she felt the same way. My deepest condolences to the entire "Horton Family".
February 14, 2011
Gladys Horton's soulful, raspy voice propelled The Marvelettes' very first release "Please Mr. Postman" to the #1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart in 1961.
Since that hit was Motown's very first #1, and because The Beatles covered it in an early album I feel The Marvelettes are long overdue for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
Rest in peace Gladys. You will be missed.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

To the two sons of Ms. Horton, and other relative and loved ones. I loved all of the Mavelettes songs. As an eight year-old kid I even performed a dance routine off their song "Twistin Postman." I really wish that Motown would establish a fund for these legends who actually put Motown on the map. To this date, I still listen to and enjoy the Marvelettes' music. THEY WERE SO UNDER-RATED, ESPECIALLY MS. HORTON. MAY SHE REST IN PEACE. GOD BLESS YOU!

Gladys Horton was a pioneer in the field of rhythm and blues, rock and roll and soul music. She had a powerful voice that will never be forgotten. Some years ago, I bought the Marvellettes Ultimate Collection and was amazed to discover how many great songs she recorded. Singers in generations to come will judge their talent up to yours. With todays garbage on the radio and television, your music will be appreciated more as time goes on. The Marvelettes ROCKED! Those of us who appreciate good quality singing will be talking about Motown groups forever. Still feel the Love.

A friend in Philadelphia, PA
January 31, 2011
You will be missed, Miss Gladys Horton. Motown Forever.
January 31, 2011
I still like the Marvelettes. Athough I learned too late in life about their music, when I became aware of such in 1972 and on, I treated like new beause it was "new" to me. I now do that to all music 1897 through 1999. Yet most of what passes for music these days leave a lot to be desired.
I do not have a favorite song nor album. I can only list those I prefer over others. One particular is with some of the Temptations doing some backgroud on "My Baby Must Be A Magician".
The Marvelettes latest album, " The Return Of The Marvelette" in 1970 is good. Too bad Motown was not equally promoting all artists. Motown let some good records fail over the years. I know beacause of the fewer ones being produced. Sometimes promoting some way too late. Things in the vault does not always gain value.
I wish more info were published about the Marvelettes beyond just the general and hit information. As young as they were, each teenage group were presented differently. My main interest is of the Motown years of all artists before 1967.
The Marvelettes, as shown on the various albums I have, I interpret began as a quintette, then worked its way to a trio until 1970 when only one member with two back up singers.
And I thought the Lord only worked in mysterious ways!
God Bless Gladys. May your voice be heard whether lead, among, or solo through the ages. You be somebody's "...Remedy..."

To The Horton Family...Gladys is now recording in Heaven!

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

How strange to feel such loss for a woman I've never spoken to yet feel so beholden to -as with all the Motown stars of the 1960s- for so many years of so much happiness that has never dimmed.

From her most far-flung fans to her closest relatives, we are all in mourning, but there is comfort in knowing Gladys is in Paradise, and knows with an accuracy as never before exactly how many hearts she touched in her lifetime here. Gladys sings with the angels now, and Heaven's postman brings only constant, happy news.
January 31, 2011
mr postman was a song that every young lady would love to sing she sung that song so wonderful. we all loved her but we know god loved her best, to the family always remember earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal.
January 30, 2011
Even though there have been many wannabe acts touring in recent years, the sophisticated soul of Gladys and the Marvelettes will not be forgotten. A class act. RIP.

Sad to see such a good person go so young; 66 is too early. I remember a skit on the Carol Burnett Show lampooning the "Big Hair" of groups like hers-it was special. I hope that you, the surviving family members and relatives get through this time in as much peace and solace as possible.

Gladys' work at Motown has stood the test of time and is revered in England, my home country.
I was honoured to see her perform several times when she visited the UK and she never gave of anything but her best, taking audiences along with her as she sang the Marvelettes hits that she graced and led so beautifully.
I send my very best wishes to Gladys' family at this very sad time but rest assured that the long, ever loving arms of Jesus have caught her up and taken her to heaven where she will rest with all of those she has loved so well.

To the family,Thank You for sharing Ms. Horton with the WORLD! Her music has made history and will be sung for all time. At a time in history where separation was the norm, Gladys helped to bring people of different races, cultures and ages together. I watched the video for the song,"Please Mr. Postman". One of the first things that I noticed, was Black and White teenagers sitting next to each other in 1961!! I pray that the flame of this candle reminds you of the light that she burns for her family as she waits in heaven! GOD REST HER SOUL.

The Marvelettes were the first great girl group, a model for the others who came after. Their sound of raw soul with Gladys's vocals gave Motown their first gold record. The Marvelettes sound was unique and pure and raw so full of talent. This is a group that belongs in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Horton. She was such a talented artist and commendable vocalist. Although music is not as movable as it once was, we still have voices like hers to be reminded of how good it was.

To her friends and family draw comfort from the fact that she is no longer suffering or in pain.

Gladys, I will miss you. I love you. You had a dog named Sparky and you sometimes by mistake called me Sparky instead of Spookey; and sometimes you called me Smokey instead of Spookey. I liked being called Smokey but all in all you were one of my great all time singing friends along with Mary Wells. We had some good times and you were truly the first female hitmaker at Motown before any of them.

This song brings back so many memories of school dances, steady sweaters, wearing your sweetheart's class ring and wrapping it with angora so it would fit your finger, homemade graffiti for the homecoming game. This was the quintessential song for people my age. I miss the old Motown and bless the people who made it happen. My condolences to the family of Ms. Horton.

My deepest condolence to her family for such a great loss! I was inspired to become a singer because of Gladys Horton and other female singers who paved the way!!! And, her contribution to the age of great music won't ever be forgotten.

The wind that gave me my first breath also received my last sigh. Your spirit will live on and never die. We will always cherish those moments with you. No time for sorrow or feeling blue. You are with our Lord and he will see us through, these most difficult times. Fly my dear, and take to the sky, spread your wings like a bird way up high. We will always love you.

I loved the Marvelettes. I grew up here in England in the sixties and the Marvelettes were so distinctive, particularly with Gladys on lead. My favourites - Dont mess with Bill, When You're Young and in Love, and My Baby Must be a Majician. They had such personal meaning for me. I would have loved to have seen her perform here in England. So sad to hear Gladys has passed. My condolences to her family.

RIP Gladys, make no mistake about it, your song, "Please Mr. Postman" was by far one of the best Rock and Roll songs of that decade. I will never forget my friend Judy coming back from New York with that 45rpm and saying, you wait, this song is going to be huge.
Only 90 miles away and we hadn't heard it yet..well the rest is history. I loved it from the first time I heard it. It brings back wonderful memories of a much nicer time. You were never replaced. You were the lead-singer that made it a huge hit. I hope you are up there now singing that song to my dear dear late friend and her sister!

The teen years are always difficult because they are akward years, but Motown music was our greatest joy. The Marvelettes were one of the first groups that spoke to my teen angst. The hits were sung by all the teen girls that I knew. Gladys will be especially missed by those who knew her by touring with her. Gladys, Len Barry was upset when we gave him the news. Rest In Peace Gladys, you deserve the applause that awaits you up in the heavenly choir.

As GladysHorton & The Marvelettes personal manager, even for only a short time. It was always a pleasure, to go tour and hear that the millions of fans never forgot her and the music that rocked the music industry.

In my last conversation with Gladys, I was happy to tell her that Motown Records finally settled the situation of back royalities that were held for The Marvelettes. That check amounted to over $56,000.00 for each orginial member of the group.

She was a doll to work with, and a pleasure to call a real friend.

In loving memory of a wonderful voice. I shall always cherish my Motown memories and don't know where I'd be without the artists or my memories. Gladys, a unique voice, will be missed but thank God the music Gladys and her friends made at Motown are timeless and will live on forever. Motown taught me a lot and I am hopelessly indebted and appreciative of their legacy. RIP in Gladys. Thank you for your voice.

R.I.P. Ms. Gladys Horton. My condolences to Ms. Horton's family and friends. God Bless Gladys spirit as it travels home. You will never be forgotten. I remember so clearly, like it was yesterday, the song Mr. Postman verbatim, and it brings back such wonderful memories growing up in New York in the 1960's.
January 27, 2011
The Marvelettes were probably my favorite Motown group and Gladys was my absolute favorite member. To this day, I still regard "Too Many Fish in the Sea" and "Beechwood 4-5789" as amongst the greatest songs ever recorded. And, of course there's "Pleaase Mr. Postman". Her lead voice was the reason why. My dream was to help get them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with all the other Motown artists. How I wanted just to embrace her and say "thank you". I'll truly miss her. To the family, my heart goes out to you.
